This is a great example of a local bookstore that is doing it right! This was one of several places we wondered into during our visit to this little downtown section. You could spend quite a few hours jumping from place to place. Any book lovers doing so should stop in here! They had a huge variety of genres including a second story with additional genres of books. While my wife is definitely the bigger reader out of us two, I did think it had a lot of newer releases as well as plenty of classics if that's more your style. It is set up in a well organized manner and when my wife checked out with her book selection the worker was friendly. This was also evident by some other interactions we saw them have with other patrons locating specific books. They instantly knew where to grab the book they were looking for. Showed they were knowledgeable of the store. My wife almost ended up with two books but in the end only grabbed one, but I am sure if we stayed longer we would have grabbed more. Utterly obsessed with this precious, well stocked downtown bookstore. From the minute we walked in the door and were treated to the unmistakable smell of BOOKS, we were in heaven!! I was on vacation with lots of time on my hands and realized I hadn't remembered to bring some books to read. Fortunately, there was this amazing bookstore in downtown Wilmington. It's like bookstores that you rarely see anymore--full of wall-to-wall books of many varieties. Furthermore, the staff they were extremely helpful. They pointed me to the section I was looking for right away, which had twice as many books of interest than I would've expected at a much larger store. Overall it was a great experience. This bookstore is a total gem: great selection, great layout, great "bookstore feel" (you know what I mean). Staff is super helpful with all your questions and generally really friendly. In addition to an excellent selection of books across genres, they have a great Vermont section (know more about where you're visiting!) AND cutesy stationary and various fun accouterment . Friendly, well-organized bookstore with interesting selections! We wandered in here while waiting on a restaurant reservation. I was glad that this spot was open relatively late for a small town. There are plenty of new fiction and nonfiction books, as well as staff recommended selections. The children and young adult book section is pretty robust for the store size. Downstairs is a coffee machine, a nice touch. The upstairs is quite cozy with a sofa and art display. I didn't end up getting anything, but the SO picked up a few books. I would definitely recommend this bookstore for anyone who wants a welcoming local environment. read more

This small bookstore is remarkably well-curated and one of my favorite stops in the area. The selection isn't huge, particularly in genre fiction, but I always find something new and interesting nestled among the hot new releases. Around the corner from the fiction are a few interesting Vermont-specific books. Wandering upstairs has a charming collection of books you might expect tourists in a small Vermont town to buy-- a few on cocktails, a diverse range of cookbooks from around the world, sustainable living, and woodworking. Art books are arranged along one wall with a rotating selection of eye-catching books (maybe arts and crafts, maybe something else), all of the sort you might give as a gift or unapologetically tuck in your "I'm on vacation and determined to relax" bag. I've brought several friends here and they've all had good luck, much to their joy and the chagrin of their wallets. They also have a frequent buyer program if you are local or come to Wilmington often. read more

Very cute little bookstore that we stopped in our way up to Portland, Maine. It has multiple floors and the employees were very friendly. There was a lot of selection, but naturally I was drawn upstairs to my favorite section.... The adventure and travel books! Lots of cute picks; everything from alpining to cave diving to Lonely Planet travel books. It was all reasonably priced. All in all; a very nice local bookstore to support! read more

Bartleby's survived Irene and even seems to have prospered. It is now located in a two-story building in the middle of Wilmington, and the second story has enabled it to grow its already estimable stock of books. It has a good Vermont section, a fairly generous backlist in all areas and a wide choice of small gifts and toys in addition to the books. We found the staff to be friendly and down-to-earth and not at all pushy. It serves not only Wilmington area residents in its convenient location (halfway between Bennington and Brattleboro) but also the second-home crowd and vacationers who come to the area for winter fun. The whole store was really nicely set up and organized, the signs were handwritten, and there were slips of paper in select books saying that they were the manager's picks. Bartleby's Books is the kind of bookstore that makes me feel guilty for owning Kindle. Their collection of books is very thoughtfully curated, featuring a mix of interesting Fiction, gifty stuff, and local information that includes area-specific history and trail guides. The selection of kid's books/ toys only seems to include real quality stuff and, on to of all that, they have a clean bathroom and self serve coffee bar. I love this place. read more

If you are of a type that loves books, who will hole up in the mountains with a book instead of or bookending a nice hike and outing; if you would hole up with a book after being dragged to the mountains; if you just plain love books? You owe it to yourself to stop in here. This is the kind of independent bookstore you'd swear was dying out, but here it's flourishing and vibrant. Their selection is excellent; literary snobs may sniff at a few missing selections, but overall they have a broad variety from the pulp and bestselling reader to those who truly love the written word. They have a nice selection of children's books for the younger crowd and young adult fiction for the slightly older. Bartleby's is more mainstream compared to the ones in Brattleboro, but it isn't staid or safe. It's passionate and loves its product. You'll feel right at home here. read more

Very much a woman's book store. I found a ton of books, but my boyfriend did not find anything. Books seemed to lean toward a female taste.

Bartleby's Books is great! The staff are very knowledgeable and helpful. I love to go here to buy books for kid's birthday parties.
