If you're considering purchasing homeowners insurance from Liberty Mutual/Safeco, I strongly recommend looking elsewhere. In my experience with one if there third-party claims representative, ALL-Cat my claim was denied at first without any inspection of the property. I was also informed in writing that I had made "threats" during prior communications, with the Adjuster something I completely dispute. After that allegation, all communication was restricted to email only, making it difficult to resolve the situation fairly. The overall process felt one-sided and unprofessional. read more

Every time we have a glass claim, we are told we need to download an app and take pictures of a chip in the windshield! Until I do this, I am told I cannot set a scheduled time to get the damage repaired! Of course, now the starburst in the windshield has the potential to turn into a crack that requires the windshield to be replaced. Meanwhile, I don't receive the required "text," and I am told to call 800-561-0198 to have it resent, only to discover they are closed in the afternoon! Safeco's process and communication for getting a simple glass claim and repair completed are appalling and pathetic! It would seem that after using Safeco for over 30 years and paying them over $5400 a year for insurance, they would provide better service. As their service continues to decline, it appears we need to find another insurance company. Obviously, we do not matter to this company, and after getting the runaround from their phone representatives, they have no interest in us as customers. read more

DO NOT USE SAFECO/LIBERTY MUTUAL I have filed a complaint with the NC Insurance Commissioner's office. Fighting with adjuster this week over our claim. Car total loss, but they want to pay us below value. If they come up another $1200, i'll settle. Adjuster has also stated that they will start deducting storage fees from our claim - can't do that in NC. He also stated their value will not be negotiated. The adjuster has been rude, condescending and very unpleasant. They only want comps within a 100 mile radius & must include vins. Apparently a comp with picture, year, make & model isn't enough and the adjuster told me he was not going to call all those dealerships and the burden of proof was on me. I have sent them over 35 within a 500 mile radius and still won't negotiate with me. Today I resent those comps with the VINS. I'm sure that won't be acceptable either, he will find another excuse. As soon as possible, will be changing my auto, home & a renter's ins policies to another company. THEY ARE HORRIBLE - I WISH I HAD SEEN THE REVIEWS BEFORE WE OK'D OUR INS AGENT TO GO WITH THEM. Slow to respond to anything, if being without the car for extra days and only communicating via unreturned or slow text messages, phone calls that are all AI, & bad phone prompts with inability to reach live responsive agents is for you, then use them! My 85-year-old mother just got her policy for her Lexus and they were going to charge her 13,000 a year for her policy. She drives about twice a week to church into the grocery store and has a perfect record. When shopping around other companies were around the 900 dollar a year range! I was pretty livid and called the company to find out if there was a misprint or some thing wrong with this cost. To which they replied no we just periodically have to up our rates and this is the current policy we offer. I am livid. Buyer beware!!!! I had Safeco for my home insurance. When a catastrophic failure of my shower in the master bath occurred, mind you water was literally pouring from the ceiling below the bathroom, so I called my insurance company. They approved verbally for a mitigation company to come out. The insurance company suddenly removed the adjuster from the claim. Installed a new one who was combative with my contractor. Then came two other adjusters. Safeco denied my claim and stalled for 3 months. They denied the claim for seepage and long term water damage. In their own denial letter they state they could not properly investigate. Yet they gave approval for the tear out. They continue to deny approval. I have affidavits from the restoration company, contractor and a plumber disputing their denial reason. Worst customer service ever!! Do not trust this company!!! read more

We discovered an unknown water leak behind a wall in our kitchen that caused significant damage. We contacted Safeco immediately after the discovery. Despite being loyal customers, Safeco denied the claim, hiding behind the "14-Day gradual seepage" clause. How are you supposed to fix a "gradual" leak that is hidden behind a wall and a stove? Their "investigation" was a joke--the adjuster never came to our house to investigate and relied on second hand information for the claim. The claims representative we had to deal with, Marisa Massaro, admitted that we had no way of knowing about the leak. If you want an insurance company that actually protects your home during a disaster, look elsewhere. read more

I've been listening to my coworker try to get a simple question answered: How do I file a claim online once I'm logged in? She has called over a dozen times. She has spoken with 3-4 people. This has been going on for over an hour. Even when she doesn't get hung op on and manages to speak with a human, none of the people seem capable of even understanding the question. It is not a difficult question. We are claims professionals. We know all the tricks to contacting carriers. Safeco seems completely insulated from ever having to deliver service to anyone unless one of their employees randomly takes it upon themselves to, you know, do their job. Horrid company. I had a sudden flow of water under all my flooring. Water seeped up through the planks in the floor over a couple hours. Because the pipe used in my house from 32 years ago is prone to cracks, and there had also been a slow leak, they denied my entire claim. I signed up with them because Nationwide my insurance company for over 35 years had raised their rates on my cars and my cars are much older and I have a completely clean driving record with no accidents except being rear-ended by Pizza Hut driver . Safeco treated me like dirt when I had hail damage on my roof they sent an inspector who's famous for not approving people who was on my roof for about 3 and 1/2 to 4 minutes according to my camera . Everybody around me had hail damage and got a roof but I did not and recently Safeco said in a letter if you don't get a new roof in the next 2 months then we were not going to insure you anymore. After being insured with them for 8 months, they canceled our policy because we didn't provide proof of low mileage, although they never requested it from us or our agent. What a scam! I'm sure their plan was if we filed a claim, they would have denied it based on that. Plus, both my agent and I called repeatedly to try and work this out. Recently dropped my home coverage with Safeco. The premium jumped by 40% from the previous year despite having no claims for the whole duration that I was with them. My insurance rep indicated that Safeco had also raised rates sharply for her other customers. I tried to see if bundling my auto and home insurance would make a difference. It did significantly cut the home rate, but the auto rate was not competitive enough, so I changed carriers. SAFECO is the company I had homeowner and automobile insurance with. A tornado came near our house and the wind ripped shingles and an electric attic fan from the roof. There was spotting on our ceilings in just about every room. I had a privacy fence blown down. With all of that damage, SAFECO wrote a check for approximately $4500. The roof cost me $15,000 to replace. SAFECO said it could be repaired but three different roofing companies said they would not guarantee their work if they repaired it because they said it would leak if it was not replaced. The fence was repaired after spending $5,000. The ceilings, I have yet to repair. That will cost too. Pool furniture was blown into the pool, which landed on our Polaris pool cleaner damaging it. That's going to be another $1,000 to replace. Take heed! SAFECO will not pay claims as they should. They will do everything they can so you get the least amount of money on a claim. They have the attitude, "Sue us! We don't care!" Of course filing a lawsuit would mean paying a retainer with the lawyer getting 50% of whatever you get, if you win. Steer clear of SAFECO and its parent company Liberty Mutual. They are no good. After my roof was replaced, I called another insurance company so I could switch. My new agent asked several questions, as they all ask, age of the home and so forth. He thought it was a really funny thing when he asked, "How old's the roof?" I had to work against objectively lowball valuation of the totaled vehicle, adjuster going MIA for weeks before completing the claim, denying re-valuation of vehicle with public data for no reasons, and only offering rental car for 3 days leaving me without a car for a month. I cancelled my renters insurance on 10-17-25. I signed the documents and everything. Then on 10-20-25 they still charged me out of my account. They basically stole from me. They wouldn't refund to the card that they stole the money out of... instead they sent a check that takes 7-10 days to receive. Will never return to Safeco and liberty mutual again. Safeco canceled my home owners insurance over questions not asked by an employee. When I got a check in the mail saying my policy was canceled and a nightmare. They had no desire to do any rushing to fix of not having mortgage insurance on my home that is financed. I'm switching insurances for both home and auto and would not recommend this company to my worst enemy. I called Saturday and no one could fix the problem they said it would be days before I would know if they would fix the problem. I was in a very minor fender bender where the other driver was 100% at fault and yet my insurance company Safeco is arguing with the repair shop on labor rates and denying a new bumper. I was with Safeco for 2 years. When their rates went way up, I switched insurance companies. Well, right at my 6 month payment with the new company, all of a sudden there's a collection notice and my credit rating dropped 60 pts (causing my renewal with the new company to go up $150 for the next 6 mos). After investigation it was Safeco who turned me over to collections for non-pymt of insurance premiums!! I never received anything from them via mail, email, text, etc that there was any balance due. Seems way too coincidental that this happened right at the 6 mos renewal with my new company. I was able to straighten it out (seems they didn't cancel my ins until 30 days after I verbally notified them) with Safeco, but not after spending 2-1/2 hours of my time and lots of frustration. I can say I'll never use Liberty Mutual/Safeco again and will make sure I tell everyone I know about my experience. read more

We filed a home insurance claim back in July due to storm damage, and they sent a local business to do an appraisal and quote the work being done. At that time, we felt confident that the job would be done well thanks to the sales rep that was at our home. We were promised everything we were concerned with would be handled. The local business they sent to us was completely disappointing, and SafeCo did nothing to help us. They were hardly responsive, did not alleviate any of our concerns, and we still don't have a few items from the claim done that we were promised. The SafeCo agent we were assigned was Paul Mathes. The local business they had do work showed up randomly and did not communicate with us at all. They left a mess of our yard and driveway, leaving nails and trash everywhere, left our gate open, and even broke our brand new fence gate with nothing done about that. The roof looked terrible when it was completed, did not look professional at all. Trying to get ahold of anyone to address our concerns has been the most difficult process ever. It is now 6+ months later, and we have not had some of the work done that was promised. We would not recommend SafeCoo to anyone looking for good quality insurance. read more

I would give zero stars if it was an option. We had Safeco homeowners insurance and were offered a discount if we switched our auto coverage to them. About a year into coverage, my wife backed into a tree limb on our property and broke a side window and dented a quarter-panel. The repair estimate Safeco gave initially was ridiculously low, but the body shop we took it to worked with them to cover the cost. So far, so good. Several months later, we got a termination letter from Safeco stating that due to this accident, we were deemed too high a risk for auto insurance. Our driving records are spotless with no tickets or accidents. We are in a very low risk age group and this is the only claim we ever made with them. This incident involved no other vehicles or drivers, no property damage, and fairly minor vehicle damage. They literally dropped us for backing into a tree limb at 3 mph. Of course after that, we dropped them for our homeowners insurance. They have gotten all of my money that they will ever get. Sure, they may offer cheaper rates than other insurers, but they will drop you like a hot potato if you have the nerve to file a claim. Better to pay a few bucks more and not have to deal with that nonsense. read more

I was in an accident where the at-fault driver had Safeco insurance, and dealing with them has been a complete nightmare. It took 8 months for them to finally total my car, and the payout was far below the actual value. On top of that, I had to pay out of pocket for parking fees at the body shop because they ignored me for 6 months--no calls, no responses, nothing. I had to hire a lawyer just to get them to do their job, and even then, they failed to pay taxes on my new car, leaving me with unexpected costs. This entire process has left me financially drained and beyond frustrated. Absolutely horrible customer service, zero accountability, and a complete disregard for policyholders and accident victims. Safeco - Liberty Mutual = Horrible, and that's being nice - We suffered a fire sprinkler pipe burst and it ran for days, ruined everything but 2 walls. 80% of the house was gutted and needed to be replaced. The adjuster described the replacement materials so poorly no one would believe they saw our home. It took well over a year to get to a number of about 60% of the Bid cost. They kept stating that their Estimate was all they could pay on and refused to recommend a contractor to do the work for the estimated price. They then cut off the Additional Living Expense 5 months prior to the work being completed as they felt this was what time it should have taken. Had they paid for the plans and permits required it could have been completed in that amount of time. But they took over a year to agree to pay prior to us being able to get these done for us. They reimbursed us for our additional electrical consumption, but took our owned solar system credits as there own by deducting these from the amount reimbursed. The horrific treatment and run around was one of the most emotionally damaging experiences I have had. We still have not been paid in full for all the costs to rebuild the damages back to the same they were. Safeco - if you can stay away run as fast as you can. Very unhappy with Safeco, who has been insuring my home for the past 6 years. I received an email saying they were cancelling my insurance policy because of algae/mildew/moss/mold on the roof. They sent a report that had poor resolution aerial photos, showing one photo that looked fine and a second photo that had red streaks, without providing an explanation on why two photos taken on the same day would be contrasting. They requested that I have the building re-roofed! I had my maintenance man go up on the roof and take photos, and the roof was in great condition. Absolutely terrible service. read more

Hi. This is Louise Sullivan. I have Safeco (Liberty Mutual) Insurance through the Crest Insurance Agency in Tucson. Crest has been very helpful in setting up my insurance for me. I now have damage to my roof from hail and storm, and the Claims Adjuster William Parker stated it also had other circumstances associated with the roof. I was told by Mr Parker that the roof would be totally replaced in the amount of $xx. Instead, the settlement received was in the amount of $x; half the size of what was told to me. My happiness over Safeco is now very sad. I am assuming since Safeco Insurance is a very reputible company, and recommended to me by Crest, that this issue will be solved and resolved. We have been policy holders for homeowners, auto, and umbrella coverage for 21 years with Safeco/Liberty Mutual. We filed a claim after a small fire. Our belongings were loaded in a truck to be cleaned due to smoke. That was 45+ days ago. We cannot get an answer from Safeco/Liberty Mutual, either from our local agent or national office, so we can get our belongings back. This is how two 70 year olds are living now.
