Oh how I wished I lived in a city with a cool market, aka Food Hall. This market in Baltimore (near the Johns Hopkins Hospital) reminded me of some of the markets I've been to in LA, Philadelphia, Cleveland and New Orleans. It's rows and rows of food you can order an eat, food you can take home and cook yourself, and I'm sure some stuff I'm missing. If I lived in the area (which I would totally not do), I'd make this a regular stop for sure. Just skip Shore Seafood which was a disappointment. There are plenty of other vendors! read more

I lovedddd my entire experience at Monument (or NE, whichever side you're from lol). I entered on a Tuesday morning for some breakfast and wound up leaving with not only breakfast, but a chicken box, some chittlings for mother, and books not only for myself but for a gift that I needed for the following day. One could say that the area is this or the people are that, but Monument is really a 1-stop shop. I wish I lived closer to experience the fresh produce more often! (I'm going to say it too - Baltimore chicken's box is better than DC's too.....) But take a trip to NE one day! The designated parking lot for sure helps too. read more

I have been working at Hopkins for over a year and had noticed the market, but had not ventured out to explore it as it seems possibly unsafe. However I was pleasantly surprised to find a vi rant market with many options; it reminded me of a different country. The market has many options; I only tried the wrap place which has more than just wraps. I tried their Chinese food which was delicious! Some of the spots are vacant, but most seem in use and busy! The place could be cleaner, brighter, more updated and if that's the case, probably more people from Hopkins would go. Prices were excellent, but didn't look around much. read more

I grew up going to this market with my dad. It's the same - great stalls and owners, fresh fruit and vegetables and produce. Some of the stalls are my favorite. All of them provide quality service and the price is right for what you purchase. I would definitely recommend visiting if you haven't been. read more

It's always a joy to have so many choices for lunch. Be prepared to hunt for street parking and chance getting a ticket or try to park on the lot but remember to pay. Also be prepared to walk pat people selling things on the exterior and smelling weed as u walk to get into the market. Once inside you have lots to choose from , fresh veggies and fish to buy as well as have cooked as u wait .... Chicken ready to go ... Korean food ... multiple delis ... polish sausage .... We got smoothies and he got chicken livers for grandma!!. This space had a lot of options be it. Lunch,breakfast, dinner, Fresh foods (fish etc) , you can even grab ice cream for the kids and a shirt or jewelry or a book!!.. like you can't go wrong it's just a lot of people but I love it's very spacious to walk through without elbow to elbow!!.. The customer service was cool the Lady at Smoothie Place was so nice and patient! don't get a large smoothie it's huge asssf!! bigger than an average large!! .. you have to order by number the number 11 was surprisingly really good with the strawberries pineapple mango and banana!! Great for lunch, as well as grocery shopping. Some highlights: Fried chicken: Although Ronnie's All-Day Lunch and Monument Fried Chicken are both good, Ronnie's is my personal favorite. It seems like the locals agree, since the lines at Ronnie's around lunchtime tend to be the longest. Service is quick and efficient though, so you'll never be left waiting for very long. Korean food: Both stands are very good, very reasonably priced ($8 for a pound of food!), and sell different things. Soho Teriyaki has gimbap, japchae, freshly grilled chicken thigh meat, and spicy pork belly. They also have a variety of vegetables, spicy tofu, and often kelp salad as well. OK Oriental Food sells spicy chicken, fried fish, grilled mackerel, and bulgogi. The homemade lemonade is also very good. Grocery: Monument Produce A great farm stand with super fresh vegetables, herbs, fruits, eggs, and poultry, including duck, goose, and rabbit. I do pretty much all of my grocery shopping here nowadays. Not all of the food sold here is local, but the quality of the food that is local is very high. Best things about this place are the fresh greens (mustard, cress, spinach, smooth and curly kale), which come in daily, and the poultry, which is very fresh. The meat here is way fresher than at Safeway, FYI...I've gotten stinky chicken at Safeway a few times but it's always pretty fresh here (and cheap, as well). Fellner's Meats High quality cuts of fresh red meat, lots of smoked things, deli meats, and variety cuts (calves' liver, pork jowls, pig tails, etc.). I often buy fresh sausages here. They also sell both skin-on pork belly in large ~5 lb slabs, and skin-off pork belly in smaller 1-2 lb packages. This is a very popular stand, so be aware that you may have to wait in line if you come during peak hours on the weekend. Fish Markets: There are two fish markets: Shore's Seafood, and Jackpot Seafood. Both sell a variety of whole and filleted fresh fish and shellfish. Shore's has more local species that are from the Chesapeake Bay (rockfish, red snapper, butterfish, porgies, white perch, shad, mackerel, oysters), whereas Jackpot Seafood has delicious species from further afield (flounder, pompano). Shore's deserves special kudos for their delicious fried seafood: the crunchy, perfectly spiced breading reminds me of Popeyes. I especially love the fried shrimp and catfish nuggets, as well as the option to choose a fish for them to fry for you. I recommend the rockfish if you want fried fillets. If you are accustomed to eating smaller whole fish, the porgies, white perch, or butterfish are also great. Other: Smoothie Place Very good fresh smoothies, and a huge selection of flavors and fruits. I got something with strawberry and banana in it--it was really tasty. Fresh Roast Marketplace Their turkey noodle soup is really good and is made from scratch. (You can often see the turkey they carve the meat off of on the side counter.) Jamie's Wraps Misleadingly named since they also sell Chinese food now, though I've never tried their wraps or tacos. They have nice "Asian"-inspired chicken wings, and the Singapore noodles here are also a highlight. This is the only Chinese food stand I'd bother going to, personally. Rose's Bakery A great, no-frills bakery that specializes in sweets and pastries. I love their strawberry shortcake in a jar, as well as the strawberry crunch cake jar. The German chocolate cake is very moist and delicious, and the pecan pie is also very good. Check their Facebook or Instagram for their custom cakes: they run the gamut from beautiful to hilarious :) Fresh mozzarella, Italian relishes If you like fresh mozzarella (the nice kind that comes in a loaf in water, not the low-moisture dry shredded kind), many of the sandwich stands sell loaves of BelGioioso Mozzarella. I believe Rex's Deli and JAWA Market both have it. Belly Busters Deli carries some Italian-style relishes (giardiniera, peperoncini, pickled banana peppers). Local bread Many of the sandwich stands also carry sliced bread and potato bread from H & S Bakery in Fells Point, though to my knowledge no stand sells crusty bread. Belly Busters has a perfect blend of ice, real fruit, and flavor. If you're ever on the Eastside or near the Northeast market it worth stopping in. It is my favorite of the municipal markets. For its size it is the best bang for you buck and taste buds. I used to go here way too often while a student at JHU and working at the hospital. I've gone back many times and my favorites are still there and some new things have cropped up. As a chicken loving fool, I can say Monument Fried chicken is awesome meaty fried chicken. Get it with barbeque and hot sauce for a pungent hot taste of goodness, either just on the chicken or all over if you get the fries platter (so cheap). Really opens up your nostrils. I've wondered if all the fried chicken is pretty much the same at the Market but I haven't found out because I always go back here. For excellent "asian" wings go to the place in between the fruit stand and lemonade (sorry forgot the name), but they also have tacos. The sauce has a hint of soy sauce and ..something but when I first had Bonchon I was not that impressed because it just reminded me of these wings (although they are not double fried). The breakfast place, (Ronny's I believe) makes great greasy breakfast sandwiches. The newest discovery for me was a dessert place that has bingsoo! Or Korean shaved ice! I'm sure most places here rock if you are into the greasy spoon. Just pick one out, it won't break the bank. For those scared of dirtiness maybe you should avoid, but if you want to try some local good Baltimore food, come! Most if not all are cash only. Yes, it's dirty, yes it's not really worth going to unless you happen to be at Hopkins, yes, even the vegetarian options have probably been smothered in bacon fat, but who cares? It's cheap, it's tasty and it's interesting. I definitely recommend the Korean/Japanese(ish) place in the back. They have that Korean maki stuff for like $1.50 a pound. This is THE place to have lunch if you work on this side of town. It's full of local vendors, all competing for your lunch money so the prices are great. This place is right by my house. I was trying some of it out. Had an AMAZING hot dog yesterday (yeah I was starving) and some weird asian/soul food today. It tasted pretty good. For about $9 I had enough food for an army. I bought a cookie too. The lady thought I was nuts just buying one, but I had five pounds of asiansoulfood in my other hand! Plenty of food vendors. It's a good size and for the most part is clean but I feel like it lacks variety or anything exciting. What you'll find are mostly things fried, in sandwich form, or Chinese. I would run out of fingers trying to count all the fried chickens stalls. If you've been to Reading market in Philadelphia then this place will disappoint you. I remember the first time I moved to Bmore, I asked, why would I ever go to one of the "Bmore markets" when I could just go to Whole Foods or Trader Joe's or Wegmans? Well, because 1. the markets are an odd but fascinating mostly-Korean-owned-run-by-Hispanics-cater-African-American-population entity and 2. they have delicious and CHEAP a** Korean food, sandwiches, BBQ, candy by the pound, and 3. GROCERIES! Most people just think of this place as a lunch option for Hopkins folks, but you can go here on weekends and get your produce and fish. Let me preface this review with some background information. I am from North Carolina, not from Baltimore. I don't like most of the city streets in Baltimore... no grass or trees... what's a rowhouse? But I have to admit I have developed a thing for this place. Ssssssshhhhhhhhh.... don't tell! The area that it's located in looks straight like scenes from "The Wire"... which was the first time I saw a rowhouse. (We don't have those in NC btw). The place is nothing visually to brag about... I just want to run-in and get my food and go. Anywho, this is really a market. Fresh fish (prepared fish also), various cuts of meat (some that I have never heard of!) and deli meats, fresh vegetables and fruits, prepared foods such as salads, pizza, subs, fried chicken (I had a chicken box here for the first time....never heard of that until moving up here!), smoothies, chinese/korean/asians foods, desserts, and even clothing like t-shirts, hats and accessories. It's all over the board... I will point out they have a smoothie place that makes THE BEST smoothies. I'm sure they are NOT healthy, and they are super sweet, but my boyfriend got me hooked on them. I am an advocate for healthy smoothies because they taste just as good, but I promise you that they put crack in these smoothies because I MUST have one every time we go here. Oh and I'm also hooked on the breakfast deli-style sandwiches that are available early mornings... you really could make these at home, but they are cheap and SMASHable! haha Definitely go check it out one day... its a market, its cheap and the economy is bad, and "we all gotta eat"! This day I didn't get anything for the market, but I went with a friend because its in brief walking distance from our job. This is very convenient for those days that you want to go to a place with various options. I can admit the place can be very scary to a newbie in the city but there are some hidden yummy gems and also those you should stand clear of. Plenty of meter street parking. Check it out for yourself. Suggestion: unless you for the neighborhood or familiar with Baltimore city I don't suggest going at night or after business hours. This is a great lunch option for Hopkins employees due to the proximity and the more affordable places than the cafeteria or balducci (read: rip off). There Are about 15 stalls and have something for everyone. There is a sandwich place called Jawa which has very good and affordable sandwiches. Thy also have hot paninis. We have loved the turkey and chicken sandwiches from there. The shrimp salad is written up in the city paper And although I am not a shrimp person many friends have said it is delicious. There is a place I think called Jamie's wraps that has Mexican and Chinese food. Sounds sketchy I know. But both are quite good and again well priced. I love the chicken or beef "wraps" aka burrito . the hit sauce can be hot ! Although I am a wimp ! There is another place that has Peruvian chicken with 2 aides for like 5 bucks and is a huge portion. Also went to reyes I think was the name for the slow roasted beef. Definitely a real Baltimore experience. The Korean place at the back is nice...you can get food by the pound. I didn't ask if things were vegetarian, because I just wanted to eat it and I didn't want to know. They had some spinach, bok choy, kimchi, and seaweed salad, as well as a bunch of rice and hot meat dishes. They also had sushi but none of it appeared to be vegetarian. It was all pretty good but I felt like I had a lunch of just panchan (side dishes) and so I was still a little hungry. The kimchi was especially good and tasted like it might have been homemade. Just want to make sure everyone knows -- this market is closed on Sunday. I found some information online that said the NE Market was open on Sundays. I visited on Sunday Jan 9 2011 and it was closed with a permanent-looking sign outside saying they are closed on Sundays. Great gem of Baltimore! If you're looking for a place to eat look no further! Located near Johns Hopkins, there is only street parking but lots of public transit nearby. It was renovated in the past five years or so, so the look is a lot cleaner than the past. Always packed with people and the aisles can be quite small. As soon as you walk in you are flooded with a million places to eat. Anything you want they have. You can also get fresh meats, fruits, and veggies for your dinner! Some little shops are there as well, selling everything from phones to fancy hats. My favorite place to eat is the "Ok Oriental." Although my food was cold this time around, the flavor of the chicken and green beans is awesome. Before they scooped your food for you but now it's changed to "pay by the pound." Wish I saved room for the fresh pretzels! Cinnamon sugar on top is the best! Yummy! read more

They usually have a variety of 6 stir fries/stews/noodle dishes that rotate during the week (e.g. sweet and sour chicken, lo mein, chap chae, squid), but my go to is definitely the chicken bulgogi (savory, marinated -- flavors of soy, sugar, celery seed -- and grilled) on white rice. You get a main and 2 veg sides: dry fried green beans, bean sprouts, cabbage kim chee, sometimes pickled carrots or cucumbers, blanched broccoli with sesame. It's a nice box of food for ~$6.50. Tried the stall called OK oriental food. Food wasn't ready for the lunch crowd at 11, had to wait 20 mins but I didn't mind. I had the lo mein, kimchi, and chicken bulgogi platter for $7.50. It's SOOO much food!! The lady in charge takes care in her food, you can tell she has a lot of pride in her work. However, her customer service could be improved as she was ignoring people who wanted to order because she was still busy prepping. The food I had was really good. I love kimchi so that's nice. I liked that the noodles are yummy but doesn't leave that gross msg aftertaste that other Chinese takeout places have when you eat their noodles or fried rice. So the lo mein was a definite plus. I think I just wish the chicken bulgogi maybe had some extra sauce, but it was really yummy too. I would go again to this place, but at a later time for a shorter wait. read more

This place is the bomb if you work anywhere near the medical campus. It's really wonderful and REAL food with HUGE portions. I can tell you that the Korean food stall is DELICIOUS. I went once and I had a very nice time and the rotisserie and fry chicken were very good. It is an odd combination of wigs, electro domestics and food. It seems to me that the market is transitioning towards a more diverse and modern market. Love it, but once I think is good for me for the time being ...no Strong urge to return.. I love this place. I have been coming here for many years, and everyone is so friendly and nice to me. It is by far my favorite city market, not just because I can walk there from Butcher's Hill, but because it is cheap and good! You will find your own favorite spots, but I love the deli's near the pizza place (best tropical shrimp salad at one, best turkey club at the other). Henderson's vegetable/fruit stand, powerhouse from my favorite Korean dude in the middle aisle, meats from Fellner..etc Good Asian food. Nice Seafood spot. etc etc. And the West Indian across the street is excellent as well! The owner is so nice. Support your East Baltimore vendors who are working 6 days a week, way too many hours. They have a cheap metered parking lot adjacent, and there is free street parking on Collington. Yes, the neighborhood isn't rich and manicured, but it is safe and full of love. read more
