Within hours it was suggested that she go into hospice and she agreed. This facility was warm, beautiful, extremely clean, updated and very accommodating for visitors... Murphy beds in the patient's rooms, separate showers for visitors, kitchen area, prayer room, and they even had high chairs and a play room for kids! My family and I were so impressed. We were amazed with the staff. Many staff members were of the younger generation and we were astounded at the devotion and compassion they gave. And although my mother was pretty much sedated the entire time, they treated her like a Queen. They were so delicate, and respectful. They answered all of our questions-- and we had lots of them! They were more than willing to explain the process and keep us informed of every step. My mother passed within 24 hours of entering the facility with her family surrounding her---Three weeks to the day of her diagnosis. It all happened so quickly. Their procedure of when someone passes was beautiful, gracious, and filled with love and respect for the family and the deceased. The entire staff took part in the departure procedure of the deceased. They took care of absolutely everything. It was the absolute best decision to bring our beloved mother here.

Deb, the intake nurse, was AWFUL. She treated my dad worse than a piece of furniture. She talked to him and knew that he was conscious. But she left him completely bare from the waist down, then went out to her car for a catheter, and left him there struggling to cover himself. Once she got him set up, she kept noting how agitated he was, and we told her that he was afraid, so she decided to sit a few feet from him and loudly and graphically described how she thought his death would progress. He heard everything. She estimated he'd last three days, but she absolutely broke him. He died about an hour after she left. I think she was the on call nurse, and she ignored our calls as we tried to get help to make things easier for my dad. Everyone from Heartland who came after he died was fantastic, but at that point, who cares?

It has taken me 6 months to write a fair review for them. I think after death, family members have…read morea tendency to blame someone or be angry, so I wanted to take some time. I can say that I am writing this with with no anger; however, a warning needs to be put out for future patients. To make a very long and difficult story short as possible . . . my father passed away under the care of Passages from a terminal illness. He was in significant amount of pain at the end stages of his life. He was receiving home care and the passages medical team (all nursing staff with one on-call doctor) were not able to properly manage my father's excruciating pain. At the time, we did not know if it was due to the medical incapacity of the staff or if my father's pain was just untreatable and difficult to manage. When my family introduced taking my father to a hospital (ER based) due to his pain, his primary nurse misinformed us. She stated he would have to go through "so many things like taking blood" and other life saving measures (i.e. ivy fluid) and he would be subjected to unnecessary procedures that he would not be able to tolerate. The nurse also inserted that if we take him to a hospital then Passages care would have to be terminated. After their nursing staff was unable to reach their on-call doctor for 2 days (their excuse was that it was due to a holiday weekend), we could not allow my father to endure another hour of pain. My father was taken to the nearby hospital. The ER staff were informed of his hospice care and took him into a wing for similar patients. They honored our wishes to have limited life saving measures and was able to insert the minimal ivy fluids to push through his much needed dosage of pain medication. Even the hospital staff were horrified to know how little pain medication he was receiving from Passages Hospice, as the doctor at the hospital needed to push through 10 times the strength of his pain medication for my father to be comfortable. During the last 2 days of his life, he did not moan in pain as his pain was being appropriately managed at the hospital. This was the clear indicator that showed my family that Passages Hospice did not follow through on their mission, which is to help the patient through the end stages of life with minimal pain and comfort. If you are looking for Hospice care, I recommend that you go with a Non-Profit service. We did not know that Passages was a For Profit company and assumed every hospice company is a Non-profit. This company is just not competent to take patients who are in significant amount of pain. They only have one doctor (on-call) and no back-up to their on-call doctor. The nursing staff did the best to their ability but they need more training. Perhaps they are discouraged from "losing" their patients to a hospital, which means less profit for them. All they needed to do was to be honest and tell us that they could not manage my father's condition and pain any longer. We would have taken him to the hospital earlier, so he did not have to endure so many days of pain and agony. I am only sorry that I picked Passages for my father's care. They have left our family with much feelings of regret and guilt. DO NOT GO TO PASSAGES FOR HOSPICE CARE OR YOU MAY EXPERIENCE THE SIMILAR . . . PAIN AND SUFFERING FOR YOUR LOVED ONE.

It was anything but that. On day one we were told a nurse would contact us the next day. 3 days passed before anyone contacted our family. There was no clear directions provided upon admission. Our mother was only in their care for 11 days, if you can call it care, as the only contact was admission and then 3 days later and the day of passing. Then we were told someone would come pick up the bed and other equipment the next day which never happened and required us to call the day after that to ask someone to come pick it up. I understand that doesn't seem like that big of a deal however when you are going through that emotional turmoil you don't want an additional reminder of the pain you already feel. But the final straw for me was the fact that our mother had been gone for 10 days and we had been waiting to bring her ashes home yet we couldn't because the Unity doctor had not signed her death certificate. As a family who is already mourning the passing of their loved one I find it quite unempathetic of someone who is supposed to be a professional with compassion for others, especially in these circumstances. I would never in my life recommend Unity to anyone who wants their loved ones to have compassionate care at the end of their days.

She was a complete professional who went above and beyond for my very sick mom. Management was mostly unprofessional, always trying to reduce visits or change nurses. Which caused alot of confusion for my mom. On a particular evening the night answering staff forgot to send a nurse out for an emergency and let me wait half the night, until I called a second time. When I spoke to management the next day about it, I was told I should of been more clear in what happened? Well my mother fell out of bed and was seriously confused, not sure how much more clear I could of been? Truthfully, there are very limited staff that really cares at this hospice, except a select few. They made us feel like we where more of a burden because my mom required more care, then what one might consider, more then an average patient. Which is a shame! My mom deserved more then this in her last days! I deserved more then this as a caregiver already watching my mom die before her eyes. Stephanie your in my heart forever. They were assigned a caregiver and at first things seemed ok. However after a few visits they started sending a different caregiver each time without notifying the family of the change. The new caregiver was given NO information about the client's condition or what kind of care they needed. The company gives them nothing but the address and what time to show up. Multiple times we asked that our family be notified when there is a change of caregivers so that we could explain to my aunt and uncle and ease any fears. We were told that this was not possible. Our attempt to keep an open line of communication was met with contempt by people like Amy Roesser. She was rude, uncaring, and confrontational. It is unreasonable and cruel to continually confuse an elderly couple with dementia. Anyone familiar with this condition knows how confusing and frightening changes can be for patients. It is also shameful to care so little about the patients you serve that caregivers are given no information before their arrival. After multiple attempts to remedy this situation we have no choice but to terminate service... which means paying the time remaining on our contract.
