Once there we were told that the website is owned by someone else and the new owners couldn't make changes and no German food. Not sure if these new owners are very experienced in food service. Little things like the awkward way they served the food and drinks (hand over the top of the glass) seemed to suggest they're new at this Nonetheless, the food was excellent! We came here around 5:15 pm on a Sunday. We were seated immediately, there were only 2 other tables. We ordered cheese curds which I felt were good but extremely greasy. My salmon was okay, I didn't like the garlic sauce on it. My entree came with a salad or for $1 more a soup. My husband's Mac and chicken was amazing. I should have ordered that. We ordered cheesecake for dessert. It was pretty good, but not worth the $10 price tag. I usually pay $7-$8 for a cheesecake of that size. Large selection of wine and beer. read more

You should come in and support this place. There aren't a lot of places like this in the Northwoods. The food was great. I had the veal schnitzel and my wife had the salmon. It was prepared to order and delicious. The highlight was the Bruschetta appetizer. This was FANTASTIC! Not your normal bruschetta that you find everywhere else. Cheesy, balsamicy goodness. Anyway, we enjoyed our servicer Kat. She had great recommendations and a wonderfully positive attitude that is seldom found these days in the food industry. We've been going to Black Forest for years. It's an absolute must if you're visiting Three Lakes. Tonight we had the Katsu Curry and the Bruschetta, which is relatively new to the menu. So happy this place opened up again. Food and cocktails-amazing! My only criticism-the big signs ALL over the bar stating that you could not sit at the bar unless you were 21. It's a supper club in the Northwoods​ of Wisconsin- give me a break. Not a fan of being told 'No' my 16 year old couldnt sit at the bar with us while we have a before dinner drink. Honestly, its a deal breaker for me and will probably frequent other establishments instead as a result. This is one of my favorite places to go "up north". I've never had a bad meal or bad service. I can't even believe I've never written a review for them before. If you love a good pork shank, like I do, this is definitely the place to go! They are huge! I always order them with spetzel instead of the potatoes they come with. That's just a matter of preference. I love spetzel. The service is always down to earth friendly. Families, elderly couples, and everyone in between, enjoy eating meals here. This is our go-to restaurant. German-style food is delicious. Specialized drinks are unique & delicious. The subdued lighting and decorations create a relaxing atmosphere. We decided to try black forest grill because of the online reviews. We were pleasantly surprised when we came in because of the interesting atmosphere and architecture. The experience continued with the menu: extremely traditional German dishes along side of traditional Northwoods and American Biestro favorites. We decided try to try the perch fish fry - which turned out to be amazing, best in the Northwoods. The German cuisine was thoroughly authentic and compromised nothing. Really fabulous time! Service was awesome. The food was wonderful. I got the salmon, which comes with a salad. I asked that they serve it all together, and I kind of made a salmon salad. The spinach was also delicious. My sister got some sausage thing that I can't spell, but she said it was to die for. The sour krout was adored by all. Drinks are pricey, but they were well liked. I just had iced tea, but it was even surprisingly good. Our server was attentive, personable, and timely. Everything was accurate and cooked as requested. This place is outstanding! Haute cuisine in northern Wisconsin. The owner is a highly awarded chef from Germany who worked in upper end restaurants in Atlanta before buying Black Forest at an auction. The food is simply outstanding. Nothing else like it in the north woods. Fantastic restaurant! The menu is a perfect mix of authentic German and pub classics. We visited the Black Forest twice during our vacation in Three Lakes. The fish fry (North Sea style) is the best we've ever had. The salads are delicious and full of creative organic vegetables (like organic pea shoots) locally sourced from Evergood Organic Farm in Sugar Camp. Salad protein is perfectly cooked and seasoned like it would be for an entree. Plus there is an additional family restroom to ease travel with children. read more

Being from Three Lakes, my family has fond memories of the Black Forest: from my parents working there, and a few family friends being owners of the place-- I admittedly have some high expectations. My family went there last night, on a Monday (the hardest day to get a great dinner in the Northwoods) and were delightfully surprised by all the awesome German food offered on the menu. We ordered a mix of things and we LOVED the Pork & Beef tips with spaetzle. The German red cabbage that came with the wiener schnitzel had incredible flavor, and I stole most of it off of my in-laws plate. The potato pancakes were also really good. Overall: the new ownership didn't disappoint. All the German food we had was great. All the non-german items were ok. The beer menu was great, and had more local options which I was very excited to try. Also: service was quick and nice. FYI: Kitchen closes at 9 on Mondays. read more

It has been over a year since my last visit to the Black Forest and my wife and I thought we would try it again. As I said in my previous review I used to love the Black Forest and something happened last year to change my opinion of it. So....here we go! So we arrived and were seated right away as always since we eat early. Honestly I wish they were opened earlier than 4:00 PM (for if we wanted to go there for lunch) but that is not the point. So the wait staff was friendly and took our drink orders immediately. Already a step up from last time. So we ordered out food. As always..the Nachos were on our mind and they came out fast and were just as good as in the past. As for the entree both my wife and I got the Hot Roast Beef Sammich (Italian Beef, French Dip, or whatever). It came out in a great and timely manner and was delicious. Maybe one of the best meals I had all weekend. Kudos to the people at the Black Forest...not only was the service improved but the food quality took a huge step up...or back to what it used to be. Yay, this place is really good! The inside is very cozy and the service was great. I'll start with the one negative piece - the salads we got with our meals weren't very fresh. My boyfriend's had some brown lettuce in it, which should never be served to customers. It was pretty disappointing. Okay, onto the positive - the main entrees. I have traveled pretty extensively around Germany and eastern Europe, and I was very impressed with their recipes. Everything was extremely authentic. My boyfriend had the Rahm Gulasch mit Spatzle, and I had the Winzerpfanne Geschnetzeltes. The Gulasch was cooked perfectly - the sauce was super rich and perfect mixed with the spatzle. My dish was also delicious, almost like a German style pasta dish. The sauce wasn't too rich which was good because the portion was huge! I would eat both of these dishes again in a heartbeat. The food here was terrific! We came here for dinner and most of us either had some sort of steak or stuffed chicken or salmon . It was high quality meats ...very tender. Excellent German restaurant! The Wiener Schnitzel and french fries were perfect. My 85 year old mother-in-law said the Kaiser burger was the best she has ever eaten. She was a world traveler and has had the best in the past. My family has a lot of food allergies and the waitress was patient and perfectly accurate. No one had a bad reaction to wheat or dairy later that night. The chef had to have used perfectly clean pans for just their meals so there would be zero cross contamination. The homemade salad dressings were excellent. The service was excellent. They have all of the items needed for a German restaurant: German bier, atmosphere, architecture, history, pictures, etc... I have been to Germany over a dozen times and have eaten at most of the German restaurants in North America. The food at this restaurant is as good or better than ANY German restaurant I have ever been. I don't take the time to write reviews like I should since I travel extensively. I have been in more upscale restaurants than this but have NEVER had such an attentive & polite gentleman as Tim-rare find! My sister & I opted for German food (of course) and both dishes were super tasty. Short braised ribs were cooked & seasoned perfect. Large portion. Rouladen was flavorful but did have a few dry areas in the middle but the red cabbage & gravy took care of that! Dumplings were an awesome comfort side to the meal. Please be aware this restaurant is under new ownership since I last reviewed it. I miss some of the old menu items such as the ranch dressing, Steaks, and burgers. The menu is now German. I highly recommend the Schnitzel and pork dishes on the menu. The mashed potatoes are amongst the best I have ever had. They did a nice job on the remodel and now have air conditioning. read more

Last Friday night, my wife and I along with my sister and her husband had a throughly enjoyable experience at the Black Forest. We knew the place would be very busy and it was. Friday night fish in Wisconsin! Arrived around 7:00 PM. They suggested a drink at the bar and happily we followed their advice and were very happily seated after finishing our cocktail. We had a very bright waiter/server whose real vocation is in teaching. This guy is a very successful transplant from California. His help with the menu allowed us to choose between Friday night fish and the German cuisine successfully, keeping everyone pleased.
