You immediately get that smell of old books when you walk in. That leather bound scent that just doesn't exist in books that are made now in days. I always wonder about the people who previously owned these books, were they treasured? given by a loved one? These aren't thoughts I contemplate when I'm at Barnes and Nobles. (Don't get me wrong though; I live B&N) It's worth a visit, even if you don't end up buying anything.

AGAIN, I had to deal with…read morethe "Mask Police", as soon as I entered Federal Street Books, the woman (behind a 4 foot high clear plexiglass shield) informed me it's a requirement to have a mask on while in the store. Fine, I complied, just wanted to find some books and get going. I did snag two paperbacks I wanted to purchase, but the same "Mask Cop" was having issues with a customer before me, with the cc machine. So I waited, and waited some more, while suffocating wearing a "face diaper". All that for two paperbacks for around $5 and change, unbelievable. The weird thing about today's "Used bookstore trail in MASS" was that the only books I purchased were at the "mask required" shops, maybe that's because the type of people who purchase the books I'm interested in don't put up with this nonsense ? Well, I put up with the nonsense, and walked away with a few Used paperback deals ! I work in the healthcare industry, and have not worn a mask for a good number of years now. Why these bookstores are requiring masks is beyond my understanding, it's a MYSTERY...I just don't do that genre !

I purchased a book about mushroom foraging by an Appalachian author called "Go Forth and Forage" and by fiancé purchased a helpful guidebook about identifying trees, which is essential to foraging. I read the mushroom book cover to cover and absolutely loved it! The store is very clean, well lit and well organized, although small. I did find the service a bit standoffish and when I purchased the book the woman checking me out just handed it to me with the receipt tucked in, without even asking if I wanted a bag. I guess I this area most people don't want a bag because they charge for them, but like could you let me know that and at least offer one? Seemed odd. Otherwise nice spot and I look forward to returning here next time I am in town.

I walked in and said hello to the lone employee behind the counter, who seemed annoyed that anyone would speak to her. There was also a group of about four teenagers who were talking about the books, laughing and being normal kids. From what I could tell as someone who also used to work in a bookstore, they weren't being disruptive at all and sounded like they were talking about school assignments, among other things. A few minutes into my visit, the lone employee, an older woman, curtly told the group of kids to leave. I left soon after, and as I later said to one of the co-owners over the phone, that's how five potential customers turns to zero. What's the point of running/working in any business if you're put out by any and every customer? Is this the secret to small business success in a town where every other storefront is shuttered?

When I walked in to the shop, I actually asked where the "used" book section was, and the helpful woman replied" they are all used"! I had to take a second and third glance around as the store was impeccably tidy and books appeared seemingly new. Fairly priced at 4-6 dollars for a typical book, larger coffee table type reading a bit more. I picked up 2 memoirs and one was signed by the author. Books are divided into sections making the search a bit easier if you have a genre in mind. If you are in town, take a step in and say hello !

They have old classics in fantastic condition, and the newest selections with everything in between. Boswell is the cutest cat who I had the pleasure of being followed by during my 30 minute visit. I was browsing when this beautiful black-and-white cat came strolling up to me from laying in the window. They also have Boswell souvenirs, such as gift cards and mugs. We played while I browsed, and she was so friendly at 12 years old! She was incredibly sweet and made this experience 11/10. They have an amazing selection of vintage books in amazing quality, which was my second favorite part of this store. Maria + Joe were fantastic guides, and there was no pressure to buy at all, although I couldn't resist supporting this awesome store. I will 100% return when I visit again. One of my all-time favorite bookstores!…read more As you're walking along the street, you may notice a sandwich board with a pointer finger directing you upstairs in a building in downtown Bennington. This is your best indicator that they're open. Otherwise you might not notice this hidden gem because it's upstairs in an office building. But as soon as you make it through the door, you won't regret having come! It's clear to see that these guys have a good time with their shop. There are labels for sections and parts of the store that could only grow out of fondness, like "The Cave" for the small little room that sits next to the check-out desk, where the psychology and sci-fi books are housed. Love the combo. Or "The Treasure Chest" for overflow books, so varied and ever changing, that you never know what you might find. They have an ever-changing new arrivals section, displaying some of the more popular current novels, which is a great place to look for recommendations. They also have a great children's section, with old readers from quite a while back. Their foreign language section is pretty limited, but that's the case with most bookstores. There were some beautiful old books in German last time I was there. They have a great new england and Vermont section, though I can't admit to having browsed it very thoroughly. Amazingly, they also order books for you if they don't have something. A very kind service. It's worth a visit to this wonderful used bookstore. It's surprisingly large, and full of a huge variety of books.

It has a wide and eclectic selection, reasonably priced ... and that's not even counting the large $1.00 racks outside the door, from which my wife and I grabbed six books, a far higher haul than such discount racks usually provide us. We left with a full backpack, and would have bought several more if our weekly budget had allowed. The owner was courteous and helpful, and we will certainly be back.

Textbooks were still being stocked by staff. My daughter took no time locating several items that worked for her. My son had a harder time. At the end both found shirts that they liked. Checkout was very friendly by the young student staff.
