Designed for probably no more than 18-20 people, at first glance it looks like a big hot tub or trampoline in the River. In some ways it's a bit of both. You'll find it by meandering your way past the parking lot, beyond the sand volleyball courts, and past the basketball court to the aluminum ramp at the north edge of the park overlooking the bridge. Thankfully, the aluminum ramp means you don't need to climb sharp rocks or weed through lillypads to get into the water, instead you just walk right into the little rainbow colored plastic pool ring and land on a nylon netting that prevents you from walking on river mud. On a hot August day, it's a refreshing way to cool off and enjoy the park. You'd think that would make it busy, but in the prime afternoon heat on a Saturday, there were only 6 people in the pool, with a couple parents on the sidelines. Just in case you need a bit of privacy before getting in the pool, there are porta potties and even a curtained changing area. So many conveniences, and all without park fees. A gem for families in Beacon and for visitors who want to expand their stay beyond Dia and Main St. Bonus tip: go on Sunday and make a picnic from vendors at the local farmer's market on the river dock.

The pool is accessible only to Clarkstown residents and their guests, so if you're not a resident befriend someone who is. You must obtain a Clarkstown resident ID card first at the registration office at 31 Zukor Road in New City. (The pool won't simply accept a driver's license.) Rates can be either daily or seasonal for individuals or family, and are very reasonable compared to similar community pools.

On a recent visit it was nice to see that the previous snake-ridden den of iniquity has long been been replaced with a legitimate pool and that the mythological beasts of years past have been slayed by chlorine and actual cement walls. You can even see right to the bottom. What a concept. This is what Nanuet Lake should have been like all along... no thanks whatsoever to my parents who thought this was some tough love version of Shangri La, albeit minus the all consuming bliss one often finds in paradise. I kid about my parents (almost) and am happy to bestow five easy stars for a childhood reclaimed. I still hate snakes.

The yoga classes and studio at Hudson Valley Healing Center are the areas best kept secret and shouldn't be! I'd been looking for a yoga studio that was welcoming and not intimidating. I've had classes with Ami, Ellen and Sara and with each instructor I learn something new with each session. Ami helps her students understand the importance of proper body alignment in and out of class; as well as what controlling your breath can do not only during your practice, but in everyday life. Ellen encourages her students to try new things, She adapts the flow and pace as necessary (while breaking a sweat) and before you realize - it's Savasana. Sara's Aroma and Hatha classes are challenging and energizing! She's generous with her knowledge, explanations of poses and how they help the body. She emphasizes strength building and practice, practice, practice. Her enthusiasm and dedication for yoga is contagious. The aroma at the end of the class is a bonus too! Elisa has assembled an amazing team of Yogis - each class is different, the instructors welcoming, encouraging and incredibly knowledgeable and attentive to their students individual needs and abilities on all levels. There's also a lovely selection of yoga gear and essential oils along with other thoughtful gifts in the shop. read more

My experience at the salt cave was way above expectations; the entire healing arts center is pristine, yet cozy and welcoming. I have been to two sessions, one in which the gong was played in the room. During both experiences, it almost felt like time was warped; the ocean sounds and beautiful twinkling lights on the ceiling put you in a zen state very quickly, almost to the point where you forget time itself and feel like you're floating. I also noticed during both sessions pulsing feelings in me, almost electrical; the salt ions seem to be doing something for sure! I always have left the caves feeling in an extreme serene state, one that I only usually experience after long meditation sessions. I'd recommend the salt cave for anyone who needs to turn off their brains, an electronic detox, to discharge any negative ions (leading to many health benefits), or simply to relax in a incredibly unique environment. Amazing space, friendly staff, quality products and services... it does not get any better than this! Hudson Valley Healing Center has it all and something for everyone. Besides the extensive yoga class offerings, there is the Ashtanga Yoga Poughkeepsie ran by Samantha Lucas, numerous workshops and events (reiki, soundshealing, mindfulness), and of course the salt cave, which is truly something you have to experience for yourself, as words don't do it justice. So excited to have this place open up in the Hudson Valley, what a great place to start (or continue) your healing journey. I am so grateful that a place like this exists in the Hudson Valley. It is a wonderful place catering to all the needs of healing and recalibrating. Aside from all their wonderful healing services, the salt cave is one the most amazing experiences I have ever had. Elisa and her staff are incredible! Anything you need to improve your day to day can be found here! I've been suffering from a TBI and through my recovery I have been to HVHC almost every other week to use the Hyperbaric Chamber and get IV hydration. What a fabulous experience. The salt cave... ahh so peaceful, the oxygen bar was so energizing, we did the light therapy and the chakra mat(like having a giant heating pad from neck to ankle).
