Bear in mind that we are Renters, we do not own the house - but we ARE trying to ensure that there is some sort of respectful and considerate attention paid to the property; mainly because we have some pretty damn nice Landlords! That said ... Following my first message with James requesting a yard service estimate, he responded 3 hours later; cool by me! He informed me that he'd "check it out the next day and get back with an estimate" ... 3 days later he finally got back to me, without the estimate but an extensive list of what he'd offer to do (which was beyond what the original service request outlined). Four days after that, he finally stopped by for an in-person meeting. Two days after that, I finally got a quote that was WAY outside of our budget for the desired project. Not cool by me at all. The next day, James contacted me and asked what our budget was for the project. I told him what our numbers were and it was HIM that offered up the cash price that he do the project for. We agreed and established Monday, June 9th as the project day. Monday morning arrives and by 9:00am, there's no NW Yard Services crew at the house yet. A text message was sent to James asking if there had been a schedule change or something that we weren't made aware of. Also, since it was pretty logical to assume that an early start would be used due to the temperatures anticipated in the high 80s - I rather expected some sort of response and/or simple explanation. But when 3:00pm rolled around without ANY response - not a phone call, not a text message, not an email, not even a thanks-but-no-thanks ... it was obvious that we'd been ghosted big time! *** Update: I'm not going to get into a debate on Yelp, but James response that we offered $30 for the additional work is absolutely not true and I have the texts to prove it. He never gave us the opportunity to discuss paying for the additional work. Check out some of the other one star reviews. Good luck James. James seems like a nice guy, but I would not recommend using his services. This is a long review, but I want to be clear on the concerns I have with NW Yard Services. We were selling our house and engaged him to do yard work to get it ready to be on the market. His website indicates that is one of their services and when we met it was made clear that barking the front, edging and clean up of the front and back were to be done to get the home ready for photos. It was also made clear that he would be dealing with our real estate agent as we had would be vacating the home and moving out of state. I did know that there was a bit of a risk when none of the three folks he gave me as references returned my email, but it can be very challenging to get yard services in the area and he had a few decent reviews so I took a chance. There was some back and forth communication, prior to the work needing to be done, related to some clarification of what was needed. That went fairly well. The real problems came in him actually doing the work. I had kept him posted on the timing of putting the house on the market and confirmed a week prior that he would be there on a Monday morning to do the work and the shoot was on that Wednesday. I advised him that my realty agent wanted to have some tree branches removed from over the driveway as an extra task and that the he would be there to let James know which branches. Monday morning comes and James texts my agent to tell him he won't be there until Tuesday. That's cutting it too close and I texted him to ask him to please try to get to the house that day as scheduled. He sent one of his workers to do the work. That person came at a time when my agent was not there. He did the edging and raked leaves, but did not clean up the leaves or touch the back yard. Next day James meets my agent at the house and takes the branches out and rakes removes the bagged leaves in the front. However, for some inexplicable reason he did not bring a blower or a broom. He did not touch the backyard at all, leaving a ton of leaves that had accumulated (which I had agreed to pay extra for) and left a mess in the driveway and sidewalk from where the branches were removed (pine needles everywhere). He told my agent the clean up and the back yard were not part of the work which was absolutely NOT true. I had indicated the branch removal was additional work, so that it would have meant additional payment, but James was apparently not interested in completing the job. We are two states away and were unable to do anything about this on a Tuesday when the photo shoot is the next morning and the house goes on the market that Friday. It ended up my real estate agent had to go get his lawn equipment and finish the work. When I texted James about my dissatisfaction with his work his response was that the branch removal took time that he was not prepared for. No reason given for him ignoring the backyard, not bringing a blower, not cleaning up the mess he left. So, use NW Yard Services if you must, but I would anticipate last minute problems. read more

I noticed some mixed reviews here but I've been happy with James' work over the last year that he has been maintaining my lawn. We don't have a huge lawn, and it's a rental, so our goal is to just keep things cleaned up. I like that James texts me photos every time he finishes mowing and he has always been very responsive via text message. There have been maybe two instances in the last year when he didn't show up when expected, but it was never a big deal (especially since I only get charged after mowing is complete) and again was very responsive when I texted him a reminder. He also was very flexible with us when we decided to space out our mowing schedule in the summer when our lawn went dormant. For what I need, James has been great and I definitely would recommend him. read more

I contacted James because I had a huge mess of a backyard that had been seriously neglected - like nothing done for over 5 years while I was working 80 hours a week. He was the most reasonable and actually took the time to look at the work and explain what it would take to get the job done. The other 2 companies that came out stood by the house and gave ridiculously high prices with provisions that would have allowed them to increase the price at their discretion. I went with James because he showed up on time, listened to what I wanted him to do, and repeated it back to ensure he understood. He got me the quote by the end of the day, just like he said he would. I was very impressed with his communication. He emailed or texted me at the end of each day to let me know what was done and let me know what they planned to do the next day. Communication was better than any contractor I have ever worked with. We had a family construction company for 50+ years, and even our communication was not this good! Suffice it to say, I truly appreciated the great communication and updates. This job was huge! More came up that I wanted done, and he gave me great pricing on the add-on projects. One of those projects included clearing the deck of the junk I had planned to take to the dump. When he was unsure if something was included, he would text me and clarify, which I very much appreciated. He was very detail oriented. I had some plants that I did not like and never planted. I mentioned digging them up and posting them on a plant share group or just tossing them. He ended up digging them up and put them in the old pots I was planning to get rid of; the only thing I had to do was take them to the front yard and post them for people to take. It was great and very helpful of him to do that. I mostly wanted to get the yard done so my Bernedoodle puppy had a safe and fun place to play. I am happy to say she loves her back yard!! She runs her circle path across the deck up the rockery and across the backyard again and again, has her "zoomies" and plays for hours throughout the day. I still have my part to do, but thanks to James and his crew, I now have a blank slate and can return my yard to its previous glory! I would highly recommend this company to anyone looking to have any type of work done in their yard. They have proven to be reliable, communicative, and very good at what they take on. I will likely be hiring them again in the near future for other projects. Thank you, James, for your part in making my backyard livable again. I appreciate it more than I can say! As a business owner, James is unreliable, over promises and under delivers EVERYTIME! I have given him many opportunities to correct his forgetfulness and in return the same problems over and over. He is full of no shows and apologies why he missed his commitment. And it sounds like I'm not the only one he has done this to. After 4 months of failed commitments on a contractual agreement (for which I have already paid for) to finish the work, I know he will not keep his side of the bargain. His exact words were "I'm holding a death certificate in my hand". James you truly are a lowlife scumbag to lie about something like that. You also never offered to have workers come while you were gone. Like my review said you never kept me posted at all, I constantly had to chase you down. And according to another edited review here, you were working on their yard this weekend while you were supposedly out of town... you know, with that "dead Aunt". Lastly, to so far exaggerate on $300-400 more is a joke. You mowed my lawn for the exact same price I've gotten several other quotes on. Never in a million years would anyone else ever be that much to simply mow a quarter acre lawn. Not even close. Please, stay away from this scumbag. IF you can actually get him to show up. Unfortunately, he is extremely unreliable and irresponsible and left me high and dry. From the get go, all I've gotten from him is constant no shows and excuses- there is always something. It seems like he treats this more like a favor he's doing for a friend than an actual business responsibility and obligation. This is my experience with James:  On April 25th he was supposed to come by to give me a quote at 10am, so I scheduled my day around that. At 10:15 I hadn't seen or heard from him so I texted to ask if he was still coming by. Got the response of "Ya, I'll be there around 12:30". When I replied that I had scheduled my day around our 10am appointment I finally got an acknowledgement that he was late- he said his weed whacker was giving him trouble. (Which when he did finally come out, it was instead that someone had stolen his gas can) I went ahead and rescheduled my day when he assured me he'd for sure be there at 12:30. This would have been fine, things understandably happen, but he didn't even at least give me a heads up that he'd be a couple hours late. That should have been my first red flag.  When he came out, we scheduled the first mow for Wed, May 1st. When I texted him the day prior to confirm, I got a text back from him saying he'd "been meaning to text me" and that he couldn't make it and would need to reschedule to Friday.  Ok fine. And he did come by on Friday and did a pretty good job. After the first mow we agreed on every other week mowing, so he would come back in two weeks. Two weeks later, I texted him on Thursday to confirm if he'd still be coming out on Friday. I got no response and he did not show up on Friday. I finally got a text at 11pm Friday night saying that he had a family emergency and was in Canada. Didn't hear anything else, and wasn't given a reschedule date.  After a few days and still not hearing anything else, I texted him because I at least needed a heads up when he'd thought he'd be coming by- I have 2 dogs and need to make sure to clean the yard beforehand. I got a response, again at midnight, that he would be by on Thursday. (So we're now at 3 weeks out since last mow)  Thursday comes and goes, and so does Friday.... And guess what? No James, no text, nothing. His now usual M.O. So I text him Friday night, no response. I call Saturday morning and he doesn't pick up. It's not until I text him commenting that it looks like he's been getting a lot of bad reviews for doing to others what he's doing to me right now and that I didn't think he'd want another bad review. I got an immediate call back at that point. Again, he's got ANOTHER family emergency, and this time he's in St Louis. Claims he'll be out Wednesday. Which is now FOUR weeks since the last mow and the grass is out of control- it's over 6 inches high now at this point.  At this point, I obviously cannot believe or rely on him to actually show up on Wednesday. So now I have to find another landscaper, and pay them DOUBLE because the lawn is so high now because of his continued stringing me along this whole time. He really screwed me and hopefully others can learn from my mistake of trusting him and save themselves the trouble.  Note: Had it just been one time, or just one (or even a couple!) of these things, that would be understandable- life happens. But the constant repeated no shows and no communication is much more than "life happening"- it's just plain unreliable and irresponsible, not to mention selfish and rude. As a business you have an obligation to fulfill and if you cannot do that, then you should not be in business. read more

Try Northwest Yard Services where the complete lack of effort and responsiveness is guaranteed to leave you dissatisfied and annoyed. Here's my honest review: After scheduling a time to come quote my lawn James no showed, no called. Then I reached back out to get a new time for a quote and set up mowing service. Two weeks later on the day when James was supposed to come mow, again no show, no call. I reached out to him again and rescheduled for 5 days later. That day came and went. Surprise! You guessed it, no show, no call. That is 3 times in a row to be ghosted by a landscaper. My fragile ego just can't take it. James, if you're reading this, I'm breaking up with you. To the rest of you, heed my warning. I wish I had read the other reviews that said the same thing before I wasted my time. There are plenty of other businesses who are able to manage their schedule and show up for appointments. UPDATE: James finally came by and completed the work. He did a great job and reduced the fee he quoted me for the poor job his crew initially did. He's a guy who stands behind his work and stepped up when a problem occurred. In spite of the initial issues I can give him a solid recommendation. Previous: James did a great job assessing the work I needed done. We met in person and went over the job. Mow grass, edge sidealks, weed flower bed, trim blackberries, dump clippings at a specified place in my yard. His crew never got the message. They mowed down my flower bed to dirt so no flowers this year and I expect the plants will die, They did not do any edging, did not clean up any grass clippings, did not trim the blackberries, left grass all over the street and my neighbor's driveway. James has said he will replace the flowers and finish the job., It has been a week and nobody has shown up to do the work. I am more than willing to change this review to positive if they step up and finish the job as well as fix the flower bed. read more

Contacted James several times about a quote for mowing services. Kept promising he'd get back to me and never did. When you hire a lawn maintenance person reliability is foremost on the list. Definitely not reliable. The only recommendation I can give is to contact someone else. **Note - I gave the SAME number to James on the phone and in emails. I even sent him another email yesterday morning saying I hadn't received any quotes and to please respond to the email address I'd given him in every correspondence. Not a peep back. He wasted an entire week of promising me he'd go to the property and give me a quote, and never providing one. No specifics shared, no commitments and no prompt responses to a schedule request and details. This is not how you run a business. Originally very responsive through yelp. I called left a VM to see when he could come out to do the work. I was on a time crunch so I sent him messages with photos of the work to be done. He sent me a reasonable quote I agreed to the quote and asked if he could come out and look at it. And I got no response, and he never called back, I ultimately had to do the work myself. He was across town on the east side, but said he could make it in an hour, which I agreed to. I cannot stress strongly enough that James is not the person for the job, whatever it may be. I had a bad experience from day one (when his team didn't show up at all), to the following several weeks worth of work (which should have been done in 2 days tops), to him falsely promising me he could finish the job, to when he finally admitted that he didn't have the right equipment to do it. This was a month after he initially said everything could be done that I had asked. He also ended up charging me more because he didn't correctly estimate how much gravel and mulch would be necessary. Every time James promised his crew would show up at a certain time, it was consistently 2-4 hours later that someone would bother to show up, if at all. He doesn't even have his own workers - they're all for hire daily, so usually was not the same people each day. His communication was terrible and I never knew what was going on. His workers left several pieces of equipment at our house that I told him was there at least 3 times, but now I guess it's ours because no one has picked it up in the last month. I really just can't imagine why he thinks this is a good business model. Will certainly be going elsewhere for future lawn care needs. read more
