Gas prices are sky high, so I'm looking for a low gas mileage older vehicle with less than 100,000 miles. He gave me the insurance rate lesson I asked for, explaining how different variables would affect my insurance coverage and rates, i.e., salvage title (which limits the coverage I can get) and the vehicle's "symbol rating" (which encompasses the value, gross vehicle weight, and crash tests data). I actually tracked Tracy Lake down from her former employer; she came highly recommended from my friend, and after going over options and chatting with her for upwards of an hour, it was obvious why. She very clearly explained some of the options I was unsure about, and explained some of the differences between the various options. With her help, I got a GREAT quote with options that I honestly thought were way out of my price range based on the various online quotes I had done. Plus, Tracy herself is great! I just converted another policy from All-State to them after All-State rewarded me for 10 years of perfect payments and no claims with a 20% increase. Seriously these folks run the business with old school value added services and I'm still getting better prices when compared to others. Best of all I get to speak to a live person and if I want I can stop by the office. This was my first experience working with an insurance broker, rather than an agent who represented a single carrier. It was really helpful to work with someone who could assess my needs and recommend multiple carriers he felt were the best matches. At the outset, John sent me a spreadsheet with a set of coverages and costs for each of two companies he represented (and that he thought would best meet my needs) and added a column for the companies that were currently insuring me, so we could work together on comparisons between what I already had and what I could get through him. I like to communicate by email, so we engaged in a LONG series of emails, tweaking the coverages for each of his companies so they matched what was being covered by my existing policies, and I could get a valid price comparison. John's flexibility in using my preferred communication method was a big plus. (One of my existing insurance carriers completely refused to engage in email exchanges of this sort. Everything had to be done by phone.) Even more important was his patience in dealing with my continual questions, despite my difficulty in understanding the nuances of insurance. He is just a really pleasant person to work with. Finally, I got email responses back from him almost immediately, so there were no long lag times between my questions and his answers. Attempted to get insurance quote. The agent asked many questions, including who our current insurance provider was, which I declined to reveal. The agent said they would get back to me with a rate. Another agent, the Seattle branch manager, called me back with some "follow-up questions." These included who our current provider was, which I again declined to provide. The agent then said "we are spinning wheels here" and that they would "close my file." I was surprised, and simply asked for an insurance quote as I would very much like to use them for insurance. The agent again asked our current insurance provider, which I again declined, and they repeated that we were spinning wheels and they would close the file. I asked in specific words "So let me be clear: you will not quote me insurance here today because I am not willing to reveal my current insurance provider, out of concern for ethical business practices?" The head of the local office then said "I'm closing your file" and hung up. Not the type of company I would do business with. read more
