When you shop at Northern Tool + Equipment at Plano Tx, be careful and thoroughly check the merchandise before paying for it. The merchandise is defective or missing parts. I bought a Stihl KombiSystem online and the line head trimmer was missing. They opened several boxes and the same situation repeated.They didn't refund my money and made me buy the missing part separately. The excuse was that the manager was not in the store and for that reason, they couldn't make a decision. Who did we deal with ? read more

I haven't had any issues of them being rude or bad customer service since I already knew what I needed to buy when I got there. I'm impressed by how rude and terrible the customer service is at Northern Tool. I needed a new welding machine desperately for a late repair. I had to go to the store shortly before they closed at 7pm and I know it's not ideal and people want to go home, but I would've been in and out before they were supposed to close. I called on my way to double check inventory and was answered by Robert. He immediately hung up on me after I told him was I was looking for that evening. I tried to call back and nobody answered. I decided to keep going and arrived about ten minutes before they were supposed to close, and the doors were locked. They decided to close early I guess and pretty much ignored me completely. Now, I've worked retail before and I know it sucks, but that's the job. I'm not even asking for a smile, just stand by your hours. It's not ideal for me to be having to buy another machine last minute either but such is life. Whatever. I found something that worked at Home Depot. I'm not saying they're the best either, but at least they're reliable. Terrible experience at Northern Tool will keep me away in the future. This location doesn't even carry Knipex anymore... I wish I had looked here rather than Northern Tools site before buying the PowerHorse pressure washer. It got 5 stars on their site, and now I know first-hand why: they only post the reviews they like! The pressure washer died after 5 minutes of use. No spark. Tool it into the store for warranty repair. After a week and no communication I called the Service Dept. The one person shop told me it would be 3-4 weeks before he looked at it. Stated all the stores are that backed up (not saying much for the quality of their products, does it?). So I said I would come in and just get a new one since it has a 2 year warranty. He said no. Once you add gas or oil you can't return it. (Real, real hard to know a gas engine is defective BEFORE you add gas and oil!) I'm now stuck between a rock and a hard space. I'm out $350 with nothing to show for it, other than a hope and a prayer that they sooner or later fix it. read more

I have purchased battery chargers, storage bins, tools, wheel chalks all kinds of things and never had a bad experience. The people have been absolutely fantastic!! read more

Northern Tool carries all of those things you never knew you needed. This store is just a little smaller than some of their others. Strange since they just relocated into it. If they do not have it on-site you can order it on-line. Product lines are great values and reliable. read more

Our first few experiences with them were much better than Rebecca's. Northern Tool seems to have some concept of quality and doesn't just stock the absolute cheapest of the cheap like some other stores. We've bought quite a few things from them over time and had good experiences with it. And you can order from the web site and have your things shipped to the store even if it's not in stock. And we've not had a problem with them being out of items. We've actually found things that other stores were out of but this store still had. I will say that some of the employees do seem far less than intersted in remaining emplloyed. Robert in particular seems to have an attitude problem. Others, like Gary, are consisitently helpful though so I have to write that off as a few grumpy people. As for problem resolution, I've not had a good exerience with a couple of specific employees. We had a website order that got lost. And even though a couple of the people at the store weren't very helpful a quick call to the corporate office got everything straightened out. I went in to have my chainsaw fixed. I had worked on it myself and the only issues was the fuel lines were cracked and they needed to be replaced. It was more work than I wanted to do so took it to Northern. Off the bat they insisted I pay $37 for a "diagnosis" even though I told them I only wanted the fuel lines replaced. Not having any choice I was forced to pay the price up front at the cashier, only after that was I allowed to speak to the mechanic, Tom. I told him what I need, he agreed and said it will be another $25 to change the lines. I agreed and left the chainsaw. He told me it will be ready in 4 weeks. OK, 4 weeks, I did not complain. Four weeks later I get a call that it's ready. Went to pick it up, and was handed a bill for $57. I said nothing even though it was twice the quote. Tom quickly started the chainsaw, than shut it off and handed to me. Everything seemd OK so I paid and took it home. Next day I was ready to use it, but when I yanked the draw string, NOTHING! I tried over and over, but nothing. Then I realized that the trigger wasn't jumping back meaning the recoil spring was missing or damaged affecting the carburetor from fueling the engine. So now either I had to do all the work I paid for, myself, by opening the engine and fixing the spring, or take it back so they could do the job right. So that day I went back, but right off the bat Tom became hostile and denied knowing anything about the spring. In fact he said he had no idea how to fix it and told me to leave and find some other place to get it fixed. He mumbled about having to go on vacation and had no time for me. Tom was literally yelling at me, kicking me out of the store, when the manager intervened. He pulled me aside, took the chainsaw, and told me to return in 45 minutes. When I returned the chainsaw was now working. So in the end it did get fixed. But Tom ruined the whole experience. He was aggressive, rude, insulting, and either he or the manager knew how to fix the problem but initially refused. I think this is unacceptable behavior and an employee like Tom should not be allowed to cause these kind of unnecessary problems for both customers and the store. Tom should be fired. read more

My review was rejected from Northern Tools twice so I will post here as reviews should be unbiased. The below review is for a part I ordered online via Northern Tools. The lead time to obtain this product was two weeks which is unacceptable as a customer. My initial review was rejected as Northern Tools indicated shipping was out of their hands. The part I ordered was a .035 mig welding tip, which is a very common part. It takes two weeks to get that. That's fine, I can take my business elsewhere as they cannot take a negative feedback or fix the shipping issue on a well known part. read more

Received this product at the end of April of this year. Boxed nicely, everything as it should be, etc. Assembly was easy and straight forward. I used it sometime in early May and it performed as advertisded. Flushed the tank, waited for the next time. The next time came just 2 days ago. I hooked it up to the back of my mower, filled it up and started down the driveway and tried using it. The pump didn't want to work. I checked the electrical connections, etc. but to no avail. I got a Multimeter and tested the battery to be sure there was enough power to the pump, which turned out good. Wiring was good (it's still practically brand new, only used once) as were the terminals on the battery (corrosion free, the battery is fairly new being purchased a few months back in the spring). Keep in mind, this is only the second time using this sprayer and it is garage kept and in no way left in any type of rough environment. I emailed Northern Tool and explained what has happened. They write back apologizing for the "inconvenience regarding your sprayer" and that "as this item is past our 45 day return/exchange policy, we are unable to issue return authorization instructions for this item." Purchase date is April 21st, my email to them was June 23d. Yes, out of the 45 day range; but apparently not close enough to keep a return customer. Evidently mine is not the first review explaining a defective pump: the pump is brand new and I should have reasonable expectation that it will work for a while; nothing lasts forever, and I get that. BUT, Northern Tool continues selling this product fully knowing the pump is - at best - subpar. I suppose 45 days isn't such a bad policy considering the likelihood the pump will perform on its maiden voyage and that most people won't be spraying again within 45 days. The unit itself doesn't seem to be bad. But if the pump doesn't work then it cannot be a "sprayer." Rather, it is just an overpriced 13 gallon storage tank and nothing more. I suppose what I can do is find a replacement pump - certainly not one which has anything to do with this company - and try it from there. If not, I will just chalk this up to a poor purchase and find something else. I can say that I will never purchase so much as a package of seeds from this company, ever again. It's too bad, because I like the store and browse around it often. All my other purchases at Northern were fine and the employees in the store were friendly enough. But after this, and make no mistake continuing to sell this sprayer with its defective pump is a poor business practice, I am done with Northern Tool. And if family/friends ask me where to find similar products I will tell them where NOT to go. read more

I bought a Troy Built mower from Northern and it worked great for one year, then while mowing front yard I shut it down to mow the back and when I tried to pull start it was froze up. Woulden't turn at all. I took it back to Northern for warranty repair which should have been just replacement. Six weeks later they still have my mower and no one has looked at it yet. Terrible customer service. Warranty work should be priority one. Don't buy anything here they suck. read more

The store is fairly new. My husband says it is always empty compared to the other one that he frequents, which is good. Problem is they don't have the inventory the other stores do. And I quote, "If you want to build a go-kart or mow your lawn, you're fine". Otherwise you need to visit one of the other stores. Now, that is a bit of an exaggeration, but if you are looking for something specialized or really don't want to waste a trip, you might call ahead and make sure they carry what you are looking for. They did have a fun sale section down the main aisle, and they had a selection of work shoes, boots, and clothes. Part of why I'm giving them 2 stars is that on multiple occasions store employees walked past me while I was looking lost and even though they made eye contact they didn't ask if I needed help with anything. They weren't busy so they really have an opportunity to provide good service, but in this case, didn't. read more

Northern used to be a great place for tools and supplies. But after dealing them for numerous years, I've experienced a dramatic decline in customer service and item availability. The manager at the Plano store is one of the most indifferent people you will ever meet and doesn't seem to care whether you buy from them or not. And if you contact the online branch of Northern, it doesn't get any better. "Bait and switch" is the name of the game with this company. You try to order a sale item the day it comes out, and they'll tell you "the item is no longer available". This is a company with customer service issues and clearly no intent to correct them. I would recommend buying from any other place, even if the cost is a bit higher. read more

I recently bought a 3" north star trash pump from Northern Tool in Plano. The pump was 5 months old and it locked up on me. I took it back to the store to get repaired. After almost 2 months in the shop I was told it was not covered under the warranty. The service tech told me that the pump had been submerged in water and that's why it locked up. I assured him that that didn't happen, he basically called me a liar and told me he could fix it but it would cost me. I talked to the manager and explained to him that our company does a lot of business with them and we would have to rethink that if we could not get this resolved. He told me that's to bad and said there was nothing he could do for me. I will not deal with this company on a personal or business level again. read more

Took a coupon received in mail to pick up a few things. Found exactly what I needed. Ended up with 4 charges on my credit card (hopefully totaling to zero) and leaving the store with nothing after wasting an inordinate amount of time trying to sort through why I was charged over $62 for a $23 purchase ($28 before coupon). Cashier couldn't get refund correct and was put out by me continually challenging her math. Had to get asst mgr to void everything. Ridiculous wast of time. read more

purchase a quincy air compressor purchase additional ext warranty. most of the time when i purchase this warranty i can drive over and exchange failed product.not so says acting night mgr. after finding my original purchase receipt. i was force to call quincy number given was wrong. i called extended warranty and the product was not registered in their system.after 1 hour of phone questions i was told to call quincy and they would call them. the next day with the air compressor still in my truck i called the store mgr of this place.and explain the issue with compressor and since the vendor was 21 minutes away from my shop could i take it to them . i was very surprise on what came out from his mouth next. it seems he profile the call and instead of listening or answering the question i gave him he was baffled in why i wanted to drive over to this place with a bad product when they send out tech to check it on the site.after asking to speak to his regional Mgr . requested his phone number he refused 3 times he finally admits his regional mgr was in the store. i was not ask to be put on hold and it was way over 15 mins? i could have thought he was planning a hoax and putting on someone acting as his boss.very unprofessional, never listen that i went to his store earlier that night w compressor. and letting him know i still had the compressor in the back of my pick up. along with the compressor it had new changes to the motor.which was a failed part . redesign he insisted i was comparing wrong stock numbers i took a picture of the price tag and sku match my original receipt. needless to say i will never buy a item from that store again. read more

I got a mailer with discounted lawnmower service. I wasn't aware they had this service, but since it is close to home figured I would give it a try. When I dropped the mower off they said it would be about 2 weeks. I was ok with that. I called one day before the 2 week period was up to check on progress. The guy in the service dept. laughed and said they meant it would be 2 weeks before he could even look at it. Busy time of year I guess and he said he figured maybe 4 weeks to get to my mower. 6 weeks to sharpen blades, change oil and speak plug etc. Needless to say I told him I was coming to pick it up to have service done somewhere else. He said fine. So I picked it up about 11:00 on Thursday and dropped off at Richardson Chain and saw. They had it complete in 2 days with service above and beyond expectations. Hope management at northern tool gets the picture from this unsatisfied customer. read more
