Stopped by on my way home to pick up lunch. This corner market has a restaurant behind the store front and serves a full menu of middle eastern, East African, and East European dishes. I really wanted chicken shawarma so I got the sandwich and a sambusa as well. I hadn't had shawarma in ages and this was as good as I remember, although I don't know if I've had it with tomato and cucumber before. The pita was soft and chewy and held everything together nicely (reheated, open-faced to show contents). The chicken was well-seasoned and the tahini sauce added a nice touch. I'd never had sambusa before but reviews raved about it and it was definitely worth it. Similar to an Indian samosa, it's an Ethiopian version of a triangular pastry fried and filled with ground beef and I think diced onions, carrots, and peas? Cumin is definitely the stand out spice here. I learned about Ras el hanout from a meal kit recipe and this seemed to contain some of those spices as well. Very aromatic and flavorful. I ate it too quick before I could take a photo but it's a perfect appetizer. Aside from delicious shawarma and sambusa, the employee who helped me was friendly and the meal cost $8! I was taken aback for a second wondering if I wasn't charged for the sambusa or something but it was just that good of a deal. I'll need to scope out the groceries for some specialties next time. I popped in here today for lunch as a friend of mine recently brought take away from here and it looked amazing! I had the beef gyro and a sambusa. Both were full of flavor, well balanced, and I found it to be reasonably priced. The staff were very friendly as well, and made me feel welcomed. The grocery store side offered a lot of imported items that are hard to come by anywhere else. I'll definitely be back to purchase some goat or lamb meat! This market and restaurant is a hidden gem in Tucson!! I wish more people knew about this place. The market/grocery area has a huge amount of items to choose from. I could spend all day looking at the various products. They also sell fresh veggies and fruit. Head to the back of the store and you'll find the restaurant (I almost didn't see it when I first walked in). Lots of choices and I feel that the current prices are reasonable. There are some tables and seating for dine in, if you want. Since I lean towards being mostly vegetarian, I chose the falafel plate. Best falafel that I have had in a long time! It was just right and not dry. Without a doubt, the hummus is also the best I have ever had. Pita bread was absolutely delicious, warm and soft. And what can I say... the baklava was great! If you are into the unusual and eating at a small little hole in the wall, then you need to come here and try this place out. The owner of this market\restaurant is super friendly. The food is fresh and he knows how to explain what everything is. To me it has a very Mediterranean overtone with pitas and hummus, fried dumplings and salads. Everything we tried was extremely tasty. The dumpling was like a Samosa filled with ground meat. It came with a red homemade sauce that was a bit spicy. The gentleman also brought out a green sauce and warned us it was made with Thai chilies and cilantro. It was tasty, but a little too much kick for this girl. Still, the best thing of all the goodness, was a coconut wafer cookie that I bought from the store. I could tell it had real coconut cream in it. My only regret is I didn't buy more. Great people, delicious food. This little gem is to die for! I got the chicken shawerma plate and my husband got the beef plate. Portions are huge so be prepared for leftovers. Both plates were flavorful and not too heavy. Currently due to COVID, the dining area is close but you can walk around the market side to kill some time. What great flavors. I hosted a MeetUp group of 14 people and the folks at Nur did a bang-up job taking care of us, including some wonderful humus while we were waiting for our orders. My wife and I had lamb shank, roast goat, and tzatziki. All three were incredible, making this one of my favorite ethnic restaurants in Tucson. It may not be swanky, but this a place to go for the food. I also had some of their chai, which they made specially for me without sugar. YUM. After you eat, indulge yourself in some shopping. There's some great stuff to be had, stuff you won't find in your local grocery. By the way, the staff are very pleasant an accommodating. Tipped $5 on a $20 takeout order. After seeing what I got for my money I regretted tipping 25 percent on this takeout in order. Food quality and portion size are too much of a variable at Nur. First of for all of my Ethiopian fam out there , unless you have some one with a metal hand stove , injera is hard to find. This place is perfect for Injera , great taste and affordable , yes sir check that box. Sambusa how I miss being able to have this treats from the heavens yes sir they have sambusa such great price and these aren't those one bite and go no huge sambusa . To wrap this up , I love this place and I am from Philadelphia and DC. Purchased six of their deep fried extra lean beef Sambusas with the included accompanying sauces.....only $1.50 each. I had only experienced the Indian version, Samosas, which is a favorite when I eat Indian. This was Somalian. So, I had no idea what to expect. On the way home I ate one and it was out of sight! Ate two more when I got home with the green, very spicy sauce. Really scrumptious with spices I have not had before. Seriously, just an incredible delight. They were so good I finished the refrigerated ones several hours later eating them cold. Although a bit oily the taste hit all the right buds. Never tried the red dipping sauce, but at this point I didn't care. I was full, but so very satisfied. Need to return and try some of their very reasonably priced food. Came here on a friend's recommendation for some good Somalian food. This is actually the first time I've had Somalian food, and it did not disappoint. First time I came, I got the gyro because it was a good amount of food for the price, and I was not very hungry. They also have chicken leg quarters, and I ordered that the next time I came. It's certainly a deal, with a lot of food for a great price! For me, I ended up eating it for two meals. It's my low spice tolerance, I ordered the mild version. I did try my friend's extra spicy version, which had a good kick to it, but it was too spicy for me. The chicken itself was moist, and soft enough that it was falling off the bone, and the spices were delicious. It's a bit odd since this restaurant is in a small family-owned store, but don't let the outer appearance fool you--this is definitely a place worth trying! read more

There is a square in Central Tucson that stretches from Swan to Campbell (east to west) and Glen to Broadway (north to south). Within that square is a truly tantalizing concentration of Mediterranean, middle eastern, and North/East African locations that are authentic, cultural, and most importantly, delicious. Nur Market is a quiet, smaller location, doesn't boast the same reputation or notoriety of some other spots in this square. So how does it fare against the likes of proven heavyweights like Babylon Market, Fronimo's or Zayna? Let me say, it fares delightfully. The menu selection includes more well known Mediterranean dishes such as beef or chicken shawarma, falafel, and baklava for dessert. You'll notice right away the distinction between Nur and its neighbors, and I'm inclined to believe it's due to the owners' Somalian heritage that provides a clear distinction. My personal favorite meal includes the beef shawarma sandwich with the French fries (not exactly cultured but get off my back I like French fries). The meat is rich, full of flavor. The bread is soft, but sturdy enough to hold in the mountain of ingredients. And the fries have a splash of seasoning that makes even them stand apart! Crazy! This place is just great all around. The service is always polite and friendly. Food is always ready in a timely manner. Plus there's a market that sells goat for $6 a pound! I'm not savvy enough in the goat market to know if that's a good deal or not, but who cares, where else can you buy goat?! Also, do yourself a solid and grab a sambusa. Apparently, the Somalian owners spent a few yrs in Egypt & honed their cooking skills. U must try their sambusa which is far tastier than an Indian samosa or pakora; made daily it is flaky & filled w/ground beef & seasoning. Small locally owned restaurant/market with delicious food. I ordered the Beef Roast plate it was seasoned to perfection, served with a beautiful vegetable salad and large portion of basmati rice. I love tzaziki so it comes with pita bread and it is perfect with this dish. Their green sauce/ salsa is hot but a nice topping for the beef. Baklava is fresh and delicious!
