Cut to today: they are my favorite yarn shop as a local. It's also the farthest from where I live so I don't get to visit as often as I would prefer. The shop is inviting and well laid out. The folks working there are friendly and helpful, and it's smack in the Alberta Arts District which is one of my favorite neighborhoods. Close Knit has a fantastic variety of yarns from basics to luxury ensuring that no matter your price point, you will find something delightful. They're one of the rare places that carries Noro Kureyon which is one of my favorite yarns and they offer it at a fair price compared to other yarn shops I've been to in the area. They are my go-to yarn shop for objective purchases and subjective yarn wandering. :)

I've been slowly making my rounds to the many new yarn shops since we moved here last summer. I was excited to FINALLY get an opportunity to stop in during our mom-and-daughter Galentine's Day adventure. There was one person working there, and they were so sweet, friendly, and helpful. That alone would bring me back again and again. Secondly, the space is airy, well-lit, and delightfully organized, which is very conducive to knowing exactly where to get what you need and also lends itself to relaxed meandering when you don't have a specific need, BUT as all yarn-crafters know, the yarn will let you know you need them. I don't make the rules. There's a fabulous selection of premium, affordable basics, natural, and synthetic fibers. The knitting needles and crochet hooks are behind the counter, so you will have to be intentional here. In places where I don't necessarily need any tools but see one, I tend to buy it. (Please respect my privacy on how many size 6 16" circulars I have purchased.) So, in this regard, Fiber Rhythm is saving me (and my pocketbook) from myself! In addition, there are dyes, several kits, and a winder to self-wind your purchases. To be honest, there was much, much more, but I had parked in a spot where I had to move by 4:00 pm, and we got there at 3:49 pm. This was a literal "speed run" through a yarn store. I look forward to visiting again when the parking godz don't require haste.

My daughter and I have wanted to visit Starlight Knitting Society since we moved here, and finally,…read moreafter many months, we managed to check them out on the first day of the 2026 Rose City Yarn Crawl. Though they were packed with other shoppers, the staff was welcoming, friendly, and helpful. We each purchased a few skeins of yarn, and my daughter picked up an adorable claw clip in the shape of a ball of yarn with knitting needles. There was a wide variety of yarn, from cost-conscious basics to mid-priced natural fiber staples, all the way to sumptuously decadent fiber yarns at a luxury price point. Their needle selection was robust, their notions and other celebratory yarn-goodies plentiful as well. There is literally something for everyone here! They also have a wall dedicated to cross-stitch/embroidery with super fun kits. I know I missed mentioning something since it was stuffed to the gills with people, and if I'm honest, I was a little overwhelmed, but we look forward to returning soon for a more leisurely amble.

First of all, the staff were some of the nicest people I have ever met. They went above and beyond to make me feel welcomed and were happy to answer any questions I had as they came up. They were also extremely friendly and seemed to want to get to know me, what projects I'm working on, and what I was looking for. Second, the selection and prices were unbeatable. Starlight Knitting Society had so many different yarns and crafting accessories to choose from at very reasonable prices. Despite wanting to buy everything in the store, I left with a Starlight Knitting Society tote bag (my new favorite bag to carry my knitting projects in) and a tension ring. I really wish I lived closer to Starlight Knitting Society. I'll definitely be back the next time I'm in Portland!

I'm very new to knitting, and this was just what I needed. I got some important tips, and learned something called Tink! Previously I came in with my first ever project looking for some tips. Two ladies at the front desk took a lot of time to help me out. I also left with some nice little tools that really helped me out. Friendly staff, and it looks like they have a big selection for a small space. Definitely come by and check them out, and bring your project if you need some help. Last week I was having a problem with a pattern I was working on, so I drove out to Designer Yarn to ask Sherri for help with it. Even though I hadn't bought the yarn there (got it at Oregon Flock and Fiber last year), Sherri helped me figure out what I'd done wrong, which I really appreciated. That kind of customer service will keep me going back there over and over. Sherri does a good job of keeping up with what's new and popular and the variety of yarn that she carries shows that. Now she carries spinning fiber as well! You can find good quality yarns at Designer Yarn no matter what your budget is, and Sherri lets you browse to your heart's content. She doesn't hover, but is always available to answer questions. Anytime I go to Sandy, Designer Yarn is on my list of places to go. Highly recommended!

I can't sew...well, I couldn't sew. Had a cheap little machine I bought secondhand and couldn't…read morethread the bobbin, couldn't thread the machine, literally didn't know what the dials were for. After numerous failed attempts at teaching myself, I booked a private lesson with Colleen. Over the course of two hours, she taught me all about operating my machine, basic stitches, entry-level sewing tools, and I even made a drawstring bag! She was kind, patient, encouraging, and a FANTASTIC instructor. I can't wait to take some of her group classes!! The store itself is great. Lots of sewing supplies that are of higher quality and will last you a while. The people who work here couldn't be nicer or more helpful. If you feel intimidated by learning to sew, this is a perfect spot to start learning. Even if you're already a great sewer, you'll find everything you need here. They have a spacious section in the back where they teach group and individual classes; you can also rent a desk/machine if you need some higher end equipment to work with. This place is open, tastefully decorated, and inviting both in ambiance and by the sense of community that is welcome to all. There were knitters of all ages coming in, including moms with children. I have been trying to find someone to do the repair and have no luck. Finally I decided to look up knitting shops on Yelp, hoping someone will be able to help. I called Nirto Knitters, and a lady picked up the phone quickly. She was upbeat, friendly and sympathetic. She explained almost no one would do the repair because it always looked "not great" (kinda like a thick patch). However, she recommended the "needle felting" method. I quickly googled it and it looked doable for small holes! Oh I really hope it will works! For this experience, I recommend NItro Knitters for anyone who need knitting guidance.
