We had been getting chimneys cleaned and other service from them for a long time, and they always were responsive and reliable. Most recently, a guy came with a drone and spent most of his time taking drone pictures of our chimney, and then gave us a real scare story about all the work we needed, at tens of thousands of dollars. We then went up onto the roof and took a close look. The flashing and caulking he said needed redoing was in perfect shape. The cement caps on the chimneys were solid and not crumbling as he claimed. The pointing was still solid after the most recent re-pointing. If he thought things were so bad from the drone pictures, he should have gone up on the roof himself to double check. The real problem though is that now we can't take his word for anything about the whole fireplace system, so we will need to go elsewhere in the future. read more

I spent years researching inserts and grills, and spent time with Matchless Stove & Chimney, Best Fire Hearth & Patio, and Northeastern Fireplace & Design. Here's what I found. The sales guy at Best Fire tried to rip me off to the tune of $1,500, so a decision was quickly made to never go there again, and it was narrowed down to Northeastern vs Matchless. I would compare it as Mercedes vs Subaru. If you have an extra couple thousand to burn, go with Matchless, you will not be disappointed. If you are cost conscious, go with Northeastern, you will not be disappointed. I ended up buying my grill from Matchless and both of my inserts from Northeastern. read more

I hired these guys to service my one year old wood stove - they did the sweep from inside the stove - sweeping up to the top of the chimney pipe - I learned from Matchless Stove and Chimney that this is not the preferred way to sweep because the creosol builds near the chimney pipe (at the top) so that the best way to sweep is to start at the top... They had a very skimpy sweeper on a reel that they turned to snake it up the pipe - I would guess about 2 in or less or wire bristles ( not like what you see on all of the instructional videos where the brush is probably 8 inches of wire bristles) they went up the chimney once/ that was the extent of the cleaning. My bad I should have researched the proper way to sweep a wood stove chimney - there are tons of videos on how to do it and all of the videos are consistent with what matchless said. I gave them one star only because there was no option for a 'no star' take a look at the picture of what they did to my $3000 Vermont Castings Stove that is less than a year old - bought it last fall. When I called them about it the only thing they were interested in was blaming me, putting me on hold in mid sentence, and said he was the owner / named Joe... I questioned rather this was the truth as I found it hard to believe that the owner would treat customers this way. I explained that I was the only person home, that other than them no one had gone near the stove. That there was no leak on the ceiling - my house isn't even eight years old - they were not interested in anything I had to say. I even explained that under the thermometer there was no rust and to look at the spray pattern - that the guy was using a sprayer... They just didn't care. Had they said they were sorry that something must have gone wrong and they would be right over to repair etc I would have been fine with that - mistakes happen - But they instantly started blaming me for the rust. Took a condescending tone, said things like 'look wood stoves rust - these things happen" etc. They offered to mail me a tube of polish so that 'I' could fix the problem. Matchless said it would need to have the rust removed and to be to be re- painted with high temperature paint. They (the guys they sent to do the service were using a spray to clean the glass and the stove and I can only guess that it had a corrosive chemical in it - it ate the finish right off the stove causing rust to form. Now I'm out 180 dollars and I still need to hire someone to come in to sweep the chimney ( the right way) and to repair the damage that these guys refuse to take ownership of. Very disappointed in my most recent experience. I scheduled a FREE ESTIMATE for some work on my gas insert and noted that when the Rep was walking up the driveway he was taking photos of my roof and chimney. He entered and immediately went into concerns he had about my chimney. Made comments that seemed unrelated to why he was called to my home. We discussed the work I was looking to get done and I was totally put off by the comments this Rep was making. "this unit is garbage, its so old and out dated" he started to list off at least 10 things that needed replacement and repair. Mind you I have had 2 other companies out to give estimates prior that did not take this approach with the me or the work. I felt pressured and was being pushed by a salesman who just wanted to up sell me. He then asked if he could take a quick look at the chimney , never once did he say inspect. He stated he wanted to make sure there was a liner for the gas exhaust. I agreed and he proceeded to go on the roof. He was up there maybe 10 mins. At this time I got my husband on speaker phone because I felt as a woman I was being snowed by this Rep. He rambled through a bunch of concerns and showed me photos of the chimney and started throwing repairs and pricing at us. At this time my husband told him thank you we will discuss it and get back to you if we decide to do the work. I hung up with my husband and then proceeded to walk the Rep to the door where he told me I owed him 151.20 for todays visit. What? this was a scheduled free estimate. He began to argue that he went up and inspected the chimney, I said you never told me this was a inspection, not did you tell me there was a charge. I ended up writing him a check to get him out of the house and stop this uncomfortable interaction. Later I wrote a letter to the company and stopped payment on my check. DO NOT even consider this business!!!TERRIBLE!!!! We went to purchase 3 separate propane stoves from this company... no follow up, no phone calls, when I tried to make contact the office manager was rude and acted like I was bothering her - too busy to answer questions after we went into the shop on 2 separate occasions getting a defined quote and had our future home chimney inspected - too busy to send report. Felt like they did not care about our business - or they were doing us a favor by picking up the phone. They clearly were too busy for us - $16100.00 in business. I purchased a gas fireplace from Northeastern and it was plagued with problems. I would call them to come fix it, they'd come and then it would break again. At one point, the interior fixtures melted. Why? Because they had installed a chimney cap rather than a direct vent cap for the gas stove. This resulted in the overheating. The repair people they sent were incompetent and when they finally couldn't figure out what was wrong, they stopped responding to my calls. I only learned of their egregious errors when I hired another stove company to come and look at it. They couldn't believe the sloppy care, the ignorance. The propane company capped the gas to the propane heating unit they installed because it was clearly unsafe and improperly installed. They didn't get permits or follow the manual instructions. I have been battling to get a refund. read more

We called Northeastern to come and clean a pellet stove and wood stove. The 2 young fellows who came clearly didn't no much about pellet stoves. We were running our pellet stove overnight and shut it down to cool before the service men came. Upon arrival they were pushing buttons on the mother board of the pellet stove with no idea what they were for. My husband had to explain it to them. They were not knowledgeable as to what needed to be cleaned and only partially cleaned the stove, not getting behind the plates that came out for cleaning purpose. They insisted we had not been running stove and after the partially cleaned stove it did not start. They ignored that fact and I asked them if they were going to leave and leave us with a stove that now is not starting. They now said I suddenly needed an ignater , which we had to order and get ourselves and for another 149 they would install it. My husband keep looking at the stove and informed the service man that the service man put the burning pot in backwards. When it was turned around the stove started. Guess we didn't need the parts and labor he said we needed. Also asked for a receipt for the over 500 dollars paid for this cleaning. Havent received as yet. Highly disappointed with them and would not use or recommend them to any one. read more

We recently purchased a wood stove insert from Northeastern Fireplace and had them install it in our living room. This was replacing a 2-year old gas stove purchased and installed from another company. In addition to installing our new Morso 5660 wood stove insert with an electric blower attachment, Billy and Frank from Northeastern moved the gas stove to our basement and installed it there. We began with an onsite assessment in late January 2015 and we received a written estimate for all the work via email the very next day. We had a second onsite visit and estimate, which took 3 weeks while Northeastern took only a few days. Northeastern's estimate was far more reasonable and they needed only 3-5 days to order the new insert, receive it and set up an install date once they received our 50% deposit. Billy and Frank were a pleasure to have around the house. On day 1, they had the new wood stove installed and a fire roaring in the fireplace. They were 90% finished with the re-installation of the Valor Gas Stove in the basement and came back as planned 2 days later to complete that process. The first day they were here from 9 am to 4 pm and on the second visit they were here less than 3 hours. They patched the wall in the living room where the wooden mantel had been and fired up the gas stove in the basement on that second day. Billy explained that our gas fireplace installation 2 years prior (different company) had been botched and that was why the Valor was unreliable - often the fire going out after a few hours due to the fact that the chimney insulation was incorrectly positioned and choked off the air from the intake liner. In addition, Frank will be back to repair our chimney which the prior company had not mentioned needed major work. We would trust Northeastern with our lives - they kept to their estimate and work schedules, were honest about all work performed and kept us informed as they did their work. Billy and Frank were fun and loved our dog, did great work and perfect finishing work as well and in general Northeastern are just a great bunch to work with. We highly recommend Joe Shearer (owner), Brenda (office manager) and Billy and Frank who make a great team and charge fair prices for their excellent work. We've had two other Hudson Valley fireplace and masonry companies here and we will continue to give our business to the best: Northeastern Fireplace. read more

I was shopping for a Mendota gas insert and installation, and also need some repairs to my chimney. They came to the house and provided a written quote for everything, and I decided to go with them. They would not honor the quote, the owner blamed a mistake on the person who came out to do the estimate. I paid the higher price and they came to do the installation but did not do the chimney repair that was agreed to. They did not return my calls to follow up on the repair. They did a minor repair inside which made my beautiful fireplace look ridiculous because the grout color is no where near the existing. All in all, a terrible experience and clearly the owner Joe could care less about customer satisfaction or customer service. I have never written a negative review about any product or service, but people need to know that they should look elsewhere when shopping for a stove or insert. read more
