I live in an old home built in 1911 that has original knob and tube wiring. We are in the process of finishing the basement and building an upstairs addition. An important part of this investment included a complete re-wire of the home to bring it up to current electrical code. Selecting an electrician for a large project such as this who I have never worked with caused some anxiety. After getting several bids, I felt Joe and his team at Northstar had the best combination of experience, service, and price so I took a chance. The work included: Upgrade electrical panel from 100 to 200A, relocate the panel from the maid floor to basement, and move the exterior meter on the home to better accommodate the new electrical mast. Rewire the whole house Wire basement with new construction/open framing Install custom light fixtures and add outlets Prep wiring and electrical for upstairs addition Northstar was amazing every step of the way, following through on all commitments, keeping us informed, and doing quality work. Most impressively to me, the completed the full house re-wire without needing to cut a SINGLE hole in my lathe and plaster walls to complete the job. Although cuts may have made the job easier, they took the time and care to find a path that avoided need for repairs to the walls. Truly, they managed to rewire some locations I did not think would be humanly possible without cutting in for access. I contacted Northstar Electric as I needed a new outlet and dedicated fuse installed for an appliance I was purchasing. The tech showed up at the appointed time to see what I needed and he was very friendly and appeared very knowledgeable. He said he would provide me with a quote for the work. The appointment was on a Wednesday and he said I would have the quote by that day or Thursday morning at the latest. Well, Thursday came and went with no quote. I contacted the company on Friday afternoon and the person I spoke with said I would have the quote in my email within the hour. It is now Sunday and I never received the quote. It doesn't speak well to the company following through on the work when they can't even get me a quote I requested within the timeframes they said. Count me very disappointed as I heard many good things about this company. read more

Joe has been so helpful. He has a polite personality and was very willing to come back to answer some questions and help us with our new generator. He is very busy so we recommend calling his secretary at the business number. When he's under a house its pretty hard to answer his cell phone and set up an appointment. I had a fairly big job completed by Northstar, and they did a very good job. I had a combination of both indoor and outdoor lights installed, and they were very willing to come back a second time to change some things I wanted altered. I had Northstar out at my place back in August of 2019 to assist with my hot tub installation. They quoted us $1,500 over the phone and explained that was a high end estimate just to make sure they covered everything. When they arrived, they had been there less than 5 minutes before telling me it was going to be closer to $1,800. They were there for approximately an hour and a half, and received $1,800 for this. $600 an hour seems to be highway robbery. None the less, I did let them know that I was interested in receiving a quote on some HVAC installation work I was considering having done. They told me they would call me within a couple of days with a quote for the work I described to them. 2 weeks passed and I hadn't heard from them, so I reached out and was told their HVAC guy is just really busy but that he'll get back to me "within the hour". 3 weeks after that and no return call, I called them again and was again told their HVAC guy will call right away. This was early to mid-September. It is now November of 2019, and I still haven't heard anything at all from Northstar. My last follow up inquiry - which was nearly 3 weeks ago - wasn't even responded to. I will be taking my business elsewhere and do not recommend this company. They may do good electrical work, but their prices are ridiculous and their organizational/customer service skills are non-existent. read more

We had Northstar replace electrical box and an outlet on 3rd of May. When I got home they were finishing up their work .Northstar told my better half what they did. Before they left I went out checked power in garage( no power). Went told Joe from Northstar. They fixed it and left. 10 minutes later went to make coffee outlet didn't work fixture broken. Called Nothstar didn't get a call back till Monday. When Joe (Northstar) called (Tuesday)my wife back she told him what was wrong with outlet and what inspector said about it but Joe wouldn't listen to her. He kept telling her what she wasn't doing right to fix it. When I got home she was almost crying because Joe wouldn't listen to her. Yes Joe shes a Woman and yes she knows what shes talking about too. Finally we got things fixed on the 8th but were still upset. What ever happened to customer service. Mark W. read more

In March 2020 I spoke with Joe on the phone and sent several pics of the work (many small jobs) needing to be done at my house. I asked for an itemized bid (per item). Instead, Jessica (Joe's wife) sent me a bid with one price for all of the projects. I tried e-mailing, calling and texting Joe for the itemized quote he promised. They never returned any calls or messages. I would recommend avoiding these electricians. read more

Where do I even begin? My husband and I lost our long-time electrician, and were devastated when we learned we should do a complete rewire in our home. We started by interviewing electricians, contacted about 15 of them, 9 of them responded, and we were met with, "yeah we can do that, but it's going to cost you an arm and a leg, and we are going to have to tear in your walls and floors and ceilings, and it will take up to two weeks to complete the job". Then we met the Northstar Electric team. Talk about a well-oiled machine!!! Our house is three separate levels, and they conquered the job like you would not believe! They were friendly, approachable, experts, humble, thoughtful, problem-solving, clean, meticulous, affordable, efficient, and I am happy to say that we have met our new favorite electricians! We contacted Joe to give us a quote on replacing the remaining knob and tube on a house we were planning to buy. Joe came to the house, took a very quick look around and quoted us $500 to update it all. We finalized our offer on the house and scheduled a date for his company to come out. On the date of our appointment North Star called us to cancel because their other jobs were taking longer than expected. They did not offer to reschedule us. Instead they referred us to their friend. It took us almost 2 weeks to finally get a call back from their friend. We also contacted North Star multiple times asking about rescheduling. We ended up having to contact another electrical company. North Star's customer service was terrible! Current electrical inc. came out and quoted us $5,500 to replace the knob and tube. They did a very thorough inspection and explained in depth what needed to be done. Do not North Star electric. They are not professional or knowledgeable. read more
