The beach is long and clean with views of the casinos of Atlantic City and the Ocean City-Longport bridge. It is part of the Malibu Beach Wildlife Management area, so very pretty and preserved. You have to carry out your trash, and "hold-it-in" until you get to another place with a bathroom, and parking is limited. But, it's a special place to romp around and be carefree. Be sure to bring baggies and fresh water and bowl.

Twice we had a weekend at the same rental near the southern tip of the island. In the offseason beach rentals are much more reasonably priced & available for a weekend only if one chooses, The spot was great. The ocean was beautiful viewed through the sliding glass back doors. Walk straight out from the house to the sand dunes and the ocean. There were only houses in the area where we stayed. One had to drive up to Beach Haven for restaurants and shopping. The beach itself was the same gorgeous Atlantic Ocean that we are blessed to have in Virginia Beach, although the beach and dunes were wider. The houses were all new, possibly because of Superstorm Sandy that had once devastated the Jersey Shore. It really isn't a bad drive from Coastal Virginia, living as close as I do to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. My normal route up Highway 13 to Brooklyn only has one difference. Instead of taking the Jersey Turnpike, I exit on I-295 and continue to the Cherry Hill, NJ exit. Then I take the narrow backroads across New Jersey, which includes a huge, dark state park. This route leads to the southernmost bridge to Long Beach Island. I think the town you reach is called Surf City. It's an old style beach town with new construction interspersed because of Sandy. I'm always running late & wasn't enticed by their touristy attractions and businesses. To get to our rental head south on Long Beach Boulevard, past the commercialized portion of Beach Haven, until you're near where the road ends and the barrier island narrows. Always seeming to leave late I usually traveled the trip across New Jersey at night. Once it was snowing, making for a stressful drive alone with low visibility on the narrow, dark roads. Much to my surprise I was the first to reach the house. But even more of a surprise was that the door lock was frozen and I couldn't get it open. Passing through Beach Haven I remembered seeing a large restaurant & tavern. That seemed the perfect spot to eat & wait for my son & grandson to arrive. Spending the weekend on Long Beach Island with the beach covered in snow was a beautiful & exhilarating experience. For those of you who vacation south of our beautiful beach town, try a beach town to the north for a completely different experience. I love Long Beach Island on the Jersey Shore and look forward to another return visit.

Cape May County Park North (aka Cameron Wildlife Sanctuary) is apparently a hot secret, because…read moreonly one other car was in the parking lot when I was there on a weekday in the summer. This is a BEAUTIFUL park / wildlife refuge. Trails wind everywhere through the woods, to hammock clearings, scenic spots with benches to sit, a few ponds stocked with ripe lilly pads, picnic areas, a park office, etc. This park is extremely well maintained, with no litter anywhere. Yes, DOGS ARE ALLOWED here. Despite contrary info I got from calling the parks office, there are signs stating the rules for dogs to visit the property, dog waste stations with bags, etc. Well behaved, leashed dogs, are permitted. This is a wildlife sanctuary, so it is lucky they have recently chosen to allow this. It's less than a 10 minute walk to the first pond, and that alone is worth the trip. There are little islands in the pond, with benches on them. Really enchanting. The history of this property is that in the late 19th C, sand was mined here to make cement for Ocean City, as well as to make South Jersey Glass. The Great Depression ended production here, and the landowners filled the sand quarries with water, and stocked them for their own leisure fishing. The property was willed to the county in 1988 to be made into a park. In the summer, you MUST wear bug repellent. Even with repellent, I was covered with mosquitoes if I stopped walking for a few seconds. So just beware and be prepared. While picnicking would be serene here, it is probably best to do it in the months when mosquitoes aren't around. Also, gate locks at 4pm sharp!

There is a…read morenon-paved central trail cutting through the loop that has features an observation deck/bridge close to its mid point. At the southwest terminus of this trail is another nice observation deck with some seating overlooking a branch of the Great Egg Harbor River. Nice off road multiple use trails. Challenging but manageable mountain bike loop trail. Boardwalk pedestrian woods trail. Bike rentals. Playgrounds and pavilions with tables and barbecues. Good parking and good restroom facilities. Patrolled by County park rangers and there is a nature center. What else could you want? One of my favorite parks overall in the area. Must check it out if you have the time.
