I was pleasantly surprised to discover Norris specializes in New Balance running shoes (the only brand they carry). I have a wide foot and they had the perfect high quality running shoe for me. Great customer service and a great selection of running shoes as well as work shoes and work boots. I've found a new favorite shoe store. This review is about accommodation, about kindness, and about trust. It is not about a pair of $50 shoes. I sold shoes, clothing, cars and much more - for dozens of years. And there's an old saying in the retail business: Make someone happy, they'll tell 10 people; make them unhappy, they'll tell a thousand. I am not happy. I went to Norris because they carry the kinds of shoes I need for walking. I have plantar fasciitis and need shoes for support, and Norris was highly recommended for this type of footwear. I appreciate family-owned businesses, and whenever I can, love to patronize these kinds of stores rather than shop on the internet. So I made the drive to Medford from Grants Pass to shop for some new shoes. Linda was my salesperson, and she's also the manager of the store. Cordial, knowledgeable, she helped me as I tried on a number of different styles. I found an awesome pair of Birkenstocks that were SO comfortable - but decided against them as fall and winter are coming and I need closed shoes. I settled on a pair of New Balance shoes. I need the support that this brand offers. They were cute and comfortable, and they were a wide width which is good for me (I have fat feet!). Perfect for the gym and just plain everyday casual use. AND they were on sale! Score! But when I got home, trying them on with different outfits and walking around the house in them, I noticed that the top of the shoe was cramping my big toe a bit on both shoes. They were long enough, but the design of the shoe had the top sloping down just enough to hit the top of my toes. I hadn't noticed this in the store, but hadn't really walked in them for more than a few minutes. Bottom line? I bought them for walking...and they hurt my toe when I walked. So. What to do. I knew when I bought them that they were "sale shoes" and that "all sales were final" - meaning no returns or exchanges. But, because they were brand new and because I was willing to exchange them for the $130 Birkenstocks, I decided to throw myself on the mercy of the good people at Norris Shoes and see if I might be able to "trade up". I called the store to talk to Linda, but she wasn't in. I spoke to a woman named Laura and explained my situation and she was friendly...but just about as unhelpful as can be. She told me to "just come by the store between 9:00 and 9:30 am, because that's when Linda is available". I told her I lived in Grants Pass and would like to speak to Linda before I made the 60 mile round trip. I asked what the best time to call back would be but just couldn't get a definitive answer. So I told her I would call Linda back later in the week. I called a few days later and got Laura again. Again, Linda was not there. So I left her my number and asked her to have Linda return my call. Days went by. No return call. I know people get busy. I know that my silly $50 purchase is probably not a priority in the grand scheme of things. But I *am* a customer. I have called twice, and left my number for a return call. So I called this morning (Monday) at 9:15 am. I got Linda on the phone! Yay! I explained my situation, and that the shoes were cramping my big toes. She went on the defensive right away, telling me, "Well, you walked around the store quite a bit and there just fine when you were here." I agreed that yes, they seemed "just fine" when I was there. But that they were *not* just fine now, after having worn them around the house. I told her that I understood the policy of "no returns of exchanges" but was hoping she'd make an exception, and allow me to exchange my brand new unworn shoes for a much more expensive pair of Birkenstocks. She repeated again that "they were just fine when you were here" and that "you walked around for a long time in the store and there was no problem" (I didn't walk around for "a long time", by the way). I told her plaintively, "Well, they're not fine now. I bought them for walking and can't walk in them. I'd just like to exchange them for a much more expensive pair of shoes." There was a pause. Yes, she was curt, short and borderline rude. Yes, she seemed to be accusing me of trying to pull some kind of fast one. But I was sure my plea for mercy was heard. After a few beats she responded. "You're putting me in an uncomfortable position here. When you wore them in the store they were just fine. There's nothing I can do." I thanked her for her consideration and hung up. I knew before I called that I might not be able to return them. But I didn't expect a rude, accusatory tone. I wasn't trying to pull a fast one, which she seemed to suggest. $50 is not going to change my life, but walking in shoes that are uncomfortable will. Norris Shoes will not go out of business if they allow one customer to exchange a pair of unworn sale shoes. But they will go out of business if customers decide that Amazon.com is more accommodating and far less judgmental than the Lindas of the world. read more

Very rude. Went in looking for shoes and after only trying on a couple sizes they sassily accused me of only looking to buy online. I really value brick and mortar stores and was looking for help in finding a shoe that fits because you can never tell with online orders. Unfortunately, this store has horrible customer service and I would have been better off having never gone in. Expert Service! I stopped by today after work hoping to find a great deal and selection on new balance running shoes. They have a really extensive selection of running shoes and casual/formal shoes. The gentleman that helped me really knew a lot about sizing and fit. It is hard to find this service at just any store. I would definitely recommend this store to anyone looking to find the right fit and comfort shoe with style! I mentioned that I am running in the pear blossom festival and he gave me a discount. Nina and I stop here whenever we're in Ashland. I used to buy shoes here, but since discovering Cyrus and The Next Step all my shoes come from him. When Nina and I were here in August I saw some of my favorite SmartWool socks in pretty, new colors. I won't go into why I didn't buy them then, but after breakfast this morning Alan and I stopped by Norris to buy the socks. Not only did they have the pretty green I wanted, but they had the pretty blue I had wanted from the shoe store in Ashland which they couldn't get in my size. Two of each and I was set. I was really excited to find this wonderful shoe store. So many sales people in shoe stores know very little about atypical foot problems. This store was being run by a man who really understood my particular needs. I really love New Balance shoes and found Norris Shoes as the only New Balance dealer in the area. I saw a pair I liked but they didn't have it on my size. However, the exact same style was available in a different color. Because I wear orthotics he tried pulling out the inserts first before putting my orthotics in. He watched me walk and noticed that due to my very narrow feet the shoes were not supporting my feet ideally. He replaced the original inserts then added my orthotics and the result was amazing. His knowledge of getting the optimum fit made my experience better than expected. I definitely recommend my new favorite shoe store. Never again will I order shoes online. There is nothing to compare to knowledgeable service and trying shoes on with an expert guiding the selection. I love my shoes and my new shoe store that isn't new at all, just new to me. read more

Beware if you are considering purchasing a gift certificate. I was so excited to receive a gift for Christmas to purchase a good pair of work shoes from the great selection that I had seen at Norris Shoes. I went in the store twice and I felt oddly rushed out of the store on my first occasion after telling the salesperson about my excitement of receiving a gift for the store. My second time in the store, I decided that I would stay a little longer and try on a few full-priced shoes on their floor. I provided the salesperson with three different shoes to see if I could try on something. He returned with completely different styles/colors and I requested to try on any shoe in my size remotely close to what I was looking for. He said they didn't have anything. I asked if they could then order, and he wasn't able to provide a straight answer leaving me to believe I would need to pay before they ordered them (thus not allowing me to try them on before buying them). I asked if they would then call me if they got anything in, and he told me that would be too difficult to follow-up on. I asked to speak to the Manager/Owner and he then became very rude and resistant telling me that he found it hard to believe I couldn't find a pair of shoes in the store and suggested that I just purchase tennis shoes. He also suggested that I consider dying a pair of shoes that were a different color than I wanted. He told me that he felt like I was trying on shoes that were too small for me, and never offered to measure my foot throughout the entire experience. He continued to make comments that made me feel like I had an abnormal size foot, but I've never had a difficult time finding a size 10 in the past. I was able to speak to the owners, and the gentlemen was very nice and told me they just wanted to help me find what I wanted but I would need to speak to his wife. She was also unable to provide clear information on whether they would order shoes for me (from their selection of shoes on their floor...no special orders or anything like that) without me paying up front. I ended up selling my certificate to a friend who had a negative experience as well, but only after they were aware she was paying with a gift certificate. I actually feel uncomfortable leaving negative reviews for a small/local business but I've never experienced such poor customer service before and feel like people should be warned. Yesterday afternoon I attempted to pick up two pairs of shoes that I received a call from them that they were ready and waiting for me (i was coming in for a 2 minute payment and receive merchandise transaction). My business is on the outskirts of north Medford. We close at 5 which I strongly believe means the business does not begin to close until closing time and reasonable accomidations for late customers. I arrived at your business at 5:27, stepped out of my truck and was at the door at 5:28. The door was locked and lights were off. I knocked on the door and the only thing I saw was someone's dog inside moving about. I walked back to my truck got inside and started it as a young woman came out of the store with the dog. I looked at the my watch and my truck clock and it was 5:29. I rolled down my window and asked the woman, "I did not know you folks were closing early today?" She snipped, "We didn't". I said, "oh, what time do you close?" She said, "5:30". I said, "well you did close early because it is is not yet 5:30." By then I had put my truck in reverse and thought I am not going argue with this person and I did not hear the last thing she snipped at me as I was driving away. It was odd that someone would argue time with a customer when I have a watch on my wrist that I pointed to during our discussion, a clock in the dash of my truck and my phone displaying the time. For the sake of me not wanting to be silly, after I got home, I checked all time pieces against the internet time and the time on two cell phones (which are automatically updated in atomic time) and all are in sink and accurate with my watch and truck clock. Poor business practice on many levels. Very much a shame because I have been a customer for years and have enjoyed my previous experiences. read more
