Due to the economy and real‑life situations outside our control, we've had no choice but to store two households' worth of belongings here for the past 2 1/2 years. During that time, our rate has gone up by $50-$80 every six months. Our bill is now $420 a month, which is simply not sustainable for any family trying to stay afloat. At this point, we're genuinely worried about losing everything we've stored because we can't keep up with these constant increases. I've tried to resolve this through every proper channel -- the facility, the district manager, and multiple escalations to corporate -- and corporate has not responded to a single call or email. My payment was due on the 18th, and I even went to the facility in person because I have an active escalation pending. Still no acknowledgment or consideration from corporate. I also filed a consumer complaint with the Washington State Attorney General and have not received any confirmation or response from Extra Space. This has been one of the most stressful and disappointing customer service experiences I've ever dealt with."**

As a loyal customer for over two years, I feel compelled to share my experience so others can make…read morean informed decision before renting here. My rate started at $78/month, increased to $147/month, and then jumped to $247/month -- more than triple my original rate. While they provide a month's notice before increases, the hikes are significant. When I negotiated, they offered $220 -- still far above market rate for the same unit size at competing facilities. Other long-term reviewers here describe similar experiences. The problems go back to 2025 when I reached out multiple times via phone and email, simply asking about rate options. My calls went unreturned and emails ignored until I followed up repeatedly. When I finally spoke with facility manager Melissa, she stated I had previously spoken with a staff member named Janelle on a specific date, which was not accurate. When I requested written confirmation of rates, she told me all discussions must be by phone only and did not provide anything in writing. When I took notes during our call, she accused me of trying to catch her and ended the call. What makes this particularly frustrating is the inconsistency. Melissa had previously encouraged me to use their online promotions to secure a better rate, stating, "We want you to stay at Extra Space Storage." I had done exactly this before without issue. However, when I secured a new unit at their advertised promotional rate of $138/month and requested a floor reassignment via chat -- something a representative confirmed was possible -- the interaction became confrontational, and I was told this was "unfair." Within minutes, my fully paid lease of $602.75 was canceled before I ever took possession of the unit. I initially received only a partial refund of $414.00 and had to escalate to corporate with a formal written demand to recover the remaining $188.75. For additional context, the New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection filed a lawsuit in February 2026 alleging bait-and-switch pricing practices and significant rate increases involving Extra Space Storage. (Public source available on nyc.gov.) Both the property manager and district manager have been referenced by other reviewers for similar communication issues. Corporate responses I received were automated and did not resolve the situation. Read every review. Document everything in writing. Two years of loyal, on-time payments earned me nothing but a tripled rate, a canceled lease, and a fight to recover my own money. https://www.nyc.gov/site/dca/news/016-26/dcwp-sues-extra-space-bait-and-switch-pricing-vermin-infested-units-junk-fees-other

On that note- They have 4 carts you can only use when they are actually in the office. They have inconvenient hours if they are even available during those. They leave and lock up for breaks, lunch, for new customers to take them through the process to unlock all the doors and how the elevators work, go to the bathroom, do maintenance etc. So good luck planning your move! Hand carrying items from outside the building through 2 locked doors, a locked elevator and long, long maze like hallway because they aren't there until 9 and before 6 and the carts are locked. Those "convenient " perks they talk about are useless. Facility opens at 6am but you can't get a cart until 9. The unloading area- 3 cars can fit and people can be there for hours. Secure facility great- not so great when you have to punch in long codes through 2 doors and an elevator every time you bring something in. *they hold your license to get the cart* to get it back planning on allowing 40 minutes to get it back. I've had to leave mine there because I couldn't wait around. There are zero garbage cans at the facility. This encourages people to either leave broken, leaking items etc either randomly at the facility or in your unit. I have an 8x10 on the 4th floor in the furthest corner and I had to make 10 trips there because of all of this. They also don't tell you there is a restroom. It's on the first floor in the far corner. No signs. This facility is ridiculously big. You would think with all that money they are charging for? units they would be able to splurge and put a bathroom on every floor so you don't have to abandon your items in the hall for the 5 minute walk to go to the bathroom. Or take a chance of losing a couple carts for the convenience of their customers. Add another employee! Provide a dumpster! Extend your hours! Lower your prices! The cost of running a storage facility is minimal. Definitely giving notice in the morning and I better be getting back the money they should not have taken from my account.
