I used to take my old Chrysler 300M here when I attended Marist. As a female and a college student, it was easy for mechanics to assume I knew nothing and charge me for insane things. It had happened before. I was driving on Route 9 when something twanged and my car pitched to the right--I thought it was a flat tire. Got out to check: all tires fine. Called a tow guy, confused and frightened to drive. He couldn't find an issue, either. We drove a little together down the road and the car pitched again. Still couldn't see an issue. I took the car in to North Road Auto the next morning (barely making it as the steering was almost non-existent). I explained the issue and dropped the car. A few hours later I got a call back from Mike asking how I managed to drive the car in, and how one of my strut mounts had sheered clean in half. I had no idea what that meant, but before I could even ask, Mike had me come back to the car and go outside with him, where he proceeded to pop the hood and show me where my strut mounts were, what they did, why mine cracked, what that means, and what to look for in the future. Turned out my previous mechanic shop charged me for 2 strut mount replacements and only did 1. Mike and his team also dealt with a lot of other minor issues my aging car threw at me, and they always explained everything thoroughly and charged fairly. Now that I'm back in the Poughkeepsie area, I plan on taking all of my current and future cars to North Road. read more

My daughter attends college across the street from North rd auto. We were returning to get her belongings and car to drive back to Illinois. She noticed an odd sound, when she drove her car. So we brought it across the street. Upon inspection John and Billy noticed the brakes needed to be replaced. We were scheduled to leave the next day with a Uhaul trailer back to Illinois. John and Billy made it happen. They went above and beyond to make sure the car would be safe to make the long drive home. Everything was checked including an issue with the trailer hitch and lights. I cannot say how thankful I was for their honest trustworthy service; and they were able to accommodate our schedule and help us have a safe drive back to Illinois. The only sad thing is, i can't use their service anymore. The communication, the pictures of the work that needed to be done, the results from the inspection they performed...I was very impressed with the service we received at last minute and under such circumstances. Bill and John deserve a much better Yelp rating! My husband and I were interested in a car from Craigslist and wanted to get it inspected to make sure we were making a good purchase. I called 3 different businesses in Poughkeepsie and just from the phone call they sounded the most serious (asking background questions about the car, instead of saying "just show up and we'll check it"), so I picked them. When we brought the car, everything went great. They inspected it and gave us transparent and honest feedback, pointing out what was good, and what had a bit of wear and tear and could potentially need to be serviced in the near future, without being pushy or falsely alarming. They were generous on advice and tips. After purchasing the car we went back to fix a broken mirror that could have been problematic for the DMV inspection ; everything was well organized and efficient to fix the problem. The initial service (car inspection before a purchase) was a little bit more expensive than similar businesses in Poughkeepsie but well worth it. Bonus, they're really friendly and talkative. If you are a parent with a child away at college in Poughkeepsie this is the place to deal with. As someone who worked in the automobile business for over 30 years I hate dealing with most repair shops. They are usually incompetent, unprofessional and spend more time trying to sell things people don't really need and then overcharging for it. North Road Auto was completely the opposite. When my daughter had an issue with her vehicle while at Marist College I happened to be out of state and dreaded the thought of having a stranger work on her vehicle. After making a few phone calls I was fortunate enough to speak to John at North Road and decided to have him repair my daughters Jeep. I cannot praise him enough! Not only was he professional and courteous, the work was fairly priced and they also treated my daughter well and kept both of us up to date on the progress and completion of repair. I have owned a lot of vehicles in my life and as a result, I've had a lot of experience with mechanics - not all of them good. When I feel scammed or taken advantage of, they will never see me or one dollar of my money ever again. This is absolutely NOT a concern with North Road Auto. My son is at Marist College with one of the (kid) vehicles and he has had a couple of lights go on and other things gone wrong. Every single person I have ever dealt with at North Road Auto has been polite, transparent, thorough, professional, and most importantly, they have demonstrated they are extremely knowledge in ALL car types, including German vehicles. Every mechanic, the owner, John, the front office person, Lori - each of them and all of them are fantastic and I highly recommend them. If I lived up there they would be my mechanics for all 3 of my cars. For any parent with a child at school who comes across an auto problem (and it will happen), don't hesitate to call North Road Auto. Highly recommended. Been going to North Road for at least two and half years now for two main reasons. First is that this is the only shop that I have found in this area that doesn't try and sell you everything under the sun. No "you need this and that" just from trying to get an oil change. Second is that the prices aren't bad at all. First shop I went to when I moved here, right off of 44, charged me $83 for an oil change along with one other minor service (cabin filter change) that I did not ask for. I greatly appreciate finding a mechanic that I don't feel ripped off while I'm there. Mike, at the front desk, is brutally honest and will let you know everything that he knows about the situation with your vehicle. This has been something extremely hard to find in auto shops and is something that I greatly appreciate. Try stopping in for something basic and see how you like the place. I am a new customer to North Road Auto, but let me tell you that they will be the only place I take my car from now on. From the moment I walked in the door the owner John greeted me, knew my name, and was polite but very simplistic in his explaining of the way things would be broken down. Not only were his prices exceptional, but he also sends you reminders on when it's time to get an oil change and things of that nature. I haven't been to many auto shops, but the few that I have do not even come close to the level that John is on. I do not know too many business owners who give up an entire other business just to devote more time to customers, ensuring their cars get the car and time they deserve. I love going to North Road Auto, have been going there for years. For several years, I had a "beater" car. What I really loved about them was that they never pushed for the most expensive repair, or tried telling me I needed something when I didn't . They understand it was a car I was nursing along, and did just enough repairs to keep it safe and driveable. They could have lied and told me a more expensive repair was needed, and I wouldn't have known the difference, but they never did. The customer service is great, the place is spotless and convenient to my work. Mike has always been great about getting me in in an emergency and making sure I was taken care of. I just recently moved here from TN, and I had shopped around online for a place to take my car. After settling on North Road, I brought my car in for an estimate on replacing my brakes and rotors. After inspection, John took me out in the Bay Area to not only explain, but also to show me that they really didn't need to be changed; however, they did recommend some other small things that needed to be repaired/changed. Three words come to mind when I think of N. Rd.: "Above and beyond". I have been taking my cars there since it opened and have had nothing but positive experiences. John and crew had several opportunities to rip me off through the years but always erred on the side of honesty. You will not find a more honest, trustworthy, knowledgeable car shop ANYWHERE. I've been taking my cars to North Road Auto and John's other car shops for over 20 years. I would rather bring my car to John than to the dealerships. The dealerships costs more for service and they try to scare you by saying to trade the car in for a new one. Overall I was pleased with my first visit to North Road Auto. Work done was a NYS inspection, Oil change and a tire rotation was suggested and I did do that also. Additional work was suggested based on my vehicle manufacturer scheduled maintenance. I accepted quotes for the future work. I waited for the service to be done and felt the time was appropriate for the work done. They will be getting a second visit in the future. read more

This car service team positively impressed me. I stopped in on my way home from work on a Friday, to have a low tire pressure check. I was treated promptly and with such kindness at the end of their long day. A nail was identified and the tire taken care of and back on the road in less than 30 minutes!! Outstanding.
