I travel for work months at a time so I find it difficult to schedule things too far in advance. I had cracked a crown while on the road and was heading back to Portland around Christmas. I was a new resident of Portland and had not secured any medical professionals in the area before my travel, so I needed to do some research. I found Nuance Dental, gave them a call and they managed to fit me in. Mind you, I was a new patient asking to get in a few days before Christmas! If my memory serves me right, I don't even think they were working/open that day! I was thankful that they made the arrangements to see me and get me comfortable enough through the holiday and to my next appointment. Fast forward, I needed to get in for some work before hitting the road for 3 months, yet again. I did not give them much of a window for time. Initially, there was no way Dr. Cone could see me. This was right after they reopened due to Covid and everyone was making appointments. Then, I received a call and they managed to work something out just days prior to my departure. That is twice now that they have found a way to accommodate me and my schedule. Dr. Cone is really talented and talks you through everything. There is a lot of attention to detail which I'm sure we all can appreciate given its our smile! Both he and Cornelia are kind and easy people to talk to. The space is clean and comfortable and does not have that "doctors office" feeling. I would absolutely recommend Nuance Dental to anyone needing work, a cleaning, whitening, a consultation or other in the Portland Maine area. read more

I've been using Nuance for the past two years.. They rescued me from some negligible dental advice and took me in as a patient to correct serious problems and have made my smile outstanding. They are a dental office that LISTENS and sincerely cares. They only use the most current high quality materials AND the most innovative, and creative technology. Arrived from Out of state yesterday and having severe tooth pain. Sent an email and left a phone message on Sunday afternoon with the office. Within hours, Dr. Miles Cone responded personally and recommended a good friend and colleague who does these type procedures. Dr Cone said he would follow up with me as well to make sure everything went well the following day. ***Update: On 11/1 I received an extremely apologetic email (and missed call) from Cornelia, saying that my timeline of events checked out and I was right and how sorry she was that she was not in the office to vouch for me, inviting me to call if I'd like to discuss it further. On 11/13 Dr. Cone responded to my review, thanking me for my honesty. I appreciate Cornelia's sincerity (her kindness and sincerity was never in question), and I admire any business owner for welcoming honest feedback, however my concern was with Dr. Cone's seeming indifference towards the fact that my time is valuable. Mistakes happen - I wasn't as concerned with the fact that they accidentally didn't get my appointment in their database, but rather that he didn't apologize for it at the time or take it seriously enough then to make it better, and even now he hasn't apologized as you can see in his response, yet his wife, Cornelia, wrote out a profuse apology when she didn't even do anything to merit such an apology. **** This is unfortunately an update from my previous 5 star review. While my first experience left me feeling like Nuance is really aware of and concerned about the patient's experience, my next visit gave me the opposite impression. I had my first initial appointment that I previously reviewed as a 5 star experience in early May, and a number of issues (mostly fillings) were identified that needed to be addressed. When checking out, we set an appointment to take care of these for June when I was going to be returning from vacation (the very kind Cornelia even talked to be about my vacation and mentioned she'd look forward to hearing how it was when I would return for my June appointment). She asked if I wanted an appointment reminder card, and I declined since I already entered it in my google calendar on my phone. I did ask if she could send me an email detailing how much she anticipated the cost being for the next appointment, and that same day I received an email with an attachment entitled "Treatment Plan for June Appointment." About a month and a half later, I show up for my 9am appointment in late June. Dr. Cone is in a sitting room area of the office meeting with a young woman; they are laughing and talking. I wait at the front desk, and he eventually pokes his head out of that area and asks if he can help me, but without approaching the front desk. I say I am there for my 9am appointment, and without referring to any sort of calendar or anything behind the desk, he simply says, "Oh you must mean a 10am appointment, why don't you come back in an hour." My initial reaction was he's the doc so he must be right and I sheepishly head back down the stairs. As I'm leaving I hear the young woman say, "Oh I thought that was your assistant or something" and Dr. Cone scoffs, "Noooo, not her" in a manner almost as if I'm some disgusting specimen of a human being that couldn't possibly be fit to be an assistant at such a place. I'm about to find some place to sit around and wait for an hour in the 80 degree heat, when I re-check my google calendar. I then think about the fact that I just hauled over here from house-sitting way out in Limington and then parked at my West end place and practically ran over in the hot weather to make it here on time. I go back up and ask if I could at least wait somewhere in the office (as I mentioned in the previous review, it is an enormous and beautiful office, so I am surprised he did not offer this in the first place). This time, he decides to check the calendar. He then tells me I'm not even on the schedule for that day at all, and that I must be mistaken. Now I am regretting not getting the appointment card from Cornelia for proof. I ask when my appointment is, according to his system, and he says they were just planning a follow up cleaning for November. (This doesn't make any sense - why would I put off fillings for 7 months?) I reference the email I have from Cornelia about my treatment plan entitled "June Appointment" and since it is the end of June, I ask when else this would be taking place if not today. He again insists I must be confused and never once offers any apology. I simply leave and only received one missed phone call from their office the following day while I was at work, but no message was left, nor any email with any attempt to apologize for the situation. The situation made me feel as though Dr. Cone does not value his patients' time - he was okay with me wasting an hour sitting around for an appointment he wasn't planning on (not to mention the time I wasted in getting there) and couldn't be bothered to even check the schedule nor look into what happened. Very personable, professional, thorough and gentle. Dr. Cone was suggested to me by a local professional dental enterprise when I inquired about restoring a damaged front tooth. Dr. Cone did a phenomenal job of creating a new ceramic veneer to perfectly match the adjacent tooth for a natural look. His large comfortable 3rd floor suites (there's an elevator) are a welcome change from the usual dental office. Street parking in this Old Port location can be difficult, but they will validate your ticket if you use the parking garage around the corner. Dr Cone's approach is conservative and he's great at explaining all options and procedures. I appreciate his honesty; he never tries to up-sell me with a service or procedure that I don't need. His wife manages his practice and she is an upbeat, genuinely pleasant delight. I highly recommend Nuance Dental. read more

I've been a patient at Nuance Dental since 2018 and if I could I would give them ten stars. After years of being self conscious about my smile and dissatisfied with the way composite resin looked on my front teeth, I went to see Dr. Cone for help. Upon the initial consult I knew right away that my expectations were going to be exceeded - this is not your average dentist's office. The entire process, from the initial consult to the final placement of the veneers, was outstanding. All of my questions were answered, concerns heard, I never felt as though anything was rushed, and I actually looked forward to each and every appointment (and still do!) Dr. Cone is meticulous in his work, extremely talented, and undoubtedly passionate about his profession. The porcelain veneers that he was able to fit me with are phenomenal. I still look in the mirror every day amazed that, despite all the different shades and spots on my teeth, these veneers flawlessly blend in. I think even a well-trained eye would have a hard time spotting them. Both Dr. Cone and Cornelia have created a professional and welcoming atmosphere that goes above and beyond. I am so appreciative of the work they do and I highly doubt you'll find another dental specialist anywhere near here that has a standard of care so high. Dental care this good is a rarity. I visited Dr. Cone after having pain, swelling and issues with a previous crown staying on. He fixed it and very shortly after the pain went away with no issues since. The previous Dr. that did the crown couldn't seem to fix it and instead suggested I just do a root canal. Overall an awesome experience with the office environment as well as all of the staff there! read more

The office is exceptionally clean, very comfortable, and Dr. Cone is so personable, it doesn't feel like you're even at the dentist in the best way! I was Dr. Miles Cone's full mouth restoration patient when he was a resident in the Army's Prosthodontics training program at Fort Gordon, GA. I was accepted into the program because I had worn down my teeth due to excessive grinding of my teeth (bruxism). I have 20 crowns, 5 in-lays/on-lays that Dr. Cone did and I still do chew through night guards, however the crowns and bridge Dr. Cone made and inserted have done very well and have not cracked or failed. Dr. Cone was meticulous in evaluating, modelling, and preparing my teeth to receive the crowns, bridge and in-lays/on-lays. His attention to detail is excellent. Dr. Cone asks pertinent questions and listens to the answers to his questions. He communicates and explains the course of treatment in terms a patient understands. One of Dr. Cone's major strengths is his artistic ability. In our discussions about how I wanted my teeth to look led us to choose a natural look versus white chiclets. I was over the age of 40 when we were doing my restoration, teeth age with use and he captured the natural look of teeth for every crown and the bridge for someone my age. The bridge is something very special. My bridge looks like individual teeth that slightly overlap laterally and it looks like natural teeth. Dr. Cone is an innovator who gives a lot of thought to the treatment of his patients. He is always learning and ask questions to expand his knowledge of dentistry and prosthodontics. During my three years of treatment I noted that he would consult colleagues and mentors to insure he was using the best technique to provide the highest level of patient care and satisfaction. Despite my excessive teeth grinding (bruxism) my ceramic crowns have not experienced any deterioration. I wear my night guard every night. If you experience bruxism you must wear your night guard every night, religiously or you will damage your teeth, whether they are your natural teeth or ceramic crowns. Dentists that I have seen since completing my restoration and retiring from the Army have all noted the margins of my crowns and the bridge. They are impressed by the margins of the crowns and they all said that they could not duplicate Dr. Cone's work. These dentists marvel at the structure of my bridge. They all agree that my teeth look natural and don't know about the bridge, until they probe the gum line at the bridge. This speaks to the look of the teeth that Dr. Cone crafted. I had an opportunity to see a Prosthodontist where I live now and it just happened that she was on Dr. Cone's board. She remembered his presentation of my case and was excited to get a chance to examine my restoration work. Dr. Cone's presentation to her and the board had occurred over five years before, that she remembered my case and Dr. Cone's work is impressive and speaks volumes regarding Dr. Cone's abilities. I highly recommend Dr. Miles Cone as a Dentist and Prosthodontist. You will be seeing a Prosthodontist who is highly technically proficient, artistically talented, with an excellent chair side manner. He is personable and explains the course of treatment without sounding aloof. He is always looking for and thinking about the best way to perform a procedure or course of treatment. read more

I purchased a Groupon for Nuance Dental teeth whitening last summer as I had never tried whitening and was curious. The appointment consisted of four 15 minute treatments and I was very happy with the outcome. Dr Cone advised that if I wanted to have another treatment I should wait a few months in between sessions. I purchased another Groupon for them in December and second visit was a bit different. I went into the office 25 minutes early to fill out forms, as the electronic questionnaire sent to my phone did not work, I was told I was the third person to tell them that. My appointment was for 1pm and finally at 1:32 pm I was called in. He did two 15 minutes treatments and when he came to start the third, he asked are you ready for your last treatment? I said oh I thought there were four like last time? He said no there are just three. So I would say two very different visits and I've learned to call a business to find out the specifics before purchasing a groupon read more
