This is a large, busy practice. It's large and busy because they do good work. The staff seems to take good care of the dogs, cats and various other animals that pass through. They [quietly] do a lot of wildlife work for no compensation and little to no fanfare. To people who complain about the cost, the fees are what they are. They are neither the cheapest nor the most expensive for routine visits and extra-ordinary surgical or other types of procedures. I feel they provide a good value for top notch Vet care. read more

Dr. Justine has a magical rep-or with our almost 100 lb. German Shepherd, she checked, what I thought was a tumor or bot worm, on his back. She drained it (no complaints from him) and he healed! My cat got to see Dr. Emel- this time I was thinking the worst, she was drooling and off her food. Once again, great bedside manner- did all the tests, she was good, see how she does over the next two days...called back, she wasn't doing better (surgery) this time- the open appt was for Dr. Justine- so...yes, elderly cats get badly constipated...and this poor vet and the techs, well they did what they did and she took a massive dump that day and has been fine ever since. I don't know how my review was shortened but I've been a customer at this animal hospital for years and spent quite a bit of money there, my dog was 14.5 years old and she got a respiratory infection so they gave her some shots and some medicine and she seemed to be doing better but the she started getting worse so I called to try and make a appointment as soon as possible. The next appointment wasn't for a week so I asked to fit her in and they said bring her to the emergency vet. I brought her in one day early I guess they had a cancellation and they were late I waited About 10-15 minutes after my scheduled appointment and my dog died in my arms in the waiting room. The lady Duffy said that she was sorry to lose me as a customer. I wouldn't bring my pet there under any circumstances. They are about over charging you. read more

Never again. Have been going to this practice for ten years. My dog needed to see the vet (not an emergency but didn't seem like himself and was walking delicately). I was told they were booking two weeks out and to take him to the one of the emergency hospitals if I wanted him seen sooner. What?! No sick animal appointments? When I pressed about that as a long time patient, the not so friendly front desk person said I could bring and leave him and they would assess him (without me present). My dog is a rescue and blind and gets very nervous so I wasn't thrilled with this but was concerned enough that he wasn't himself that after an impt meeting I brought him in and the woman at the desk wanted me to sign forms saying I was agreeing to any treatment they deemed necessary while not present. I said I would want to speak to the vet before agreeing to any treatment or tests and she was then very snippy and said it was too late for anyone to see him! She said to bring him the next day in the morning to drop him off. The next morning my dog was back to his normal self, so I called and left a message and said I wouldn't be bringing him in but to please call back to schedule his annual exam for as soon as possible, knowing I could have a dialogue in person with the vet soon. It's been a week and no call back! Then, yesterday a neighbor's dog was loose and attacked my dog on his walk, giving him two puncture wounds. A friend recommended VCA in Darien and they could have not been nicer or kinder. They got us in right away and the vet spent half an hour with me answering questions, even general ones I expected to discuss during my pet's annual exam. They treated him so kindly and the technician discussed all the costs with me before they did anything. There was ample parking (unlike Norwalk Vet), and even snacks and water in the waiting room (and treats for the pups). It was very clean and everyone was so wonderful. Conversely, at one of my dog's recent annual exams at Norwalk vet, I specifically said not to give the bordetella, since we never board our dog, he is always dog sat by a friend, and they gave it to him and charged me anyway. Giving two stars only because I have had previous uneventful visits. Updated today to share that VCA Darien called to check in on my dog the day after his appt and make sure all was ok. Such a completely different and better experience there than at Norwalk Vet. read more

I have been using Norwalk Vet Hospital since 1995, and always extremely happy with the care my dogs received from Drs. Duffy and Dr. Major. Today I picked my sweet girl after Dr. Duffy amputated her leg due to a tumor. I am so grateful for all the care she was given from the front desk staff to the vet techs who cheered her on as we left. I have been going to this hospital for years. All of my dogs have been there since 2008. I brought my collie mix, Bodie in for his annual. But I also was concerned that he was not eating much if at all. Justine Cowan (not at all friendly) said he was overweight. Well, maybe he had fluid built up?? I am not a vet but think. I said do a thyroid test, he is 9 years old. She did. The hospital sends me a TEXT message back. Not a phone call from Cowan, a text. All Bodie's bloodwork was normal keep him on a diet. Well, for a week before visit appetite wasn't good, day before appointment didn't eat breakfast. That was June 26, 2024. I woke up this morning heard some barking downstairs around 5am. 8 am made their breakfast. I went down to feed them. My Bodie threw up fluids all over room and what little food in his stomach and was dead on the floor. As a proactive and loving pet guardian I do all I can to avoid such shock. I cannot afford a necropsy but seems to me he had a tumor growing in his stomach (hence overweight but not eating) with fluid. She couldn't deduce that? I found my beloved dog dead on the floor rigor mortis setting in. Thank you for nothing. Oh the VCA told me to call Norwalk Veterinary Hospital to tell them, but this is Sunday and all you get is that automated call the VCA or Cornell nonsense. Not even a voice mail can be left. I FOUND HIM DEAD ON THE FLOOR 7/7/2024 11 days after his full exam. Really? She couldn't think maybe something going on in his stomach?? I told her I just lost my Alapaha Blueblood American Bulldog 6 weeks before from hemangiosarcoma, a tumor errupted in his pancreas. This happened to our Dutch Shepard years ago and my Maltese had the same. I did surgery on Maltese and chemo he lasted 10 months. With just surgery 3 mos. prognosis. my large dogs could not be carried to and from for treatments so euthanasia before eruption is what I TRY to do. She knew I was worried about this, yet ignored me. And said to keep him on a diet? I have had a lot of cats and dogs. And I know when they are ill. And clearly, I tried to get him proper diagnosis which if I had a competent vet look at him, I would have known what type of tumor and when to euthanized. Their housemate a female boxer mix is wailing and crying all day and night because she lost them both. No compassion for owner or pet. My dog died while I was still sleeping, and his companions saw this. read more

Having used this vet for over15 years, we are making a change. While in the past Charlie and "Dr. Duffy" (don't call her Janice...) were always good to our dogs, something has definitely changed there and its not all COVID- related. We will never go back and you should think seriously about leaving your pet in their care. A few recent visits and a procedure on our newest dog gave us a clue. What little information we received from a tech about interaction with our pet inside their facility was short on details and, at best, wholly misleading. We're not high maintenance customers - just want real information - you'll get none of that from this facility. It's all smiles and b.s. It seems all their good vet doctors leave and are never heard from again - why is that? They are not all having families or looking for an easier commute, as we've been told. We recently moved to the area and purchased a puppy that we brought to this Vet a few months back for an initial checkup. During this checkup we met with Dr. Janice Duffy and informed her that our puppy had been flapping his ears and scratching at them which appeared to us to be a sign of discomfort. She shrugged off our claim and took a quick look in his ears before saying that he's fine and its normal for puppies. A few months later, he has continued to flap his ears and scratch at them so we brought him back to get him re-examined and a different doctor informed us that he has 2 ear infections. There is no way that these infections weren't developing in his ears when she first saw him and he has now been suffering for 3 months undiagnosed. I recommend anyone who cares for their pet to avoid this place at all costs due to the incompetence they display and lack of willingness to actually do their job to care about the well being and health of pets that walk through their door. read more

Since then I have documented the horrid nature of both personality and professionalism that is at its worst. I have never met a pair like them. They and their staff are the opposite of caring. As recently as a few days ago they have not changed since I left them for their atrocious behaviors. To this day, I fault them for the loss of my pets. No forgiveness no forgetting what they did. I recently moved to this area and was looking for a vet. I asked around and called four different places before deciding on this one. The office visit starts around $70 compared to $45 at nearby vets, but I personally think its worth the difference. The quality and the customer service are well worth it. My dog injured his leg so I took him here. The vet examined him and told me that my dog had torn his ACL. The vet recommended the wait and see approach because my dog is on the smaller side. He patiently answered all my questions and he never made me feel rushed or stupid for asking them. After the exam/diagnosis, I got a second opinion. The second opinion reconciled with the diagnosis. Fast forward, my dog ended up having surgery to fix his leg. The quote provided was accurate, and it included all the medicine and follow up appointments. I checked around, and the surgery was competitively and reasonably priced. I appreciate that they weren't trying to lowball me and then try to nickel and dime everything else. Again, the vet was very patient, and he explained the procedure and the healing process to me. The staff was helpful. I called before, during, and after surgery and they checked up on my dog and answered my questions. They've also been very responsive to my concerns post-surgery and were accommodating to my schedule. All in all, I'm very satisfied and I would highly recommend this place. read more

With the exception of the founders and owners of this vet, they seem to not be able to keep any other vets in the practice... which is TELLING. I loved Dr. Schwartzreich. He left. I loved Dr. Colberg-Dias. She left. Dr. Major is great. I hope for the sake of the animals this practice treats, she stays. Unfortunately, this practice has a poorly-run, rude, front desk staff which has completely ruined their operation. I've been going to this vet for the last 7 years with my dog, but no more. The receptionists and office staff used to be ok, but they've gone downhill over the last couple of years, and have shown very little care or concern for their patients. Very rude both on the phone and in person. It was like pulling teeth to get a refill on a prescription that my dog has been taking for 5+ years. First, the file was never given to the doctor, 36 hours later, the excuse was "we only have one doctor on, so he'll get to it when he gets to it. you should've called it in a week in advance." I was also scolded because "we haven't seen your dog in over a year, so we can't just prescribe the medication." Do you know how many days I was over the 1 year mark? FOUR. FOUR DAYS and they would rather give me a hard time than prescribe allergy medication for my dog who, without the medication can't make it through the night, and will just keep itching. We're in a global pandemic. COME ON. To top it all off, when the medication was finally ready to pick up, and the office manager came out to my car to give it to me, without wearing a mask. She said she forgot it... which raises the question: do they not require that the staff wear masks while working? Clearly, this practice doesn't care about the safety of their patients. We also only boarded our dog once at The Boarding House, which is connected to NVH and he returned dirty with a broken collar. I would NEVER board him there again. DO NOT USE THIS VET. read more

I had been a customer in good standing with this vet for over 15 years. I had used them as my vet for 3 cats and two dogs. I recently had a discrepancy with an amount that was invoiced to me versus the amount that they had estimated the cost to be. The amount billed was 60% higher than the written estimate that they provided. Instead of dealing with me on the issue they sent it to collections. JUST WANT TO LET EVERYONE KNOW TO NEVER EVER TAKE YOUR PETS TO NORWALK VETERINARY HOSPITAL on Connecticut Avenue next to the McD's... THEY COULD HAVE KILLED MY DOG! This past week was so scary for my dog Cooper. On Tuesday I got a call from the place who takes care of my dog while I am at work that I needed to come and get him, he was throwing up and coughing like crazy and shaking. By the time I arrived he was walking sideways eyes rolling around in his head and was becoming more and more unresponsive. My sister and I raced him to the vet. In the car I literally thought I lost him at one point as his eyes rolled back in his head his body went limp in my lap, he became totally unresponsive and I couldn't feel his heartbeat. Turns out the vet had given Cooper the wrong medicine in the right pill container with the right label. Cooper was given 25 mg of a pre-op sedative instead of his normal everyday medicine. When I looked it up online it said under the drug facts that a normal sized lab (which is about twice the size of Cooper) would be given between 1.5mg to 6mg MAX - AGAIN THEY GAVE HIM 25MG. The vet kept Cooper for the day and at the end of the day they had the gaul to try and charge me for something they considered unrelated to the issue. I asked to have the owner contact me so I could talk to him about the whole horrific situation and it is now 5 days later and I have yet to hear a word from him! THEY OBVIOUSLY DO NOT CARE AND I WILL NEVER BE GOING BACK THERE! read more

My poor dog was sick and we could not figure out why. Dr. Janice Duffy went out of her way to be thorough and discovered that he swallowed a golf ball and needed emergency surgery. She took the time to explain the procedure and the recovery process. Both Dr. Duffy and the staff were kind, compassionate and caring to us and Sammy. Do not take your dog here if you love him. Fair warning. Dr. Charles Duffy is a schmoozer, a bullsh*tter and tells every client their dog is in great shape, weight's great, no problem. Next. Pay at the window. He diagnosed my Westie as having 'white dog syndrome'. No such thing. Then he said, 'old dogs just sometimes flop on the ground' -- after a hip would give out and she dropped having a little spasm. Again, not true. He did a chest X-ray and saw nothing. I was back in 3 days later because she couldn't breathe and another vet there saw something else in the X-ray and said, Duffy missed what she was seeing. I had to take my dog to Cornell University Vet Specialists in Stamford to get the right diagnosis but I lost two weeks after going twice a week to him -- believing he had the knowledge to make an accurate diagnosis. And my dog died. He never realized she wasn't getting enough oxygen in her lungs and had pulmonary hypertension. Duffy said she had old dog lungs. (But that didn't kill her.) So, take serious heed. If you are on here checking out reviews of docs, know that this is not the practice you want to go to. I asked two champion dog breeders/judges about this place recently and they both had tried this practice and said --- 'Do not take your dog there. Too many doctors and they only care about money'. Someone else on here stated Janice Duffy killed her dog and didn't care. Just like her husband. They have both become consumed by greed. Lies&greed. Maybe they were good years ago. That is years ago. My dogs were boarded here without my approval, they spent 3 weeks staying on the Hospital side. The day after I got them back I took them to a groomer who discovered that my Malamute was so matted from being left in cage and had a horrible skin rash and needed to be shaved, she was still not acting correctly and I brought her to my vet. She had a staph infection, kidney infection and had lost 11lbs in 3 weeks. The other dog had a terrible ear infection as well as kennel cough. This place should be investigated! read more

I am a surgeon (for humans, not animals) and have been fortunate to have graduated from the top medical school, residency & fellowships in the country. So, I am not easily surprised by superior medical knowledge. The Drs. Duffy have very impressive diagnostic skills. They have saved the lives of many friends' dogs as well as mine. I have been taking my dogs to this vet practice for 25 years. I can't recommend them enough. Knowledgeable, compassionate care for my dogs (and me!). Recently I was there with my aging poodle and at the same time I was experiencing severe back pain. Dr Duffy cared for Hope and than returned to the lobby to help me get up! I called there today as Hope appeared to have eaten part of a poinsettia plant. He got on the phone right away to counsel me as to what to do. We have also seen Dr Major over the years with the same care and compassion for my pets (and me). When I read the negative reviews i think that those people either visited another vet practisr or just basically refuse to take responsibility for their own issues. These are vets you can trust. I drive 30 miles each way - and i have a full time job- now that I have moved because I want their care as my elderly poodle ages! My both puppies are patients of this place. Dr Charles Duffy always performed procedures on both of them. Without a question- he's a true professional really caring about his dogs and their owners. Unfortunately the same cannot be said about his wife Janice. Today I had an emergency with my dog so I called the hospital and I was connected to her twice: first time she did not answer all my questions and when I wanted to follow up, she simply hung up on me. The second time when I called I told her she was not polite and was very dismissive by not answering all my questions- instead of listening to what a customer has to say, she interrupted, started being argumentative with me and said if I didn't like their services they "would be happy to transfer me to whoever else I came from" and again- hung up on me. I never write bad reviews because I believe everyone is a human and as such we are allowed to make mistakes. However this time Mrs Janice Duffy intentionally crossed the line on the more than one occasion. This is not the way to treat the customers and people who bring you business especially when it comes to important family members as your pets. Bottom line- my dog is still not feeling well and I'm anxious because not all my concerns were addressed. As soon as my puppy recovers, I'll be changing the vet. While my dog was recently boarding there, a staff member noticed a lump on my cavalier and brought it to Dr. Janice Duffy's attention. When I went to pick him up, she asked that I see her first. She was so understanding, knowing I'd be upset. She told me what the possibilities were and went above and beyond finding special labs that could pinpoint the diagnosis. She contacted me as soon as the results were in and guided me through a treatment plan. She was patient, compassionate and had educational materials ready to go over with me. She's a dog owner herself so she gets it. In addition to thanking Dr. Janice, I also want to thank her staff who were kind and patient. I suggest you carefully read Tim S. review of this hospital. He states all that I've experienced with this veterinary hospital. With the exception of his comments on Dr. Major. Dr. Major was cold and clearly didn't like our shepherd. We attended this vet for 10 yrs 1st w/Dr. Schwartzreich who was great but left and then Dr. Colberg. Unfortunately, after Dr. Dias-Colberg left and the protocol regarding COVID began my dog suffered under the care of Dr. Charles Duffy. Several staff members were rude and uncaring. In July, Dr. Duffy gave our dog a clean bill of health despite the fact that she had arthritis, a self inflected wound that wouldn't heal and a sebaceous cyst. We contacted Dr. Duffy regarding the cyst he explained that he cut the hair around the cyst but did nothing else. Her condition began to deteriorate we desperately tried to get her in for an appointment but Dr. Duffy was on vacation which turned out to be a blessing because we were able to locate Dr. Colberg. Long story short - our beloved dog actually had canine lymphoma and we had to put her down. Dr. Duffy's all clear diagnosis of our dog was clearly negligence. Beware read more

I have been using Dr. Janice Duffy for the past 10 years for all of my animals. She and her staff have provided amazing service. One evening when my dog was sick I called the office 10 minutes to close and they waited for me to get there. She provided wonderful service and made sure my dog was comfortable. Most providers would have sent you to the emergency vet at that hour. I cannot say enough about Dr. Duffy and her staff. This vet is absolutely the worst. Various members of my family have been coming there for 16 years and we've had so many bad experiences. In the latest round, our dog was misdiagnosed and put on medication that near killed her. Our other dog had various problems after she was 10 years old and every time we brought her to Norwalk Vet, they would just suggest to put her down. They didn't even give us any other ideas! We eventually started going to a better vet that is unfortunately far away in New York, but that is actually interested in animals' livelihoods and runs the kinds of tests needed for a diagnosis. This vet was able to diagnose and treat Pepper's various health issues and added years to her life. Norwalk Vet is truly terrible. If you take your dog there and they tell you it needs to be put down, get a second opinion! read more

Have been going to this Vet for the past 10+ years. In total, we've used this Vet for 4 rescue dogs, 2 of which we got as puppies. Dr. Charles Duffy performed 2 successful ACL surgeries on one of our pups. He's also very skilled with "problem" (aggressive) dogs. One of our dogs was an angel, UNTIL he walked through the doors of the Vet, then he became CUJO. Dr. Duffy would come out and examine him in the parking lot or in our car. Dr. Lisa Major is fabulous. Our dogs LOVE her. We've used them for routine appointments, surgeries, and even an emergency (dog hit by car). They are knowledgeable and caring. The cost is on par with other vets and they will work with you regarding payment. You do have to leave a message when calling for an appointment, but you receive a return call within 30 mins.
