I attended an online class with Marcy after finding this wonderful studio on ClassPass. At at this point, I've taken countless yoga classes online around North America. I practice Yin/Restorative, and those classes are way harder to find just in my own community, so I am so appreciative when I find a cool place on ClassPass. Logistically, I appreciated their excellent communication digitally and timely reminders with the class link. In the wonderful world of online classes, some studios just do not have it together, but NY Loves Yoga does. Marcy's Yin class was small and more interactive than the average class. Everyone has their camera on and she will verbally make personalized suggestions and interact with you. Some online classes are more geared towards your camera being off and just blending in, so if that's what you're looking for, just FYI that this isn't it. After class, I had a lovely quick chat with Marcy. She is a super kind person and gave me great suggestions for other classes to try online with NY Loves Yoga. I truly hope I get the chance to visit in-person here in the future. The photos on their social media show a completely enchanting, cozy space that I would never guess is in the hustle and bustle of NY. I've been to this studio and many other NYC studios and this one is just a place I keep coming back to. Hatha with Lucas is just unreal. Truly so many things about it are amazing. The space is beautiful and generally the classes face each other. I like to look out into the garden. Really as a whole the studio has a warm and intimate tone. It is very neighborhood oriented which can easily feel cliquish but just come with an open mind and heart and you will feel the love. Mat rentals are 2 dollars and are jade yoga mats I believe. read more

The studio has a great vibe. Most of the instructors I've taken here are genuinely interested in teaching and paying attention to students' strengths, areas for improvement etc. I practice every day and always mix up my weeks with different types of classes, but am not so much a vinyasa person as a slow flow and power yoga person, and this studio doesn't have a ton of classes (at the times I need, mainly the evenings) on the schedule, so I tend only to go when I'm ready to mix it up. read more

I visited this studio for Musical Flow Yoga with Jazmin back in summer 2017 when I was visiting NY. The vibe was amazing! The room was so simple, yet beautiful, with lots of wood, simple plants and natural sunlight. Jazmin was very detailed in her instruction and felt like a genuine yoga lover. Love this studio. I tried Musical Flow Yoga on a Sunday afternoon as part of Classpass. I love the down-to-earth vibe of this studio, the nice people and instructor. The studio is good for people who want a no-judgement, neighborhood zen studio. The Musical Flow class itself was great. It was the right balance of challenging while being manageable for someone who's been doing yoga for a few years. The teacher is accessible and the room has plenty of space. NY Loves Yoga is an absolutely beautiful studio, but the instructors can be hit or miss. It's very quaint. They have a small check-in area with couches and storage, and one main studio where they lead classes. It really does feel like an enchanted garden. They have a porch and garden area in the back, and though I've never actually seen it used, I like to position my mat facing the garden. It's very calming to look out at that during class, compared to many other studios where I'm forced to look at the busy NYC streets. My favorite teacher is Lucas. His Musical Flow Yoga class is really incredible. He plays guitar at the end of the class, which is such a lovely addition to the class. His class does focus on lunges, so it's definitely not a relaxing vinyasa class, but you will definitely leave the studio feeling rejuvenated and at peace. read more

A year ago I would have given NYLY a full 5 stars, if not more, for all the reasons you'll see here: warm & encouraging environment, unpretentious, clean and nice space. HOWEVER: If you are super serious about development and exploring your potential, you will max out. Originally, they had a very diverse roster of instructors the reflected different techniques, styles and abilities...so it was possible to mix/match and really build up and customize a unique practice. Now (2/2013)...most classes are pretty much based on ashtanga series 1. Those that say 2/3 are really more like 1/2. They have eliminated most of the younger instructors, so for those of us who are in shape and do not have excess injuries, the focus remains on mastering series 1. Certainly there are benefits to this approach; there are also limitations. When I expressed the above concerns to Jose via email, he wrote back an email that, rather than directly addressing my thoughts, skirted around them and told me to instead focus on 'having fun.' While it may be true that we can all benefit from having fun (especially me), it was not the reply I was hoping to receive. But it does encapsulate, I suppose, the current direction of the studio: they are not interested in even entering into a dialogue about a serious yoga practice. So...if you are beginning and/ or have injuries or are not in the shape you'd like to be in...GO FOR IT! You will benefit from this studio. If you are physically fit and looking to develop a disciplined and regular practice...this may not be the place for you. read more

Took class here a few times as part of the new students special that they're offering (great deal!) and I really wanted to like the place, but I just cannot get into it. Jose might be a wonderful teacher, but I witnessed a phone incident in which he was downright rude. Perhaps a call better taken when students aren't within earshot? Other instructors failed to impress, as did the students. In 2011, very Yoga studio in NYC should have a no cell phones policy, period, with signs posted. Get your students into their practices from the moment they walk in your door- and that means no txting on iPhones. read more

First time at this studio, only my 3rd time doing yoga. Was really happy to find a midday Saturday class that was "open level", meaning that anyone of any level of yoga ability or experience could particpate. Frankly, Jose did an absolutely marvelous job of pulling this off, though I was really skeptical of the "mixed-abilities" aspect of the class. My first yoga session here was basically sort of a One-Room Schoolhouse approach, where the instructor adapts, adjusts and personalizes instruction to meet the needs of many different ability levels. I am not sure just any instructor could have managed it so well, and with such kindness, patience and humor. Must agree wtih all other reviewers that the space is lovely - brick walls on two sides, a glass wall at the front of the spacious room with doors opening to a pretty garden, natural sunlight, and fresh air! The garden-view in front must also be soothing on a rainy day... This studio also makes a policy of not overcrowding its practice floor. There was plenty of room and I felt I had more than enough personal space (really hate getting someone else's foot in my mouth; I stick my own in there often enough!). I was delighted to purchase one of their unilimited yoga packages, and can't wait to get my rusty, stiff, getting-too-old-too-soon joints BACK here tomorrow! I know that if I can only keep up the discipline, then NY Loves Yoga will make a new woman out of me before the summer is over! read more

I've been going to Practice Yoga on West 83rd St (between Columbus and Amsterdam) for almost 2 years. I followed Jose Coquenao (Portuguese pronunciation of Jose) from another yoga studio. Jose is now a co-owner of this studio and he is outstanding. I consider myself a novice yoga student, but have progressed and "opened up" considerably thanks to Jose's expert instruction. Here are the benefits of going to Jose: 1) Physical - going 2-3 times per week, your body will change for the better. You will get stronger, be more flexible, and experience and overall sense of well-being. I felt that I gained an extra inch in height and body felt more limber. The higher levels (level 2+) offer a great cardiovascular component as well. I'm dripping with sweat by the end. Even going once a week offers a lot of benefit. 2) Mental - you'll find that your mind will become more calm and centered. The mental benefit actually exceeds the physical. It's hard to explain in words, but the "yoga nidra" attained in Jose's classes far exceeds the effects of any drug (prescription or otherwise). You'll learn to carry this with you in your daily life. 3) Spiritual - this is not an overly "spiritual" studio with a lot of chanting or incense or the like. Jose infuses un-intrusive daily spirituality guideposts throughout the practice that help one achieve calm and well being. He also injects humor to keep things light, which when you're deep in a pose, is greatly appreciated. Overall, an exceptional experience at any yoga level. read more

This is a great studio. Marco's Th evening class was focused, therapeutic and centering, he knows how to fill a room (literally and energy-wise). Accessible yet challenging for pretty much all levels. No crazy inversions or cirque du soleil business. But be prepared to Work, mentally and physically. I enjoyed his class here more than at Ishta -- the small, cozy and welcoming space got super cozy and communal once the sweaty vinyasa hit a sweet spot. The studio space opens out to a floor to ceiling window to a back porch. Nice to look at in downward dog or upward dog, depending on which way you face. Free first class for NY residents! read more

I only recently started taking yoga, but am loving my experience at NY Loves Yoga so far. I live in the neighborhood and have walked by several times. Finally, I decided to take the plunge. I did a free trial class on a Sunday morning with Jose and absolutely loved it. It was my first yoga class in years, so I was very nervous, but the environment was very encouraging. There were students of all levels in the class. The space is beautiful, as many other reviewers have mentioned, but it's really the welcoming environment that is getting me to come back. I have taken classes where I've definitely been the least experienced but I've never felt badly about it or embarrassed. For anyone looking to get into yoga, or try out a new studio, I highly recommend NY Loves Yoga! read more

Great yoga studio I have been taking the 630pm weekday classes (ex-Thursday), as well as weekend classes, for nearly 1 month. Almost without exception, I have thoroughly enjoyed the classes, which have been taught by a variety of teachers. Almost all include a meditative aspect, which I really enjoy. The teachers are extremely knowledgeable, and very welcoming and warm. The front desk staff is also great. Even the other students are enjoyable to be around in class - for the most part, people are focused on their yoga practice and little else. I have been to a couple of other yoga studios in the area, and none of them come even close in terms of quality of teachers and warm ambiance. read more

I recently came here for the first time, for Restorative Yoga on a Friday evening with Michelle (I think?). I wasn't sure what to expect, and had read some of the mixed reviews. It was absolutely the best hour+ of my day/week. For a wonderful, but too brief, period of time, I felt calm, relaxed, and away from the hustle and bustle of NYC. (I'd been so stressed, I started wondering about moving to some rural area or small town--weird for me, since I've always lived in large cities. This class made me feel I could still find peace in NYC, that it could be manageable after all.) I especially loved when Michelle came around occasionally and gave a little scalp massage, or helped me stretch a bit more. It was such a positive and happy start to the weekend. Saturday, I went to Slow Flow Yoga with Von. It was OK, but not my favorite yoga class. I like that he was laid back and encouraged people to have fun/laugh/be a little silly with sounds and breathing. I wish he had provided more guidance for how to do some of the poses, but maybe this wasn't the right level class for me. I also thought "slow flow" would be more relaxing... I don't think I'd enjoy a regular/more vigorous class there. read more

NY Loves Yoga is an incredible place to practice Yoga. I only take classes from Jose because I love the environment he creates in the studio and the calm with which he conducts himself. He constantly fills the class with an awesome sense of humor while guiding each student with a detailed and specific level of expertise. If you can take Jose's classes, do it! I do not even know where to start! I practice yoga everyday twice a day and have been to numerous studios all over the city. NY Loves Yoga is truly the BEST YOGA STUDIO in NYC. It has everything you would every want in a yoga studio. With its loving yoga instructors, beautiful facility, and tremendous amounts of community support, I assure you that you too will fall in love with NY Loves Yoga. When you walk in the door you BECOME FAMILY even if it is your first time! Its not the traditional corporate style studio. The people who come here are extremely welcoming and friendly and all the instructors are amazing, each with their own individual style! Some classes you can get a really good workout but there are other classes where you will just melt away in pure bliss meditative state. If you don't go to NY Loves Yoga your definitely missing out! Gil Katz is a fantastic instructor. I just took the happy hour (every weekday at 5:15 for $10) slow flow vinyasa class and it was excellent. He was very attentive to moving in and out of each position while breathing well and moving carefully so as to prevent injury. Overall, a huge fan of the Yoga workout I get here. However, I don't like that the room is incredibly long, rectangle and narrow so if i get stuck in the back of the room it is almost impossible to see the instructor. In addition, they definitely cram in too many students in as well. But the workout itself is great. read more

I've been practicing twice a week here for two months now, so maybe it's time for a review. I'm always intimidated by small yoga studios, because I feel like everyone else will know what to do--where to get things, etc., and I won't. I'm just shy like that, I guess. The first time I came to a class here, the person working at the desk couldn't have been more helpful and friendly. There's really not much to show around, because this place is tiny! A (spacious enough) studio space, a little reception area, two bathrooms, and a small changing room. I just immediately liked the vibe here. The teachers introduce themselves and ask about your previous yoga experience. My favorite classes so far have been with Brett and with Susan; I've mostly been taking 1/2 classes. I really love how focused they are on alignment, and it's easy to ask questions and get help. They seem genuinely interested in your well-being. I haven't had any experiences with teachers that were too "hands on" here, but I have at other studios, and it's okay to say, "No thank you," when a teacher offers you an adjustment... I've never taken an advanced class here, so I can't really review that. But it's the kind of place that feels like someone is "paying attention," so I gotta think they'd be good... read more

I also followed Jose from his previous studio and have been going to his classes regularly for over 2 years so I couldn't be more pleased that he is now the owner of NY Loves Yoga. The studio is a beautiful and relaxing space and Jose is an excellent teacher. He is warm and kind and has the most positive energy of anyone I have ever met. Jose's classes are always challenging both mentally and physically but his detailed instruction and his ever so slow count down from five to one challenge you to achieve more than you thought you could. I must admit I am a Jose loyalist but I have heard great things about all the instructors so there is no going wrong in any class you choose to take. There are no mirrors but instead a peaceful, beautiful painting on the wall that transports you to a grassy cliff... it's kind of refreshing. Students can show ID and get a discount. Interesting to read the other reviews. I agree that the setting is wonderful (especially on a breezy day. Or if it's a busy class, it's a little more like hot yoga. I mix it up.) I disagree about the rude students...I've found everyone here to be accommodating and have never heard a cell phone go off. Marco--I think he's sort of like the review someone wrote about Tzahi. A bit more of a task master and as more of a novice who has trouble straightening her arms, I was really pushed in his class. I might go again, but I prefer a more calming environment. Jose-I prefer his classes. They may be under-challenging some days, but I feel safe and in a comfortable space. I need this on Sunday afternoons. It's more meditative. NY Loves Yoga should purchase more Jade mats because sometimes they are out and the others are slippery. Also, it is rather expensive and I wish they had an early morning class option. read more

I only have great things to say about this yoga studio. As someone who had taken some time off from yoga and was really feeling the negative affects of that decision on my mind and body, I decided to take advantage of NY Loves Yoga's 30$ for two week deal. My FIRST class, I was already feeling peaceful, happy, and energized. It was like a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders in only an hour and a half! First of all, the teachers are amazing, and all have different styles. Jose is definitely my favorite because of his laid back, open, and genuinely joyful demeanor. He makes the class fun. Yelimar is also great. She's more quite and spiritual, which I like in a Vinyasa teacher. Although I have never taken a class with Tzahi, all of the teachers I've experienced have been great. NY Loves Yoga is definitely a warm, neighborhood place, and the students benefit from this atmosphere. All teachers know your by name by your second time at the studio, and though I'm new, I can tell that the students have formed relationships with one another too, creating an environment in which everyone feesl welcome. Though I have never experienced someone's phone ringing during a class (and have taken a class everyday for the past two weeks), I can imagine that the laid-back atmosphere can explain Irm's experience. In an environment where you would never get yelled at for such a mistake, I think it is an understandable one to make. As Jose said, "There are no soup nazis here," and I think we all benefit from that! read more

My Monday morning is awesome! Yoga first thing in the morning on Monday is so worth it for waking up early. I had music yoga and I booked the class with my class pass. Registration was easy and straightforward. I rented a yoga mat it was about 2 dollars, what I loved about this place is that it had lovely back patio and that's where we were facing the whole time. It was beautiful weather and sometime beautiful birds came to sing during yoga time... It's for sure peaceful time. What I did not like is that yoga instructor did not visually show us what the pose was so I was a little confused about what to do. Warrior pose! Peaceful warrior! Maybe an indication of level for entry level would be nice- keep in mind that the door closes after the yoga starts. I personally like it so that the flow of the class is not interrupted so don't be late! And no cell phone use allowed in the class which I also liked. read more

I've been here once for a restorative class when I needed a little extra relaxation and was so pleased with the experience all around. Though restorative yoga isn't something I think I would do regularly, I did feel I got a lot out of the class and would like to come back and try some of the other classes they offer here as well. First and foremost I was amazed by the sense of community here. People are very friendly and supportive of one another, which was wonderful to see. From the moment you walk in you are greeted and welcomed so warmly and when it was time to leave people actually cared to know how I liked the class and the experience. The instructor I had was so sweet and helpful, explaining everything to us new comers and making us feel comfortable. She did a great job of leading the class and explaining each pose. Aside from coming away with a deep sense of relaxation, I also came away with a better understanding of how to breathe during my yoga practice and that has made such a tremendous difference even in my day to day activities. As others have mentioned the studio itself is very clean and beautiful. Prices seem reasonable and they do offer a student rate as well as a special deal on your first class if you are new to the studio. Despite the fact that it's a little more money and further from my apartment than the studios in my area, I will definitely continue to visit here when I can because I can tell this studio in on another level! read more

I went to the Friday morning (9:30 am) Chakra Flow class with Tara. The studio was wonderful. It happened to be snowing when I was there and they have sliding glass door that lead out to a porch in the front of the studio room, and they had a Christmas tree set up out there. It was so peaceful to have that view of the snow coming down during practice. The studio is a long rectangular room with exposed brick. I loved the studio, but if it was very crowded it might be hard to be in the back of the room. Tara was great, the class was the perfect mix of rejuvenating and challenging. read more

NY Loves Yoga is such a sweet, special studio. I once heard someone describe it as a "one-room schoolhouse" which made me smile. It feels like a wonderful secret garden- especially when you can look out the doors and see what happening outside. Everyone who works there is nice and welcoming- the owner, MJ, always makes an effort to introduce herself to new students. I first came to NY loves yoga to take a class with Christine Chen, who quickly became my favorite teacher in NYC. I took her chakra-tastic flow on a Friday morning and was hooked. Her class flows so smoothly that I barely noticed I was dripping with sweat at the end! I work hard in her class, but it rarely feels like work. There's an ease in Christine's approach that carries over into my practice. I've grown so much in my practice since taking classes with Christine. I always recommend her to friends seeking to start or expand their yoga practice. If you're on the UWS, definitely check out NY Loves Yoga. I have mixed feelings about this studio.... First of all the setting is absolutely beautiful. Brightly colored walls and ceilings, hardwood floors, and of course the infamous garden. I love hearing sounds of birds drifting into the studio and feeling a fresh breeze while I'm practicing yoga. They also have a wonderful new student special... $30 for two weeks of unlimited yoga. Jose is a wonderful teacher and real genuine person. He radiates light and warmth and truly makes everyone feel welcome and accepted at the studio. He leads the class beautifully....begins with a calming meditation opening up the lungs, then leads a flow that warms the body up, transitions smoothly to inversions and finishes with a savasana that will put you to sleep like a baby! He injects humor into class but still offers inspirational mantras. All teachers at the studio are sadly not like Jose. I took a class on a Saturday with Tzahi who seemed to dictate and criticize everything anyone did in the class. Apparently it was "Iyengar" yoga, maybe that had something to do with it. He reprimanded the class saying that we weren't listening when he told us to turn or open up a certain way...saying that "when I repeat something over and over again it means it may be YOU I'm talking to, so you maybe should listen." He just rubbed me the wrong way. I feel yoga should be an accepting and open environment. Yes alignment is important, but he seemed to get frustrated so easily with novice students. Maybe perhaps their bodies cannot contort the way his can. He also stopped the class at least 5 times to have everyone get up and gather around his mat to watch him do poses the "right" way. This interrupted my flow and it just felt tedious. He also had us moving around blocks, the mats and blankets so often I felt I was rearranging my set-up more than I was practicing yoga. He was so OCD that when it came time to use our blankets he told us we all had to have the fringes facing a certain way...This wasn't when we put them away in storage, no... it was when we were using them in class. Why does it matter which way the fringes are facing?! Also I have to say there are some of the most rude students I have ever met at the studio... cell phones going off, walking into the studio in the middle of meditation and asking unnecessary questions to the instructor teaching the class.... So odd. But anyway, this studio is held together solidly by the space and Jose. That is why I couldn't give it less than 4 stars. read more

I only tried the uptown location and the first teacher I had was great so I bought a pass. The second time I had a male teacher who was way too "hands on" and it was icky. The studio itself is lovely but I noticed they only have about 2-3 students in each class on the weekdays so perhaps others people have been turned off as well. read more
