2.5 stars. I bought a pair of AF1s from NRML. It came after 3 weeks of hard waiting, but when they came, I was disappointed to find a pair of completely different pair of shoes. Size and colour same, but they gave me a different design. When I emailed them, they said they were out of stock for the shoes I was hoping for. They did offer a refund and free shipping for the next purchase, %15 off, or to trade in with another pair. I chose the refund, because at that point I didn't trust them to get my order in a timely and accurate manner. The reviews are a little too harsh in my opinion, or they truly got service deserving of 1 star. My service was mid, could've been better, but wasn't worse. While visiting a friend in town for their birthday, I wanted to check out what is apparently a burgeoning sneaker scene in the quiet city of Ottawa. It's a pretty conservative town for business and I was surprised that there were as many specialty stores as there were in the mall and in general. After I'd mentioned what places I'd heard about and wanted to check out, a friend said to check this place out as it was a good shop for sneakers. First off, the layout is amazing. I do think they should have made it a wall of sneakers in one place, all along the east wall of the store, but I also like how they wanted to do things differently and not be the same as all the other stores. The islands they have of 50% off shoes and merchandise is nice. It's a bit less clear which is the women's and which is the men's side, but look around for a few minutes and it becomes evident. And there's so much product. From the sneaks to Jordan Keychains from Shoobox and mini kicks with their own shoebox or Nike shoebox keychains, it is off the hook good, here. The service was the reason it's not 5 stars. It wasn't bad, but during my visit, I found getting people to help me buy $200 sneakers was like pulling teeth. Not just here, but every sneaker store. Most of the time when you walk into a Footlocker or Champs they're on you in about two seconds, but in Ottawa? Out of 8 or so stores I went to, only two asked at any point, if I needed a size. Don't they work on commission? Anyhow, the girl who ended up helping me was very friendly, but I had to seek her out and very deliberately engage conversation for her to help me. Strange. Still, great store. I ordered a pair of Jordan 1's and they arrived in a day. They charge for delivery which I wasn't a huge fan of, but it is FedEx and again, you get your kicks quick. After reading all of the reviews I see I'm not the only one that received bad customer service and the store does not seem to care. Purchased two pairs of sneakers online to pick up in store. One for me and one for my husband. When I picked them up I asked the employee if they did not fit my husband could we return. Yes was the answer. Sneakers are too big. Went back to the store to return or exchange, manager at cash told me I could not do either because they were on sale. I explained that I had asked employee at pick up because if they answer had be no....I would not have purchased. Since when can you not at least exchange or store credit when they dont fit. The worst customer service ever. Their website says they ship within 48 hours. I placed my order after hours on Wed, wrote them Sat afternoon to ask to cancel my order as it was time-sensitive. They sent me a shipping notification an hour after receiving my email, followed by an email from the employee saying they'd already shipped it. Canada Post tracking proved what I'd suspected: they created a shipping label on receiving my cancellation request, lied to me that they'd shipped and it was only picked up by Canada Post the following Tue. They suggested in the same email where they said it had already shipped that I should start a return upon receiving my order, knowing that all the items I'd bought were non-returnable as per their return policy. I recently bought a pair of shoes from nrml online, they weren't in the right size so I returned them and purchased the right size. I made the mistake of returning the shoes the wrong box and they said they wouldn't be able to give me a refund... even though the shoes are in perfect condition. In the past Nrml has sent me shoes with scuff marks and shoes in the wrong size, but I continued to shop with them because I wanted to support a Canadian brand and I knew it was a simple mistake. I was only hoping that they could give me that same courtesy. It was a mistake that I continued to support them because now I understand how much of an UNPROFESSIONAL company they are. They're customer service is TERRIBLE. I called their customer service where I explained the situation, saying I understood how I made a mistake, but hoping they could make some sort of exception, even a partly refund to account for the show box( Being that I am a loyal customer). The rep was very rude when I spoke to her, saying that there was nothing they could do and the shoes had already been returned back to me. I decided to speak with the Boss who informed me that the shoes HADNT been shipped back to me yet and explained that he would see what they could do and either email me or call me back. I didn't get any email or call for the rest of the day, INSTEAD the next day I found that they returned the shoes back to me DESPITE SAYING THEY WOULD NOT DO SO. Random exchange policy and very very poor customer service. At the time of purchase, I was told by the NMRL store manager that I would be able to make an exchange on the item I purchased. When I returned a couple of hours later to change to a larger size, I was told by a different store manager that he wouldn't allow it. When I tried to explain, I was told in a condescending tone that I couldn't be right (basically calling me a liar) and that nothing could be done. I could send an email but there were no guarantees. She emailed to enquire about it to which they replied that they got more than expected orders and due to lack of staff order processing is taking time and we can get a refund. No refund was done. The bag policy has to be changed here - it made me feel so uncomfortable! Working in retail, I know theft is always going to be an issue, and will be amplified in the downtown core. With that being said, you're never going to stop theft completely. Forcing customers to leave their bags (even small clutches) at the front store will a)not stop theft entirely and b) make your guests feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. You don't insinuate someone is a criminal as soon as they walk in the door by forcing them to drop their personal belongings....that's a good way to lose a customer. I walked in with my bag, and started up the stairs to the female section. I was frantically stopped by an employee telling me I had to leave my bag behind the cash....without a greeting of any sort. In fairness, he did apologize for this rude interaction. However, by the time he apologized I was already embarrassed and wanted to get the hell out. When I got up stairs, the woman was so desperate for me to cash out with her (I'm assuming for commission or sales per hour reasonings) however, I couldn't because my wallet was downstairs behind the cash. She suggested that I go downstairs, get my wallet, come back, and finish the transaction with her. Is that a joke? I quickly purchased the shirt I wanted and left. I won't be returning. It's a shame because I really like nrmls merchandise. With that being said, I'd rather shop somewhere that I'm not immediately labelled a thief and I can shop in a non stressful environment - especially if I'm paying a pretty penny. read more

This place is the absolute best sneaker store in town! There's a great selection of hard to find in any other store sneakers in here. They have a lot of great styles and their other items aren't bad either. I'd recommend this place if you are looking for sneakers with style. As a business, I respect what they have done. Norml is a great staple in Ottawa ready-to-wear clothing with many great brands like: Vans, Naked & Famous, Billionaire Boys Club, Fred Perry, and its many custom Nike's. The business has grown tremendously over the years with a supreme and loyal clientel, but I cannot say that I know why in particular. For example, you walk in and no one says hi to you. You take a gander around and everybody seems to be occupied with something more important than helping you. You find something you're looking for, but you don't know where to go and try it on. Then you find yourself looking for people to help you, but even when they do help you, it seems like they want nothing to do with you. For me, customer service is 100% of the business. You can bring in all the great brands you want, but if you don't have any customer service then I don't know how you can expect me to buy. Nevertheless, everything that I have bought at Norml, I still have. From my Lacoste V-necks, to my Naked & Famous denims, to my Alife sneaks. I got to say that I love what they sell. I have been looking for a Reigning Champ hoodie on sale online almost two weeks so when Nrml has a clearance sale over the long weekend I jumped at my chance to place an order. In my haste I forgot to add a unit no. For delivery and within an hour of emailing their support team on Sunday they had updated my order. Then on Monday of Thanksgiving holiday they announced an additional 20% sale. I was kind of peeved bc I had order the day before and I emailed support again and on Tuesday morning I got an email alert saying they had issued a refund for the 20% discount to my credit card. My hoodie arrived today and it's freaking awesome, plus I got a gigantic free NRML mousepad. Seriously overall these guys have won a customer for life - all the way in Toronto. Extremely over-priced! The absolute worst customer service I have ever encountered at any retail store. It's like pulling teeth to get someone to help you. Their 'Sales' are extremely deceptive (especially during boxing day). If you plan to go shopping there on boxing day dont! They make their customers wait outside in the cold for a sale that they don't even honour when you get to the cash. The staff are extremely rude! Also, several people I know have had issues with their credit cards after purchasing something at this store. So if you absolutely must buy something there be careful and pay with cash.
