Decided to give this place a try today. The breakfast is great and plentiful. The service people were as nice as could be. On the other hand, it took a half hour to get served breakfast when the place was only half filled. Then, there was nearly no heat to the point that coffee was more than an eye opener and become an absolute survival item. read more

There is something special about North Star Diner & Shanghai Room. Perhaps it's the 24/7 eatery, serving classic breakfast entrees or the dim-lit bar with cocktails and boozy milkshakes. But I'm a fan. I met my friends here for dinner as they love North Star Diner and are lucky enough to live walking distance from this place. After coming here for a breakfast dinner I can see why they and many others frequent the spot. I like the casual vibes of its space theme in the diner and the more intimate Shanghai Room next door. Staff were also super friendly here. For dinner I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak plate because you can get this bad boy at all hours of the day, including dinner time! I don't often eat breakfast food, but the chicken fried steak was di-vine. The meat was tenderized, so as to easily cut it, with just a butter knife, and I really enjoyed the country gravy smothered on top, with a bed of hashbrowns underneath the steak. I also ordered my eggs sunny side up, which made my meal all the more yummy, with its runny yolk, creating its own sauce. Come for the breakfast food, stay for the drinks and atmosphere. Located in Greenwood, North Star Diner & Shanghai Room is truly a treat and one that all Seattleites must check out, especially at night. Oh my what how wonderful breakfast restaurant. Seven of us were headed to the zoo and found a diner very close to the zoo on Greenwood. We sat on their back patio on a beautiful late June day. I ordered the chilaquiles and the rest of the family ordered other breakfast items. My niece ordered a breakfast chimichanga looked fantastic. My breakfast was unbelievably delicious. The waiter and all the staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. Amazing options for a place that is open 24 hours! I wasn't aware there was any place offering decent food at all hours of the day. Thanks to the late Anthony Bourdain for visiting in the Seattle episode and bringing this place to my attention. My friend and I were super hungry after seeing Little Shop of Horrors at Shoreline College and were looking for some comfort food. North Star Diner truly has something for everyone. Our server was really sweet and attentive, making sure to answer all of our questions before taking our orders. I ordered a salad with the dressing on the side and it came slathered in dressing - hungry and not wanting to be a complainer I suffered through the meal. When I told the server at the end of the meal he asked why I didn't say anything right away - I explained not wanting to waste perfectly good lettuce and that it was okay. My only suggestion is that the chef put less dressing on salads as one can always add dressing later but nothing can be done with an overdressed salad. I also pointed out that the salad should have come with avocado and it had none. He apologized and brought out half an avocado in slices so I could enjoy the last bit of the meal with them. I'm guessing the cook that evening was not familiar with the menu descriptions as it was also supposed to have tortilla strips but actually had wonton strips (totally different texture/flavor than what I was expecting for this salad). All of this is to say it wasn't the fault of the server and he was lovely through and through. The kitchen could probably use some closer attention to detail later in the evenings, but I am still looking forward to visiting in the future to try out other menu items! read more

I'm giving five stars for the pancakes alone! I got Huevos Rancheros and my brunch eating partner got Chilaquiles and both were great and spicy! We split an order of pancakes and I would say they were great, came out warm so we could get some butter on them melted -- very important. I usually add a little hot sauce to my brunch dishes in general but it was not needed which was refreshing. Went for the first time yesterday and so happy I did. Great food, music and service. I had the Turkey Club sandwich which was the best Club I've had in quite some time. The quality and prep of the ingredients is what made it shine- fresh, ripe tomatoes, crispy lettuce, lean and real (not pressed) turkey, and toasted sourdough (seemed homemade). Popped in here because we were hungry and it was raining ... what luck! We had an amazing meal in a super cool spot. There was a wait to get in, but they were very organized about it and there was space indoors and an awning outside to keep us dry. When we got to the head of the ljne, we could see the staff carefully cleaning everything down before seating us, which is crucial in these COVID times. The vibe inside is, uh, I guess you call it galactic Shanghai? Astro-eclectic? Who knows. There's a wall of framed photos of astronauts, but most of the decor is 1960's Chinese restaurant... it's eclectic, and somehow, it works. At a minimum, it's entertaining. The food, though, is what totally makes a place, right? I ordered a Diet Coke, and received a GIANT cup of it, please and thank you for not refilling endlessly during my meal. And what a meal! I ordered a crispy chicken sandwich that was perfectly cooked, with a crunchy coated cutlet that was twice the size (at least) of the bun it came on. The fries were good, the pickle on the side was good, and the coleslaw side was perfect - crunchy and not drowning in Mayo. It was all too much for mere mortal appetites to finish, but the leftovers made a nice breakfast the next day. I wish I lived closer because I'd eat here all the time! read more

I am not at all familiar with the Seattle area- I lived in Washington state for six months back in 2012 while working at Mount Rainier, but have only visited the state's largest city a handful of times for very brief periods. And during those visits, I mainly stuck to the Downtown and Capitol Hill neighborhoods. What a shame that I discover that the city of Seattle has much, much more to offer and that I just realized it. I mean, I knew that being a big city it would offer a lot, but even having places like North Star is a testament to the variety and quality offered that smaller cities can't compete with (I know I shouldn't talk about my home negatively, but I'm specifically looking at Portland.) When my friend and I arrived at around 1pm, we had a short wait but the gentlemen at the host desk was very friendly and notified us immediately when the booth was available. We were greeted and asked about beverages almost immediately- we both ordered coffee with oatmilk, and the drip coffee was surprisingly delicious. I know they offer beverages outside of your typical restaurant/brunch type selection, but I was still surprised that they put that much attention into one of the cheapest things on the menu. I ordered the challah french bread while my friend ordered a stack of pancakes. The prices were very reasonable- mine was $12 and the portions were very generous. It is surprisingly hard to find challah on the west coast, so I was very pleased. My friend enjoyed their meal too- from what I saw, the pancakes were large and fluffy, cooked to perfection. Our waiter was very attentive, friendly and conversative without being intrusive. A heads up- there is a service charge (I can't recall what it was, but it wasn't much) like at some restaurants in the Seattle area. Maybe that is why the service was so good compared to many places I go to in Portland- there is more incentive and the employees are treated better/compensated fairer. I don't know- but all I know is that I greatly enjoyed my experience at North Star and will definitely look forward to visiting again! read more

We came here last Friday around 6 for a friend's low key birthday get together. For a place featured on an Anthony Bourdain show, I thought this place would have been PACKED on a Friday evening. We were pleasantly sirprised when we had ample seating and things weren't too loud. We easily found seating for around 12 people in the lounge. It is really interesting to have this dark red, sultry lounge just opposite their diner. It's definitely a cool vibe inside with a 360 bar in the center. Best thing is that happy hour goes till 7 pm and has great deals on cocktails, beer, wine and food. Service was slow (lack of enough bartenders that evening) and they sometimes forgot our orders but they were super gracious about getting it made or fixed right away. Cocktails are made very well. They look great and taste great. Some are too sweet for me but others were just right. You can taste fresh fruit juices. Happy hour prices are only $6 a cocktail vs $9-$12 normally. They even do tiki style drinks like their version of a singapore sling. I particularly liked their signature drink, the Northstar. The lazy susan drink ( 8 random shots on a giant lazy susan turn table for around $45) was cool to see but shots were not strong. The food was pretty good. I got the HH fried buffalo cauliflower and the french toast sticks. Soooo good. Freat flavor and so crisp. Karaoke was fun after but the DJ could have done the audio better. Ive gone here a few times with my friend when I visit her since this is her favorite spot to hang out. It's pretty divey with super, quirky, weird decoration. I dont know how to explain it, but it is my type of place haha. Especially love the lanterns on the ceiling. Drinks are always really strong and food is good. I've had the burger and surprised I haven't been here for breakfast. I've been here on week nights and on weekends. They do get really busy at certain times and I know they host karaoke/other fun nights. Last time we were here eating dinner, people started slowly showing up and it got busy rather quick. Went in to North star for a quick bite. It looked wierd and quirky. The decor is definitely quirky, but the menu is definitely standard diner fare. I opted for the chicken strip lunch - two chicken strips sitting on top of a mound of fries with a side of cole slaw (which, honestly, might have been for my wifes meal). I didn't like the chicken strips. They were obviously cooked at too low a temperature so they ended up very greasy both in taste and look. The breading (not batter) slipped off easily. The fries were most satisfying, however, and my wifes chicken sandwich (which was HUGE) was good for another days meal. Service - top notch. Been coming here for about 10 years, about once a month or so. First the service - Travis and Jon both are really attentive rad people with motivation to see you have a good experience, Never had a problem with the service when it's completely full or when it's empty. The food is really good, hearty and it's a full plate of the best diner food in the city. I personally love the french toast and pancakes, the recipes are delicious and the food is out in front of you in less than 20 minutes. With all the hype, I really expected better food. It was Fathers Day and this was my brother's choice! He is a pretty terrific dad and spectacular grandad, so this day he gets what he wants. To start out being positive, the staff is delightful and they do a great job of being friendly while keeping the space clean and inviting all day long (and night too, I hear). The character of this place is unique. The decor has something for everyone. (lol) Classic diner furnishings complete with booths and a counter at which you can dine. The menus are those massive plastic menus that seem to always have something stuck to them but ours were sparkling clean. Looking across the dining area the first thing I noticed was a wall FULL of portraits of our astronauts. ( I would have liked a closer look at these but I feared the booth diners might think I was being intrusive ;) A clockwise glance took me into space with a full wall mural featuring a galaxy. A glance upwards is a tray ceiling that definitely has an Asian theme. Some might say the decor lacks continuity, but I prefer to think of it as a time capsule, offering a shout-out to the establishment's history. ;) Fish n chips, if it is on the menu, I am going to order it. Besides, I am in Seattle, right? They should have good fish here , was my thought. The first bite was perfect. Crispy on the outside. On the inside there was a beautiful chunk of cod done to perfection. I was tickled. The fries were gorgeous. Perfect cut and perfect doneness for me. The potatoes are cut with skins on and the fries were delivered while pleasantly crisp. Then not so good! As the fresh hot food cooled, both the fish and the fries turned totally soggy right before my eyes. ick!!! I am not sure why this happened, I am supposing the wrong frying oil? not fresh frying oil? but whatever the reason, it was a buzz kill. What remained outstanding was the coleslaw. Excellent coleslaw! I am pretty fussy about my coleslaw so this is a big endorsement. So close to being good...but not there. Went on a Saturday morning and bypassed the people waiting for tables to sit at the bar. The food took a really long time (but came out in order from when other people ordered). The shrimp and grits were good, but the grits had sat just a little too long where they formed into a polenta blob. Still really tasty but not quite the right texture. They were, however, really tasty and paired well with the shrimp/sausage. The blueberry Pancake was fine, nothing special. The breakfast burrito was promising, but it was so incredibly oily. The tortilla was literally shining and was gross to pick up. We would come back, because it seemed like it was more of an execution issue, instead of flavor. read more

It's late and it's been 14 hours since breakfast from Starbucks. Even a doughnut, handful of chocolate truffles, and vending machine beef jerky at work have long exhausted their caloric properties. Stupidly didn't bring lunch, and it was pointless to have dunch/linner. Returning from a show up at Tulalip, stomach was demanding food. Big food of epic proportions. Dinner options were getting limited coming up on 11pm. Didn't want to deal with Capitol Hill or International District parking. Didn't want Denny's, Beth's, Dick's, 13 Coins, or some random drive-through. Decided it was time to go check out North Star Diner in Seattle's Greenwood neighborhood. (Thanks to fellow Yelper, Chris H!) The adjacent Shanghai Room looked fascinating, but I'm here for food I can see (1/27/17). Headed left into the diner and at this time of night, seated myself at a window table. This proved entertaining with sidewalk life and cruisers along Greenwood Ave. Ample tables and counter seating are available. Nice cross section of wait staff and patrons. Clearly there are regulars at North Star. Vast menu which was daunting for this first ever visit. Wait person was patient as I contemplated wanted to stuff my face with at least four different choices. Decided on the Chicken Fried Steak Breakfast ($13.99, there's also a dinner option) which included hash browns, three eggs, and an orange wedge. Yes, huge, ginormous portions, fit for someone who did something strenuous like hike the Pacific Coast Trail. Yet perfect for a sleep deprived, hangry bitch with a raging headache on a late Friday night. Long term sustenance since it's Sat AM at a car dealership and still full as I write this Yelp post. I devoured it except for two bites of the chicken fried steak (think Monty Python reference to one thin mint). Tasty CFS, over easy eggs perfectly done, crispy exterior/soft interior hash browns. Only nit picky neg was tepid water and the bottom of my glass dribbled and left milk rings on the table, sopped it up with a napkin from my jacket. I intend to return and checkout other menu options. Good to know there's a great late night option in North Seattle/Greenwood with substance and personality. I have never had a bad meal here ever. however, they desperately need to streamline their service. our 20 minute wait turned into 50 minutes even though there was 5+ open tables. there is just not enough people wearing too many hats and they need one person bussing and one person seating/hosting. it really takes away from the friendly folks who work there and also the great food. read more

The service was great and our server was so nice and quick to help us despite being busy with all the other people in the restaurant. The food was absolutely incredible as well. I got the big dipper which would usually be a lot of food for me but it was so good that I finished it all in one sitting. If you're looking for great food and big portions all at a fair price this is the place to go. Everyone in my party left incredibly satisfied with their meal and even more so in their restaurant choice. I've been going to this place for years, usually for breakfast but sometimes for lunch. If you arrive during the "families with young kids hours" of 8:00-9:30am for breakfast, you won't have to wait for a table. I can't speak to later brunch times, but for people with young kids who don't want to wait? You have found your spot, and the food is delicious! My kids always get the pancake, which is $5 and comes with sprinkles, along with a side of bacon. For the adults, try the veggie hash, chilaquiles, or if they have a benedict special, those are always good. And if you're there for lunch, the cauliflower buffalo "wings" are amazing! I realized that in the years I've been coming here with my fiancé, we never wrote a review. North Star is one of the most chill places you will dine at. It's a great local spot and if you're old enough, the Shanghai room is where it's at. It's strange, lighthearted and overall a good time. Their genuine no F's given attitude is great, and Travis the manager knows just how amazing of an establishment he has. We tend to avoid the karaoke nights, but we enjoy stopping in to see Salem and especially Erin. However, I'm sure you want to know what to order. I love getting Wishful Thinking, which is my favorite cocktail. My fiancé loves to enjoy the Mountain Dew sour (if they have it, so sorry ahead of time). For food. The Rueben. It's just great, and the best in seattle (I'm biased). However, if that's not your thing, we've got you fam. My fiancé loves the crispiest chicken sandwich, and it's a phenomenal wrap. The stadium fries are bountiful and worth it (don't forget the ranch!). If you go in for brunch and don't get a Bloody Mary, then what's the point. Especially since their breakfast is served all day. For openers, the service was fantastic and everyone was on point, efficient while still being warm & friendly. Being Sunday around Noon, there was a small wait but there were places at the counter for immediate seating, so I took that option. The food was better too. The sausage was a nice patty and quite tasty. Hash browns were hot, crispy and not greasy. Even the drip coffee was great. Apparently it's roasted by Vashon Island Coffee. One of my dining companions at the counter ordered a Bloody Mary and it looked great and she loved it. Everything coming out of the kitchen looked great.
