My wife and I have been trying to check out a lot of spots lately that have opened recently. This was our latest addition to that. With both of us working manual labor jobs in the 90+ degree day we had zero intention of cooking. So perfect excuse to check this place out. Despite driving by it many times in the past we never stopped by Samuels so have no comparison for better or worse that many may have. Overall the ambiance/vibes are sports bar/dive bar. Knowing this we had reasonable set expectations and accepted we would likely be getting "bar food". This was quite accurate in the end. Their menu has a decently wide amount of options that even picky eaters would likely find something they want. Burgers, pizzas, sandwiches, salads, apps to name some options. They had no cocktail list but a full bar so they should be able to make you any drink you'd like. We got Philly egg rolls as an app to split and it was a tasty start. My wife got their open face turkey sandwich, she thought much of it was colder than expected and overall not impressed too much. The potatoes that came with it were seasoned well and tasty though. I got their Cajun fried chicken sandwich and it was decent, but many other chicken sandwiches are overall better. Their fries were seasoned well and crispy though. Service was leaning closer to the bad side with long times in between seeing our server and also they weren't very attentive despite not being that busy. In the end I will say give the place a try for yourself as you may enjoy it more. Nothing food wise was great enough to push us to return. Their true appeal would be the bar/drinks, yet for me I would still go elsewhere that gave a little more effort into the cocktails/having a drink list. It's nice to see some creativeness with cocktails.

Our first visit to North Deering Tavern. I know they opened not long ago, so figure they are still working out some bugs, but overall, we felt they were on the right track and we had an enjoyable meal for a reasonable price. First off, our waitress was sweet and attentive. She checked on us throughout our meal and requests were brought immediately. The food was overall good and with a few tweaks could be great. We started with the loaded nachos. Now, we are huge nacho connoisseurs and often judge a place on their nachos. They came out loaded with top cheesy layer and crispy edges, so we were excited. That excitement was diminished once we got through the top layer and the lower layers of chips and veggies were naked. When a restaurant can achieve the multilayer chip & cheese approach, where 'nar a chip is without cheese throughout, they earn our utmost respect. The salsa was jarred and average. No guac was disappointing. Keep working on it, kids. My son enjoyed his smashburger and fries. My husband had the dirty chicken tenders. The good - they are fresh cut chicken breast. The bad - could be the dirty style which has the sauce put on before frying, but they were a little dry/overcooked. I had the blackened fish sandwich which was on a nice brioche roll with lettuce and tomato. It was fresh tasting and I enjoyed it. I liked their coleslaw, which was mayonnaise based. One tip on both the burger and sandwich. There were no pickles on the side. A good pickle spear elevates a sandwich experience and finishes off a plate. Highly suggest. The beer menu was extensive, but noticed there was no cocktail menu other than some canned seltzers. Suggest some signature cocktails be developed and offered. We will be back to try again.

Twice in one week to see how things go at the bar. So far our visits seem to be at the same table the last two visits and now we finally got stools at the bar. Pub feel with the bar lined with regulars who are having an open conversation across the bar. The seats we took were in the "Splash zone" which we found to be a true story! Occasionally the taps will "burp" from air in the line and beer will splash up from the glass. Thankfully we did not have food yet but were resourceful making use of the condiments caddie. We had their Chicken cordon blue sandwich, I am a sucker for every time and hubby had their fish and chips. Side of gravy for our fries too. Quick timing for our food to come out and with no issues. Bun was not burnt nor was the chicken over done like the first trip here. Fish and chips were amazing! Batter was not dense or heavy, light and complimented the haddock. Sweet potato fries for my man were very good with the right amount of crispy outside and tender inside. Service was great with the bartender happy to answer my portion question around the fish sandwich and meal. Meal gives you more fish. Being that this establishment is literally around the block from us, they will be seeing more of us. Great job and again, Welcome to North Deering tavern folks

It's also one of the spots that has started doing an UNREAL late night happy hour. Honestly, I don't know what folks are doing these days where a bar is so empty at 9pm on a Friday night (seems to be a nation wide trend) but many of the off peninsula bars are doing these late night happy hours and you should really take advantage. For take-out we're big fans of the tender dinner or just three tendies with buffalo sauce. This past Friday we took advantage of the deal and got 6 smoked wings with jerk dry rub and house sauce, fried cauliflower (so good), and some drinks. Here's the breakdown of the deal: 8pm-close $1 wings $2 Ice pik drinks $3 16oz drafts $5 apps

The inside of the restaurant is very nice, easy to find, and they have plenty of parking, which is always a huge plus. The food was definitely the star of the show. We started with the fried mushrooms with ranch, and they were absolutely fantastic--highly recommend sharing a basket of these! For the main courses: Pulled Pork Dinners: My husband and daughter both ordered this and said it was absolutely fantastic. Wing Dinner: My son-in-law loved his wings. Quesadilla: I had the quesadilla, which was decent flavor-wise, but a bit messy to eat because most of the filling fell right out as soon as I picked it up. The highlight of the entire meal was the cornbread muffin served with honey butter. It was honestly the best cornbread I have ever tasted! The portions here are massive, making it very easy for our granddaughter to pick a little bit off everyone's plates, and we still all came home with boxes of leftovers. I love the names of the kid's meals, so creative!! The only minor downsides were that the service was just "okay" (nothing bad, just didn't really stand out), and they had live country music playing. While the music itself wasn't bad, I'm personally not a fan of the genre and found it a bit too loud for conversation. The incredible food and great atmosphere mean we will definitely be back.

I do wish I would have returned sooner and/or may need to come back one more time before they close. Street parking nearby was easy enough to find. Walking in mid day on Saturday it wasn't too busy so after a short wait we were sat down. Which then lead to the biggest negative of our experience which was waiting for being greeted and also orders being taken. Granted our server did apologize and thank us for our patience. We started off with a cocktail I had the California Sour (had a good bourbon kick) and my wife had the Pineapple Rum Punch and enjoyed it. I enjoyed their rotating speciality pizza that was a Chicken Bacon Ranch and it was delicious top notch pizza. My wife got the Fried Chicken Vodka Parm Sandwich and the chicken was cooked to perfection! We also tried their appetizer of Scrappy Fries and it was a perfect app for our table to share and the meat scraps stood and had so much flavor to it. Every thing we had today was phenomenal and wish we had come here sooner!

The blueberry seltzer was also really good and refreshing! On the food side, a couple of minor drawbacks: the bowl only came with four small pieces of meat, which didn't feel worth the price, and the Flaming Arrow was extremely messy because it was drowning in way too much buffalo sauce. That said, the service completely made up for it! Our server, Kyle, was fantastic--super friendly, attentive, and our food came out really fast. The restaurant has a great vibe, cool decor, and fair prices overall. The only other issue was that the bathroom could have been a little cleaner. Worth a visit, but hopefully they tweak the bowl portions and sauce on the Flaming Arrow!
