Consistently documented vaccines wrong, vet tech performed incorrect services, rude to customers

As always, the staff at Northfield Veterinary Hospital are so helpful, friendly & efficient! My 16 year old Shih Tzu Sparky had an issue... We couldn't even touch his face to figure out what was causing his pain. We picked up a pain medication to calm him and scheduled an appointment. Turns out it was a very manageable eye infection. The eye drops Dr. Shelly prescribed immediately cleared the problem. Dr. Shelly truly cares about her furry patients. A week later he's back to being his loveable lap dog self! (Dr. Shelly has been our vet since moving to Denver 10 years ago. She has compassionately cared for 2 other Shih Tzu dogs and now 2 cats. Adore Dr.Sandal for her kindness and compassion. I drive 45 mins to get there. So worth the time and effort. Now for the "Office Mgr." Megan is rude and condescending. So busy being busy. Why do I saw this. I was literally 2 mins late for my appointment due to traffic. Was told I would have to be rescheduled for a later date or wait 1 hour + so see the other Vet. This translates into I either drive 11/2 hours for NOTHING or wait an hour for an appointment. All over a 2 minute tardiness. This means their time is ever so more valuable and my time is worth NOTHING! There was NO mention of the tardiness/rescheduling policy in ANY communication with their office. How was I to know? When I spoke to Megan about this issue she was very combative, arrogant, and self righteous. Her utter lack of Customer Service skills is deplorable. Megan is a large detriment to Northfield Vet Hospital! Unfortunately Megan handled my payment process and escalated my service charges in revenge for my dressing down of her. Inappropriate and childish. My complaint is not the first about Megan and won't be the last. It is exactly this sort of demeanor that DESTROYS a business! read more

It pains me to write this review. We have been with Northfield for more than 3 years. We felt like we were part of the Northfield family. I am disabled and on a very low fixed income. The vets have always worked with us to keep the costs down. Unfortunately they refused to work with us on the fees at all. The costs are high. The clerk was rude. I have not actually seen or talked to the vets in a very long time. we are still looking for somewhere else to go. read more

This review is not about necessarily the overall hospital but Dr. Lai and the service he provided for our critically ill cat yesterday. When we took the cat to the vet upon examination he reported a heart murmur, frail cat and pale gums. He briefly mentioned enlarged kidneys but his focus was more on the heart. He then said he wanted to do an x ray and also blood work. But if he had noticed enlarged kidneys why did I need to pay for a whole body x ray? Why did we not start with blood work to get an idea if anything was going on first. This ended up costing me almost $200 for a useless x ray in my opinion. He told my wife that it would only be 30 Minutes for the x ray and blood work. We sat in the car for almost 1 1/2 hours after waiting. Only after we called and asked about an update did he finally call back about 15 minutes later. Dr. Lai explained the situation to us and said the prognosis was poor. After this he tried to say he would like to do an ultrasound of the kidneys and hospitalize the kitten at $1,200-$1,500 dollars per day to give him fluids. After this he told us it's probably not a good prognosis but we can recheck the values in 24 hours and see where we are. Why would I put the cat through this! This seemed like trying to get more money out of me at this point! Dr. Lai also showed little compassion when we told him we would prefer not to put the cat through this. Just kept pushing us to make an appointment to euthanize the cat. There was no sorry for your loss or anything like that. He was the most uncompassionate doctor I have ever dealt with. Never would I want to see him again at this practice. The only reason I will consider coming back to this vet is for Dr. Sandel. I think Dr. Lai has a lot of learning to do on how to be a compassionate and sympathetic doctor when making those tough end of life decisions. I left with a feeling of being very angry with the doctor. Not to mention was this a very tough decision to make. read more

We just moved to Colorado so I brought in my one year old german shepherd for the first time yesterday for her vaccines. The reception ladies were so sweet taking my dog's weight. My dog was all over the place as she does have fear in new situations. The tech and Dr. Sandel were extremely understanding of my dog's behavior. I felt SO bad when my dog started barking at them in the exam room, so Dr. Sandel suggested separating my dog from me because my dog is probably overprotective. It worked, and it made me feel so much better. I am very pleased with the quality of service and information I received, with the treatment of my pet, and am thankful for the way they gave me the reassurance I needed to make me feel comfortable. This is a LOOONGGG overdue review for this awesome place. We have 3 dogs, all of which have been cared for by the awesome folks at Northfield Vet. Dr. Sandel is welcoming, patient, understanding, and takes the time to answer all of our questions. Our Lola had surgery there and HATES being kenneled and Dr. Sandel was sweet enough to have Lola hang out with her in her office. So sweet! We also have a nervous, anxious dog named Seven that does just fine here. What a relief. Jen Weston is also amazing. I just can't say enough great things. So happy to have found this place. If you need a great vet that takes the time to really talk things thru and makes sure your animals are well cared for, then this is the place for you. read more

First off, I adopt senior dogs and they come with a gamut of health problems and need expert care. Most pet owners are not in my situation. Northfield could be a great place for routine care if they communicated better with clients. However, that has not been my experience during any of my visits or calls. There are two reasons I would not recommend Northfield. The first is that they are inexperienced. They prescribed my unsteady on her feet senior Gabapentin for chronic pain. On the face of it, that is "a" next step for pain management (she is on another pain med already). The problem is that the vet never discussed side affects with me during the appointment, two of which are unsteadiness and drowsiness. She was already unsteady on her feet due to hip dysplasia and messed up ACLs. Northfield prescribed my fragile, wobbly senior dog a pain med that made her significantly more unsteady on her feet. I gave it to her for a day and a half because I trusted the vet, and then discontinued it after realizing she was just going to sleep and stumble around on this med. In the day and a half she was on Gabapentin, she fell and injured herself to the point I thought I was going to have to put her down. Thankfully I didn't have to, but it took a lot of work to get her back up to where she was before. Had side affects or any aspect of that med been discussed with me, I would not have given it to her. The second reason I would not recommend Northfield is the staff. Every time I've gone in or called (several of each) there has been some issue. The first visit the vet tech knocked my wobbly senior dog over twice while trying to get her weight and a urine sample. The tech was not gentle, didn't pay attention to where my dog was at, and impatiently pushed her around to get the job done. They were not busy and there was no reason for the tech to rush. I had similar experiences during subsequent visits with different techs. I received an email reminder for a heart worm test a few days after an appointment. I would have had the test done that visit had I known it was due, but no one looked at that part of my dog's chart. The last time I called for a refill on one pain med, the receptionist said to call to make sure it was ready before I came in to pick it up. I asked if I "could" pick it up the same day understanding that it is not always an option. The receptionist replied with the exact same sentence with a harsher tone. She could have said, something along the lines of "we close at XX. I'll let the tech know that you want to pick it up today and more than likely you will be able to, but please call to verify it's ready." An hour later I had a missed call from their office with no voicemail. I called them back 10 mins later hoping the refill was ready. As it turns out, the main vet wanted to recheck blood work before refilling the prescription. That is a valid request, however that information would not have been communicated to me had I not seen the missed call and called back as no voicemail was left. To be fair, not all of the techs are rough, there is one who is excellent. The vet is a very nice person and has the potential to become an excellent vet with more experience (thus my multiple visits). They did recommend a couple of things that have helped with my dog's mobility. However, I am not willing to invest in experience when their communication is poor and their staff is collectively mediocre at best. I am fully aware that people have bad days, things happen, and no one is perfect which is why I continued to return hoping the next time would be better only to be proven wrong. read more

Dr Shelly, Dr Lai and all of the staff at Northfield are absolutely amazing. They are the most compassionate and loving group of people that I have ever encountered in a business. They treat you like you are family to them . The care that Dr. Shelly showed when euthanizing our oldest dog, Tinker, due to sudden illness right before Christmas and our new puppy, Noodle, at just 17 weeks old on Tuesday was just very kind. The staff made sure to set up a special room for us to say goodbye to our sweet girl, Noodle, and they gave us plenty of time with her. It was a very warming and heartfelt effort by all of them. One of the amazing techs went out of her way to do something extremely kind and special for us. Dr Lai was so kind when he called about helping us take care of our Noodle when he suspected a brain disorder. He made sure to call us about her labs and to check on her, sent the referral to the neurologist and prescribed medications for her. He let us know that this wasn't our fault. Thank you will never be enough and we are forever grateful that our sweet girls were assisted to the rainbow bridge by all of them. read more

I had high hopes for Northfield Veterinary Hospital. I had experienced Dr. Shelly Sandel when she was at 29th Avenue Animal Hospital and really enjoyed her. She was great as the vet but the rest of the practice needs some MAJOR work. The hospital was still under construction and there was a temporary occupancy permit, which I didn't mind. The customer service and communication I received from everyone but Dr. Sandel was horrible. I walked in with two new puppies for an exam and was greeted with "What's up Dude" by the receptionist while another employee sat laid back in her chair with her arms folded. After check in the other lady with the arms folded said she'd take us back but she was too tired to get up. She was sluggish and acted completely uninterested in seeing my pets. Then when we get into the exam room, they didn't even know where half of their exam equipment was. They scrambled around trying to find things, etc. If this is the case, they really should have remained closed until they were able to function properly. The day after the exam I received a call from Dr. Sandel herself which I appreciated notifying me that the two pups had Giardia and that she had the medicine ready and I could pickup anytime. I go in to pick up the medication and Jen (Vet Asst) is working the front desk. She had no idea what I was talking about. She went in the back for 10 minutes then when she returned she let me know they didn't have enough medication. I explained that Dr. Sandel that said it was ready for pickup so why would she tell me that if it wasn't? I immediately just left and took my two dogs to another vet as it was clear they are a mess and provide poor communication and customer service. I do not recommend taking your animals to this establishment. read more

I, too, chose this vet because of its close proximity to my apartment, but I feel SO lucky I did! Dr. Sandal truly is the best vet. She's honest, upfront, patient, understanding, compassionate. The staff is great too! They caught my dog's hypothyroidism and were so great with getting him on the right dose of medicine. They also did everything they could to do this at the lowest cost to me (the tests are kind of pricey). I always get a call from Dr Sandal after bringing in my dog to check on his well being. I have made appointments via email and phone and both are responded to quickly. They are also very good at reminding you of upcoming vaccinations, etc. read more

I was visiting our son and daughter-in-law who live in Commerce City when our tripod mixed breed dog developed a cyst on her one and only back leg/paw. I took her to a vet near their home and did not like the service we received, in addition, our dog not getting better after 48 hours. I went on the Internet and found Northfield Veterinary Hospital. WOW!! Dr. Sandel was Amazing. She took the time to get to know our dog and gave her a complete exam. Dr. Sandel was so gentle and loving and really put me and our dog at ease. Our dog was given the correct mediation and by the time we drove back to the house she was feeling much better and even took a short walk and had lunch. Dr. Sandel took the time to explain everything and assured me that they would be open over the next several days should I need to return. I, too, moved here from the Atlanta area -- just over a year ago. I chose this vet because of strong recommendation on the Denver A-List, and for location. I am very happy that I did. I have moved to Castle Rock, but will continue to come here for my kitty's care. I had to say "Goodbye" to one of my cats, 17 years old, a few months back, and Dr. Shelley and the staff were very caring and helpful. We together decided on the best course of treatment. But I was so impressed with the care my Great Dane pup received there that I continue to go there even though I've moved. Want to give props to Northfield Veterinary Hospital in Stapleton and Dr. Shelly Sandel and Jen Weston. They did an excellent job spaying Miss Na Pali our 7 month old Goldendoodle. I got a text picture when she went into surgery and a call Saturday morning from Dr Sandel to check on her. They made after care instructions and pain meds a breeze. Her surgery was a bit tougher than normal due to her anatomy, but she is doing great. Hardest part is the cone at night and keeping her from playing. They use IV sedation and intubation which I found more comforting (not all clinics due). FYI new bones and toys are a huge help post op! read more

I was in need of a new vet and Northfield Vet Hospital was one of the closest ones to me. I called to make an appointment and they were able to get me in the next day. My dogs situation became somewhat of an emergency overnight. Dr Shelly was so compassionate and listened to what I wanted and gave me a price quote before doing anything. That night, Dr Shelly and some of the staff stayed late to help my dog Saber out. After the procedure was done, Dr Shelly brought me back and explained what she did and what I needed to do. My dogs situation turned worse in the next week and had to take him back (nothing to do with the procedure that was done or how it was done) Dr Shelly and Jen were once again amazing and helped Saber. I had to take Saber back every 3 days and every time they made me feel comfortable and I felt like they truly cared about Saber. The whole staff was/is amazing. They have taken our elderly dogs into their care with great affection and care. They even opened up earlier than normal this morning so I could drop my 17 year old pup for general anesthesia, gave me an accurate quote, then called to inform of the actual price, performed the necessary dental care and eye care, as well as gave him a trim and bathed him (upon request because he's a grumpy old man that nips at me when I try anymore). I had a very short wait each time, the staff was friendly and caring to my dog. Best of all though was Dr. Shelly. I have taken my dog Dodger to see Dr Sandel and her staff twice now, and I can't say enough good things! Everyone has been super friendly and clearly all animal lovers. They do a great job on recommending what is needed vs trying to up sell you on every service or vaccine that isn't necessary. I've been to Banfield and another vet in town, where I feel like they are trying to rack up the highest bill possible. After the last horrible experience at the vet, Dodger was a little skittish going to Northfield his first time. They've done such a great job of giving lots of love and making Dodger feel comfortable!
