I purchased a book about mushroom foraging by an Appalachian author called "Go Forth and Forage" and by fiancé purchased a helpful guidebook about identifying trees, which is essential to foraging. I read the mushroom book cover to cover and absolutely loved it! The store is very clean, well lit and well organized, although small. I did find the service a bit standoffish and when I purchased the book the woman checking me out just handed it to me with the receipt tucked in, without even asking if I wanted a bag. I guess I this area most people don't want a bag because they charge for them, but like could you let me know that and at least offer one? Seemed odd. Otherwise nice spot and I look forward to returning here next time I am in town.

I walked in and said hello to the lone employee behind the counter, who seemed annoyed that anyone would speak to her. There was also a group of about four teenagers who were talking about the books, laughing and being normal kids. From what I could tell as someone who also used to work in a bookstore, they weren't being disruptive at all and sounded like they were talking about school assignments, among other things. A few minutes into my visit, the lone employee, an older woman, curtly told the group of kids to leave. I left soon after, and as I later said to one of the co-owners over the phone, that's how five potential customers turns to zero. What's the point of running/working in any business if you're put out by any and every customer? Is this the secret to small business success in a town where every other storefront is shuttered?

Not a bit. And that is a very good thing indeed. it is completely non-computerized, has no website, no bright lights or music, or really even a sign out front. The only noise is the owner's typewriter thwacking away in the background. Mostly non-fiction, with a focus on New England history and American history, you really never know what you're going to find here. Maybe some vintage humor books from the 1940s, maybe some back issues of Vermont History magazine, maybe a box of small books from the 1820s being sold as a lot. If you want to step out of the world of technology and into the realm of books as they existed before the era of e-readers and mega-bookstores, this place is a must to visit. You never know what you might find! One note though - the hours are extremely limited. Definitely call beforehand to be sure it's open.

It's a very impressive collection and has a good variety of genres and while a lot are vintage I did stumble upon some more commonly know titles such as Harry Potter and a Hunger Games book. If you only explore the main building and skip the yurt you certainly miss out! The owner was extremely friendly and you could tell this is a passion of his to share his collection for others to find and collect! Also for the most part I really thought prices were reasonable, with many of the books in the yurt looking like they were $3-$4 roughly. They had a huge variety of genres including a second story with additional genres of books. It is set up in a well organized manner and when my wife checked out with her book selection the worker was friendly. This was also evident by some other interactions we saw them have with other patrons locating specific books. They instantly knew where to grab the book they were looking for. I was amazed by the large layout and selection while browsing. The display areas are engaging and have you stopping to look every few feet. I found books for myself, as well as a Father's Day gift for my husband thanks to a specific display they had with Father's Day ideas. I loved the vinyl section, the horror selection, and the large graphic novel area. They also had some unique art books on display that I had not seen anywhere else. At one point I was looking for a specific title and the employee was able to help me find it. When checking out I learned they had been here for 13 years and the first shop is located in Manchester, Vermont. I was given a 10% off coupon and told about their online shop. I love supporting indie bookstores and spent a good 30 minutes shopping around. Very happy with my purchase. This is a bookstore you won't want to miss!

My only complaint is that the romance section was surprisingly small; I feel like BookTok has really helped that genre take off so seeing just two shelves of romance was disappointing. But the sci-fi/fantasy section is great, and with an entire level dedicated to children's books I can see it being a hit for families too. They also have discounted books labeled with the "Great Price" sticker which was nice to stumble upon; everyone loves a good deal!

We ended up purchasing 3 books, with one dated back to the 1850s for a great price. I love the history of this bookstore and its purpose. It was founded by a courier who lived modestly and loved books. He collected books to preserve history, with books from all around the world.

I'm on a mission to explore every indie bookstore possible, so while recently visiting family in…read morethe Adirondacks, a quick Google search had me adding The Book Cabin to my list to explore. The Bookstore Passport book was honestly the best concept ever and I'm lowkey bummed to have not discovered it at any other indie bookstores to date! Even if your TBR is full, you still need to stop here to grab this for all your future bookstore runs. I will admit this is not the most accessible location, but it's 100% authentically Adirondack. You follow the main road around the lake until you curve around a corner that puts you right in front of the parking lot entrance, so be ready for it to sneak up on you. The parking lot is gravel with a gravel trail curving up the hill to where the cabin itself is, so that may be hard for some to navigate with the incline and uneven path. However it's so quaint and peaceful once up there! The cabin has a wraparound porch with some goodies on it, including sale items! I found two books off the sale cart to come home with me (combined cost was less than a brand new book!), and also checked out a little of the bookish travel mugs before actually heading inside through the wooden screen door (again, quintessential Adirondack feature). The interior of the store is maximized to every possible opportunity even though it's only one actual room. Bookshelves line every wall, and a few mini shelves create a couple of aisles. There's a great section dedicated to books either set in the area or by authors from the area, as well as an extensive fiction selection. There's also nonfiction, YA, and kids, plus some puzzles and crafts. Their bookish selection is extensive, more than just bags and stickers - I saw travel mugs and coffee cups, coasters, bookmarks, candles, small shelf trinkets, and more. Plus they offer blind dates with a book! I'm always a sucker for those so of course I picked one up. And then right by the checkout, the glorious bookstore passport! I was instantly obsessed when I saw it, then incredibly disappointed that I hadn't seen this in the dozens of other indie bookstores I've been to. You best believe I will be hyping it up to every bookseller I know! When I first got there, a mom & son were browsing as well, then it was just me for a bit. The shopkeeper was quietly doing her own thing, which honestly I prefer - if I'm looking for something specific I'll ask, but places like this are meant for browsing and taking your time. She was sweet when it was time to checkout, and it looks like they have a loyalty program that could be nice for locals. Overall a great find tucked at the base of the Adirondacks and outside of the craziness of the outlets or the village of Lake George!

The charm of shopping for books in a log cabin or perusing a sale rack on the deck is just off the charts. The selection is good but a bit limited by the spot's real estate. I personally kind of wish so much of the store wasn't dedicated to kid's books/gifts--the setting feels more appropriate to the mature literature--but I can understand the choice. Owner is very friendly and happy to chat about book recs or the region. Only weekend hours during the off season, and will be closing for the winter but opening again for the spring.
