We used Northern Virginia Tree Experts again to cut down one dead maple tree and one small redbud tree. They also ground the stumps with their robotic stump grinder. Chris came and gave us a written estimate. Their price was comparable with other estimates. This company offers discounts during their low season. Brian, the office manager, was friendly and offered us a 10% discount if we wanted to take care of the two trees now. The crew of four showed up on time. They were efficient and finished the job quickly. They cleaned up thoroughly after completion. We were satisfied with their service and highly recommend them if you need any tree service. read more

Bad company. Recklessly cut down a tree next to my friend's house and damaged his fence. Refused to replace it and blamed it on rotten wood when before and after photos show it clearly damaged the fence. My friend said the representatives were real jerks about it and refused to take responsibility. read more

I hired NVTE to remove two dead trees, a large maple very close to my house and an old pine toward the eastern side of my yard. I got three different estimates for the work, and NVTE was the cheapest (they were 41% cheaper than Four Brothers and WAY cheaper than Tree Techs). Also, NVTE offers a 10% military discount, so that was great of them. (Note: That's for tree removal -- Four Brothers was cheaper on pruning and stump grinding.) The estimation process was done completely without me even needing to be home, and they left the quote on my door. I then selected the items from the quote that I wanted and called to confirm an appointment date, signed the quote and sent it via email. On the day of the appointment, the guys arrived on time (which I can tell you just from the estimate Four Brothers came out to do that they ran a couple hours late, another reason I went with NVTE). Two young Hispanic guys handled everything. They fought the rain and got it all done in about five hours. I'm really pleased with the cleanup. They left minimal sawdust around, and they picked up every twig. Everything was hauled away perfectly, and they even used a blower on my driveway to get rid of sawdust remnants there. I really have no complaints other than they left a bit of the wire on my fence interior bent up and tore up some grass on the other fence entrance from dragging tree debris. Given how wet it was when they were to that phase of the job though, I see those as minor things and collateral damage for the most part. Overall, great job. If I need another tree removed, they will get my business. read more

Our property boasted a 350 year old Willow Oak tree. When we arrived almost thirty years ago it had a magnificent canopy. But even old trees die. In our case, we sadly watched as our tree lost one limb after another; dying back a little at a time. Finally we were left with one of the three main leaders of the trunk completely dying off yet remained standing in denial and in spite. Large limbs from this leader were hanging over a couple of our out buildings and the danger could no longer be ignored. We accepted the loss of much of our beloved tree and went in search of a 'good' tree service. We had this tree pruned by two other companies. Neither of them did a very good job. But, at that point, I was looking for cost and simply made a poor choice at the time in hiring these other tree services. With those bitter tastes still in my mouth, I went looking for a new service. I called several places. Some even came out and gave me an estimate. Some did not even respond. I found NVTE online and gave them a call and made an appointment for someone to come and consult with us about this tree. They sent someone out within five days. The gentleman who came by was driving one of their larger work trucks; a good sign to me as it looked as if this person just came from a project in which he was participating. I was encouraged that this guy was not simply a salesperson. In fact, he told me, he was part of the family who owns the business and described a multi-generational local business that had provided positively received services for 60 years. He was sensitive to the fact that we obviously cared about the tree and were being conscientious about hiring someone who would respect the tree. The Oak was stressed with a lot of dead wood in the upper branches. He suggested how they would like to prune the sickly and dead limbs, leaving enough, hopefully, to begin growing anew and gave us a written estimate. For the scope of work I found the proposed cost quite acceptable. We accepted the proposal and scheduled the work. Within a week. Today they came equipped with a large bucket truck, a smaller truck with towed chipper and four workers. I had concerns about trucks on my lawn as it is a bit soft after all the rain that we have had recently. But they acknowledged my concern and deployed pressure mats upon which to drive the truck up to the tree. Throughout the entire project, these guys worked diligently and efficiently. Within a few hours, the work had been completed, the branches had been chipped and the large sections of tree truck were bucked up into firewood length pieces that I, as part of my upper body work-out program, will be splitting for the coming Winter. Everything was left clean and free from debris, including blowing off my patio and surrounding areas. Great team work, great team. No complaints whatsoever (so far so good ) and I am completely satisfied with every aspect of my business with NVTE. I found them knowledable, understanding and confident in their sales and compitent in the execution of the project. I have dealt with a lot of tree services professionally and found many to be fairly perfunctory in how they perfomed. NVTE's crew were professional and safe with a great respect for the areas under threat from falling branches and carefully eased the cut sections to the ground. Prior to the work, Chris, the gentleman that visited our home and drafted the service order was pleasant, respectful (This was during the Corona-Virus Pandemic) and listened to the exact work work we wanted. On most of my trees these guys did a good job - an old Silver Maple, 5 Leyland Cyprus, etc. However, they absolutely butchered one beloved crepe myrtle and cut too much off 2 others. But THEY BUTCHERED ONE OF MY FAVORITE TREES, COMPLETELY OUTSIDE THE SCOPE OF OUR AGREEMENT. Here is what Bryan wrote on the work order for 3 crepe myrtles in my front yard. "A more even skirt can be achieved on crape myrtles but does not have to be 8 feet [as an earlier estimate had said.] We could start with 6 ft and see how you like it." Well, they took the crepe myrtles well beyond even the 8 feet Bryan says wasn't necessary. On one tree on which the lowest branches were well above 6 feet, they took off at least an ADDITIONAL 6 feet. This beautiful tree that used to shade my window and provide a wonderful pathway for my front door now looks like a twig. Bryan tried making me feel better by saying, "look, this is how much your tree grew this year alone. It will grow out again." Well, what he showed me was about 1 foot of growth, which means that in about 6 years it will grow back again. I wouldn't let these guys mow my lawn, much less trim my trees. Stay away! read more

UPDATING 6/12/17 (Lowering from five to two stars) The first time went so well that I used them again. I asked to have two things done: A. Remove a short little dead tree, and B. Prune back all the branches hanging over my neighbor's yard. The arborist (John) left an estimate that was essentially illegible, but I figured that the first time went well so the fact that I couldn't really read the description he had written wouldn't be an issue. I was pretty clear about what I wanted (written in an email), and they had a good track record, so I was sure it was fine. My mistake. They came and went. They took down the tree and pruned one or two branches overhanging the neighbor's yard, but left the majority of the overhang. Instead, they cut out two shrubs. Now, I never once mentioned the word "shrubbery". I never asked them to remove them. Hell, I didn't even know they were dead. And when I got the actual typed invoice, I discovered they charged $120 to remove things I never asked to have removed (while ignoring my request to have the branches removed from over the neighbor's home). I emailed about the issue. John called and left a message while I was at work, and added he would be out of town for a week. Great. My advice - especially if you are assigned John the Arborist - is to demand that your estimate be typed and not handwritten. It is very shady (no pun intended) behavior. Bottom line is that I thought I had found a reliable and trustworthy tree removal service, but it's more likely I just got lucky the first time around. ORIGINAL REVIEW: Awesome to work with. Great response time to my initial request for an estimate, and they actually finished the work a couple of days earlier than anticipated. Their price was significantly less than other estimates, but the work (pruning a bunch of trees away from my roof) was top-notch. Outstanding Service. We recently used Northern Virginia Tree Experts for extensive tree trimming, including the removal of one exceptionally tall and precariously placed tree. Their arborist provided a very reasonable price estmiate, lower than the other services I contacted. The cutting crew, who arrived just one week after the contract was signed, was amazing. They quickly and carefully removed all the limbs/trees as stated in the contract AND meticulously cleaned up all the debris. They were true professionals. Chris came to my home to do a consultation on my fig tree and even gave bonus advice on a decorative cherry tree in my yard. The knowledge that he shared will hopefully help me save the new growth from my mostly dead fig tree. If the tree does not survive, I will definitely use this company to remove the stump and roots so that I can plant a new fig tree. I appreciate that Chris understood my sentimental attachment to the tree and gave pointers for the best chance for survival. We hired this company to prune one of our trees, and they ended up cutting off all the healthy areas, and ultimately damaging the tree. We researched the "certified arborist" who was responsible and his certification had expired. We were able to get our money back in the end, but our tree is in horrible condition. read more

Hired NVTE to remove a very large and dead birch tree from my backyard. Although I was very nervous due to how close it was to my house, NVTE did a great job dismantling the tree piece by piece until it was completely gone. I hired Northern Virginia Tree Experts to remove a tree in my front yard. The job was done in two phases. First was a crew of three men that cut and removed the tree. They were very clean and neat with there work insuring that all the chips were blown off the driveway and street. Phase two was the stump removal. This was a one man job with a very large stump grinder. He ground the stump at least 12 inches below the ground surface and then gathered all of the ground pieces into one neat pile. He then made sure my driveways was clean before he left. I would definitely hire them again if needed. read more

Back in 2007, I was out of the country when a storm knocked over a large tree in my front yard. A friend who housesat for me randomly contacted 4 local firms to get prices for removal. 2 of these companies wanted around $3500. Another wanted about $600. NVTE asked for about $900. I went with NVTE because they seemed more professional than the firm with the lowest quote - that estimate was literally written on a scrap of paper, whereas NVTE used "real letterhead" and showed evidence of insurance/etc. NVTE handled my fallen tree and I've used them repeatedly since 2007. They're always prompt, responsible and fair-priced. I've not even bothered to look for any other companies - I feel sure that NVTE will offer good rates and will do the job well. read more

We recently hired this firm to trim two hornbeams and a cherry tree in the back yard of our townhouse. Their work was very unsatisfactory. They did not remove a number of branches overhanging our property line, which we asked them to do; and they "trimmed" the two hornbeams so savagely that they were left looking very ugly and largely stripped, and they likely will take years to recover. This company was asked to give us an estimate for tree removal. We were told the gentleman would arrive in the afternoon and he showed up in the early morning instead without any notice. Our neighbor and I allow our dogs to run between our yards and had the company or the gentleman called ahead to notify us of a early arrival, the dogs would be placed in an area where they couldn't reach visitors. Our dogs are friendly and may bark but will not bite. I asked him to give me a moment while I placed my dogs in a seperate room and proceeded to walk out front. The neighbor's dog and the dog she is currently puppy sitting were in my front yard. The gentleman swatted at the dogs with his clipboard while yelling at me to remove the dogs. I told him that if he were to please step back on the other side of the gate while I did this then I had no problem. He yelled at me and said he would go to the gate when the dogs were removed. As I explained to him, its not possible to remove them with him standing within the gate. He was rude and at this point my neighbor had come out of her house and was visibly upset and crying because he was so rude and she thought my boyfriend and I would be angry with her. I told her we weren't upset with her because we had no advanced notice that this man was coming early. With permission from my boyfriend and once the dogs were contained, I kindly declined the estimate and asked the man to kindly leave our property. I told him we were no longer interested in this company and he said that he was no longer interested in giving us an estimate either. He stormed off to his car and took off. I did call and report the incident to his manager and she assured me that she spoke to him and discussed the matter. I was thanked for the information and told that they don't expect him to behave this way in the future. She did say that he agreed his behavior was inappropriate. I will not use this company based on this. First impressions are very important and this behavior is not how a company stays in business or obtains new clients. I have worked in customer service for over 20 years and I know the proper way to conduct business. read more

Very upset with their work - they "accidentally" cut down a tree that was NOT part of our work order because the work crew did not understand the order, as they did not speak English, and gave a third tree a nice gouge with a chainsaw. The management was apologetic, and tried to explain the accident away due to "miscommunication" but that will not replace our maple tree that was over 3 stories tall. Bottom line - if the work crew does not follow the order - all of their work is a gamble. If you want to get rid of all the trees in your yard - go ahead and call them. I even showed them the tree and verbally confirmed the order....still shaking my head. read more

I hired this company to remove a large Silver Maple Tree and trim one other maple tree. They Provided Estimates right on time by a Certified Arborists. My other maple tree had a possible split risk and they recommended adding bolts to hold it together in strong storm. The work was scheduled really fast and they completed it in time. None of my shrubs or plants around the trees were damaged. That was a big relief. They hauled away all debris. There rates are very reasonable and I highly recommend them. read more
