So I received a Groupon for this place from my boyfriend because he said I was stressed out. I gladly took it and booked my appointment and went. When I got to Springfield Therapeutic Massage yesterday the staff is very friendly and welcoming so I felt welcomed. It was odd that I didn't fill out a release form like most massage places ask you to do and to circle what areas you want concentrated on. I was ushered to my room and the lady told me to take my clothes off and get under the sheet face down on top of a paper sheet (which was scratchy ). When the masseuse (Sophia) came in the room she said hi and started her work. This is where it gets weird.... She didn't touch my skin the whole session. She massaged me thru the top sheet. And I won't even call it a massage. It was some knuckle action that was pretty painful to when she got to my spine I had to tell her to stop. I was beginning to feel some sort of way like why isn't she touching me I know I showered this morning. And the massage I was faced down for 47 of the 55 minutes. It was awful and not to mention noisy. I could hear the other client next to me getting his massage. When she was done she cut a light on and told me get dressed. I've had plenty of massages before and I know you are supposed to get water to help the blood circulate. Did I get any, nope!!!! As I walked out the receptionist made certain to hand me an envelope with Sophia name on to ask me for a tip. Now I am a bartender and know the value of a tip but I'm sorry I could only give her $7 because of her friendliness and not because of her service. I definitely do not recommend this place and the only reason I gave it 2 stars and not 1 is because the place was clean and the staff was friendly but the Sophia was hands down the worse masseuse I have ever had!!! read more

I came here thinking it was a Swedish massage parlor with oils, calming music, etc. It's just another one of those Chinese acupressure places where you can hear the neighboring clients and therapists speaking. I've been a customer of the Ballston location for awhile but recently moved to Alexandria. I found this place on a Groupon (didn't realize the two were connected until I showed up) for a 90min massage. The entrance is just inside the Springfield Mall (park in between the Target, old Macys, and the new Nordstrom Rack going in). The lobby is small but I was greeted by the owner(?) when I first arrived, who actually remembered me. I was able to make a last minute apt at 1pm that afternoon and was pleased for both parties to be on time. The back area is separated by a door and is much warmer than the lobby, which I was really thankful for. The "rooms" are areas sectioned off with wall panels with a large drape as the "door". The walls in the rooms don't reach the ceiling, which I will get to in a minute. I undressed and laid on the table, which had a single top sheet, a thin blanket, and a paper-material-sheet on the bottom. This sheet was both welcomed and weird, as it wasn't uncomfortable and probably increased sanitation while decreasing costs (less laundry), it was definitely different and made me ponder about the top sheet. My therapist was Jason and asked what type of pressure and any areas of focus and then got to work. He was very skilled and took his time in the areas of concern, but he forgot that I wanted much, much lighter pressure in the leg areas (I reminded him twice, but gave up). My single BIGGEST gripe: heat, and more of it. The oil/lotion was cold, the bed wasn't heated, and the air temp combined with the oiled skin was freezing. I was super uncomfortable at times but the massage was good enough and once the lotion/oiled warmed to my skin, it wasn't bad. During the massage I overheard a few folks chatting (clients) due to the non-separated room structure, but they did have (excellent!) music playing in the background that really helped me block those folks out, especially since it was at a volume that was not overpowering, but helped drown any chatter out. Seriously, the music was awesome..not your typical spa serenading, but it sounded like instrumental soundtrack music (like, the music in key scenes in movies, not TSwift...think "Titanic" or "Avatar" music), I wish I had asked what they were playing Overall, great massage but there are a few little things that if they improve, I will definitely come back: -Heat that oil/lotion up..seriously, it was freezing -An additional blanket would be awesome, or better yet, heated tables (the only real way to ensure warmth throughout) -Put up signs asking guests to keep any talking to a whisper, and try to refrain from said chitchat anyways. I didn't know that sound carried so well and I know I was chatting with the front desk lady as she took me back and I wouldn't have been offended one bit if I was asked, politely, to keep as quiet as possible. -Perhaps have guests sign in with a sheet that they can circle body areas and their desired pressure for those areas -The bottom sheet on the table was a bit..weird. Perhaps go back to real sheets and deal with the laundry somehow? I'd likely go back, especially on a list minute whim, although I think I'm still searching for my new go-to place read more

What a joke! Went in on Sunday, and they send in someone who smells like an ash tray. The walls are 3/4, so you can hear every conversation in the rest of the place, and the receptionist is quite loud for a massage place. I got up and left after 5 minutes! read more

The staff and the cleanliness of this establishment are worthy of five stars, but the massages aren't worth any. The folks at Springfield Therapeutic Massage are so nice that it pains me to leave such an awful review, but I have to warn people about this place. This is not a fancy massage place, but fanciness isn't needed for a good massage. The best massage I ever received with in a total hole-in-the-wall. Springfield Therapeutic Massage just doesn't deliver a good massage. My husband and I both had massages here. First, no one asks you about any places to avoid or places to concentrate; they just jump right in. For me, this meant that I nearly jumped off the table in pain when my lower back (where I have three herniated discs) was basically assaulted with an elbow. To "fix" the issue, he went and grabbed the BenGay-- like that would help. The majority of my hour was spent in the middle of my back. Almost no attention was paid to my neck and shoulders (where I needed it most) and my feet were never even touched. To top it all off, each time he'd lean into me he'd brace himself right at the spot where I hurt the most. I spent most of my hour tensed up, gritting my teeth, and hoping it would end soon. My husband felt like jello when he left, but upon waking up the next day, his back is covered in blue and purple bruises-- absolutely covered. He hasn't slept well because everything hurts; it hurts to have water run over it in the shower, hurts to put on a shirt, poor thing is a mess. This is a cheap massage. $50 for an hour is a deal-- but you're better off saving your money and going somewhere that genuinely cares about your health. read more

Great place to get a massage. I've been there twice now in the space of 1 month. Had different therapists each time and both were great. Excellent pressure and good technique from both. This was a birthday gift from my husband and as soon as we entered the place I was excited bc it appeared to be legit...even though we were in the mall...the front desk clerk tried to over talk us and tell us that we HAD TO put the tip on the $60 1 hour charge before services were rendered. After explaining to her that we would pay the tip after the service was complete she agreed and offered add-on services (for an up charge of course) so she walks me in the back and tells me to walk in the room that was only covered by a curtain...not to undress or anything...there was nothing in the room but a massage table and a stool...with a coat hook on the wall. I undress lie down and a different lady comes in --no introduction or anything...meanwhile the bed had a paper covering on top of a sheet that felt crunchy on my skin--but what should I expect being in a mall...any who I told her that I wanted medium pressure and we agreed to the hot stones...things were going ok until she must've forgotten that I said medium and went full out damn deep tissue...squirming on the table I think she got the hint and eased up on me...the next bad thing was the people talking around the room...you'd think that since it was a massage parlor it would have a serene feeling but it didn't...I heard more outside conversations than I needed too and couldn't get comfortable in fear of someone opening up the curtain...I gave two stars only because the lady took the entire hour and was kind but nothing more bc the atmosphere was not that of a massage parlor. read more

I went and got a massage today because I had severe back and shoulder pain from sitting at my desk all day. This was my 2nd time here and this time was even better. Lisa was my therapist tonight. She spent a lot of time working on my neck, shoulders, & back. Lisa really knows what she's doing and she used strong pressure on me. I could hear her kneading away the lactic acid build up in my body. Towards the end of the massage, she pulled me by my hands to stretch my upper body. I heard a subtle pop and felt the most amazing release of tension. This woman is amazing and oh so talented. She's better than my chiropractor!!! All of the pain I had in my upper body earlier today is all gone!!!!! read more

I was looking for a once-a-week, affordable massage place, and this place is just about right for that. Spartan decorations, probably because it's new, but the massage quality is good for the price, and the staff is very attentive for scheduling and the like. I've gotten 3 massages there so far, and all 3 have been good to very good. I have constant lower-back pain from a previous injury, and they were very responsive to my particular needs, more so than I would expect for this type of place. The store location makes it very convenient for me to do a spur-of-the-moment massage. It's almost like doing an errand, but you're doing something that is really good for you. The relatively low price point makes it something that I can put in as part of a weekly routine. That's a plus for me with this place. The only real drawback is that Springfield Mall still hasn't really gotten a lot of energy yet, so it's not as convenient as it could be once more stores come in. I'm glad that the mall has finally gotten a face lift, but it still is a work in progress and feels a bit empty. I'm looking forward to seeing how it fills in over the rest of the year. The only reason I give two stars is because my first experience was a decent massage. The most recent massage I received was worth negative stars. I told the front desk lady I wanted someone strong for a deep tissue massage, but when my massage therapist came in she spent an excessively long time just spreading oil on to my back, like with almost no pressure. Then when I indicated that I had come for a deep tissue massage, she then proceeded to spend the rest of the session jamming her elbows as hard as she could into my spine and scapula. I felt like she didn't even touch anywhere that wasn't bone except for maybe the neck massage part where she was pressing on my carotid arteries the entire time. I have had a lot of massages, and am currently in physical therapy school. This is by far the worst massage I've ever received and I had asked on my first visit if all their therapists are licensed but this experience really makes me wonder because I really don't think it was safe the way she was jamming her elbow into my cervical spine. It gave me a massive migraine, and my neck still really hurts. I will not be returning. read more

I've been to this establishment a few times and I've even referred a few friends to this place. But I WILL NOT RETURN to this place after my massage today. It was so bad to the point I reduced my 90 min hot stone massage to 60 min and no hot stone because I was so scared the lady had no idea what she was doing. I was so upset the lady was elbowing my spine, pulling on my ligaments and when I told her she was hurting me, she started pouring the cold oil all over my body from the BOTTLE and NOT in her hands first to warm it up. Then she started to rub me like I was a child and have the audacity to wipe all that oil with a napkin instead a hot towel. I have gotten massages from all over the world and I would say this is the worst experience of my life! read more

I unfortunately had a very negative experience here. I entered the massage shop and requested a 30 minute massage. The lady at the receptionist desk simply responded "No, BYE. I don't have time". It was the really shocking to have her be so nasty. My friend and I said ok well we don't feel welcome, don't worry about us coming back and the lady at the receptionist desk said "so I don't care". I have no idea what was going on in that place this past weekend, but I'll standby and see how long they actually stay open with that type of customer service. The massages at this shop are the absolute BEST in the DMV. I have had quite a few massages from several different places in the area. Jim in particular is amazing. Based on feedback from other reviews, I booked an appointment with him for a Swedish massage. His technique is more like a deep tissue Thai massage which is absolutely fine for me because I was extremely tense and my muscles were very, very tight. I agree with other reviewers that he does not ask questions about preferences and pain points but as an experienced person who's had massages frankly all over the world including in Thailand, I guess that doesn't bother me personally. Frankly, I haven't had many masseuses ask me a lot of questions anyway! And even when I do tell them where there are pain points, it doesn't really make that much of a difference. Personally, I like a masseuse who is experienced enough with their craft to feel the muscles and nowhere there are knots and tension and zero in on those points. Jim is an expert at doing that. I walked out of there feeling like a brand new person. He intuitively knew where to spend more time with the tight muscles in my back and neck and he elongated the other muscles in my arms. I cannot say enough about how much better I feel after just that one service. I am definitely going back and I highly recommend him. Note: be sure to add about 10 minutes to your arrival time for parking because this is Springfield Mall. read more

I LOVE this place and have been going for about 3 years. I love that I can walk in when I feel like a massage. They're well priced and I've never had a bad massage. My favorite is the deep tissue with hot stone. I have a lot of issues with my shoulders from working on a computer for so many years and massage helps me avoid cortisone shots. They are pros at deep tissue, but be aware, it's not always for the faint of heart, it's DEEP tissue. It's done miracles keeping my pain under control. They offer lots of different types of massage if you need something more subtle or specific. I buy their 6 pack massages that saves you a bit of $ and allows me to go as often as once a week if I need. It's always clean and professional without chatting you up during the massage. I had a great experience with the massage however, the reason for my low rating is because of the receptionist. I felt unwelcomed throughout my whole visit. It was our first time so we had many questions but she answered them very bluntly without clear explanations. During the massage, my mom and I were talking quietly for a brief second and the receptionist came into the room and shushed us very rudely. I realized later that there were half walls and they were so thin that I could hear everything from the other room but she could have told us to be quiet a nicer way. I had been to this location before and the service is not always consistent, but it is close to where I live. On this occasion I purchased a groupon deal and called to make an appointment in accordance with the guidance on the groupon deal. I have never had to make an appointment before and they always had staff available to accommodate me with a female therapist. Over the phone I made the appointment for 11:30 am with a female therapist and then when I mentioned a groupon deal, they stated they had no female therapist until 6 pm. Not cool! When I got there, they noticed that I had been there several times so they did accommodate me, however that's not a cool business practice and I will not be going back. I enjoyed the pressure Julie used, I asked for medium-firm and she delivered! She used more forearm and elbow than I am used to, and less hand than I was expecting. All things considered, she is a good massage therapist. It's probably cheaper to use the soft paper table covers and a single towel instead of bottom and top sheets and blankets, but I prefer the sheets/blankets in general. The tropical temperature was much appreciated after undressing and having just a bath sheet-sized towel to cover me. The location is brand new, but they made some odd decorating choices. As others have noted there are no full walls separating massage rooms and there are no doors, just curtains; so not much privacy and you can hear what others are saying. They've fixed the music commercials problem and now it's all just relaxing instrumental and bird/beach sounds. read more

I have been coming here for 8 months every few weeks to get 30 minute massages (my husband too) and now they decided no more appointments for 30 minutes. This means I have to drive all the way to the mall and wonder around until the therapist I always see has an opening. People do not have time to do that! I work, have school and a life and can't wonder around the mall. I don't think this is how you treat loyal repeat customers. I will not be back. I tipped Jason 30% every time as well so you can do without a repeat customer who tips well. read more

This is not the typical massage place you would find in a mall. I usually swing in to places like this when my wife is shopping. Many other places will do a sub par massage over your clothes for a cheep price. Springfield Theriputic Massage is a legit massage parlor. I have been there multiple times now and have always enjoyed the service. I have gotten better deep tissue massages here than much more expensive massage studios in old town and DC. The only downside my wife and I found was that the massage tables are a touch uncomfortable, but for $60 for and hour you just can't beat this massage. read more

Had to ask her over and over to repeat what she was saying, which frustrated both of us. I asked to speak with someone else, but she would not do that. That said, we managed to make an appointment (I think!) but I decided to cancel in the end. I was suspicious of this place after my negative phone experience, so I read the Yelp reviews, which confirmed my suspicions. Good communication is important to me when it comes to such a personal service like massage. If you can't communicate well with these people, physical injury can happen. The only greeting I got was instructions to "follow that guy," who led me to a curtained "room" (more like a divided section of a larger room as the wall doesn't go all the way to the ceiling. I was instructed to get undressed and lie face down and the gentleman left and returned a few minutes later when I was ready. The massage was too hard- it hurt! At the end, the guy tapped on my lower legs a few times and said "I'm done" and left the room. When leaving, the receptionist only asked if I was going to leave a tip and pointed to a sign listing the expected tip amounts for the various services. I paid the specified tip amount and she said good bye. The entire experience just felt rushed and impersonal. I don't recommend it to anyone. read more

Yes a bit of a language barrier (asked for 2 female masseuses for our couples massage but got 1 male/1 female) and it doesn't have as much privacy as some may be accustomed too in the US, but certainly nothing that is a show stopper. I have worked as a certified massage therapist in Virginia, so this may be a little bit why I am giving it one star. I have chronic issues in my back and shoulders, and wanted a good deep tissue massage. On my first trip there I had someone named Karen. She was awesome. I had literally been looking for a good therapist for months, and she was it. She knew the deep tissue modality and really put a (good) hurting on me. I was happy to have found someone that met my needs as a client. I scheduled another session, asking for Karen. I was told "ok, with Karen, see you soon." Yet, upon arriving I was given someone else, that was nowhere near as good. I was disappointed but was willing to try again, maybe Karen got sick that day. At the third visit, I again asked to be scheduled with Karen. 'Ok, no problem see you soon!' Yet again, no Karen, but some less skilled person incapable of the deep tissue modality I requested. I won't be going back. The search for a good therapist continues, but not here. read more

Nestled in the Springfield Mall near the Target end. I had a one hour massage from Lisa. Her English was fine and her massage was excellent. I've been here 4 times and the massage itself has been consistently good. What I don't like about this place is the lack of privacy. There are flimsy dividers between the massage tables so that you hear the entire conversation nearby. Personally I want to drift into solititude to relieve stress while getting a massage and not be distracted by the chatter 20 feet away. read more
