I recently dealt with a dishonest and unethical contractor, North Seattle Handyman Services. Peter is now the sole proprietor at NSHMS, but he resorts to dirty tricks. 1. Breach of contract - He promised me a "senior citizen discount," which he mentioned several times. A discount would be a reduction in the normal price. Without telling me or asking for my OK, he removed part of the necessary work from the contract. Yes, he reduced the price a very small amount, but removed some of the work that we had agreed upon. After I got mad, he created a new invoice to get this work done. Only, he added on much more money to the new invoice. There was no discount on anything. He lied. 2. No refund of customer deposits - On his computer system you pay "retainer fees" to get an appointment scheduled. He does not inform the customer that it is non-refundable. I paid on April 20, 2026 $284.67 and June 29, 2026 $276.38 for a total of $561.05. He pocketed the money and refused to refund it. 3. Exterior painting - On the second invoice he charged $600 and left 1/3 of the painting undone. I complained, and there was no response. 4. He broke one of my phone jacks, rendering it unusable, and made no offer to fix it. read more

Despite my initial enthusiasm for the service, I encountered several issues that diminished my satisfaction. Like many other Handy-person companies have begun doing in the last five years or so, they impose a minimum time limit to ensure a minimum service fee. I required several basic repairs around my residence, which necessitated the use of a ladder, screws, and a screw anchor. One repair was time-sensitive, and the company initially offered immediate repairs but suggested returning a few weeks later due to them being booked up. This approach was reasonable and appreciated. However, after further communication with the company, I discovered for the time sensitive repair, they required a $250 deposit prior to any work starting, and would charge their minimum two-hour fee of $300. The job involved simply reattaching one side of an outdoor sun shade, resulting in an estimated total of $820.85 for all of the repairs. As a homeowner I've had several estimates and repairs completed by Handy-person services over the last few decades, but this one has to be the most unreasonable. In contrast, I contacted another Handy-person service company today that arrived at my residence within 30 minutes of my initial contact.They provided an on-site estimate and completed all the necessary repairs in a single hour. The total cost was $110.50, which included tax. This experience met my expectations. The service was reasonably priced, and the handyman was professional and skilled. I now have established a go-to handyman who I can build a lengthy business relationship, year after year. It is unacceptable to ask customers to pay for labor before the work is completed. Materials may be charged, but labor should not be. So glad I found this new Handyman service company. I will definitely be leaving a positive review for them. read more

Our washing machine sits on an uneven floor and likes to go walkabout during the spin cycle. I'd it wasn't leashed by its hoses it would have eloped by now. The imbalance also leads to aborted spin cycles and wet loads. I'd seen on YouTube handy people fixing the problem but I don't have the time or even the basic skills to do that. Fortunately, these guys do! Took maybe four hours. They built a sturdy level platform for the washer and dryer and now we have dry laundry and a washing machine that sits still. We initially purchased a replacement ladder thinking we could DIY the install but quickly realized we were in over our heads. We choose North Seattle Handyman to do our bathroom remodel last Spring and we couldn't be more happy with their craftsmanship. Before the remodel we had problems with the drain from our tub stopping up on a regular basis and also problems with dry rot in the floor around the shower. We had our cabinet above the refrigerator pull off the wall after 10 years with nothing done to it at the time to cause the failure. Dan came out and gave us two options; fix the current one with inside bracing and better support or, for more than the quoted price, take it down and rebuild the whole thing. We opted for the less expensive option and he did an excellent job. Couldn't be happier with his work, his pleasant demeanor and explanations. The only reason I'm giving it a four stars instead of five is that the company charged us for materials PLUS a 25% markup. We felt the markup was a bit steep. It wasn't a lot of money but just the principle of the thing. Of course we would expect to pay for materials, but not 25% more. Bottom line though is that, if you need a handyman, these guys are great...at least Dan was and we WILL use them again. Be also advised that they charge 3% extra if you pay by credit card, which is something a lot of companies are doing. No big deal but nice to know. read more

Our small kitchen remodel was the second project we had North Seattle Handyman do in our home. The kitchen space is in the oldest part of the house which began its life in the 1920s as a Summer getaway cabin for Seattle residents. So we had to do a complete remodel down to the walls including removing the old drafty windows and installing a new one. It was a difficult remodel because, as carpenters did in the day; (although they had plenty of wood and used it profusely), they didn't construct anything on the square. That's what NSH had to work with and they did a splendid job removing the old cabinets and shelves, hanging and texturing new drywall, installing the new cabinets, putting in a new floor, tiling the walls between the wall cabinets and counter, installing and venting the range hood to the outside, the plumbing, painting, insulation and because I was a licensed electrical contractor at one time, they accommodated me to do the electrical. And they worked with me on that part of the project. And in the end we have a beautiful new kitchen thanks to Caleb and his crew. Caleb's communication was excellent. They are friendly, courteous and great to work with. They are accommodating and they will not hesitate to make changes if something isn't quite right. They arrived on time when they said they would. And Caleb would call me before hand if there was a problem with arriving on time or other problems arose.
