Experience 1: Taking my child in for an evaluation (we went to three local orthodontists; this was our first appointment.) Started off pleasantly enough but became so high pressure that I couldn't wait to get out. It was an intense husband/wife tag team! I've heard from others that the pressure to sign a contract immediately is not rare. I explained that we were evaluating several practices and that I certainly wanted to discuss their plan and cost with my husband. It's a big decision, a big investment and a long-term commitment. Yikes! Way, way too pushy for me. Extremely uncomfortable first impression that insured we would not be coming back. Experience 2: Took a friend's child to numerous appointments over several months. Never once felt graciously welcomed. The poor creatures hiding behind the weirdly high counter seemed consistently put out and utterly miserable. How sad to work or spend time in this kind of environment. Life is too short. I'm sure they do fine work at a competitive price (all local places we checked were comparable in terms of $$$. Just apples and oranges in terms of attitude.) But, seriously! Have an office meeting and clear the air. Lighten up. First impressions really do matter. AND so does being gracious when your clients (no matter their age) come to see you. In the end, we chose another practice with what we felt was a better plan for our child, a far more relaxed and positive approach to the process and an extremely congenial staff. read more

I got braces a couple of days ago and they did a great job! Telling me what they were doing step by step and then afterwards walked me through how to clean by teeth with videos. They also have video games and ipads for you to play with. and everybody is really nice! They have a rewards program and every 50 points you get (for doing everything they told you and wearing your N.C.O shirt) $5.00 for a gift card! read more

My eight year old is just starting ortho treatment and we were referred here by his dentist. From our first appointment we have been very happy with this office and staff. Everyone is friendly and knowledgable, from the front office to Dr Schabel. Each procedure has been thoroughly explained to us, all our questions have been answered and the work is being done efficiently with minimal stress to my son. The office is clean and bright and has video games to keep a kid occupied while they wait for their appointment. I don't know how I can even begin to describe my experience at North Coast Orthodontics. When I decided to get braces at the age of 23 I was a bit hesitant. I had never had braces before and didn't know what to expect. I had a very narrow mouth with lots of crowding in my teeth and I found that I had a hard time cleaning them. A lot of people just want braces to have that gorgeous smile which of course I wanted too but it was more than that. I wanted to be able to have a healthy smile. I started doing some research and came across North Coast Orthodontics. I took a look at their website and was so impressed at how organized and easy everything was to find and knew I had to call the office and get and appointment. Dr. Schabel took the time to explain each treatment and answer any questions I had about them. Immediately after having my consultation I knew I wanted to proceed with treatment. I decided to get the ceramic braces and was extremely pleased with how unnoticeable they were. Dr. Schabel also asked if I would like to try this newer technology called Acceledent. He explained that it could cut my treatment down from 2 years to 16 months, which for me was a no brainer. The Acceledent made having braces so easy. It's a device that you place in your mouth for 20 minutes every day that vibrates to help the teeth transition easily. Let me tell you this little thing helps with the pain A LOT and as Dr. Schabel said it did cut my treatment to 16 months. Now that my treatment is over I am over the moon happy about my smile and I would HIGHLY recommend North Coast Orthodontics. The entire staff is extremely nice, knowledgeable and always 100% professional. They are always on time so you aren't ever siting in the waiting room. They are right there to answer any questions you have about your treatment whether it be at your appointment, over the phone or in an email. I did extensive research on Orthodontic businesses in Santa Cruz and finally chose North Coast Orthodontics for it's friendly and cooperative staff, it's up to date equipment and most of all the expertise of Dr. Brian Schabel and Dr. Vivian Chan. I am a 62 year old male who felt the need for their services and can not express how pleased I was with their year long service and thoroughness of having braces with them. My experience at North Coast Orthodontics was so wonderful that I feel like I need to share it with our community. I never had braces growing up and my teeth were 'ok' but as I got older they started moving around and I did not like my smile anymore! It took me a good couple of years of researching and thinking about the other alternatives before I decided to get braces. So at the age of 59 I did it - I got braces! From the first day when I went in for my consult to the day I got my braces off I was treated great! I actually had so much fun with the entire staff - they all made me feel comfortable and calm. And one of the best parts for me - I got GOLD braces! I've had my braces off now for less than a month and I was actually a little sad to get them off!!! I enjoyed the process that much (really!). My braces were on for only 18 months which was exactly what Dr. Schabel told me in the beginning. My appointments were always scheduled at a time that worked for my busy work schedule and I was never kept waiting. The day I got my braces off was one week after my 61st birthday - the reason I share that is because it is NEVER too late to get braces. I actually cried when I saw my new smile and compared it to my 'before' picture. I recommend North Coast Orthodontics to anybody and everybody! The office is as great and fun as the entire staff is! From the first time I walked into North Coast it was a very friendly and energetic environment. After a few more visits I began to get acquainted with the very nice staff and they always greeted me at the door by name. I have never had any issues, and honestly do not know how anyone could. My teeth are moving along great and on pace with my goal date set by Dr. Schabel. My son just had his braces removed after two years. This place really is amazing in every regard - the whole office set-up is clean, well designed, beyond efficient, child friendly, and very professional. I can't write enough about Dr. Schabel and the staff at North Coast Orthodontics. Today was a joyous day because my 17 year old's braces were removed. We first visited Dr. Schabel when my son was in 6th grade. We had known that Nate was going to need major jaw surgery down the road but needed to have braces beforehand. The process was 6 years and I'm so grateful to say that due to the skill of both Dr. Schabel and the surgeon, my son now has the most beautiful teeth and smile. More importantly his bite and other problems were corrected and his jaw now functions as it should. It took a lot of communication, coordination between Dr. Schabel and the surgeon and throughout the whole process I knew my son was in the very best hands. Dr. Schabel took the time to talk with Nate through the various concerns he had during his treatment at NCO, regarding the surgery, the frustration of wearing braces as a teen etc he treated Nate with respect and helped Nate stay focused. The surgery took place on Dec. 23rd 2013 and I have to say it was a very long day-5 hrs of surgery then an overnight at the hospital. I was completely and happily surprised to see Dr. Schabel walk into Nate's hospital room that evening to check on him and to see how he was doing. He truly cares about his patients. My son and I are both patients of Dr. Schabel and could not be happier with our experiences. My son has been through a palet expander, retainers and braces with Dr. Schabel for the last 4 years and we are happier than ever with the outcome. His teeth are not only perfect, but the experience was so easy for him, that he never complained about having to go to his appointments. After seeing what a wonderful job he was doing on my son, I signed on for braces too! The office has been wonderful. The staff is incredible and very on top of things.
