Northern Tool is a neat place to find the niche tool or part that you can't find at the bigger box stores. It doesn't have the breadth of selection of Lowe's or home depot, but in has a much greater "depth" for what it does have. As an example, you won't find as many chainsaw options here as you would at Lowe's, but Northern Tool has the replacement filters, spark plugs, mufflers, etc for the equipment they do carry, which makes it an invaluable resource to the owners of things like Stihl chainsaws or blowers. It's pretty fun to just walk around and window shop. Workers are very nice and willing to answer any questions, and i think they totally understand the male desire to not ask for help ;) read more

Northern is a decent tool and outdoor equipment store, similar to a Tractor Supply, though their prices do tend to be a little higher than Lowe's or Home Depot on some things (like large tool boxes). Limited selection vs the others I mentioned, but it's a smaller store. If you can't find what you're looking for at the others, give Northern a try and maybe they will. They even carry some clothing and boots. Just don't expect to find things like lumber or construction materials here; it's not a hardware store. Sorry, we are minorities with minority sounding names. Anyways, I tell him to please dispose of the lawnmower as we will not be replacing or repairing the unit. He says he needs a signed statement and I I cut him off to let him know that won't be happening because Dad has ALS. He was immediately apologetic and remorseful about it, but you laughed at the sound of the man's name or the spelling of it. This place is full of ignorant employees. ------ I've never dealt with a business incapable of answering the phone. I came in here to buy a portable pressure washer that was advertised in a flyer. They seemed like cheap plastic. A saleswoman came up and said "Do you need help, or are you good". I told her I was looking at the washers, but before I could finish, she repeated - with emphasis - "Do you need help, or are you good". Well, I know what that means. She didn't really want to help, she was just required to ask, and I don't like the attitude, so I said with a smile "I'm good". She walks off and I walk out. I'd really like to thank her, because I went to Home Depot and found a brand-name power washer (Ryobi) that was even smaller, just as powerful, for less money, better made and great warranty. read more

This Charleston store is one of the biggest Northern Tools stores in the country and it is very neat, clean and organized. We easily found the item we were looking for and a clerk soon came by to ask if he could help us, a very friendly and courteous gentleman. He was very helpful and able to answer every question. Ordered a generator 'in the store' but cancelled it the same day due to finding the same product at a different vendor for $300 less. I was assured the transaction would be voided and my card not charged. That didn't happen. While I did receive a notification of the order being cancelled they could not/would not process the credit ($5K) because they needed the card number that matched the credit card transaction. I paid will Apple Pay which has it's own digital based number that is tied to my Amex card. The response I got at the store was it's out of their hands and they cannot do anything because we ordered it online, which I told the manager that I in fact ordered 'in the store'. He responded that it didn't matter, it was an online order and it went through a different department. He then kept us (myself and the Amex agent) on hold for over 10 minutes waiting for him to get us a contact at corporate. Absolutely horrible customer experience and will never consider Northern Tool for anything in the future. read more

Ordered a canopy tent online on 7/24, paid $150 for truck shipping (YRC) for a $350 item. I was reluctant due to high shipping cost but this was an item weighing around 190 lbs, so I agreed since they committed to deliver by 8/2. YRC freight keeps pushing out delivery date and have missed their commitment 4 times. it is now Friday 8/5 after 6pm which was their 4th committed delivery date, and yes, still have not received my item. Checked with Northern, they state delivery is "estimated" and subject to change. Fine, but why not state that when a customer is checking out and reviewing shipping charges and delivery date. When I reached out to shipper YRC via chat, seems like the left hand does not know what the right hand is doing: Thanks for choosing YRC Freight. A specialist will be with you shortly. My son went in to look for a few items in preparation for hurricane Irma and was appalled at the price gouging on generators and the pressure sales tactics being used to talk an older gentleman into the purchase. They also were telling customers that they could not return items purchased even if it was still in the box and unused!! They had $700 generators marked up to $1000! Come on people Lowes nor Home Depot do that And they have not raised their prices on their equipment!! My son walked out disgusted and went to Home Depot and got it much cheaper. I needed to replace a wheelbarrow tire. Finally found a guy who worked there, and waited for him to finish his social chat with a fellow worker. He seemed annoyed that I was even asking for help, and acted (maybe it wasn't an act) like he new nothing about the tires. The tires were all mixed up, not matching the price as posted. After three trips to the checkout clerk with three different tires, I found the one I needed. The "helpful" worker had told me they were out of that particular tire, then just walked away. Very few times am I impressed with the service at big box stores; however, Northern Tool in N Charleston is an outstanding example of customer service. First of all, I found out that this chain is privately owned, which would explain the personal touch still present in all aspects of customer relations. I neede a personal favor and the Store Manager, Ed Bouressa, was willing to accomodate my needs even though I was out of town having to coordinate matters over the phone. Ed and his staff are the best folks in town if you are in the market for quality tools and supples. Also, they have as parts and service department which is becoming almost impossible to find. I have a farm and own numerous tools and motorized equipment purchased from N Tool. For example, my pressure washer is 12 years old and still runs strong, just an occasional part from time to time which N Tool always can timely deliver.
