Though I never really had the chance to enter a Suffolk County library until I moved to Ronkonkoma and learned that my home library is the media Mecca that is Sachem. If you're at all familiar with the Best of LI awards that are divvied out each year, then you'll know that Sachem Public Library has almost exclusively won this accolade over the past decade. I honestly never cared too much about this fact because Sachem seemed so far, but now my newish abode is only 5 minutes away from this superb book spot. Even before I ever entered Sachem Library's doors I was already impressed. That's because I feared it would take some time to get a library card with my change of address and needing an updated license. Nope! Sachem allows you to register for a library card on their website and then they'll send you this little key chain library card tag to your home. I was amazed by this, and already excitedly looking forward to my first trip there. This came over the summer when they were in full swing of their reading programs, both for kids and adults. Even though the event was halfway over, I was able to easily sign up and was given a little welcome bag and a chance to win some prizes for my reading. Unfortunately, I was a little too busy this past summer to read at a speedy clip (wedding planning will do that to you), but this just added to the enjoyment of Sachem. When actually exploring the interior and what Sachem has to offer, there are tons of books, movies, video games, and programs available. I'm also massively impressed with Suffolk County's digital borrowing program over Nassau as well as what's out there to be inter-loaned from other Suffolk libraries to Sachem. My first trip there was to actually pick up a couple of movies I had ordered and came in for pickup quite quickly. That trip, the summer sign up, and my experiences since have also all resulted in friendly staff and a desire to return again and again. Overall, maybe libraries are a little outdated or they feel like something you haven't visited in years, but I promise you that Sachem Public Library has so much to offer (I forgot to mention the beautiful serene garden across the parking lot that you can walk through and read in!). It's easy to see why Sachem wins awards each year and effortlessly puts other libraries to shame (like my hometown one, sorry not sorry). So consider this library weirdo somebody who will continue to love Sachem.

The two women behind the desk in the children's room were noticeably unfriendly and unapproachable. Their unnecessary comments and disapproving looks toward the toddlers' normal play behavior created an uncomfortable atmosphere. A children's area should be a place that encourages joy, learning, and community -- not one where families feel unwelcome.

So after hitting the Yale Center for British Art, we speed walked (sped walked?) over to the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. Why? Google it and you'll understand when you see the pictures. Beinicke is Yale's rare book and manuscript library - not their main university library or their law library. The reading room is open to registered researchers only, but the public are welcome to visit the library's exhibition hall. And everyone visiting New Haven should! The library was built in 1963, and the the architecture is incredible. The building is a granite veneer shell, fastened to a structural steel frame. Inside that structure is a glass-enclosed tower of book cases. The granite was milled to 1.25 inches thick to allow filtered daylight in - in the afternoon/early evening, the marble turned an amber color. We walked back past it at night for a different view of the building. It is really incredible architecture, and the library hosts exhibits you can see in the exhibition hall when you visit to enjoy the building (when we visited, the exhibit was "Taught By the Pen: The World of Islamic Manuscripts"). The building is incredible and definitely worth a visit if you're exploring the Yale campus!

The general public has limited access, and this will be a short stop for most people, depending upon the exhibit. Noise: The "mezzanine and lower stacks" is the main study space with the most tables and chairs. Unfortunately, the space is next to the main entrance/front desk area without any separating doors, so it can be loud. Headphones will probably be important if you need to focus. The room is also right below the children's room, so you can sometimes hear kids footsteps running around. They also allow tutoring. There's a "quiet reading room" across the lobby from the main study area, but it is also right next to the main lobby without any separating doors, so I imagine it's also loud. There's not a lot of carpet and a lot of laminate, so noises tend to echo. Limited desks and few plugs: There are only four small desks with plugs (eight seats in total, but the tables are small and it would be super weird if someone you didn't know sat next to you, so there are functionally only four seats with accessible plugs). The quiet reading room only has one desk, and I'm not sure if there are plugs. Ambiance: In the last few years, they've installed greige laminate flooring and movable office tables with wheeled plastic chairs. The vibe has shifted from "cozy library" to "office space/cafeteria". Good things: There is a free parking lot with no time limit directly behind the library. There are only about 8-10 spots but we didn't have any issues getting a spot midday on a weekday. Bathroom is clean. There was a large community space in the basement that probably has good events. There are interesting/useful items you can check out like board games, sewing machines, etc. There's also a 3D printer.

I've only explored the children's section which is where I spend most of my time because of my toddler. They had clean family bathrooms. There was a book case shaped like a train and a little play train station. There was a baby section for them to crawl in; toys, play kitchen, and train table. I loved that there were little reading nooks built into the walls. In front of the librarian desk, there's a huge play tree where kids can go in it. On the side, a big craft room with blocks and magnetic tiles. They had a fish tank, a tank with worms/isopods, computers, and so much stimulation for the little ones. I'm sure they have great activities, events, and resources as with other libraries. The librarians were friendly; it was a busy Saturday afternoon because it was kind of rainy out. The little kids were being rowdy at one point and the librarian shushed them in a stern but friendly way. All of us parents were trying our best, but things got out of hand when you mix a bunch of little kids together lol. Overall, I wish this library was closer to me, I would be there often!

She went above and beyond the call of duty in helping me to find exactly what I needed and and did it in a cheerful and friendly way. She tracked down the book I wanted, and then scanned maps within it. She next found an additional resource I was unaware of, and made photocopies of its content. Lots of interesting nooks and crannies to explore, local historic artifacts, paintings, etc. Also, nice selection of DVD's to borrow, and fun activities for babies and toddlers during the week. If you are local, this is a great place to stop during a walk up Main St. or to bring some books or laptop for study.
