I'll start back when I was a 12 year old and my mother took me here to be evaluated for depression…read moreor other possible problems due to my dad's alcoholism. I was a smart child, and I may or may not have had those problems, but I was able to easily manipulate the counselor into telling my mom that the reason for my bad moods was because she would not let me listen to the music I wanted to. She felt that it was too mature for me, but I wanted it anyway. I convinced the counselor that she was underestimating my maturity and they recommended for her to be more lax about her restrictions and convictions about my exposure to this music. Looking back 30 years, I can say that I did have problems, real ones, and I was able to manipulate this incompetent counselor. I am bipolar; if they had looked past my facade they may have caught that early and saved a lot of suffering for me. Now, I take my son there because our family divorced and I think he's having a hard time with it. He's smart too, but has a low self esteem and confidence. I also caught him looking at porn (he's 12) which alarms me. I've tried to instill better morals in him than that, because of what it can lead to. Whether or not you agree with these morals, I expect that when I take him there to be evaluated for these concerns that they should be professional and stick to the clinical facts. Instead, they were more concerned with telling him that he didn't do anything wrong, he shouldn't feel bad, etc. This is NOT their place. No matter what rule it is, if he deliberately disobeys a rule set by me or his mother, he should feel bad about it and he has done something wrong, even if these "professionals" don't agree with my rules. They then proceeded to tell me that there was no concern for his self esteem or confidence. But they don't know him like I do. They don't have the experience in the treatment of mental health like I have over the last 11 years. I daresay I know more than their counselors, and more than some of their doctors because of the various treatments and medications I've had to go through, not to mention all the books I've read, doctors I've talked to, and research I''ve done. So when I say there's something wrong with my son, that could keep him from living a full and productive life, I know what I'm talking about. They paid absolutely no attention to my concerns for his welfare and dismissed them with no valid reason nor explanation. My wife is being treated there. The first doctor she saw was the only one worth a damn, and she left the system because she also was tired of the incompetence of her co workers. She diagnosed my wife with one thing, started treatment and medication, and my wife started to improve. When the next doctor came, she ignored the previous history and notes and treatment changed the diagnosis and treatment to one she thought was more suitable. When my wife started to relapse and get worse than when she was before we ever went there, the doctor blamed my wife for not trying to understand the doctor's opinions. The doctor would hear nothing of the original diagnosis and treatment, dismissing the fact that it was helping. Since then, three doctors have came and left, along with some equally worthless counselors and each time, the diagnosis and treatment and meds have changed. None have helped my wife and some actually made her condition worse. My stepson went there to be evaluated for depression and learning disability. They wouldn't even comment on the disability, stating that was not their area, and that I needed to talk to his primary care doctor (who was the person that referred him to Riverwood in the first place). Of course, my stepson told them he was fine, and that's all the further they looked. So, in summary: they will try to parent your child, instilling morals that they deem fit to make the child feel better; they will change your diagnosis (they have a very high turnover with their staff) and treatment on the whim of every doctor that comes along; they will ignore any history of previous diagnosis and treatment-even if it was working; they will let you and your child self-diagnose and not look any deeper. I know a couple people who work on the administrative staff. They absolutely love their jobs, but even they don't seek treatment at their own place of employment, where they would get a good discount. They go elsewhere to doctors they have more faith in. Even they recommended me to go somewhere other than RiverwoodI They are like the McDonald's of mental health. You are a drive through customer, the product sucks, and you may or may not get what you asked for. In fact, most of their staff that I've met would serve people better by flipping burgers. Go there at your own risk, knowing that you've been told they won't help, and might actually make matters worse for you. You would be better off seeking counseling from the barkeep at Applebees.

I'm a graduate of Northwestern University and was distraught over my outcomes with other psychiatrists. I felt like I didn't suffer through that school to be on disability. Susan is a breath of fresh air. While she isn't in-network with any insurance company, her prices are reasonable (she's worth every penny), and she will work with your insurance on things like getting your prescriptions covered, provide you with documentation if you have out-of-network coverage, and fill out any sort of job-related paperwork that may be needed. I think it's saying something that she keeps her patient population functioning so well that they can continue to see her, even in the rough times. Unlike so many other psychiatrists, to the best of my knowledge Susan doesn't have patients in long-term care facilities, nursing homes, or regularly in an inpatient setting. We're all contributing members of society and she keeps us that way. As psych patients, I believe that's the most we can ask for: to be indistinguishable from people without mental illness. Susan ensures just that. If there's one thing you should spend a little extra on, it's your health. Take my word for it. Make your mental health a priority with Susan Bank. You'll be happy you did!

I was lucky enough to find Dr. Whitfield at UIC. I have had clinical depression for over 10 years and Dr. Whitfield is now my 5th PDoc and I feel he is the best that i've had. Just last week he spent 1 1/2 hours with me and has done a great job managing my meds. Mental illness really sucks, and it makes it that much worse when you don't have access to good quality Medical help.
