Along the way we came across what appeared to be a junkyard on the side of the road. Intrigued, we pulled off to explore and boy was I glad we did. The place was WILD. Full of creepy circus decor, unusual structures like carousel pieces, and SO many mannequins. It left a mark in my brain but alas this was pre-smart phone so I didn't make a note of it in the moment. I didn't check in. I didn't have geotagged photos. For years I couldn't remember the name of it, where it was, I wasn't even particularly sure it was off Blue Star Highway. Was it still around? Was just a fever dream? This year was the year I decided to finally try and find it. Lucky for me, it was actually pretty darn easy. Why did I wait so long?? It was so unusual that I was surprised that not only did they have a Yelp page but I wouldn't have even been the first to review. Now, with address in hand, we plugged it into our phone during our last trip to Saugatuck and away went. It was there! OK. So here's the deal. Even after having been here again recently it's hard to put this place into words. I think photos do a better job of showing you what this place is like than words but I'll try. In a nutshell it's a wonderfully weird collection of random pieces like mannequins, antique furniture, borderline creepy art pieces and curiosities, and mechanical equipment and hardware pieces. Most everything is outdoors and exposed to the elements so things are worn and rusted and I loved looking at every piece of it. There are a few barns/outbuildings with collections inside and one main "shop" where you check out with your purchases. Here are more delicate pieces like clothing, unique furniture, paper products, framed and unframed art, books, etc. Here a painting of of 60 Minutes anchor Leslie Stahl hangs on one wall above a stack of old sheet music and LIFE magazines. A box of door knobs sits next to a crate of dusty records. A beautiful kite/sculpture hybrid of a mermaid hangs from the ceiling above an old church confessional box. It was so fun digging through every weird, occasionally creepy, but always wonderful piece. Did I buy anything? No. Will I ever buy anything? Most likely not because of space concerns (though I was tempted by that mermaid kite). But do I love everything I saw here in it's own way? Absolutely. I'm so glad to have rediscovered this place and we will definitely be adding it to our checklist of things we do every time we visit the area. Can't wait to see what curiosities we uncover next!

Just to name a few things we say: Old horse carriage, assortment of old wood doors, art work, glass jars, old beds, antique tools, old sheet music... a weird giant figure standing in a tree with a decayed head... This is just one of those places you always stop at - some times you find nothing, but every once in a while you are just so thrilled with what you find, you can't get over your good luck. :-)

Outside, and over a large swath of the business grounds, you can find a variety of cute and colorful metallic sculptures of animals, mythical creatures, dinos, and more. Plus structures like palm trees, giant and small mushrooms, etc. Most are for sale but some of the larger pieces are not at they're mostly for display. I don't even know how you would move some of them without a truck or where the average person would even put a 12 foot metallic giraffe. But they sure are cool to look at. The pieces for sale are all marked with colored tape and at the entrance (and a few other spots throughout) they have signs that outline what each color corresponds to price wise. They encourage you to take a picture of this sign which I also encourage as it makes it much easier to quickly identify price points of the piece you may like. The prices range from around 40-50 for smaller pieces around 12-18 inches all the way up to over a thousand for some of the larger pieces about 5-6 feet high. I know this seems like a lot but my understanding is that these are all made by artisans and for an art sculpture I think it's actually fair pricing. My only concern would be how well do these metals hold up in inclement weather. Some were already rusting (which is kind of part of the vibe/style) so I would definitely want to bring those in for the winter. Around the space are also several barns and structures that hold more traditional antiques. These barns are not particularly organized and a lot of the pieces are not in great condition but I definitely saw more than a few things that piqued my interest. There are also quite a few metal flower spinners, concrete lawn ornaments, bird houses, and planter holders/hangers in cute shapes like umbrellas, or tiered benches. In the end I didn't buy anything as a lot of it was a bit too rich for my blood but I was inspired by the space and the artwork within, and the whimsical, colorful animal pieces are definitely in my decorative wheelhouse. If I have a bit of cash to splurge and I'm in the market to add something to my yard I'd definitely come here to make it happen. btw-- if anyone wants to gift me one one of those giant mushrooms in my photos I wouldn't be upset about it. ;)
