I've been having repairs on clothes and cushions done at Northgate cleaners for years. She has always done a great job. The last few times I've had something mended, I got sticker shock when handing over my credit card, but quickly forgot about it. I just went in to have my daughter's prom dress hemmed and a taken in just a bit at the back. She charged me $118 up front. Again, sticker shock. When I looked at the receipt, one of the up charges was that she was charging me for a dress with a liner. This dress has a liner but the liner didn't need to be hemmed because it is much shorter than the rest of the dress. I went back in and asked to have the dress back and a refund. I then took it to Lily's on 4th street in San Rafael and she charged me $80 for the same adjustments to the dress and told me I didn't need to pay until I pick up. Just sayin. read more

I found this to be fast and pretty inexpensive given my item. I took in a 100% long silk dress after finding some stains on it even though it was in my closet. It took 5 days to get my dress back and was $50, most places I asked quoted around $60-80 for the same thing. read more

We've been going to Northgate Cleaners for over 20 years and have always been pleased with the service and quality of work. I have had q few specific instances that truly stand out: On two occasions I brought a garment that was stained, and another that had gum on it (still don't know how that happened!), and each time they were able to successfully remove the stain/gum without harm to the garments! Once, I needed a quick turn-around/same day on steaming a dress for an event, and they accommodated my timing. They have mended various items for us as well. They even know our phone number by heart! We'll continue to visit them for our dry cleaning needs. read more

The zipper in my expensive, relatively new raincoat broke, and I was getting quotes of $150-$165 to fix it (basically replace the whole zipper). Northgate Cleaners offered to try fixing it first for $25 and the fix works amazingly well, high quality work, and she was fast- got it back to me same day! I have brought other clothing here for zippers or hems, and she always does excellent work at a very fair price. Very surprised poor reviews. Clearly customer service is not important to this family business! Nor is quality of work, nor attention to detail. Pricing is ridiculous and on top of all that they RUINED a garment and have refused to make it right.....AND THEY WANT IS TO PAY FOR THE RUINED GARMENT'S CLEANING. Without question, the worst cleaners in the area. I recently moved into the local neighborhood and was looking for a reliable quality cleaner. Last Tuesday morning I took in two shirts and a pair of pants. She agreed to have them ready Thursday after 4pm. I wasn't able to make it until the following Saturday morning, but they weren't ready. I had to come back that late afternoon to try again. Nearly $21 bill! I was inclined on that Saturday morning to not leave another 2 shirts and pair of pants, but she agreed to Today (Tuesday) after 4, so I went for it. On Tuesday at 6 I came by. She couldn't find the clothes at first, then pulled them off a rack in the back. They clearly weren't ready; one shirt actually looked more wrinkled than when I brought it in. It never saw an iron. I told I would leave it to repress, and she was adamant it was fine. I pointed out the heavily accordianed wrinkles under both arms and the linear wrinkles Down the arm and asked her if she thought this was OK, and she said "Yes! No wrinkles!" I told her she had just lost a new customer, paid her her $21 and let her know she would be Yelped about this. So now you know. You are forewarned. read more

Dishonest, do not keep word. Took measurements with a ruler opposed to a tape measure tool which is flexible to properly take a person body measurements. Verbally said she would need to add 3 or 4 inches to my dress. Charged $150.00. I returned in 2 weeks as, I was told and she added 5 inches, denied saying 3 or 4 and tried to convince me I lost weight. Re-charged $20.00 to fix alterations, instead of being honest and admit she forgot how many inches to add, messed up by adding 5 inches. Should have fixed/ adjusted dress within the price that was already paid. I do not recommend, Northgate Cleaners for alterations. Honesty and good customer service goes along way! read more

So I went into Northgate cleaners today with 2 shirts. Asked the woman if they could launder them the same day, since there a big sign in their window saying "Same Day Cleaning". She said "No, you have to bring them in by 10:30." She and I looked at the clock. It read 10:25. A pause. Then she says, "No, we can't do them today. You have to bring them in by 10." Wow. Obviously I walked out without giving them my shirts. The message was "I don't want your business, and I'll change my policy on the spot so I don't have to bother with you." I tried this local dry cleaning spot when I needed two of my suits dry-cleaned and pressed. When I first entered, two ladies were standing at the counter having a conversation, both saw me, but neither acknowledged me. After about a minute, they asked what I needed. According to their price chart, a 3-piece-suit costs $25 to dry clean and press, two would be $50. For some reason, they charged me $60, without any real explanation for the price increase. After getting my suits back, they were clean, but the press job was mediocre, with wrinkles still present in the pants and vest. I think for the higher price range and poor customer service, I am going to try and find a different dry cleaner in the area. read more

CRUDE, RUDE AND SOCIALLY UNACCEPTABLE. It is acceptable and forgivable to forget the correct timing on an alteration. However, to be met with an unfriendly, sharp-tongued, unapologetic person is not. The young woman who works there kind. But, the older woman with the mean and unhappy look on her face is another story. Sick of bad -attituded people that own businesses especially when you are a returning customer. No apology (actually, 1st alteration never happened because they forgot), no smile, nothing. Too many other dry cleaners out there that would show appreciation for returning customers. I feel sorry for the young woman working in there because she seems to actually seems to care. read more

I would recommend avoiding Northgate cleaners altogether and finding another location with better service and friendly, professional service and lower prices. The customer service at the desk has been uniformly rude and unprofessional over several months of my attempts to do business there. I have been made to feel I am annoying the ladies at the front desk instead of eliciting their attentive service. Their rude attitude and substandard language skills are both unacceptable and should be avoided. No apologies were made at all for a button having been ripped off by them from my suit coat. Instead, I was abruptly told to come back the next day. The advertised "Same-Day Service" requires a very specific morning drop off - but this is not disclosed to you until you are inevitably there too late for this so-called "same-day service." The prices are notably high here for cleaning that can be done as well elsewhere for lower prices and with cheerful service. My advice: walk a huge circle around this problematic dry cleaner and choose another one - there are many good ones in San Rafael. This is an embarrassment for the Terra Linda community. read more

After using these folks for years exclusively and with weekly regularity, I had occasion to put on a shirt while away on a business trip to find a big stain on the front of the shirt. No problem, I bought a shirt and ironed it at the hotel. When I came back home to Marin, I brought my shirts & suit to Northgate Cleaners and pointed out that I had this one shirt with a stain.,..the Asian lady there looked at me an asked, 'did you wear this?'. I said no, absolutely not. Feeling insulted, I told her that was not a very nice thing to ask of a customer who regularly spends $50-100.00 on each visit to her shop. Still, nothing. No response, dead silence.,...crickets chirping. Why support that kind of arrogance. It might be her, it might be her culture, I don't know.
