It's been over a decade since we wrote about Northshire, but it's not for lack of visiting; we're here every time we go to Vermont, which is just about every year. And Northshire only gets better and more appreciated by us. To be brief about it: their stock of books, new and even used, is formidable in so many areas (we're especially admiring of their history and cookbooks). The store continues to grow, literally and figuratively. The people who work here are knowledgeable about books and about the specifics of the store. They seem able to resolve just about any request. And there's a lot to Northshire that's beyond books, things like gift sections, a deli and drink bar with a comfy seating area where you can snack while reading (and it doesn't have to be a book you bought here!). It's a busy independent bookstore, and we definitely believe it's one of the best in the country. Lots of alcoves and alleys to explore, all loaded with books, so it's fun, too. Do yourself a favor: if you're anywhere around here drop by. We believe Northshire is a gem!

I spent 3 hours in this place, browsing and taking in the atmosphere. I adored all the nooks where they created dedicated genre sections. It was like an endless maze but a fun one. The staff notes were fun to read (particularly loved their banned books shelf). The kids section upstairs is not to be missed! So whimsical and sweet!

Such a quaint and charming place! The employees are super helpful and nice. I loved all the book reviews from the staff and others. I loved all the beautiful flowers and pumpkins outside the store. Definitely stop here when you're in Manchester!

#1/2023 #558 ++ Ambiance is an intimate independent bookstore. TNB is surprisingly larger than its first appearance but feels cozy, bright and comfortable... the Northshire Bookstore is a bookstore that you want to get lost in. It is made of continuous small rooms filled with books, small treasures with a few seats. Outside there are a couple of small benches next to creative sculptures and quote filled floors. ++ TNB has a little bit of every genre. While they won't have every title, they likely have at one to two titles of an author. If not, they are happy to locate it for you. They have an awesome children's section upstairs up a gorgeous Hogwarts wrought iron stairs. Besides books, I found many trinkets and small gifts. They have a small coffee and café with a decent size self-serve DR. Their food choices are pretty decent quick pick me ups. Homemade soups, chili, sandwiches, desserts and froufrou bevies. + Price is on the higher side but not unreasonable. ++ Service was pleasant at both the café and the bookstore cashier. + Parking is a small private lot. It was packed and street parking is also available. The Northshire Bookstore is one of my favorite independent bookstores left that is actually thriving. A must stop in Manchester!

After enjoying some great coffee, we decided to explore the downtown area and stumbled upon a charming bookstore with a cozy coffee shop tucked inside. Walking in felt like stepping into a magical space, rows of both used and new books filled the shelves. I picked up a World War II book for my son and a bee lotion set made with clean ingredients. The store was incredibly well-organized by genre, spotless, and had a warm, small-town vibe. I absolutely loved it. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the prices were quite reasonable. When I return to Vermont, I'll definitely make a point to visit this bookstore again.

How lovely! Such a big selection of new and used books. I found the prices to be reasonable and all staff I encountered extra friendly! Will make a trip out of my way to come back.

A book lovers dream store from the archway made from book spines to the little nooks. You really can get lost in this bookstore for hours. I was looking for a particular book and my friend found a copy in the used section! Score! I'd definitely be back to get some of the local items in the shop section. Really unique gifts and keepsakes.

Just my fav place to visit and hang out ! I love that you can purchase used books as well. The best thing about Northshire - the staff! They will find any book you need. It's a must visit while in the area

[1142] 12/2020 We saw all the great Yelp reviews so we decided to check this place out while we were in Vermont. I'm glad we did as this place is a book lovers dream. You can spend hours here just looking thru all the different floors of books of new and used books My son picked up a ton of books which made me happy. We decided to come back a second day since the place is so cool. Parking sucked since the lot was small. I'll definitely be back.

One of my all-time favorite bookstores!…read more As you're walking along the street, you may notice a sandwich board with a pointer finger directing you upstairs in a building in downtown Bennington. This is your best indicator that they're open. Otherwise you might not notice this hidden gem because it's upstairs in an office building. But as soon as you make it through the door, you won't regret having come! It's clear to see that these guys have a good time with their shop. There are labels for sections and parts of the store that could only grow out of fondness, like "The Cave" for the small little room that sits next to the check-out desk, where the psychology and sci-fi books are housed. Love the combo. Or "The Treasure Chest" for overflow books, so varied and ever changing, that you never know what you might find. They have an ever-changing new arrivals section, displaying some of the more popular current novels, which is a great place to look for recommendations. They also have a great children's section, with old readers from quite a while back. Their foreign language section is pretty limited, but that's the case with most bookstores. There were some beautiful old books in German last time I was there. They have a great new england and Vermont section, though I can't admit to having browsed it very thoroughly. Amazingly, they also order books for you if they don't have something. A very kind service. It's worth a visit to this wonderful used bookstore. It's surprisingly large, and full of a huge variety of books.

Cute new bookstore in an area sadly bereft of the same--generally have to drive down to Saratoga…read morefor any kind of literary browsing and shopping up here. The size of this charming spot does limit its collection somewhat, but it's still rather well curated. Optimal for a quick browse and find a summer read or nice gift for a friend or to kill a bit of time on a cloudy lake day. I found quality gifts for family in my two visits here--both in the popular or literary book vein as well as local interest books. The charm of shopping for books in a log cabin or perusing a sale rack on the deck is just off the charts. The selection is good but a bit limited by the spot's real estate. I personally kind of wish so much of the store wasn't dedicated to kid's books/gifts--the setting feels more appropriate to the mature literature--but I can understand the choice. Owner is very friendly and happy to chat about book recs or the region. Only weekend hours during the off season, and will be closing for the winter but opening again for the spring.
