Overall, it was a fun experience out on a lovely day with my best friend! I think that Jan is very knowledgeable and has a cool program. Ambrosia was so kind and welcoming and good with the horses! I did not book the experience, but I was more expecting a trail ride that you show up at a certain time, ride for an hour, and then head out. I was not expecting to stay 2 and a half hours tacking up, grooming, and bathing. As a horse person myself, I do not mind the work that goes into caring for a horse throughout the whole process- but it was just not what I was expecting. So be prepared to take the thorough time to learn all aspects of grooming, tacking, and aftercare. The ride itself was fun and exciting in a new location on a new horse on some beautiful trails. Jan was very knowledgeable on the areas we were riding, and pointed out some cool beaver dams. I rode Gem, and my friend rode Chili who were very well behaved equine partners. You can tell that they are well loved and treated with kindness and respect. It was a very hot and humid day, and I liked that we took walking breaks for the horses to cool down a bit and it wasn't too strenuous for the horses. As a horse person, I believe that the owner knows what is best for the horses. I am aware that I don't have the extensive knowledge and experience as Jan, and she does what is best for her horses. With that being said, I had some minor concerns. I was slightly concerned with the lack of tendon protection on the bush-whacking part of the trail ride. I was also concerned with the saddle fit on the horses. I am not a saddle fitter and I acknowledge that, but there was minimal wither clearance on the saddle that was put on Gem. I understand this is a riding school and saddle fitting to horse and rider can be an insurmountable task, and that gem did not show any visible signs of discomfort. There was a girth rub on gem, and I wish there was a fuzzy sleeve on the girth or maybe some shoulder stretches to help prevent further rubbing. Jan definitely knows her stuff, and seems to be a very experienced horse person. She can be gruff and stern at some times. I do recognize that safety is at the forefront of her business, but I wish she spoke in a more professional manner and explained more on what her expectations were. Again, it was a cool experience to ride a different horse in a different location and get to enjoy horses, friends, and beautiful scenery. I was completely shocked at how bad my experience with North Road Farm was. Based on the number of great reviews they have online I expected a very fun relaxing ride on the beach, and expected Jan would be a very kind person who makes people feel right at home. I'm sorry to say that was not even remotely close to what I experienced. I booked a private ride at Hampton Beach last month and I was so excited for it. That excitement quickly dissipated when I first arrived at the farm. Jan was extremely standoffish, unwelcoming, and rude. She spoke to me like I'm an idiot and snapped at me multiple times. For example: she asked about my experience with horses and riding, so I told her I grew up riding horses, competed in hunter/jumpers when I was a teenager, owned a horse for 11 years, and a couple of years ago I got back into riding and currently take English riding lessons once a week. She snapped at me "Well I'm going to need more information than that!" ...Okay, then why don't you ask me specific questions? I can't read minds and I have no idea what exactly you want to know, I simply provided what I thought was a sufficient summary of my experience. There's absolutely no need to be rude to me about it. Another example: after I finished grooming the horse I was assigned, I asked Jan if she wanted me to put the saddle on now or if we wait until we're at the beach to tack up the horses. She snapped at me: "Yes, put the saddle on now, and do it CORRECTLY!" Again, there was no need for me to be spoken to that way. I just asked a simple question. Jan's attitude towards me very bizarrely changed after she saw that I know how to tie a slip knot. She said to me "Wow, I'm very impressed!" and at that point her demeanor softened a bit. She would act kind and friendly towards me, but then she would revert back to speaking harshly and randomly snapping at me. It was an extremely strange, hot-and-cold back and forth from her. I couldn't tell if or when I was going to say or do something that would apparently irritate her, so I was extremely anxious and uncomfortable the entire time. The horse I had been assigned to ride was a sweet mare, but not my idea of a suitable trail mount. By the time we arrived at the beach she had already worked herself into a nervous sweat, anxiously whinnied several times throughout the ride, didn't want to stand still, and didn't want to go near the water. (which of course Jan blamed me for, even though I was following her instructions for how that particular horse needs to be ridden) Despite my riding experience I am not a perfect rider nor a very confident one, and I honestly felt this horse was too much for me to handle. At one point I felt like I even lost control despite doing my best to steer and hold the horse together, and I nearly crashed into Jan, which caused the horse she was riding to kick mine. Jan claimed that all of her horses are calm, fun to ride, and love the beach...but the one I rode did not fit that description at all. My own anxiety that I was already feeling because of Jan's treatment of me could have very well been contributing to the horse being anxious, so even if I had been given a very calm horse the ride was probably doomed no matter what. I put on a brave face and pretended to have fun, but inside I felt like crying. I could not believe I spent $350 to be repeatedly snapped at by a strange woman and to be scared while riding a horse instead of having fun. At the end of the ride Jan told me I'm a great person and it was fun to ride with me, which made me so confused. After being rude to me, snapping at me numerous times, and treating me like I'm stupid...now I'm suddenly a great person and she wishes we could ride together again? I'm sorry, what?! Altogether it was a bitter disappointment, the worst trail ride I have ever been on, and not at all worth the hefty price tag. I cannot recommend North Road Farm to anyone. read more

I would not recommend doing the beach ride. In my opinion the owner Jan was rude and condescending. We got to the stables and she asked me how much riding experience I had and we went back and forth because somehow she didn't understand what I was saying. When we got to the beach, all we did was slowly walk to one end and back. often times Jan would scream when my horse stared trotting or we walked ahead. This is very different from what they advertised and the whole reason I was drawn to this activity, I assumed that we would go faster than a walk because I saw the advertisement of a horse cantering on the beach. payed 500 dollars and gave a good tip to Jan and most of the time she was mean except for the couple of times she said that my form was looking good. I felt like I was being judged by her for my lack of knowledge on some parts and she made it seem like the biggest deal and made me feel bad that I didn't know some techniques. It was treated like a chore for her to take me down to ride. I was under the impression that the ride would be a little more eventful. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this, because it's way overpriced for what you actually get to do which is walk down the beach for maybe an hour. read more

I wanted to schedule a trail ride for myself while visiting New Hampshire. I contacted Jan an entire month prior to my visit and told her the date I would be in town and would like to ride. I also spoke with her on the phone in great detail about my riding experience, the date, etc. Per her request, I filled out the waiver on her website as well. When the time came- my husband and I booked an AIRBNB and made sure it was close to Jans stable. For days I called and texted her with no response back. I had packed my English riding boots which took up a lot of space in my suitcase. At 1:00 in the afternoon on the day I was supposed to go riding, Jan finally messaged me back and told me "she needed to check her schedule" and "would get back to me later" in regards to my ride. Later when? That day? The day was already nearly over and due to her poor lack of communication I had to make super last minute arrangements somewhere else. To sum things up- I am completely disappointed by Jans unprofessionalism and being someone that also owns and runs an equestrian facility- I am shocked by how poor her communication was. I was led on for a month only to be let down the day of. I do not recommend this facility. read more

Not able to actually get in a ride, but really impressed with Jan's speedy communication! I was trying to arrange a couple riding lessons for my niece when she visits. Jan is booked up, but she responded to my email in less than 20 minutes even though she was really busy at a show on a holiday weekend. I would have given this 0 starts but that wasn't an option. The price you pay to learn about saddles and ride for 20 minutes was complete bull crap. Her attitude towards myself and my daughter were not ok. We have never ridden a horse before. I was uncomfortable with how spooked my horse kept getting so she then yells at me then tries to calm herself down and tries to be all sweet. She did lead my horse back to house but only after getting frustrated with me and making me feel like my concerns were nothing. The horse then bit my daughters belly after she was told she could pet it. Then my daughter gets yelled at because she is "not experienced and didn't know how to pet a horse". All she did was try to pet the side of his face. The horse i was on also bit my daughters horse which caused her horse to jump which scared my daughter. This was the biggest waste of time and money. We told her in the beginning we had to leave by 2:30 and we paid from 12-2 we rode from 1:50 to 2:20. We had made it to the trail and she informed us it was 45 minutes to do the trail. Well it was 2:15 so having to leave at 2:30 so that wouldn't work. She knew how long the trail would take and waited until last minute to get us on the horses.
