Walking into this place, you understand that is completely a local's bar. It's the kind of place for people bring a deck of cards, or talk union business at the bar. I had barely set foot in the door when the two bartenders at the bar greeted me warmly and welcomed me in and told me I could sit anywhere I wanted. I sat at the bar and as recommended by a local, I ordered the pepper jack crab soup, which was delicious. One thing to be aware of: don't expect real crab in the soup. Imitation only. But it's plentiful and delicious on a frigid winter day. The bartender recommended the roasted chicken or the perch, and living near another great lake and always having ready access to perch, I decided on the broasted chicken. I was not disappointed. It came with four pieces, choice, potato, and a choice of another side. It was way too its food, but I ate more than I thought they would because it was that good. Look, pal. Nothing really beats a hole in the wall pub. I'm a little huss for some good down to earth bar food, ask my mum. Situated on a corner where two roads meet, this place has all the fixin's of a place with stuff on the walls. Classic hole in the wall pub decor, classic hole in the wall pub tables and chairs. It's one of this places where when you walk in, you're there. Locals, strangers, friends, enemies, lovers. They're all there. So come on in, pull up a stool, and let's get down to business. I will say service was great. I may be a little biased as the waitress said I was the only one in her section. But I'm going to instead assume it's because I'm such an amazing patron. Hilarious and handsome to boot. Or at least the hilarious part. Hokay. So. As much as I'm a huss for bar food, I'm even hussier for wings. So, naturally I ordered the wings. Bone in, as god intended. Buffalo sauce, as Darwin intended. They came perfectly saucy, perfectly temperatured, and perfectly in a little bowl kind of thing. They were meaty and juicy. Loved the flavor. I would eat my body weight in them, and my body weight is not small numbers. I kept the main course simple. Half pound burger, deluxe (lettuce, mayo, tomato, onion). Added mustard. Ketchup's on the table. Then as my side I got the sidewinder fries which are kind of like spiral potato wedges. The burger was pretty decent. The size was good, but the flavor was a little underwhelming. I'm pretty sure the patty was one of those pre-made deals that come in packages. I could be wrong, but that's just what it looked like. Regardless, if I had ordered a burger that was more of a specialty, there might have been more flavor involved. The fries though were pretty good. They're thiccc. Thick fries save lives. I have been here before, a couple times, and would certainly come back as their menu does have a wide variety of food. Don't be bashful. Pros...friendly and fast service despite being a busy Friday night. Broasted chicken was good, juicy as promised. Asparagus bites were great! Cons...cod was average at best. Just no flavor. Tartar sauce didn't help bc the mayo taste was overwhelming. The mashed potatoes (both garlic and the ones with gravy) were just average taste and somewhat small portions for a dinner. They were out of both vegetables and rolls that are supposed to come with your meal despite going around 5:30 on a Friday. Arrived a few minutes after 1pm on a Sunday. The place was hoppin! A sign said to seat ourselves. We chose a table in the dining room. The walls are covered with beer signs, trophy fish and old antiques. Fitting for the oldest running saloon in town. Our waitress arrived promptly and took our orders. Our drinks came back quickly and we knew what we wanted. I ordered the chicken fried steak with a side of cheesesy hashbrowns (Additional $1.50), coleslaw and a roll. My friend ordered the 4 piece bbq chicken with fries, coleslaw and a roll. The wait wasn't long. 10-15 minutes if that. My chicken fried steak was good. The cheesey hasbrowns were worth the extra charge! And I don't usually like coleslaw but this was great! My friend sure did enjoy his chicken! Up in Manistee camping and Hub and I decided to try Painted Lady Saloon based on all the good reviews and it did not disappoint. Parking lot was full for a Monday night at 7:00. Walked in and it was like a walk back in time, very nostalgic, huge wrap around wooden bar in great condition with some original decor all over the restaurant. This is the oldest operating Saloon in Manistee, Circa1892!! They have a dining room on the other side of the bar area. Very busy but we were lucky to get a high top table on the bar side. Several TV's, Tiger baseball game on. Sweet waitress took care of us, they always serve 4 choices of soup, we both got a cup of the Pepper Jack cheeseburger soup and it was piping hot and delicious. I ordered the patty melt and fries, cooked perfectly, huge 1/2 pd burger, yum. Hub got the Reuben and he enjoyed his as well. Enjoyed ourselves along with the locals drinking, and cheering on the Detroit Tigers, the noise level was high but everyone was having a good time. We stopped to get something to eat and because it was Easter almost every restaurant was closed. I ordered broasted chicken and my wife ordered a grilled chicken sandwich. Her sandwich was really good, juicy and nice flavor. The broasted chicken was the best i have ever had. Very moist, tender and crunchy on the outside. The coleslaw was also very good. Found this gem thanks to Yelp! So happy we went away from the shoreline to eat here. Yes it's small, yes the decor is eclectic, yes the bathroom is only one stall, but it's worth the stop. We sat ourselves at the bar. We were greeted promptly and our drink order was served quickly. Long island ice tea and summer shandy on tap. We had the duck wonton appetizer, chicken wings, and walleye. Everything served warm and prompt. People coming and going all the time. Super packed but comfortable. Best Fish Fry in town! Arrived around 5pm on a Friday and they were busy! Friendly servers greet you and help find a table (although I think it's seat yourself). We started with fried pickles and mozzarella sticks. Pretty good. The side salads are just big enough and include dried cranberries. Nice touch. All four of us ordered the special Cod Fish Fry and you should ask about the vast potato choices: fries, side winders, baked potato, broasted, sweet potato fries...veggie choice is coleslaw, apple sauce, cottage cheese or mixed veg. The bar area has an old timey decorated barwall and tin ceilings. It all works to make a fun atmosphere. I ordered the Broasted (2) Pork Chops ($14), with red skin potatoes and a garden salad ($2 upgrade). The pork chops looked great, taste wise though they were only a little above average. I needed ketchup to eat it. The salad was very good and redskins were excellent, my favorite thing in fact. The service was excellent. Friendly and quick even though they were packed and hectic. Overall a 3 1/2 star review. Since I need to round, I've decided to go up. This is because they seem really popular and I really enjoyed the atmosphere. Would I return? I have to take a couple steps back.. I hope this isn't going to be par for the course going forward but food, service is slipping. Wife and I went in to eat she ordered the special, Hot roast beef sandwich with potatoes and I the broasted chicken. After approximately 25, 30 minutes the waitress comes out and says sorry we are out of the special and asks my wife if she would like to order something else and she does. The waitress then brings my food out as she places my wife's other order in. Poor communication between waitress and cooks, I shared my dinner with my wife as she did the same with me when her order came out another 25 minutes later. Went for dinner here based upon all the great reviews. Well, those reviews had to be planted by staff. Tried the broasted chicken. It was tough and chewy. The mashed potatoes are totally instant, scooped into a lake of butter. The vegetables were frozen and barely warm, as was the dinner roll. I could only manage a few bites. It's a neighborhood gem. Immediately upon entering, you feel the history of Manistee. It's like meeting an old friend. The tin ceiling and carved wood bar make any Michigander feel at home. We order four grilled sandwiches to go: ham & cheese, Reuben and BLT. All with chips and pickle spear. The clear winner was the BLT. You could tell the bread was lovingly toasted to perfection, the bacon also cooked to a T with hand-leafed ice burg lettuce and ripe tomato. What's more: the staff could not have been nicer.
