    Spices, Fishes, Rices!

The store name is an understatement! This little grocery is stuffed wall to wall with unusual and tasty treats. Pretty healthy stuff too. Make a habit of cooking Indian and you will loose weight and clean out your GI tract. Every square inch of every shelf of every aisle is packed with the most boggling variety of items I've ever seen. Probably all that's missing are goats. And maybe not. They could be behind the 25 lb bags of rice. The store clerk is very helpful at answering questions culinary and botanical. Want to know what a jackfruit is? Ask away. The only way they can stock more stuff is to suspend it from the ceiling with string. And now for fun, here are some alternate names for this store: "Just Everything" "Just Snacks, Not!" "All That and More" "Everything but goats"

Large variety but mostly bulk sizes!

Not Just Spices is the perfect place to pick up a few Indian ingredients, although it's too expensive to do all of your shopping here. That being said, most of the products are imported from India, so you are paying for the real deal! For some reason I was finding it next to impossible to find ground coriander at any grocery stores, even though I feel like it's a pretty basic spice! I ended up buying a container of garam masala for $5 and a bag of coriander for $4. They don't really have small sizes available so now I have 200g of coriander! The recipe I was making also called for cardamom pods, but those were $8-10 and I wasn't about to drop $20 on one recipe! It's super convenient that they stay open until 9pm, in case you need to come after work. Beware that there is a $10 credit card minimum! As the name implies, Not Just Spices also sells other things: a little bit of fresh produce and other Indian products like chips, frozen samosas, and even beauty products. It's so convenient to have a place to get these things right on Hope St.! And be sure to stop by the sister store, Not Just Snacks, across the street for Indian appetizers, curries, and desserts!

A few years back Not Just Spices seemed to be somewhat more expensive than other Indian/Pakistani markets in the area so my prior visits were infrequent. However, I recently visited and noticed that their pricing remains at circa year 2010 levels while nearby competitors have slowly inched up in price. My go-to items are now on par with competitors and my visits will consequently be more frequent. Possible areas of concern: -Narrow aisles, if you see someone come your way and it's crowded, don't be shocked if both of your butts kiss. -Limited refrigerator/freezer space and consequently less selection. -Tall shelves, some items may be out of immediate reach. -Very limited fresh items Positives: -Extremely helpful service -Fair pricing, especially compared to grocery store "ethnic" food aisle items -A somewhat fascinating random selection of ayurvedic health food and beauty items that I haven't seen elsewhere I like it here. But if your butt gets brushed against, try not to call the cops before you verify what's up. You might just be in need that organic import amla juice by the register. Just saying.

Select your jar, and the staff measures how much oz you want into a bag or your own reusable containers. It didn't occur to me to bring some old jars I have, but next time I will. There is a selection of books with lots of information of herbs! The Herbal Essentials is made by the owner of the shop I think, and it captivated my interest right away looking at the first few pages. Got a 10% deal because it was just released. After this book? I might try out others they have because I was very interested in learning more since there was such a variety within the shop and I'd love to get some knowledge on different benefits and types of herbs there are! Staff was kind and showed me how much an oz looks like and gave me recommendations! Very sweet to let me browse 7 minutes before closing. I'm coming back, and will reusable jars!

The sandwich had turkey, cheese, bacon ( I picked off), greens, and a delicious aioli sauce. I suggested that my husband and I go in and try it a couple months later. It is located in the same plaza as Avenue N in Rumford. The storefront is made up of a glass "garage door" so it is pretty cool and unique inside. Service was prompt and friendly. Hubby tried the Cuban, he loved it, and I, creature of habit, stuck to my turkey panini. Once we ordered, the sandwiches came up faster than I expected. I had to use the bathroom and had to go next door to Avenue N. The owner or manager held the door for me, and was very friendly. Everyone that we have met there is friendly. If you want a good sandwich you won't be disappointed!

Just a sandwich in regular size bread pressed as a panini, and it was $12!!! I had no idea until I had to sign for it! The special board didn't have a price and all the other sandwiches were around $8 so I thought it would be the same. Even worse, one bite in and I was disgusted. The chicken was not cooked well and had that rubbery texture where you have to really pull with your teeth to break it. I threw it away after 2 bites and I'm gagging thinking of it. This could be a one off, but I'm really bummed about wasting $12 on my one spend day of the week! I have some other little gripes that honestly bring down my old rating too. We bought some stuff from the shop, which is still really cute and offers a lot of local (though very upcharged) stuff. And when we checked out, there's a line for tip! Everyone feels weird leaving a tip line blank, so why is it there! Just to make us feel awkward?!? All they offer to drink is hot coffee or cold brew, everything else is a deli or store or serve yourself food so why even tipping! Just made me and my friend awkward leaving that line blank, made us feel rude but why would we tip for only buying grocery items.

My comments have been flooded with Market Basket requests since I started this journey. For full transparency, I didn't know MB existed until I started DOGGIN these chickens. I walked in with my production team, and was so caught off guard. Employees smiling from ear to ear while being dressed to the nines, floors squeaky clean, a fresh popcorn station, a delectable looking hot bar, etc. There is just so much soul in here. This is what a family run grocery store looks like before they sell out. You can just tell, this is their baby. They care so much. They put their heart and soul into running these stores, and it shows. I felt like I was in a Bucee's, and I don't know if I could give a higher compliment. Perhaps the most surprising thing of all was the $4.69 rotisserie chicken. This marks the cheapest tissi Chicken Wars has ever seen. Cheaper than Costco and Sam's Club. How are they doing this? My one concern was that the chicken came in saran wrap, which I thought would make the skin all soggy. The other 32 grocery stores I've tried all came in a plastic bag or plastic container. However, I respected the confidence. They're not scared to do something no one else is doing. Talent hits a target no one else can hit, genius hits a target no one else can see. We got this bird and took it to a park down the street, and I began consumption. The skin was ideal, a perfect golden brown with a slight crisp. The saran wrap didn't make it soggy at all. The breast was perfectly tender and was delicious. I didn't need one sip of water throughout the whole bird. The leg was operating at a high level as well, falling off the bone. I sat on this park bench in awe. How? How can this be $4.69, a good size, and this good? It didn't make sense. I'm still struggling to come to terms with it. I ended up giving it an 8.9/10, which makes it tied for 3rd with the Fresh Market. My only critique is it didn't have as much flavor as Fairway or Publix, but it was right there. I was so inspired that I went back in and tried to buy a hat, but they didn't sell any smh. I was especially thankful for this, as we needed a road win in New England. The other 2 birds I tried up here were ROUGH. A nice side effect of this journey has been traveling to try new birds. Every time I travel, I feel like I gain a wealth of knowledge in a short period of time. I grow and learn every time I go to a new place, and to me, that's what life is all about. Learning, growing, and trying to satiate this passionate curiosity I have about the world. THANK YOU MARKET BASKET FOR BRINGIN THE REAL BACK! FOR BRINGING THE SOUL BACK! IG @jnov_ Tiktok @jnov__
