This is a great sandwich place on the southern end of downtown Rhinelander. It could qualify as a "dive bar" as the building started out life as a hotel across from the old Chicago & Northwestern Railway depot from the salad days of Rhinelander, when the logging town was served by four railroads. The lumbering is long gone, although the paper industry is still alive and well here, and the railroads are all but gone. (One rail line still serves industry here.) Although the railroad is gone and the hotel has been converted to apartments, the old tavern is still in operation. And it looks the part - the old bar and back bar remain as it was in the old days. You can get what you'd expect in a dive bar but even better is product from the Keweenaw Brewery, up dere in Da Yoop, hey. Sidle up to the bar and order a Widowmaker. Seating is on an elevated stage, one step up. You'll be sitting at a table that looks like it came from Grandma's and probably did. Atmosphere? There ain't any. Food? Just like Grandma used to make! Homemade soup, and hand made sandwiches while you wait. You could say the sandwiches have a college degree because they are all PhD - Piled High, and Deep. Unless you're really hungry, you'll probably be taking some of it with you. Don't miss the kayak tied to a tree! You don't see that very often, at least, when you're sober. read more

Enjoyed our first visit to Northwestern Hotel & Lounge - Justin our bartender, a better looking version of Jay Leno was friendly, courteous and patient with us on our first visit. Gladly explaining the menu, etc - he made it a fun visit and the Hemlock sandwiches were delicious. I tried the wild rice soup as well, it was great. This place has some serious history (I'd love to know more) that dates to the early growth of Rhinelander as it is located directly across from the Railroad station (non-operating) as the tracks were removed some 30 years ago. If you're looking for new and fashionable, this isn't the place for you - however, if you want to go where the locals go, eat like the locals, and soak up some of the historic ambiance, then the Northwestern if for you. Give it try, I think you'll enjoy it. Also, if you find out the origin of the name for the Hemlock sandwich - let me know, I'm curious. Enjoy read more

We used to get delivery to my work so I was familiar with Northwestern. After 15 years of living here, finally ate inside. Simple, affordable food that is good. We love the Bloody Mary, French onion soup on Saturday, onions rings, curds, Reuben, taco salad..... kicking myself for not visiting sooner. Love it is original old quaint decor. Stopped in Rhinelander WI for lunch at the Northwestern on Saturday 5/9/15. Ordered a roast beef au jus sandwich with chips. Price $7.25. Sandwich was very good. Hotel bar atmosphere was old-time tavern. Nice little small town restaurant. I'd stop there again. read more
