I have attended a few movies here in the last year but each time it was weird. Sometimes the only person in the audience. This theatre has so much potential. The cinemas themselves are fantastic, great seats and huge room. What needs improving are the concessions and restrooms. There was no ice for the sodas and the sodas came out warm from the fountain which is not normal. I changed my to a bottle water. The women's bathroom was clean but did not have toilet paper in all the stalls and there were no paper towels. This place should be packed especially since the Palace Point closed in neighboring Roxboro. They need to advertise and reach out to folks who live further north if they are going to make it. read more

I've been goin here since it opened up and this place has slowly gotten worse Over the years! It's kind of odd to be writing a review about a theater in a shopping mall that will be torn down to make room for another development. When this place opened, they had big plans for a bar/restaurant area on the upper level. We've seen many movies here over the years, especially the cheaper matinees. On our last visit, we came on a Monday afternoon to catch the latest James Bond flick. When we entered, we couldn't find any staff, not even behind the concession stand. Eventually somebody came out and we purchased our tickets and got to the theater just as the previews were starting. We were the only ones in the theater. When the movie ended, we walked out and it was like the Twilight Zone -- still nobody around even in the evening when you thought it would be busier. We joked that we could have just walked into another room and seen another movie. Their days are numbered and it seems the staff knows it. read more

Went to see Le Mis with my daughter there after Christmas. First time back there in almost a year. Last time there, was awful: I always use the lobby restroom (cleanest there! The ones in the hall are always filthy) after our movie that night, the usher refused to let me use the lobby restroom. He had it roped off. He was very rude and when I tried to speak to the manager about it, the usher spoke over me and was again rude. The manager didn't seem to care and I left mad never wanting to return. I emailed the manager and never heard back from her. When my daughter and I were there last week, they were still roping off the lobby so no one could use the lobby restroom. The staff behind the concessions are rude also. We have given this theater a lot of business over the years and should not be treated this rudely! Will not be back. read more

A little tricky to find, Northgage Stadium 10 Theatre seems like a throwback to the 80's. Or maybe even the 70's! My friend and I stopped in for the preview of Transformers 3D and the place was hopping. Inside Northgate Stadium is pretty spacious with nice, comfy leatherette seating. The screens are a touch small and I felt the sound system was under-powered compared to certainly IMAX and even Carmike Atlantic 15. Bathrooms were clean and the movie staff was certainly friendly enough. My biggest complaint about this theater is its location which is tricky to find. The entrance is hidden a bit inside a bland facade so we weren't sure how to get into the place initially. Not a big deal if you've been here a couple of times but definitely a bother for a first-timer. Overall an ok but older theater to catch a flick in. Go for the comfortable seats, just don't expect a killer screen or sound system... read more

Northgate has been the closest theater to me for 5 years now. Even given that, I've not particularly liked going to it, but it was convenient so I would do so occasionally. However the way we treated here yesterday ensures I will never support it again. We had tickets for a 8:10 Black Panther showing on Sunday Feb 18th. When we arrive they weren't letting anyone go inside and sit so we wait in line with no explanation. After waiting in line with no explanation, we are allowed to go in and sit around 8:20. 10 minutes after the movie is supposed to start. We sit in the dark theater for another 20 minutes with no explanation of what is happening. No previews or anything. Finally around 8:45 my group gets up and goes to the counter to ask what is the problem. We were treated rudely and made to seem like we were at fault for bothering them about the movie not being on. The person then made an excuse to leave but then never came back so we continued to wait at the counter. Eventually a different person came to a different counter and we were able to finally corner that employee into giving us a refund. He clearly did not want to, and no apology was offered. It was 8:55 and the movie that was due to start at 8:10 had not began. Other customers were leaving the theater to complain and they were also treated terribly and without any respect from the management there. We finally were able to leave at 9:00, about an hour after showtime for a movie that had not started. No apology was ever given, no explanation was given, we were offered nothing for our inconvenience except a rude attitude from every person we talked to. At least we got out refund that we had to fight for and the knowledge not to come back here. Management cares nothing for their customers. I can understand technical difficulties (if that was the problem, I wouldn't know since no one bothered to explain) but the way they handled it and treated the customers there was beyond understanding. read more

Before going into the gritty it is apparent that this cinema is dying with the mall. Where other cinemas are growing north gate seems to lack. Upon arriving there was no one to greet guests. This left one to believe tickets were purchased within. We entered into the literally empty lobby to hear an employee yell across for us to go back to the ticket area and someone will arrive soon. There we waited two more minutes and were greeted by a very tired employee whom really did not want to be working. We purchased our tickets and proceeded down the large vacant hall to our theater which was like a ghost town movie. The second leg of our journey was to find at least one in-ripped chair but to our dismay there were none to be found. Yes the chairs were very comfy but lacked the clean up kept feeling. It so obvious that this theater had the potential to be greater but needed very costly repairs and upgrades to their equipment. Even the projector needed to be replaced since the imagery was spotty. As for the sound its acoustics were stuck in the early 90s. Perhaps the drive-in would be better or Wakefields cinema. read more

I was born and raised in Durham. I remember when the theater first opened. It was a HUGE deal North Durham. This was when Northgate Mall was full of life. Now both, the movie theater and the mall have seen better days. The seats were absolutely terrible. They were very worn out. I don't think people go to this theater for the experience they go for the convenience. (The closest theater is in south Durham.) On Friday, senior citizens receive free popcorn and drink. If you have grandparents, a perfect outing for them! I've taken my grandma and papa to see two movies. They had a good time! read more

I don't think that I've ever left such a poor review before, but after going to this theater several times I felt like I had to warn others! Our most recent experience consisted of watching a movie in a theater with no air conditioning in North Carolina summer heat. We said something to the manager, who said that they knew about the issue and that it was "a work in progress." The time before that we spent the entire movie listening to an infant scream while the parents ignored it. It is too expensive to go to a movie and there are too many other options to put up with this when the management doesn't seem to care at all. This is my neighborhood theater. We go all the time. It is an older mall theater, and it has not yet gone to custom seating and personal foot massages while you wait for the feature, but it is in general fine. Cheaper than many in the area it carries most movies I want to see and it is a comfortable place to go see movies that are best seen on the big screen. That said there are some of the 10 theaters that are better than others. One has terrible sound bleed over from the neighboring neighboring theater. Best to avoid this one (cannot be sure but I think it is theater 9 or 10) one has some speakers that don't work, but overall it is just fine. If you want cadillac, and noisy children, go someplace else. read more

Staff was alerted during the previews and again halfway through the feature and took no corrective action. Audio from adjacent theaters could be heard loudly in our theater. Extremely disappointing. The theater and lobby were extremely dirty - not due to a busy night, rather what appears to be neglect. Our movie was out of focus, and at least seven people went to speak to the staff throughout the movie before giving up on getting the problem addressed and instead suffering through a blurry James Bond. After the movie was over, a group of twenty asked to speak to the manager, and the owner came out. He refused to apologize and called the police to have us removed for trespassing within one minute of listening to the requests for refunds or passes. It's really sad to find this theater in such a pathetic state. I want Northgate Mall to survive, and I love that this theater, like a lot of the other businesses in Nothgate, is independently owned. This businesses is being run into the ground by an owner that fails to address simple complaints from paying customers. I don't know that I've ever left such a bad review on Yelp, but tonight was a night I'd truly like to forgot. I recommend you avoid this theater. What is with all the haters? Ok, so this theater doesn't provide the most luxurious of experiences, but the experience that it does foster is more than just passable. These cinemas are most likely the most modern thing going for Northgate Mall (really not saying much), and to prove it there's even some attempt at "art" out front of the cinemas (which consists of faux marble type blocks arranged amongst a water fountain--it could be pretty cool looking if the wet blocks didn't look like drenched cinder blocks...but points for trying!). The theater is always super clean, staff is notably friendly, and as mentioned in other reviews the seats are tremendously comfortable! Who would have thought a Northgate Mall theater would have such large, spacious, pleathery pieces of heaven parked in front of their screens? They always offer pretty much all of the mainstream movies that are currently making the rounds (this isn't the go-to place for an indie or artsy flick), and the crowds are way less intense than at Southpoint (obviously). Whereas you may run into the occasional obnoxious movie-ruining crowd at Southpoint, I have not had that experience here. Plus with the smaller crowds, you typically get to really stretch out and enjoy those king-worthy chairs at Northgate. Yes, the sound is sometimes a bit off and this theater tends to show a ton of pre-preview ads (you know, the commercials once relegated only to television but now shamelessly shown before movie previews as well), but I think these are only minor inconveniences at best. Maybe I've been lucky compared to other patrons, but I really have never had a negative experience at this theater. Of course, this spot is only really conducive to a stand-alone movie night rather than movie and dinner or drinks as the surrounding area is quite lacking and questionable at best. However, if you're just looking to catch a flick, why not hit up Northgate? read more

This theater gets a bad rap sometimes, but we had a great experience there! Comfy, not crowded, and friendly. BUT the best thing was that I left my purse there... just sitting there in the lobby, for anyone to take... And I didn't realize it until THREE DAYS LATER (b/c I'm a nurse, and I don't take my purse to work). When I stopped by this morning, the manager checked Lost & Found and then checked the locked office, and there was my totally intact purse, full of every single thing that someone could have stolen and used including cards, license, awesome lipstick, a fabulous pen collection, and even my iphone ear buds. Over the past year, I've patronized Northgate Stadium 6 or 7 times. On multiple occasions I've attempted to see a movie and was told at the box office that the "projector is broken" (most recently for Gravity 3D). Yeah, that's annoying right? I've also been twice and watched as a movie was half-projected off the screen onto the side of the wall. Each time I've asked for my money back which was like talking to someone who doesn't speak the same language. (the employee couldn't adjust how the movies were displayed because, yep...you guessed it, the projector was broken!) Northgate Sadium is dirty, falling apart (the water fountains are always broken - as in the actual parts are falling off like someone hit them with a bat, the bathrooms are digesting and always partially out of order - doors are usually missing on the stalls), and the employees are, more often than not, very rude. Northgate Stadium doesn't do much to help the reputation of Northgate Mall. A tip: If you do play Russian Roulette with Northgate Stadium and decide to see a movie here on a Friday or Saturday night, expect the worst - the crowd is rowdy, obnoxious and mostly full of the under 20 set. Loud talking, screaming, fighting at all times. One positive: The seating is very nice. Faux leather and they're large and recline a bit. Bottom line: I'll only go here if I really, really, really want to see a movie and can't go anywhere else. read more

First off, I had no idea that there was a theater concealed within Northgate Mall. I didn't really know there was ::anything:: in Northgate, because the place always looks borderline abandoned from the outside. But yes--there is a surprising enclave of modernity nested within the aging shell, and in that enclave is a movie theater. I'm going to agree with Susan that the theater does have that "old and grungy" feel to it, despite being a venue for first-run movies. The lobby is not at all enticing, it's a little on the dingy side, and there was only one guy manning the ticket window, so even though there were only six or so people in line, it seemed to take ::forever::. As it turned out, there was nobody there to actually take/tear our tickets, so in retrospect we should have just walked on in, stealthy-like. This place gets two stars specifically for the one thing that it totally excels in: seating. The seats were probably the most comfortable things in which I've ever sat in a movie theater (I've sat in a lot of things at movie theaters, some of which were seats). They were pillowy-soft and roomy, upholstered in something leathery, maybe Naugahyde. I like to think that somewhere on an African veldt are countless thousands of slaughtered baby naugas, culled in the first bloom of life for their exquisite hydes so that my butt can be ::totally:: relaxed while I'm watching high-quality cinéma vérité like tonight's 7:20 showing of "Your Highness". read more

Ah!?!..., what in the world? If the consensus is to have a Theater entrance that is unquestionably seen and labeled as THEATER ENTRANCE, I would definitely acquiesce. This was my first time at Northgate Stadium 10 Theater. Once I found my way inside, my Evenings Movie experience seemed to improve. The vestibule is quite capacious and bright. Being greeted almost immediately was nice, apart from the apparent nervousness of the young man who asked "So...What are you here for?". For a well anticipated Movie such as I was seeing, I noticed only two Staffers attending the needs of a line of about 25-30 thirsty and hungry patrons which made me ponder there readiness. Once entering the Auditorium I was greeted by Caramel colored Pleather, high back, reclining seats, which were surprisingly comfortable. The Sound System was in my opinion okay in a pleasing way, not too loud, not too soft and the voices seemed clearly understood without being irritatingly sharp or muffled. Lastly, try to remember bringing something to protect yourself from the HVAC blowing cold air for a couple of hours, if you get cold easily. I rate friendliness of staff 3/5, cleanliness of Theater 5/5 (I did not notice any sticky floors), Movie experience 4/5 and finding the Main Entrance to the Theater 2/5. read more

Not too shabby. Duke students often come here to enjoy the latest films because Northgate Mall is close to East campus. While I think $7 for a matinee in addition to the price of theater food and drinks is rather steep, this is more of an issue with the theater industry overall. I found the box office and concession staff to be generally polite and enthusiastic, which is always a plus. I have had issues three years ago in which a movie would be listed at a certain time on the website but would be shown at a later time. However, I haven't experienced this in the past year that I have been here. My one complaint is that the bathrooms are dirty. The water fountains used to consistently be nonfunctional, but this has been fixed when I last visited. I've had an alright experience with this theater, but there's nothing exceptional about it. read more

The wife and I tried to sneak out for an impromptu date night so we got a sitter and drove the 3 minutes to the theater. I attempted to use a pass that a manager had written for me after I was unable to watch all of Lincoln due to a screaming 3 year old in the theater. The person that refused to honor the pass was the owner and suggested that if we didn't like it he would give us our money back and go to a different theater. the wife and I were incensed at this point and said we would gladly take our money back and never darken his door again. I suggested he pay his website bill and he slammed the cash drawer shut and called the police on on us. The police came and after listening to both sides made him give us our money back and we left. There really is no reason to go to Northgate Mall now. read more

This place was old, a bit smelly, and not even that much cheaper than Southpoint. I go to a movie theater as a bit of splurge for myself (otherwise I'd just hold out and download the movie for free). But what's the point of a splurge if the theater is old and grungy? read more

My review... Its simple, I have been coming to this mall since I moved here to Durham in 2007. Theater was here but it was ran at the time by another company. Over the course of times I have seen this place in bad shape and in amazing shape. And last night was by far the best experiance I have had at Theater. Being a school night I knew it would be slow and when I walked in I was right. The manager was selling tickets and talking with the folks in front of me and I overheard them talking about the last time they had been here. It seems they had a issue with part of the screen being off center and instead of telling someone about it they just sat through the show and last night was the first time they had came back in 3 months. The manager apologized and handed them their money back and said tonight was on him. Just like that. They had a shocked look on their face and I had to ask the manager why he did that. He told me that in the past 3 years he has had so many complaints about things with the mall and the theater, customer service issues, cleanliness, all kinds of issues. And he is frustrated that they had let some many people down. So starting the end of last year they let go of certain staff memembers and reinvested into the theater. Bringing in all digital projectors upgrading the sound system. And they are in the process of retraining staff to deal with people better. I told him I keep coming back because the theater is just comfortable to me. Plenty of room, seats are awesome best I have ever sat in. He told me they plan to redo the flooring in the coming months as well. It makes me sad to see such a great place have such a black eye because of a few rotten eggs. Ill keep bringing them my money as long as they keep up what they are doing. And I suggest if you guys have any issues, ask for Joe and if he is not there find out when he comes back. We have always had great experiences at this theater. The seats are very comfortable and the tiered seating means my view is never blocked. I am short and most theaters don't have enough height difference between rows. I like this theater for solving that. I have found bathroom facilities adequate and the staff average. I think this theater is the best thing about the mall. The floors are not spotless but I never felt like a fly on flypaper. Pretty nice place overall. read more

Had a awful experience here. The owner is running this place into the ground. Went to the movies to see the woman in black 2 at 10pm. Three crying babies (younger than 8 months) were in the theater so I walked out. Spoke to the "owner" Joe to request a refund. He refused to refund my money. He was rude and unprofessional. He told me I didn't have to come back. He proceed to tell me that there aren't crying babies in the theater and then switch his story when he heard one of the crying infants. This is not the first time I had to leave this theater due to poor parenting and crying babies. The interior of the theater is nice however the service is poor. The environment is not suitable for movie watching more like a daycare. Do yourself a favor and go to Southpoint or the many other theaters in Durham. read more

Seating has nice leather seats but the theaters are almost always dirty. Staff is hit or miss but almost always very slow. Show up early if you want snacks because you will wait! I love their popcorn and free powdered cheeses. It is hard to enjoy a movie here due to the large amount of rude people/ teens that have no respect for the people around them. Talking through almost every movie I have seem there. That is a lot of movies! Best bet is mid day during the week. More that once cops have had to come in and remove rowdy teens and adults. If you ask people to please be quiet you will get threaten with violence. I have walked out of movies more than once because of this. I only return because it is closest to my home. Also movie times never match up with times posted on flickster App so beware. Hope it gets better one day because the seats and screens are nice and they have made some updated and repairs lately. read more

I rightfully give the mall a one star, but this movie theater is a hidden gem. We were really skeptical - especially while traversing the early 90s geometric rainbow carpeting, but then we found ourselves in a massive theater with leather seats and only one other party. And this was to see Guardians of the Galaxy when it was newly out. The screen was so much bigger than what you'll find at a typical AMC now. Oh yeah, and tickets are CHEAP. I live down the street and love movies, so I go to this theater 6-10 times a month (closer to 10 now that I have MoviePass). This is exactly what I want in a theater, and I think a lot of the negative reviews are because those reviewers prefer a different kind of movie going experience. Personally, because I am a regular theater goer, I don't want a reserved seat, a full bar, and a full dinner menu with wait staff. That's the kind of stuff that has movie tickets costing $15 or more apiece these days. If you want that in this area, you can get it in Chapel Hill or at Southpoint mall. I am instead looking for a clean theater, good sound, good picture, and hopefully some elbow room without people crowding me in on the left and the right. These must be close to the cheapest tickets in town. On Tuesday's tickets to movies over two weeks old are only $5. With my Duke student idea, I think they are $8 during prime time. I believe matinee tickets are in fact a little cheaper at the other comparable theater in town, the one on MLK Ave. But the primetime tickets at MLK are a dollar more. And the ticket man at the MLK theater wears a gun. Judging by the general vibe of the theater, that is probably sensible. I still remember the day I blurted "Ha! You're armed." His response (said in good humor as a kind of listen-up-young-man bit of advice), "It is your responsibility to see who is armed in any environment you are in." Umm...yea. I guess. Or I could avoid those kind of environments. The best thing about this theater is the staff. They are always polite and professional. Last night, a gentleman I had chatted with before but had not seen for a few weeks asked me how my studying for the bar exam was going and told me he had a relative taking it in DC this summer. Again, I am there all of the time, but I am a shy person and not a Northgate 10 VIP or anything like that. He took time to treat me as an individual and not "random cheapskate who always gets a cup of tap water and whose girl always orders the kids pack [note: at $7 for popcorn, a drink and a gummy candy, it is the best value in the theater]." That interaction is what prompted me to write this review, because these guys and gals deserve credit. I have faced some of the situations on here mentioned in the negative reviews, and it leads me to believe they just didn't handle it properly. For example, last night the A/C was out in one of the theaters. They told me that when I was buying my ticket. They told me that again when they were tearing my ticket. They also told me if it was a problem that I should let them know and we could work something out. I couldn't notice it, so I went with it. Another time the sound was off from the visuals by a second or so. I told them about it immediately. They let me go to any other movie I wanted (well, I didn't try to go to any 3D movies so maybe not any other...) and the manager gave me and my fiance a pass to see a free movie in the future. Finally, I have also entered the theater and found no one at the ticket desk, as one reviewer complained about. I responded in what I assume is the only sensible way one could - you walk over to the employee you see and tell them you want to buy a ticket. I cannot understand that reviewer's confusion. I love Northgate 10, and I dread the spread of these $15 per ticket/$9 per Stella Artois/$18 per hamburger with a side caesar alternatives. If you also feel this way, then I think you will like Northgate 10, and I suggest you come check it out. read more

Paid seven dollars for a matinee, but it felt more like a dollar theater (even if I could've walked right in without paying without anyone noticing). Concession prices are insane, but that's pretty common these days. So are the people talking loudly throughout. The movie started 15 minutes late, and there's no telling how much later it would have been if I hadn't gone out to the lobby to tell someone. No previews. Felt like sitting in an airplane before they turn the air on. The worst part was the sound. At least in theater 3, it sounds like there's only one speaker, and a pretty tinny one at that. My wife said she preferred it to being blasted out like in other theaters, so your mileage may vary. 1 star above minimum for having relatively comfortable seating. read more

Northgate refused to honor the full dollar value of an expired Groupon. At the time it was purchased, there was only ONE movie playing there. By the time we found something we wanted to see, the promotional value of the Groupon (food with the ticket) had expired. It states right on the Groupon that the business is supposed to honor the full dollar value of the purchase for all services (the cost of the Groupon was slightly higher than the cost of two tickets), but the manager refused to either credit us the extra for food or refund the difference. "You have to go to Groupon for that." Dishonest! We won't be going there anymore. read more
