The cherry tree in our front yard had grown so much it had grown into our house and the branches were too low over our walkway as well. We called Tyson's Tree based on a recommendation by friends. They were able to set up an appointment very quickly, and when they came out they quickly explained our options and the pricing for each option. Once we selected the work to be done -- cutting down the crown and shaping -- we were able to set up a time to get the work done very quickly as well. They explained what they would need in terms of space (e.g., open parking spaces) to do the work as well. The workers showed up on time, confirmed with me the work they were to do, and started on it immediately. When finished they reviewed it with me as well. The quality of work was outstanding. Tyson's just completed two long days of tree removal at my home in Fairfax Station. Exceptional service on all fronts from tree removals with a crane for a massive white oak to cabling down a large tall eastern white pine. The white oak was huge over 176 years old but they took it down safely with a highly skilled crew lead by expert crane operator. Truly a show to watch. They showed up on time, worked extremely hard and continued to cleanup the work areas throughout the process. The oak tree was right next to and overhanging the house, so naturally they blow off the roof when done. The entire tree removal process from obtaining the initial estimate to completion deserved an exceptional rating with superior value added. It was all the little things that were done during each day without asking that made it a pleasure to work with Tyson's. They went above and beyond what I was expecting and will definitely be using them exclusively for all future work. We have lot's of trees and I will look forward to working with them again. Just had Chris and his crew take down a difficult to access HUGE tree in my backyard with a crane. The weather was supposed to be getting rough but they were here first thing. The crane was put in place and our driveway protected. It took about four hours, and the weather cooperated. Everything was cleaned up, stowed and the wood we wanted to keep stacked up. Except for the now removed tree, it was like they had never been here. Mother Nature opened the heavens and started a downpour right after they left to help a homeowner with a tree on their roof. They brought a cherry picker but didn't use it. The team of four worked great, highly professional, and "exceeded our expectations," actually. They had two climbers up about 50 feet clearing a failing oak (with wilt?). They were extremely safety conscious throughout and made sure they didn't harm surrounding (established) vegetation. They were deliberate and prompt - took 3.5 hours about. Definitely an excellent experience - I learned a lot myself! - and I would recommend TYSON'S TREE SERVICE. I cannot recommend Chris and his team enough! I had 5 companies come out to provide me with quotes for cleaning up an uprooted tree and providing recommendations on any additional trees that needed to be cut or trimmed. Chris was the most responsive of the group - he came to my property within 1 hr of reaching out, did a walk through and provided a detailed recommendation on what he suggested and why. He also priced out each item individually and the cost if done all together. He provided by far the best price for taking down an extremely large double lead oak and even when it took longer to do than anticipated he did not ask for an adjustment in price. It took longer than he anticipated to do the job and he was extremely communicative. He came on site a couple of times to check on the crew and the work and the team did a great job of cleaning up all the debris. Pricing was competitive with other companies - a little higher for some of the standard trees but not outrageous and Chris matched the prices I was receiving. Made appointment for Chris at Tyson's Tree Services to come out at 10am and I took off work to meet him at the house. He never showed up, never called or anything. At 10:30am I called the office and spoke a guy and he said he would have Chris call me. I waited and waited but Chris never called or text to say he was sorry for not showing up or that he was running late,etc. Would have taken him five seconds to send me a text saying he couldn't make it. Wasted couple of hours of my work vacation time because I took off work just to be home to meet Chris. He always used to praise the owner (Mark) not only in his interpersonal relationship but also his professionalism with the work. Had Tyson's Tree Service out for an estimate. The price quoted was reasonable - not the highest, but not the lowest. I originally picked them over of the other three estimates because I was eager to get the job done and they were able to come out within a week to perform the service. Long story short, my date was delayed 3 weeks due to inclement weather on my original date, which really ticked me off. But when the 3 guys came to take down a VERY large tree that was just feet away from my house, they did an amazing job! I had to leave twice to run errands and felt comfortable leaving them there to do their work. They do not vacuum up every piece of saw dust, but they cleaned up FAR, FAR better than I expected. We recently had to have a tree removed from our front yard. Within 24 hours, an arborist came to assess the condition of our tree - he was very professional and personable. The price was competitive with the other services we had researched. We arranged for the tree to be removed the next day. The arborist called twice to let us know when the crew would be there to take down the tree, which we felt was excellent service. Even better, the crew arrived when he said they would. 45 minutes later, the tree was gone. It was pretty cool to see how the men took the tree down. Tyson's came out to remove a HUGE oak tree in my backyard. There wasn't much space to work with in terms of proximity to my house, deck, and shed, so worker safety and potential property damage were top concerns of mine. Tyson's beat out several other competitors. Again, this was a gigantic tree that ended up costing several thousand dollars, and Tyson's price was far lower than anyone else. I requested the company's insurance information just to verify, and there was no issue. The team came, did an outstanding job, and cleaned up afterwards. My neighbors also got some free family entertainment in the process as they watched. Without a doubt, I will put them on my short list of recommended contractors. read more

I can't speak to the actual work they do, but don't even bother calling them unless you have lots of cash you need to blow, and a pretty healthy dose of patience as well. As others have noted, their trucks are everywhere so I figured that they must be doing something right and contacted them for an estimate for my tree work - trimming some, removing a number of others. The office was very nice and I was able to get someone out within a week. On the scheduled time, the estimator was at my door. So far so good. Or not. The guy kept asking me what kind of tree we were looking at. Seemed like he should know that? As we started walking through the yard, I noticed he wasn't writing anything down so I stated that we had a bunch of trees to work on, and asked if he needed some paper to write it down. Nope, he would remember it. Okey dokey. We walked around and discussed each tree, and what needed to be done. Most were either trim it or cut it down and grind the stump. Nothing too crazy. We get to the last tree, and he can't remember which were trim and which were cut so we had to go over it again. This time, when I reminded him to include the stump grinding, he said they didn't really doooooo that, and I should call some stump experts. I thought he meant for just one tree that is problematic, but he clarified that he meant for all the trees. ?? Wait, what? A tree service company that doesn't grind stumps? After pushing a bit he relented that they did actually do that but I would be better off using a different company. This was silly and I asked that he include the cost of the stump grinding for all but the problematic tree. When he presented the estimate to me, he got about half way down the list, and started dropping the prices as he went. Why would you bother to write up the entire order line item, then correct yourself on about half the trees? I asked if the removals included the grinding, and he said, "No, that is extra, but I didn't include that on here because... well, I just didn't want to." Then he said each stump would be between $50-$150 "ballpark". What about a written estimate is ballpark?? He also didn't total it all up so he didn't get to hear me laugh out loud when I added it up. It was literally twice what the other estimates were, not including the stumps. That is a $3,000 difference folks. So, if you want a 'ballpark' estimate, and you want to have to call another company to finish the work, and pay about double, then by all means, call Tyson's. Otherwise, there are a number of great companies that do great work at reasonable prices. read more

Tyson's tree service removed a 80-90' recently deceased Tulip Popular tree from our back yard recently. The arborist who assessed the job was quick and knowledgeable, this was followed up by a phone call from the front office for scheduling and to see if I had any questions. The guys who removed the tree worked as hard as any I have ever seen, they were strong, competent and left a clean work area. Our job was difficult due to the fact they couldn't bring a crane in and the tree was right next to a new 6' wooden fence, plus they did not have access to cut from the neighbor's yard. The men worked all day removing this tree and I thought it was a fair price for the work done. As a professional horticulturist (Tyson Tree was unaware of my occupation) I am always being asked for referrals on tree work and I would definitely recommend Tyson's tree. read more

Called on tysons tree service first because I see the trucks everywhere. After a huge tree fell during bad storms, they sent a rude old man to give us an estimate. He could see we were in a bad situation with the felled tree and gave us the high pressure sales tactic. He quoted a huge price and said if we didn't take it on the spot, we wouldn't see him again for at least 3 weeks due to all of the other tree jobs we was negotiating. We told him he was the first estimate and he was very high pressure said that no one else was coming for estimates due high demand for tree removal. What a jerk. We got several other estimates and had another company do a great job at half the price quoted by tysons. I would never call tysons again. read more

I called last Wednesday morning to have someone come out and look at a tree in our front yard that appeared to have fungus on it. Whoever I talked to said someone would evaluate it and get back to me either that afternoon or the next day. Never heard from anyone. I called again Friday and left a message on the voicemail. Five days later, again, no reply. Update -- the afternoon that I posted, someone called and said they would be over the next day. Never happened. Economy Tree Service from Woodbridge came out the day they said they would, treated the tree and it was sprouting leaves within a week. read more

I had a very large oak tree in my backyard that needed to come down. With bids from 3 companies, Tyson's Tree Service came in the lowest. They also approached the job like it was no big deal. The other 2 companies seemed overwhelmed with how difficult a job it would be and their bids reflected that (I had a 4th company that took a look at the tree and politely declined to do the job). Tyson's Tree spent two days taking the tree down, bringing in a crane the second day to complete the job. In the end I was very pleased with their work. They were careful not to cause any damage to my house, driveway or yard. The worker who came out to grind the stump did a fantastic job. This is a review I previously posted under a different sign-in. Yelp for some reason "unrecommended" it, but I will not sit quietly by and let a 5-star rating for this company stand unchallenged. Hope it makes it through and stays up this time! My take-away from my experience with Tyson's Tree is the following: ubiquity does not equal quality; do not make final payment on any job until all work is complete, no matter how sympathetic you may feel toward the innocent worker who comes to do a portion of the job. When searching for a tree removal company, I figured, "These guys are just everywhere, I see their trucks all the time. They must be good and highly regarded if so many people are using them." Emphatically, not so. I am so disappointed in this company and would urge anyone to avoid doing business with them if possible. They came to my home in November 2011 and gave me a reasonable estimate for the removal of some trees. Having been burned in the past by a different tree service company on the issue, I made sure to get an estimate for stump grinding *with removal of all mulch*. I then confirmed, once with the estimator and twice with the dispatcher, that the job should include stump grinding and removal of all associated mulch. A few weeks later, after the trees had been removed (successfully and thoroughly), a man came to grind the stumps. After he'd finished, when I asked him about removing the mulch, he claimed he had no work order for that. He got the dispatcher on his cell, and the dispatcher said he wasn't sure that I'd wanted mulch removal. Give me a break. When I reminded him that I'd previously confirmed just that, twice with him and once with the estimator, he said, "Oh, yeah ... well, our truck that does that is broken down. We'll get them out there next week." This was late December 2011. Today, the day on which their men finally came to get the mulch, is May 19, 2012. In the interim, my husband and I both called them, with increasing frequency, and each time were promised that the crew would be out "as soon as possible," "by the end of the week," etc., to no avail. Their work today was the culmination of a week of near-daily calls, and marked the third day in a row I was promised the crew would arrive by late afternoon. I'm glad the work is finally done; their work, when undertaken, is fine. But the 6-month duration of this job was 5 months too long for me - I will never use this company again and would offer to take down any friend's or family member's tree myself rather than see them use this company. Please think twice about using Tyson's Tree. If you do end up choosing them for your project, make sure your contract is an explicit reflection of your wishes, get a written timetable for completion up-front, and withhold your final payment until all work is complete. Otherwise, be prepared to call and call often, and to deal with broken promises, for the duration of the project. read more
