I've used the pools at the YMCA buildings in San Francisco. I decided to try this pool in North Beach. It's $8 day pass. I didn't know it was the only public pool with a sauna. The gyms have saunas with pool. The pool was nice. The location is nice in North Beach. The locker room was pretty good. I would be back. Lap swim is ideal. read more

This is such a great place to swim and relax. I've been here 12 times and it's been smooth sailing. The main facilities are clean. I love how they have a swimsuit dryer and plenty of showers. I highly recommend you purchase shower shoes! Don't let your feet touch the ground in the locker rooms. I like the 2 pool concept. It makes it easier for the lap swims to be spread out. I have a monthly pass and I have been swimming usually during the "lap swim" times. I know the "rec swim" can get busy here. Bring shoes!!! Staff are nice. Let's go swimming at the beach! Contrary to popular belief, there is no beach in North Beach... Aquatic Park probably the geographically closest one to this neighborhood. As a child, my family mostly went to Rossi Playground after school/work as part of our family bonding and physical activity program. My parents and sometimes my uncles would take my siblings and me there. I actually mostly waded in the pool as I hated the chlorine in my eyes. After paying the entry fee, we would go to the male and female locker rooms respectively and change, given designated lockers to secure our clothes and belongings. As a child, the pool looked large but I'm sure it is more up to scale since I'm a grown adult now. It was a decent sized pool. To be honest, I looked forward to going to the family pizza place after our swimming session. Just how I'm built. North Beach Swimming is much larger and spacious. It sits just next to the playground, a place where I spent infinitely more time playing softball. I remember when I first came here, the entry fee was $0.10.... yes, as in ten cents; it's $7.00 for adults now.. The pool was more crowded with mostly children who hailed from the neighborhood, North Beach, Chinatown, Nob or Russian Hill. The demographic was mostly Chinese, given the proximity to Chinatown from my childhood visits there. They are currently open under limited hours so do check their posted message board for the schedule. I noticed that the are mostly lap swimming, which makes sense with the social distancing requirements. The remodel is complete for the pool and the playground so I'm sure the neighborhood youth are awaiting things to open up again. read more

I am an ex professional swimmer and have swam in pools all over the world. I'm new to the city and looking for my spot to get some laps in, North Beach pool was just OK. The pool is located in a bustling part of San Francisco- right on Lombard, and you can expect to circle the block for parking. I did expect this ahead of time, and was pleasantly surprised to only circle once & find parking on Chestnut- just 1 block away. $7 is the fee for lap swim, standard at all SF city pools. When I visited in April 2022, they were only accepting cash.  The North Beach Pool has an interesting set up. There are actually 2 separate pools in this facility- one "cold" pool, ranging between 77-78° F, and one "warm" pool, ranging between 86-88° F. The differing temperatures in the two distinct pools strike me as odd. The temperatures aren't as extreme as you might find in a day spa- contrasting a hot tub session with a cold plunge. It was a small facility, and I would anticipate that 4 lanes total, 2 for serious lap swimmers, would get crowded at times. However, when I visited, there were max 3 people in the cold pool, which was manageable.  The locker rooms are shabby and could use some updating- but the basics are there. There is a communal shower space, lockers for day use, and curtained changed areas, and a swim suit dryer. Although it is definitely dated, it didn't feel particularly dirty or inadequate.   The North Beach pool space is definitely a bare-bones facility, but the warm pool and the sauna make this a good spot for anyone seeking warm water therapy or just a nice recovery swim session. read more

I appreciate that they have a sauna, but given that the young woman who admitted me to the pool also told me to keep my belongings with me as there have been reported locker break-ins in the changing rooms, I can't for the life of me figure out how to use it. I mean, I'm not going to schlepp my clothing bag & various other personal items in there with me, am I? The two pools on site would be grand if they were fused into one. As it stands, there are two, narrow pools for use. The 'cool' pool accommodates only two (wide-ish) lap lanes. The 'warm' pool is further reduced ( 89′ x 21′ cut in half) as it's bisected in order to separate children and their parents from a few adults at the 7' deep end. It felt as if I were in a small, backyard pool, to be honest. The one good thing I thought would be as a result of this truncated swim area was that there wouldn't be any lap swimmers to contend with. Au contraire! Those fools are trying it in the small pool area as well! Short swims are to be had, but you're at the other side of the pool in a flash, so it may not feel satisfying to the visitor. However, if you're keen to just hold onto the side of the pool and kick your legs for a spell or want to use water weights in place, then this might be the pool for you. Then, again, maybe not. *Lockers, toilets and showers are fine. If you've been to Coffman, then these change rooms might feel somewhat familiar. Although Coffman's set-up is a bit more humane & simply a bit nicer. *Visitors/viewers are parked in the reception area, so the space can feel fairly cramped when entering the facility. *Street parking is extremely difficult. *Transit: 30 Stockton bus read more

so disappointed that they only have 1.5 hours of lap swimming available for people who work full time and need to blow some steam off in a cold pool. they used to have a minimum of 3 evening lap swims, but easily reduced that to 1 day a week (actually 1.5 hours a week) AND you have to share it with 15 loud (remember this place echoes) families. no more awesome peace of mind swim after work. they literally have so many bodies in the water, that the cold pool is now a warm pool for serious swimmers (now as mediocre temperature-d as any other public pool). (aka they took away the benefits of a cold plunge- it's regenerative powers) i really miss this place. i can't believe it's still here, but inaccessible to the public (and no i'm not sharing my peace with 30 screaming kids because you decided to jam us all into a COVID heavy breathing room - they don't ventilate the place well to cater to non-swimmers complaining about being cold) how can a place be open only during working hours and closed to tax-paying adults when they're off work? i seriously miss swimming here. this place used to be my go-to sore muscles regeneration place. didn't know I could mourn this much over the loss of a cold pool where you could lie on your back and see the night sky through the skylight before. Beautifully maintained with an immaculate pool and locker rooms, this great pool is easily accessible to the Financial District and of course, North Beach. I chose this Parks & Rec pool because the time for weekly swim lessons jibed nicely with my little boy's school schedule, despite the across town jog that a half hour barely allows. I expected parking to be extremely "challenging" but it's usually a simple spin around the block to find a free street parking or a meter, at least at this shoulder time of 4pm. (Even with the Central Subway dig going on right behind the building, I know, you'd think it'd be impossible). Instructors are dedicated and the manager wants to see kids build confidence and learn how to swim. Everyone is very respectful to the children and they give extra attention and help to kids who need more one-on-one instruction. I've heard the pool is one of the warmer ones in the Parks & Rec network: it's kept at a balmy 86 degrees so if you're looking for a bracing/refreshing dip, this may not be your spot. Parents aren't allowed into the pool room (and you must remove outside shoes if you want to enter for a moment) but you can watch the class through the glass wall but there are only a few places to sit or even stand. Between the number of parents and the tropical temperature inside the building, many parents spill out onto the sidewalk to wait. All and all, it's another well-run Parks & Rec pool with the added benefit of its proximity to awesome North Beach restaurants, the North Beach public library (need to return a library book, it's a half block away) and Trader Joe's just up the street. read more

Beautiful Pool, newly renovated, Dry Sauna, and helpful aquatic staff. This public pool actually has two pools. A warm pool that is set at 85 degrees for recreation swim, lessons, and water excercise and a cooler pool set at 76 degrees for lap swim only. One thing to remember is to check the schedule before coming because the pool has different activities going on in each pool and the staff is strict about what goes on in each pool during those activities. The price of admission is $4 for adults and $1 for children. Bring exact change!!! They do not give change!!! If you take swim lessons or the water excersice class there then all you do is add $1 to your entrance fee. I swim laps at the North Beach Pool a few times a week. The lap pool is 82 feet (25 meters) long and ranges from 3.5 to 10 feet in depth. The water is a very cool 77 degrees, which is perfect for swimming laps but might seem cold if you're used to other pools in the city. There are only two lanes (fast/slow) but they're extra wide (11 feet) to make it easy to circle swim and to pass other swimmers. There's also a warm pool (85 degrees) for lessons and rec swim. Compared to the cold pool, the warm pool feels like taking a hot bath. It's way too warm for me, but many people (especially older people and children) seem to like it. The hours are very strange and unpredictable, so check on http://sfrecpark.org for the latest schedule. The schedule changes every couple months. Perhaps the best part of the pool is the sauna. It's usually set to 195 degrees and is great for relaxing post swim. Besides the wonky hours, the only downside is the bathroom and showers are sometimes used by homeless people. Very nice pools. Life guards work very hard to keep eye on children. They also increase a life guard as the lap pool opens for children. Clean lap pool and a kid likes a warm pool (too warm for me though). No private showers, no soaps. Life guards also keep eye on people whom try to enter a pool w/o shower. Sauna: Adults only. My regular pool is Y at Embarcadero, but I also enjoy this pool. Clean facility, close to a bus stop. Easy access Cafes at North Beach and Shopping experience in China town. read more

Clean, not crowed, and nice location. warm pool is pretty good, but the cold one is a little cold for me, I probably gonna do warm pool all the time~ they also provide lessons for different lever, around 60$, the regular adult lab ticket is 6$ per time. Scrip ticket is 52$ for 10 swims. There are something you need to know before you come. First, bring exact change (cash only). Second, bring a lock. Last, slipper and bath towel. I haven't been to any swimming pools in SF. By community pool expectations in a city, though, this place was a pleasant surprise. It is small and the lanes can crowd up in the cold pool, but people are polite. The chlorine isn't too strong. They let you borrow goggles if you left yours at home. For $5, doesn't get much cheaper. It also felt as clean as community pools get. At one point, I did think to myself, I'm swimming in the water with everyone's genitals. It's probably best that I don't watch Contagion. read more

I've been coming to this pool since '94 and I love what they did with the renovations. However, I stopped coming after an incident with a staff I had about 6 years ago. I was sitting in the sauna just enjoying myself after a swim when a high school boy (a volunteer, probably) told me and my boyfriend we had to get out. We were confused because there was another gentleman in the sauna with us, but he targeted just my bf and me. We asked him why? He said because the sauna is for 18+ only. We were 22, so we didn't know what the issue was. Maybe that's his way of complimenting me for my youthful genetics? The teen then insisted we were under 18 because he saw us paying kids price to enter the pool, which was FALSE. We paid adult price. We told him to **** off and reported this unacceptable behavior to the manager. The world is smaller than it is, because that teen who accused us happened to be my bf's younger brother's classmate's younger brother. Somehow the sister of that teen got ahold of my IM and messaged me to personally apologize for his younger brother's behavior. I let bygones be bygones, but that was the last time I went to North Beach Pool. I'm all for hiring young people so that they'd get some work experience, but please make sure they are properly trained to not be an a-hole. read more

First, let me just say.. I haven't gone swimming since I was on the SF Swim Team in middle school.. I haven't done laps since then either, and back in those days I did 13 continuous laps. I mean I got tired and slowed down, but they were continuous at least. And how do you forget how to do flip-turns? Argh.. FML! I gotta go practice by swimming up to the wall and trying again.. Nowadays, I don't work out anymore. I felt like I needed to do something, and decided it would be swimming. North Beach Pool is super close to my work. Well, no. More like I want to DIE. I got there before the doors opened for lap swim, so I waited outside. Slowly a small group formed and we were let in. The facility is very clean. They've got changing stalls if you haven't got the towel coverage "slip-on-bra-undies-without-exposure" skillz, and lots of lockers. Bring your own lock of course. There were a lot less people than I would imagine, but it's perfect for lap swimming at your own pace. I immediately went into the slow lane, and decided to stay there. I knew that I didn't want to force myself too much, since it had been a while.There are two big pools, and no one bothered me about resting at the ends when I got tired. They had kickboards, weights, and various other things to use. Also the sauna is a great touch. I sat in there for a few minutes before hitting the showers. The people who come here to swim are super nice too. I'm going to keep coming back, though it may take me a while to recuperate. It's $4.00 per swim or $3.60 if you buy the 10pak of tickets online. Not too cheap, but definitely a great pool. But now I'm paying for it in more ways than one.. and dreading tomorrow.. X_____X But wait a second... This is my favorite swimming spot in the city compared to all the other public ones. its probably due to this 1. great layout, one warm pool, one cold pool + sauna 18+ 2. it is airy with big windows and invitingly clean 3. only 5 bucks a swim if you are 18+ other wise i think $2 with school id 4. location location location. its next to a library and smack dab in the middle of the North Beach where all the fine Italian food is at. and in a walkable distance of both Fishermans Wharf and Chinatown. The only down side would be the schedule because this is a recreational pool there are activities that go on like water aerobics, swimming lessons etc. The floors of the changing room also get a little iffy so remember to bring flip flops and all your other swimming essentials + a lock. read more

I grew up a swimmer. Not a casual, summer fun swimmer, but the hardcore, twice-a-day-plus-weekends-and-swimmeets type. In terms of pools, I've seen everything from the gorgeous Olympic-style facilities to the absolute shit holes where you question whether it's safe to get in. And as I've gotten older (and am no longer spending 20+ hours in the water), I've become pickier in my pool choices. So...with this in mind, I give you the NB public pool review: Pros: - Reasonably priced at $5 per swim. Much cheaper than going to the Golden Gate Tennis Club, ClubOne or the Y on a day pass. - Both pools are very clean and heavily chlorinated. The decks and locker rooms are clearly hosed down regularly. They also have a swimsuit dryer, which is an awesome perk. - The cold pool is actually cold, which is great for laps. There is nothing worse than trying to work out in bathtub-temperatures. - There is a separate (warmer) pool for folks who want to play and for swim lessons...which is great because the two groups don't have to duel for space. - The lifeguards are really nice. I ripped my cap one morning and one of the girls let me borrow her spare one. Cons: - The 2-lane division is a waste of space. I read another review here that said they are narrow? The way the stripes on the bottom line up, there should be three lanes. - The weekday evening time ends a little early for most working people, so plan to go for the 6am or Saturday time slots. It is closed on Sundays (boo to budget cuts). - Crowds vary depending on what time you go. The early morning swims tend to be less crowded and have more serious swimmers, while the Saturday afternoon session tends to be the more crowded and more casual. Nothing wrong with this, but plan accordingly. Bottom line: A well-maintained, reasonably priced pool to catch a workout in North Beach. read more

This is one of my favorite pools in the city; I love to swim anywhere and i think I have hit up almost every pool in the city; the only 2 that come to mind that are better than this one are the sports club la (saltwater heated pool) with great natural light and the other one is CLub One at Yerba Buena because the pool is outdoors and it is an inviting location. Disclaimer: I've been spoiled by Southern California pools and I also have high standards for pools. The North Beach pool is a great facility that may suffer from some sub-par management. I came here for lap swim expecting an experience similar to the Hamilton pool but I was left disappointed. Pros: -Clean locker rooms, pool deck was generally clean -Lots of equipment to use -Decent temperature -Close to bus lines -Hair dryers! Cons: -Strange lap swim setup... three lanes get split into two when there are more than 4 people swimming, which creates wider lanes "so that it's easier to pass." As a result you end up confused about where to swim and turn. This setup caused me to leave a little earlier than I was planning because I just got fed up with focusing more on traffic than my swim. -Super shallow (3.5 ft) shallow end is actually a little dangerous if you're into flip turns. I'm really short but I stubbed my toe on the bottom when I missed the wall. ouch. Definitely something to consider for the taller folks. -Condescending signs in the locker room include 3 minute shower limit & 10 second bathing suit spin limit (really?) -No private showers read more

I wanted to try something different for cross-training and decided that the occasional swim would do the trick. The problem was that the pools at my gym (24 Hour Fitness) were getting such negative reviews that I was afraid to go. I read the great reviews about this place and decided to try it last night for the 5:30-7 lap swim. The cost is $5 (exact change) and the locker rooms are right behind you after you pay and then lead out to the two pools. The closer pool is the "cold" pool, but it's actually a great temperature for swimming. The "warm" pool was being used for lessons, but it's available for laps at other times. (Make sure to go online and check the schedule because they have specific times for different activities in the pools.) The lockers are medium sized (not the super long ones you see at some gyms, but not the cubbyhole type either). I'm fine with changing out in the open, but if you're more modest, there are three stalls with curtains for you. They also have a communal shower area with several shower heads, a swimsuit "spinner" to dry your suit (near the sinks), and a few hand dryers that are warm and strong and can dry your hair a little. The pool area itself has high ceilings and lots of windows. The pool was divided into Slow and Fast. I'm new to "lap" etiquette, but I caught on that you swim in a counterclockwise direction up one lane and down the other. Most of the people in my lanes were taking breaks every couple of laps and were nice about asking if you were waiting to go before they started swimming. Since I was swimming laps I didn't get a chance to use the floaters or the weights, but I did use a pair of goggles when I discovered that mine were broken. (I found them behind the lifeguard up on a box and there were some children's ones hanging on a fixture next to the lifeguard.) The location is great. If you get there early and need to while away some time, you can go to the library or swing by one of the cafes. 901 Columbus is really convenient because it's right at Columbus at Lombard, so I stopped in there for some tea before my workout. read more

I've been to this pool for about 2-3 years and it's my second favorite pool in the city (Hamilton Pool being my first). I've taken swimming lessons here and I've recently started swimming laps here.They have two pools; a cold and a warm. The temperatures are alright. The cold pool feels really cold at first but you'll get the hang of it. They have many swimming equipments; which I mostly use the floating boards. For lap swimmers, this place is for you. There is a fast & slow lane so everyone's a happy bird. Other swimmers are pretty respectful and kind; well it varies of course. The staff are kind as well. They also have a sauna but I never been in there because I'm underage. What I don't like it is that on sunny days, it really shines down at the pool from the roof and it literally blinds you. Also the strange thing is that the pool gets really deep; I seem to loose breath when I reach the deeper area.. but I guess that's just my problem. The locker rooms... I'm not a big fan of it. I don't like how the showers are so "public." I always see naked people showering which can be really disturbing. This pool compared to Hamilton's pool, it is very chlorine-y. From what I learned, Hamilton changed the water so it's less choline-y. Other than these... I can't think of anything else. I've been to a few SF city pools and this is the best one by far. There are two pools here, one for recreational swimming and the other for lap swim. The pools are kept at 87 and 77 degrees, respectively. Most pools are kept at 82, so the 87 feels great! I really wish they would heat the lap swim pool to 80...it would make it bearable to swim in. Have to say that this pool actually deserves 4 stars since there is definitely room for improvement. It sucks that they only accept exact change (although if you are a regular, they try to help) and they don't give the discounted tickets over the counter and you need to mail a form. Yes, a physical mail, in frigging 2016 at a city surrounded by tech companies. However, the music they are playing is so good that I can't give anything but 5 stars. I am not a very experience swimmer, but this pool more than covered my needs. They have lots of extra water equipment like kick boards, pull-buoys an goggles. The lifeguards are friendly, and most of the swimmers are courteous. For lane swimming it is rarely over crowded. Many times I have found myself with a lane all to myself, especially around the weekends. This pool is LIGHTYEARS ahead of the 24 hour fitness pools that I have gone to. I have a pass to 24 hour, but would rather ride my bike a mile and pay $4 dollars a swim at North Beach than go to a 24 hour pool. It looks a bit tight from the outside, but it's actually quite spacious on the inside. There are two pools, one cold and one warm. The cold one is 77F, which is a few degrees colder than "perfect" temperature, but after a lap or two, it's actually very comfortable. I also like that its length is a standard 25m instead of 25 yards, so it's a tad longer. The warm pool is really warm, so it's good for a relaxation soak after the workout. I would have given the pool a 5 star review, but I didn't like their locker room/shower facility. There are no private showers, and there are no shelves to put your toiletry items. I also made a mistake of not wearing my flip flops around so walking on the floor felt a bit gross (and I'm not even that anal about cleanliness). There is at least a "hair dryer" which is a hand dryer that's higher, so that's always nice. In comparison, I like Hamilton pool better, but I'm think this is a pretty good public pool if you swim a lot. The location is also more convenient for me. I finally went to the pool for the afternoon session. First, the pools are very nice. I used the cool pool and it felt great once i had done about 4-5 laps. There isnt too much chlorine or at least i couldnt really taste it, so thats a huge plus. They also have plenty of water workout items, floaties, kick boards etc. for anyone to use. Lastly, they are sticklers about the start time so don't get there too early, there is no point they wont let you in. But just as a heads up, the link at the top does not work. First I want to give a shout out to the two lifeguards that are on duty when I come in, Sasha and Roland! They are both awesome and Roland plays the best oldies playlist, it really creates an awesome atmosphere for my morning swims. I've been coming to this pool over the past few months and have thoroughly enjoyed my experience. At first I was hesitant at the thought of a public swimming pool located in the heart of North Beach, but my expectations were exceeded. It is a clean facility with a locker room so you can store your valuables while you swim. Remember to bring your own lock! Here's how what is an actually great city pool gets a 2-star review from me: -1 Website hours don't match up with actual hours. Came here on a Wednesday at 2 which was supposed to be the tail end of "unstructured Adult recreation swim" and found the door was locked. Waited half an hour for lap swim. -1 One hour-ish lap swim windows. Which are fairly inconsistent. Every day a different closing time, different lap swim times. It's a pain having to keep track of, and I feel like my sets are rushed. I guess this is to deter campers, but it's annoying. -1 They don't sell the 10-pack lap swim "scrip books" but they accept them. Well...why doncha sell them? Is that asking too much? Also: $6, cash only, exact change only. That said, it's really a great pool. You can see the TA pyramid and the St. Pete and Paul Cathedral outside the window. Clean locker rooms, lots of lockers, friendly lifeguards, cold and warm pools and sauna. If you come at the right time, with the right money, and do what you do quick. read more

The only thing I like about this place is the neighborhood and the sauna. There are two pools: 1 Cold Pool for laps and 1 Warm pool for water fitness. The pools are relatively small. They divide a three lane pool in half and make one side Fast and the other side Slow. The lanes are sooooooooooooooooooooo narrow that you literally slap peoples feet and hands as they swim past you. There is alot of turbulence in the water cause everyone is trying to pass eachother up. The build of the pool is much like Sava Pool (best pool in City) but on a smaller scale. Theres just way too many folks for such as small and NARROW pool. The locker rooms can get crowded as it is fairly small too. I do like that they have a SAUNA!!!!!!!!!! The neighborhood is beautiful, but PARKING IS HARD TO FIND...... I just had to come here just to check it out. I figure that Id swim here since I ran in the Marina and this seems to be the closest pool. Anyway, it is an interesting set-up but it wouldnt be my first choice to swim at. read more

I like this pool. It is not the best but it is good enough for a causal swim when you are tired from working on a computer all day. It has a (hair) dryer, and if you want to use the locker, you need to bring you own padlock. For $5 it cannot go wrong much. read more

Worst experience of all swimming pools over The whole United States of America. Lifesaver was really sheep towards another customer who thought that there is something inappropriate to take a shower naked and the customer took his right to claim about it. Obviously it will harm somehow the child if he sees penis of a grown up man. Straight spined lifesaver would have counterargumented to that customer properly. In shower area I got personally requested to leave the premises because of this extreme nudity. Good place to go if you are not willing to wash properly your groin and penis and like to wear swimsuit in shower. Sauna is not real. There is no water to be thrown on the stove so there is not really use for a relatively warm not-humid room. A lot of dust on the lockers. One star comes from that the showers work technically somehow and the water is warm. read more

One of my favorite pool in the city! Grew up swimming here for swim practice in high school. Friendly life guards, spacious sauna, relatively clean locker rooms. They do have interesting lap pool times due to multiple lessons, and the nearby highschool's swim team. During the summer they have lessons for children and adults. The pool itself has 3 lap swim lanes for varying speeds of swimmers. The pool is kind of cold, but during hot days or tough workouts the temperature seems just right. read more

Great place to take my little one swimming, all the life guards are amazing and so nice. They have toys for the kids to swim with during kids hours. Especially love it when they play reggae on the weekends, my two year loves the music and has a ball! One of our favorite activities to do in the city! read more

I wanted to find a pool that I could swim laps at after work and on weekends..that didn't feel like I was swimming in spit. And I'm soo glad to say that North Beach pool is great! The water is the perfect temp. (cold enough to stay cool in through a workout, but warm enough so that it's easy to slip in). There is only a slow lane and a fast lane..so it was kind of tough for me at first to find out what I was since my speed is medium. So after swimming behind a guy that was doing the breastroke at turtle speed, I went over to the fast lane and was absolutely fine since people were really courteous about passing you/being passed. They have kickboards, pull things, and other equipment that you're free to use. The only issue I have with this pool is that the hours aren't too convenient for me since I don't get off of work until about 5:30 and the latest the pool stays open to do laps is 7 on Tue/Thurs...but it's doable. You can pay $36 for 10 passes (non refundable) or $4 each time you go. If you order the 10 passes online, you'll get your tickets pretty quick (I got mine 2 days later in the mail). read more
