I went to Alamo Drafthouse for a preview of The Devil Wears Prada 2 and had such a good time! The movie was amazing, the acting was great, and as someone who loved the original, it was so much fun getting to experience this one at Alamo. One of my favorite things about this theater is that it's more than just somewhere to watch a movie. You can order food and drinks right from your seat, but I also love all the nostalgia throughout the theater. Between the arcade games, old movies, music and little throwback details, there's always something to look at or talk about. They also have a sit-in area where you can grab something to eat, hang out and actually connect with other people before or after your movie. It gives the whole place more of a social atmosphere instead of everyone just watching a movie and immediately leaving. Such a fun experience, and The Devil Wears Prada 2 was the perfect movie for it. Alamo continues to be one of my favorite theaters! read more

The food is good. But I've been several times and each time my entree has taken an unnecessarily long amount of time to get to me. I place my order at the beginning, and multiple times I haven't gotten it until midway or close to the end of the movie. If their service could improve, this place would be a 5 star. read more

We'd heard stuff about Alamo Draft House and always wanted to try it, and finally took the time to do so. We hit it up for two movies. Mandolorian and Grogu, then Toy Story 5. We went for the full experience, food, etc. Place is a bit out of the way for us, and in an odd location for such a nice experience. They have movie ambiance everywhere, even VCR Movie rental. The reason for three stars has nothing to do with the film experience, that's top notch. The problem is, the cost to quality ratio for the food just doesn't work. I unfortunately for my wallet have a big family, and we brought six people first time and five the next time. $400 night. Also between the two showings pizzas disappeared which was .. odd. They weren't amazing but they were better than 75% of the pizzas made, but again the price points is the challenge. Tack on the 18% delivery charge, and it's bank breaking. I get we gotta pay people but at that price, tacking on 18%, and at that 'meh' quality holy cow man. If we were talking fresh hand made stuff great, but between ordering, grill time, time for delivery, just not worth the $200 in food (or more) and we didn't really get anything outrageous like alcohol or tons of snacks, we're talking drink + popcorn + meal. I want these kind of experiences, but the cost makes this not sustainable for us. food and tickets for six people, second time I trimmed it back as I set expectations ahead of time but still was a multiple-hundred dollar afternoon. When all the TV/Movie press is 'why no one going to theaters' it's bills like this is why, even as a couple we could easily see $70-100 night. Something is broke, not sure it's Alamo's fault either this is a symptom of a larger problem. As you approach the storefront, you see the entire front painted in a Star Wars theme (2nd day of Mandalorian and Grogu). As you enter, a Mandalorian-dressed employee(?) was standing near the entrance. The lobby is set up like an old style video rental store combined with a mini restaurant/bar. The line leading up to the check-in counter (you can buy tickets and reserve seating online or purchase at check-in) is lined with video selections and the ceilings had various movie posters hanging from them. On the other side of the video "store" is the dining area for the restaurant. The check-in counter is shared with the food counter, then further down is the wine/beer/drinks counter. As you enter the back to get to the theaters (apparently 15 of them), there is an entire hallway of doors leading to restrooms/urinals. I can't speak to all of them but the one used was definitely not serviced as the paper towel roll was out of the dispeser and standing up on the wet counter so the towels were sucking up water. The theater is small in comparison to most theaters in the pre-COVID era, but had reclining seats with enough legroom to allow servers to walk in front of you when bringing your orders. The recliners recline at both the feet and head but the head doesn't got back as much as you'd expect so seats nearest to the screen (didn't have a choice but to sit up front) will still have you craning your neck to look up. Each seat also has a small (sticky) table with plenty of space to place your order. Then below the table, at armrest level, is a light pointing down to see the QR code for ordering. Plus there's a cupholder big enough to sit a large drink inside. Overall, it was pretty comfortable and didn't feel as crowded as it was which was almost 100% full for the 2nd day of the movie. The food was surprisingly decent but the pizza had burnt edges. The fries were salted well and were thick enough to retain the potato-y taste. The popcorn tasted fresh and was lightly buttered as requested. It comes in a large metal bowl, enough for 2 people. Overall, the experience was a good one, but definitely needs some cleaning of the tables at the recliners and the bathrooms. The food was pricey as you'd expect from a theater, so no change there from pre-COVID :-) I'd recommend it for the comfort of watching a movie on the big screen. read more

The food has taken a fast turn for the worst. The last two times we've gone the pizza was burnt, hard as a rock, and definitely not the same pizza it used to be. They got rid of most vegan options, all the hatch green chili menu items are gone, the queso is now beer cheese. This place went from class to trash so fast I have whiplash. The bathrooms were atrocious too. People literally were opening doors to clogged stinky toilets and turning right back around due to how nasty it was. Alamo used to be a really special place. Now it's one consistent disappointment after another. I honestly don't know if anyone has been a bigger advocate for this place in all of Raleigh than I have, but I would never recommend it to anyone at this point. I used to be here three times a week. Now the last five times I've been here, something significantly wrong has happened. Everything from 1/3 of the beer menu having disappeared, to the disaster of the QR code system they are using. We love the Alamo chain of theaters and bars. Normally we are huge fans of them. However, this location is sub-standard and a bit on the low end. It feels as if it's trying to be hipster but instead it just felt worn down. The seats were not as comfortable, as other locations. The theaters were warm and stuffy. The food wasn't great or comparable to other locations, and the front room was kind of like an inner city community center instead of a trendy bar and entertainment center. If you've never been to other Alamo's you may not realize what you're missing. I hope the Corporate office will take an interest and help this one be all it can be, the potential is there. read more

I decided to come back to Alamo for a return visit after my first visit was pretty awful. I appreciated the manager reaching out to me and providing service recovery and taking accountability for their staff following my first experience. My 2nd visit was much better. I didn't see any familiar faces from my first visit, but the staff I encountered this go 'round were much friendlier and more attentive. I received great assistance with my ticket order prior to my arrival and had a great meal and cocktail during my movie. This visit definitely changed my mind about Alamo and I hope to receive this type of service (if not better) every time I visit. I'll be back! read more

Normally, I love Alamo Drafthouse but this was by far the worst experience I've ever had there. My family was excited to see The Mandalorian and we ordered the themed beverages. But the galactic was gross and so full of chopped wafers that it wasn't a shake anymore, it was a cold, gloppy, straw clogging dessert that the server expected me to enjoy first with a regular soda straw and then with a dirty spoon that was not wrapped in a napkin. I asked for the shake to be removed from my ticket, they did not. I asked to apply birthday Victory reward, they did not. I finally got the opportunity to check out the Alamo theater. I ordered my tickets at the front counter but you have an option to purchase tickets online for a fee. The front cashier was not very personable. My server was nice & helpful. He explained that once the movie started if I needed anything to push the button and write any requests on a piece of the provided paper. They have an extensive menu with food and drinks. I ordered popcorn. It tasted good and was served in a large metal bowl. Free refills are available with your popcorn purchase. There is an auto gratuity added to your orders in the theater. The theater was clean and spacious. There are several rules when watching a movie here. There is no talking in the theater, you can't use your phone, and you cannot come in the movie late. read more

This is my second review of them. Still absolutely love this spot! I love that they're stricter compared to most theaters about talking and cell phones. And I love that the workers come to you for drinks, popcorn, food so you don't have to miss parts of the movie... I kinda hate the seats though! Cons: The building and every theater smell of mildew bc it's mostly underground and not draining properly. If you have allergies or autoimmune, stay away as black mold isn't far behind. The seat trays are old and the varnish has worn off so they are always sticky. The leg rests are very uncomfortable b/c they are short and only open 45 degrees. Sodas cost $7. High fructose corn syrup now costs more than beer hops or chocolate milk. Let that sink in. Bathrooms are nasty, like a dive bar. 18% gratuity is added which fine for wait staff who have to service a table 5-10 times during a meal. However, it's excessive for cashier/counter service and movie theater staff who only drop off food/drinks. To add insult to injury, they add and additional 5% tip if you don't 'close the check' within 20 minutes of the movie ending. Adding a 23% tip, plus issues listed are exactly why places like this go bankrupt during recessions. I contested the 5% tip with Visa and they refunded it. I always come here however I mixed up the movie times and was about 20 mins late. First off my seats were taken so I wasn't on my end seat that I paid for like I wanted to be, staff said nothing. I go to order food and WATERS, and the employee Hunter took my paper then turned around suddenly and said "sorry we don't serve after the movie starts" which I told him didn't make sense and he proceeded to say you were late. Didn't feel like watching the movie after that. So I approached a very respectful employee Dillon who said that was incorrect he shouldn't have refused service to us and he called him over and Hunter said we were late so he didn't serve us and he didn't "let us in" so therefore we couldn't order. Seemed a bit racist because he definitely served people next to us and they got in about the same time as us, also nobody shows up for the previews , the movie barely started. Also doesn't matter if you let us in, I showed my tickets and we were sat. Dillon was amazing and definitely fixed the situation ! I will come back because of Dillon. Restaurants pay credit card processing fees because accepting credit cards is considered part of the cost of doing business. Not the responsibility of the customer. After I asked for it to be taken off the manager stated he would give me a $10 discount. But things changed shortly after. It was clean and customer service is great. Ugh. I used to love this place but it's gone to the pits over the past year. The chairs are old and don't recline as well as other theaters. The lights under the tables to be able to read menu/see food/see check I've experienced being out in two separate theaters. There is a perpetual stickiness to everything- floors, tables. The servers even said the theater is falling apart, and said they're "trying to find the money" to do repairs. There was a completely missing chair in front of us clearly gone for repairs or something. The menu was updated recently though, and I've never had issues with the food- better than other theaters which has always been the draw, along with fun atmosphere for movie parties. If there's a special showing of something I love I may return, but my regular movie theater will not be this one. But definitely taking time off in hopes it gets fixed. read more

I'm very, very sad that the things that made Alamo Drafthouse in Raleigh the best place to see a movie have all dropped in quality. We've been coming to this theater for years and although we have to drive over 20 minutes to get here, it was the only place we would go to see movies...why? Because it did not allow cell phone use and strongly discouraged talking during movies, and also had great tasting food and very nice, efficient servers. We went to see a movie last night and were disappointed. The food was very mediocre, and still super expensive. The chicken fingers tasted like they were reheated in a microwave, and my husband's buffalo chicken sandwich was an absolute saucy mess and impossible to eat while watching a movie. The menu selection has dropped off considerably as well - there are fewer options in general, and definitely fewer vegetarian/vegan options. We won't be getting meals at Alamo anymore... The worst drop in service by far is Alamo's decision to get ride of their awesome servers who used to take your order, and also the paper ordering slips for ordering during the movie. Everything is now done on your phone, which takes longer, with no personal touch and limited human interaction - things that made Alamo unique and fun. Also, the whole point was to enjoy your experience WITHOUT your phone, and now you are supposed to use your phone to order, reorder, raise concerns about disruptive guests during the movie, and to pay the bill. So why is Alamo still better than other movie theaters? I'm not sure anymore....it plays more obscure, campy films, and is retro and cute, but time will tell whether it's still worth the drive. read more

But tonight I can in and no pen and paper and no menu. Forcing me to do it online. Forcing people to actually use their phones during the movie. The one time I did it online the charged me too much and they added an extra 5 percent gratuity because I closed out the bill half an hour after leaving. I enjoyed seeing the Barbie movie at Alamo. I've had it on my bucket list to visit and was finally able to cross it off today during their 1130 matinee. The staff here are excellent and the vibe is totally retro. They offer plenty of beers on tap and a free vintage video rental service for those of you still mourning the loss of Blockbuster and Hollywood Video. Alamo offers an unmatched dine-in experience. Their menu is pretty extensive with cool boozy milkshakes, brunch and gourmet flavored popcorn like churro ! When I arrived I scanned my ticket with the staff and headed to theater 3. I absolutely loved the old school vintage theme of the venue. Very unique and very reminiscent of Nighthawk theater in Brooklyn New York. But wayyyy better reclining seats. Our waitress was awesome. She provided excellent service. I wrote my order down on paper and pressed the service button. My pineapple cider beer and Royale burger & fries arrived in less than 10 minutes. I kid you not. Everything was really good. I enjoyed the hot fries and pickle. The burger was very filling and well dressed. My only issues were how crowded the restroom lines were, the seats do not fully recline in back, the dining trays at our seats do not move to accommodate you when eating and they don't offer stadium seating. Seats are low. Other than these complaints, Alamo is a cool place to catch dinner and a movie. read more

Came to see Barbie at 8:30 on 7/28 and had a great experience. Our service was great. It does some time take a few minutes to get your items but the staff works fast to get your order in. There were several showings around the same time and the lobby area was also pretty full so I'm sure the kitchen was very busy! The beer list is long includes lots of great local craft options but we opted for the bourbon peach smash and a margarita on the rocks with watermelon purée added. Both drinks were amazing and the prices are the same you pay at a restaurant and the quality was equal if not better. My favorite thing we had was the ninja turtle Bebopcorn, which was amazing and I wish a permanent menu item. The pizza seasoning and crispy pepperonis added a little bit of spice and the flavors were so great. I was also surprised by how much popcorn fits in those bowls. My husband and I first started coming to Alamo fourteen years ago, back when we were still dating. It used to be a fun date that we did regularly. But since COVID, it has gone significantly downhill, and after tonight, I think it might be time to just admit that this place is no longer worth the money and take our business elsewhere. First, some general issues over the past few years: -The bathrooms are always absolutely disgusting. Basically your standard men's room in a bar. Smells terrible, urine on the floor, just generally gross. -A few years ago, they implemented an 18% service fee. They said at the time that this was in place of tips, and tips were no longer expected. Tonight, the little message before the movie reminded us to tip our server. So now it's an 18% service fee in addition to tips. -While the tip/service fee demand has gone up, servers actually do less. Now we have to submit our orders ourselves on our phone. Staff members hardly ever come into the theater, which also means the strict policies they had in the past about no phones or talking are no longer enforced, and there's no one to ask if you have questions about anything. -The food is not nearly as good as it used to be. It's okay, but it used to actually be good. Tonight I paid $17.50 (plus service fee and tip) for chicken tenders and french fries that were better than McD's, but probably not as good as CFA. The "truffle fries" really just seemed like standard fast food fries. -Over the past few years, I would say an average of 50% of the time, they lose part of our order or bring us the wrong food. -About 50% of the time when we go there, the milkshake machine is broken. Now, onto some of the specific issues we had tonight in addition to the above general issues: -We had a gift card, but the new system of ordering from the phone doesn't support gift cards (or cash), and you can't order anything until the payment method is established. There is an option to summon a staff member to discuss a gift card, so we selected that. We got there about 40 minutes early to see the preshow, but after 20+ minutes, no one had come (not even to check our tickets). We didn't want to have to deal with it during the movie, so we ended up missing ten minutes of the preshow to go out and talk to the staff member at the bar. She informed us that we couldn't use a gift card with the phone ordering, so we had to place our order at the bar and pay there, and would have to return to the bar to order anything else. So the whole "order from your seat so you don't have to leave the theater and miss any of the movie" part of the premise is gone if you're using a gift card or cash. (To give credit where it's due, the employee was very warm and professional and did the best you can expect from someone working within a crappy system.) -After we ordered, our food came out pretty quickly, but it took 40 minutes for our drinks to arrive. One of them was just a soda. 40 minutes for a Pepsi. So of course our food was all cold by the time we had drinks. My husband had to actually get an employee to find out if the drinks were still coming, and the employee was pretty terse and dismissive in response. -After getting our drinks, it took another 40 minutes (38, to be precise) to get a refill for the Pepsi. The four refill requests that were submitted after that were all ignored. The price of the Pepsi is only justifiable because you (supposedly) get unlimited refills. We never would have paid that amount if we'd known we couldn't get refills. -The milkshake machine wasn't broken tonight (that we know of), but they ran out of supplies, so they weren't serving milkshakes. -After the movie, there was a line of people to see the manager, so as you might imagine, there was a wait for that too. I think we waited around 15 minutes. The manager apologized and said they couldn't do a refund because we paid with a gift card, but did give us some free vouchers. (The irony that the only way for us to use them is to go through this "paying with a gift card" nightmare again is not lost on me.) To be fair, I'll give the pros too: -Seats are pretty comfy. -The milkshakes are good (if you can get one). -The alcoholic drinks are usually pretty good. In general, there are just a lot of changes at the organizational level that make this a much crappier experience than it used to be. There are some bad eggs, but overall I don't blame the employees. They don't have control over the menu changes or the ordering system, and I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt that the speed and cleanliness issues might be due to being severely understaffed. But I think it's time for us to stop letting nostalgia bring us back and just accept that there are far less frustrating and more enjoyable ways to burn $100 on a date. Cinemark is consistently a better experience for less money, even if their menu is more limited. read more

Alamo is one of our favorite date night adventures! We love everything about it. The atmosphere is so fun; think retro/80's/Stranger Things! The theatres are cozy, clean, and spacious. The service has always been great as well - I am sure it's got to be difficult serving/communicating with customers in the dark but it's always a good experience! I am also impressed with the prices and food. These days everything is a bit much, but the prices of the tickets, drinks, and food always seem appropriate! The food is also always fresh/tasty. My go-to is their California Cab for a drink, and Buffalo Chicken Pizza. We always start with the Truffle Parmesan popcorn - SO good! A few other dishes I have tried: fried pickle spears, Buffalo Cauliflower, House Salad, Chicken Tenders, and Chicken Sandwich. The only dish I did not love was the Chicken Tenders but that could have just been a bad day - way too breaded. Either way, I would give the food 9/10 stars for a movie theatre! Another thing I love is that if you just so happen to not be able to make it to your movie, you can get a refund on the tickets or use the credit for a different movie. We love the Alamo! read more

Nestled in an old strip mall with a vintage 80's vibe and theme, Video Vortex could be special IF more money went into renovations. Furniture and carpet/flooring is dated and smelly. It's the first thing you notice when being seated which translates to an ever present cringe factor throughout your viewing. Staff is courteous and prompt but I don't feel the mandatory 18% gratuity, while not obscene, is justified. I recommend this venue not for the big screen experience but perhaps for a quick cocktail and/or beer at the bar to accompany a bite to eat. This is my 3rd or 4th time visiting but I can guarantee there will not be a 5th. read more

Nice place! My first time going to this theatre. When you enter there are shelves of movies probably about ever movie ever made. They are organized by title, producer or genre - if you can't find what you are looking for just ask the helpful people behind the desk. The movies are for rent (keep for a week at a time) We came to see "Spy Family "(it was really good) You can order food and drinks (full bar) from counter or from the comfort of your seat. The seats are big, individual, power and comfortable. We ordered food and drinks from our seat during the movie- the service was quick and the food was tasty. They add 18% already on your bill. The bathrooms were clean and gender neutral. read more
