Half Reuben with cup of beer cheese soup
    Stephanie J.

We weren't expecting a brunch at a little after noon on a Sunday. We had looked at the apps on the menu prior to arriving so we were a bit disappointed. We inquired if brunch was the only menu and she said yes. Just ordered cokes and our meals. And waited ... and waited ... and waited. Kitchen was so SO slow. Our server came to refill our beverages once while waiting. It was not busy by any stretch of the imagination. The food was very good. I had the grilled cheese and was pleased with the level of spice and the fact it was shredded chicken and not a breast. The soup was as expected. My hubby found the beer cheese soup flour-y but my daughter and I thought it was good. Reuben was excellent according to my daughter. The temperature in the dining room was rather chilly for a day that was only in the high sixties outside. I would go back to try the apps and hope the service is better.

We've been spending our summers in Manistee since the '90s. North Channel has been a great addition. The food is delicious and fresh, and the drinks are refreshing.

I'm in Michigan and stopping in for brewery visit #262. I've never been to Manistee before and enjoyed the little downtown area. North Channel Brewing is a very well-appointed spot. Nice decor, lots of tables and plenty of bar space. I bypassed the "Please wait to be seated" sign and grabbed a bar seat. For a flight of four I chose the Mexican lager, Oktoberfest, the Sawmill stout, and the farmhouse cider. I don't usually go with a cider but I saw some really good comments about it on Yelp so I decided to step outside my comfort zone a little. The Mexican lager was good with a hint of a corn flavor to it. The Oktoberfest was a good example of a festbier. SWPFTD would enjoy this one for sure. The Sawmill stout was quite good. Not overpowering but very flavorful with toasty chocolate flavors throughout. Last up was the farmhouse cider. Yeah, I didn't really enjoy the cider. Don't let that deter you as I'm really not a cider fan but ordered it just after seeing some rave reviews. I've only had one cider I REALLY loved, which was a huckleberry cider at Edge Brewing in Boise. This one was certainly not bad just not quite my cup of...cider. Since I hadn't eaten all day except a snack on the plane, I ordered up some blackened walleye tacos. Let me tell you, those puppies were really good! NCB was a good stop. Great atmosphere, and really good beer and good. If anyone is a glutton for punishment, please, follow my brewery, and distillery, reviews from across the U.S. and beyond! https://www.yelp.com/collection/-8iscFkpiiCI563-FDfwGg and if anyone is wondering who SWPFTD is you will have to check out my review of Black Market Brewing Co in Temecula, CA to understand. Yes, you will need to read into it a little to get the joke but I have confidence in you! I hope my confidence is not misplaced

Food options and the quality has improved greatly over the past few years. They brew a wide selection of beers with numerous styles, ABV and IBU. Service during winter of 2022 has been stellar- they actually do better with fewer staff than when they had lots of younger less capable waitstaff. Full liquor license so you have wine / cocktail choices if you're not a beer-drinker. They sell quite a bit of merchandise as well as their own brews for takeout. Large city parking lot across the street with (slow) EV chargers so there's never a problem with that. Too bad there's little else on Washington Street north of River Street to explore but hopefully that changes over time. This is now quite a viable option for a good time, good food, and drinks near downtown Manistee. Trivia night on Monday night is new and hopefully becomes a local tradition.

Now under new ownership, North Channel is a downgrade from its predecessor. Poorly prepared food, average service.

Much like the small, quaint little places of yesteryear. Typical diner decorations, typical diner servers, and typical diner patrons. This was textbook. It was super busy when I got there, but by the time I left there was probably a 10-15 minute wait at the door. But you know these breakfast places keep takin' 'em in and puttin' 'em out. Since I absolutely despise anything where all my breakfast foods are mushed together (pizzas, burritos, omelets, scrambles, hitches, macros, and fizzles), I opted for the more traditional route of "food on a plate, maybe touching a little bit." It's kind of like the difference between kissing cousins and married cousins. This episode of breakfast will be brought to you by: chicken fried steak, scrambled eggs, American potatoes, bacon, and toast. Special guest, chocolate milk. I'm a little trollop for chicken fried steak. Or really anything fried with a layer of gravy. This one wasn't bad. Had decent flavor, gravy portioning was good. I would welcome it back like a close friend. The eggs were good as well. Since my body can only consume scrambled eggs, anytime they aren't runny or have that weird cooked-too-long skin on them is a win in my book. I would embrace them again like a long lost relative. The American potatoes (or how I always have to ask for them because I can never remember the name "those little potatoes that are chunks"), were good with the ketchup. Cooked the way they were supposed to be. I would sit next to them again on a bus. The bacon. Oh, the bacon. If you're a breakfast place and serve bacon, this will make you or break you in my eyes. The hardest thing I have ever found so far are restaurants that claim to know how to do floppy bacon. Limp bacon. Soggy bacon. Whatever you want to call it. They always claim they know how, then they bring out bacon I could harpoon a fish with. I want bacon I can tie together like shoelaces. Sadly, this bacon missed the mark. I would turn this bacon away at the door. Ultimately, it was a breakfast place. It did what it set out to do. Chocolate milk 10/10 Made up breakfast foods 3/3 Flaccid bacon 5/10

I had barely set foot in the door when the two bartenders at the bar greeted me warmly and welcomed me in and told me I could sit anywhere I wanted. I sat at the bar and as recommended by a local, I ordered the pepper jack crab soup, which was delicious. One thing to be aware of: don't expect real crab in the soup. Imitation only. But it's plentiful and delicious on a frigid winter day. The bartender recommended the roasted chicken or the perch, and living near another great lake and always having ready access to perch, I decided on the broasted chicken. I was not disappointed. It came with four pieces, choice, potato, and a choice of another side. It was way too its food, but I ate more than I thought they would because it was that good. Hilarious and handsome to boot. Or at least the hilarious part. Hokay. So. As much as I'm a huss for bar food, I'm even hussier for wings. So, naturally I ordered the wings. Bone in, as god intended. Buffalo sauce, as Darwin intended. They came perfectly saucy, perfectly temperatured, and perfectly in a little bowl kind of thing. They were meaty and juicy. Loved the flavor. I would eat my body weight in them, and my body weight is not small numbers. I kept the main course simple. Half pound burger, deluxe (lettuce, mayo, tomato, onion). Added mustard. Ketchup's on the table. Then as my side I got the sidewinder fries which are kind of like spiral potato wedges. The burger was pretty decent. The size was good, but the flavor was a little underwhelming. I'm pretty sure the patty was one of those pre-made deals that come in packages. I could be wrong, but that's just what it looked like. Regardless, if I had ordered a burger that was more of a specialty, there might have been more flavor involved. The fries though were pretty good. They're thiccc. Thick fries save lives. Instead of dressing, it came with tubs of sour cream and salsa to mix in. I do that at home sometimes, so can't complain. The lettuce was fresh and crispy. Decent beer selection, including a quite a few bottled ones, which I hadn't noticed until after I ordered my pint of Two Hearted. Be sure to ask for a bottle menu. But also, if you don't eat you might die? This was one of those moments. It was nigh on dinner time and I wasn't sure of my next move. Nothing in particular sounded good. When that's the case, you can always settle for Mexican. Who doesn't like tacos and taco related foods? I saw this was a fairly new restaurant so I decided to give it a run. (Also, this place used to be the River Street Station, where I spent A LOT of time stuffing my face). Nostalgia 10/10. Taking a corner booth, I opened my menu and stared. I just wasn't sure what I needed. Nothing in particular stood out, so I settled on nachos and a single taco. Always get a taco at a Mexican place, regardless of what else you get. Get a taco. Do it. The nachos came with refried beans, shredded chicken, beef, lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream, cheese, and potentially something else I'm forgetting. I ordered a beef taco. American. On a flour shell. (American tacos usually come with lettuce, tomato, and cheese). Usually I go for the chorizo, Mexican style, but a good ol' fashioned beefer sounded good. My food arrived in a timely fashion and as usual, the nachos were piled high and my taco was wrapped up nice and neat it a little aluminum foil coffin. I was feeling spicy, so I added several large thwumps of hot sauce. And unfortunately from here, it's just kind of where things stop. I'm a fan of nachos. Who doesn't like meat, cheese, and chips. I lived off poor man nachos (chips and cheese), for a long time, and still revisit that delicacy. Though these looked fantastic, the flavor was just...off. Or maybe it was lack of spices or even spice. If it wasn't for the hot sauce, they would have just been bland. I think instead of having chicken AND beef, there should be one or the other. Mostly because I think it was the chicken that contributed to the soggy bottom of nachos. There was just a lot of juice. Know what doesn't sound appealing for nachos? Juice. The taco, though healed in meat, had good flavor. However, I think because it was wrapped in its own little sarcophagus, if you didn't eat it right away, the wetness would begin to take over and the shell would become a soggy mess. It made eating it more difficult than a normal taco. Nacho flavor 4/10 Nacho appearance 10/10 (but you can't eat appearance, now can you?)
