This place is so near and dear to my heart!! The yoga is amazing. I love the unpredictability of taking the vinyasa classes. I also really love the pose variation and the sometimes more stretchy liquidy feel of the flows. Mara is without a doubt the best instructor I've gotten to practice with; her cues are so clear and make you engage muscles/soften things you didn't even notice, and her guidance is so gentle and suggestive that it isn't as "now this now this now this" as sometimes classes can feel. I look forward to her class all week I almost feel myself chilllllll out as I walk in on Sundays. Another really important thing for me is that NP Rock is most welcoming, non-elitist, accepting yoga community and it's so purposeful that it makes me want to contribute to the feeling, too. The no judgement really allows me to just show up and focus on myself and my own practice. The energy of this place is so genuine and special and I can't recommend it enough. I just recently visited NP Rock Yoga for the very first time and absolutely loved it! The space is beautiful, calm, tranquil. The changing room and shower are on point - spacious and clean. And most important (for me :) the vibe here is open and genuine, and Mara is so full of knowledge. With yoga becoming more and more popular these days, teachings can get diluted, but not the case here. It's the real deal! Ever since I met Mara she has show me what it means to teach from the heart. She sees her students, she cares deeply, and she gives all of herself to this practice. This place is truly a gem (an affordable one!) Will for sure be back. read more

I had the opportunity to practice here the other day as I was passing thru town and found myself charmed by this beautiful and tranquil studio. Brian was the special guest yoga instructor from NYC (Yoohoo! That's close to me!); one of the most intuitive yoga instructors I have met in the recent years; a true yogi and a compassionate soul. The space is beautifully set up with nice wooden floors and lots of natural light (and plenty of fresh air when needed). The main practice room was spacious and modern wrapped around with mirrors. (Which I really like!) I noticed they have special heating systems on the ceiling which explains the steady radiating heat in the room (I do a lot of heated classes in NY/NJ area so I notice these things). I even took the time to use the shower facility so I was able to see every corner of the studio and it was absolutely spotless! Bravo to the staff! The real treat was meeting John, the owner who was so gracious and accommodating. You can really feel TLC at NP Rock Yoga! I plan to make a special trip back to New Paltz area to explore Mohonk Mountain and return to NP Rock Yoga again in the very near future! There is nowhere like this place. It is clean. Laid out nicely. They have heating panels, so the heat is consistent and there's no whir of heaters. It always smells fresh and wonderful. The instructors are so amazing. BUT, I'm a huge stickler for customer service, and I have to say the instructors are not the most "warm". Some are better than others, but there's always a general feeling of "ugh more human interaction" when you walk in the door. Also, I know it's not anyone's place to touch on proper human hygiene, but it's New Paltz. There are some MAJOR hippies here, who are going to have nasty hobbit feet in your face, not shave their pits and smell like a garbage dump. PLEASE, have some shame. Get a pedi and put deodorant on. It's distracting to others in class. read more

NP Rock was a lovely little yoga studio with a fantastic teacher. My GF and I were up in New Paltz for a weekend getaway, and stumble upon NP Rock yoga, and decided to take a class. The mens changing room was very clean, it had its own bathroom, and shower. I always love a shower after a yoga class. I'm a guy, I sweat a lot, so going to a studio that has a shower is a big plus! The studio itself was a nice size. There were only 6 of us in class, but we could have easily fit 15 more people or so in the room. I do prefer smaller classes because teachers tend to give you more attention and in this case I was adjusted more than once if I recall correctly. Lastly I like that the welcome desk and actual practice space were different rooms. nothing worse than walking into a small yoga studio that is just one room where you have to change, pay and practice. NP Rock Yoga, has all the amenities of a big Studio, with a small studio vibe. Did I mention they had coconut water for sale? A nice touch was that they had a water cooler so bring your own bottle, and you wont have to pay for water. read more

I moved to Poughkeepsie a few months ago, from Brooklyn, and struggled to find a hot yoga studio that felt like home. I practiced at a studio in Brooklyn that I also taught dance at, and the yoga classes were always challenging and the people were always warm. This place feels like my home studio, in an aesthetic sense. The studio is state-of-the-art, sunny- even the logo feels familiar; the classes are usually perfectly challenging. The people here are mostly friendly; its no Brooklyn though- its not a mixed crowd. Its mostly college students and women. So of course I miss that. I consider Hudson River Yoga to be my go-to studio near my new house, or the place I go if i want to be with kindred spirits. NP Rock is the place I go to bust my butt. The really frustrating thing about NP Rock is they have a "no teachers on the schedule" policy. And they attribute that to wanting you as the student to be out of your comfort zone. And that would be just fine if all instructors were created equal, but they're just not. Different strokes for different folks, and if I'm paying my way on a spiritual journey, I think I should be able to decide who I want leading me. I'm okay with every now and then going to a class with an instructor I don't connect with- if i need my yoga fix or they are subbing- but I certainly don't want to feel disappointed when I get to class or even worry who will be teaching (especially if I'm in a crap mood). That does nothing to calm my mind, it simply tests my patience. And I drive 30 minutes to get here, so just opting out isn't really an option. The truth is this place has some awesome instructors- I especially love Maggie and the short, brown-haired girl whose name escapes me- they're amazing, and they always end up getting me limber and mellowed out! Rock also has awesome guest instructors from the city! But I sort of see this scheduling policy as a cop-out. I don't think they want students to flock to one instructor over the others, but really that wouldn't happen anyway. Different people seek different things at different times... read more

Home away from home. Look no further, Rock Yoga is the best studio in town. On a scale of 1-10 I would give this studio a 9.5. The professional staff members always go out of their way each and every time to make you feel at home. This studio is brimming with knowledge and experience and never skips a beat. I enjoy the mastery and expertise and the challenge of what each class might bring. That said you will walk away from each practice feeling revitalized, energized and fresh. When I moved to the area I started looking around for a new yoga studio. I tried three, but wound up sticking with this place. It was hands down the most well run studio of all the ones I tried. You can tell a lot of thought went into the space because it feels tranquil, relaxing, and clean. The hardwood floors make a huge difference for me because I don't come home feeling icky (some other places have nasty rugs). Plus, they have clean individual showers/bathrooms which is a must. I took the Hot Power class and it was so great. The tempo is perfect and the teachers are really nice and knowledgeable. If you love hot yoga, this is definitely the place to go. They have some sort of high tech heating system that works remarkably well and holds the temperature. I took a few of their other classes (which were great), but I always seem to come back to hot yoga anyway. There's just no comparison. I would recommend this place for sure. It's helped me keep yoga as a routine part of my life. read more

So nice to have found a high quality, affordable and friendly studio in the hudson valley. I took the 26 + 6 class with Mara and it was exactly what I needed. Clear and specific instruction married with really accessible philosophy that was clearly from Mara's own heart and experience. Great heat and beautiful space. Will definitely be back. The class would not be well suited to a complete yoga beginner. Not because the poses are impossible, just because the guide tells you what pose to move into with very little further guidance. I loved it, but if you didn't already know the poses were named and the shapes you should be attempting to make, it could be confusing. read more

I moved from NYC to New Paltz last summer and was bummed to see there was no Bikram yoga studio nearby (closest studio about 30-40 min. drive). Luckily for me NP Rock Yoga opened up in the fall and is located right on Main Street and offers a 1 1/2 hour hot yoga class, which I actually enjoy a lot more than Bikram. NP's hot yoga class offers some different postures that you would find in a regular yoga class and are great in a hot room (i.e. pigeon, staff pose). They also offer a 1 hr warm yoga class, which is also good if you prefer the room to be cooler and enjoy the sun salutation flow/movement. The studio is really nice - clear that the owners thought carefully on what to invest on. No carpet, which is great, especially for the hot yoga classes (if you have been to Bikram classes with carpet you know what I mean - stinky!). Cedar wood lines one wall of the studio, which gives the studio a calming and refreshing smell, even when it gets hot. Mirrors on two walls, which lets you get good views of your postures. The main instructor is one of the owners and is really great (soothing voice, clear instructions). The only reason for the 4 stars and not 5 is the schedule. I don't go as often as I would like to because the studio's schedule doesn't quite work for me during the work week. Morning classes should be earlier (7:30 a.m.) to allow people to get to work on time (assuming most start work around 9 a.m.) and it would be nice if there was a lunch hour class (60 minute hot yoga around 1 p.m.?). Of course, they are just getting started so it may take some time to get enough instructors and also making a schedule that accommodates everyone is pretty much impossible. Anyway, great studio and classes, highly recommend giving it a try. read more

I have been practicing yoga since I was 14 but practicing at NP Yoga is something magical. A worrier by nature and scared to walk in since I couldn't even touch my toes, surprisingly I felt welcomed into the space immediately and it become a sanctuary for figuring out my life stuffs and connecting to the supportive community of all levels that I would see in class. The teachers, whether regular or visiting, are ridiculously down to earth and interested in each student's potential. The studio space is clean and calm so that you can leave your worries at the door and discover how to live life skillfully out of the class. This made me a better friend/daughter/student/sister/etc., eventually helped me touch my toes, and left me feeling inspired. I was lucky enough to undergo the Teacher Training this past summer and I have already began teaching with a confidence in myself that was missing. It was comprehensive and addressed everything from Sanskrit to safety to modifications to style to dialogue in class to the Yoga Sutras to injuries to breathework and so much more. Julie, Carla, and Brian seriously rocked it (pun intended) with their knowledge and honesty with how we could improve and the guest teachers were unbelievable. I couldn't believe how much information and support we had access to in a 200 hour training. Even though I still have so much to learn (for which I am grateful), NP Rock created the space for me to really get started with my practice and offer the best version of myself to others. It was definitely worth the price! After over 2 years of attending classes at this studio, I feel healthier, happier, and thankful. I only left because I left the area (but I'm still going to sneak up for visits as much as I can!) So much love for the teachers, and all of the yogis I met in this beautiful space! I have been to many of the other studios in new paltz and throughout the Hudson Valley and NProck really takes the extra step in making all new comers feel welcome. Beautiful, state-of-art, hot yoga studio with incredible instructors and a low carbon-footprint! It's a very straightforward layout, a foyer to take off shoes, sign in, and hang jackets (you can also rent mats, towels, and buy water if you forget), there are male/female locker rooms to stash your valuables and a change of clothes after class, with a bathroom and a single shower in each locker room. There is a single radiant-heated room, that I've seen hold up to 30 people-packed tightly with yoga mats like towels lined on a hot and crowded beach. This is usually during the Happy Hour 2 for 1 classes when lots of students take advantage of the discount. I'd say average class has about 15-20 people give or take. I absolutely LOVE the "Vitality Flow" class. Take this class if you get the chance! The instructor pushes you physically and spiritually and incorporates very liberating, profound visualizations that stay with you for weeks! read more

NP Rock Yoga is a great addition to my life. Been going @ least twice a week since November and wish I could work more classes into my schedule. Prior to starting, I'd only taken a couple of yoga classes...and, I'm hooked on the warm/hot classes. The facility is immaculate...the instructors & owners are great, offering alternative poses when needed...and, the radiant heating system makes for a productive practice. I found this studio and instructors to be both appropriate for new yogis and extremely comprehensive for more advanced students. Rock has a way of making everyone who attends feel welcome. Whether a first time student or a regular practitioner, they welcome with open arms. The classes are consistently challenging while the flows are always changing. Aside from the regular teachers on the schedule, they also host a number of wonderful guest instructors for weekend workshops and the like. I have taken every class at Rock, and evey instructor brings their own flavor into the room, and let me say, the very very hot room... hot is good! I reccommend Rock yoga to the community, but also to anyone visiting the New Paltz area. They have great hours and the price is exceptional, worth every penny... When I started coming to Rock I had never taken a yoga class and I didn't know a single pose. I couldn't touch my toes. I couldn't close my eyes in any pose without falling over. Luckily, no one seemed to notice or care that I was a spaz, and I never felt embarrassed or uncomortable. Over the past two years I have been led slowly on a path towards strength, flexibility, and meditation (still working on the balance and grace thing) and can absolutely say that I am a happier, healthier person since finding Rock Yoga. read more
