Car buying was fine but the car had a problem and the general manager wouldn't even consider the possibility that they'd made a mistake.

Replaced a brand new timing belt and charged over $900 for it!! My car wasn't even there for that reason!! Context: A couple weeks ago my Honda CRV had a small leak of transmission fluid. The fluid level was also EXTREMELY LOW. We don't typically take my car to O'Brien but they had the quickest appointment time. Dropped the car off the next morning. My Dad handled the communication with O'Brien as he knows more about cars and parts than I do. They stated there was a small pin hole where the transmission fluid is but that the fluid level was good. Which was odd since my dad had checked it twice and it was extremely low so he had them check it again and they said it was fine. There were a few other things that they listed that they check as part of a "bundle" my dad agreed to some and some he said not to do. That was all fine my dad then took my car to a local tire shop to get the tires aligned as that was one of the things my dad had turned down at O'Brien. While at the tire shop he asked the technician to check the transmission fluid level and he said it was EXTREMELY LOW and put more in at no additional cost. When my dad got the bill from O'Brien he noticed a charge for a new timing belt for over $900! The timing belt had just been replaced last year by the mechanic shop we normally take my car to. O'Brien never said anything about it to my dad otherwise he never would have let them replace it!! They refused to give him a refund for it!! This is extremely disappointing as my Dad paid the bill for this on the car that I own. I make ends meet but for something like this would have been very hard to for me to pay. I'm so grateful to have a Dad that is so supportive. So when I heard about this I was extremely furious!!! O'BRIEN HONDA YOU NEED TO DO BETTER!! STOP SCAMMING DECENT HARD WORKING PEOPLE! Unfortunately we learned the hard way and will NEVER be bring another car here again! Had we seen the other reviews we never would have brought my car here. read more

I was super disappointed in the customer service experience I recently had at Honda of Bloomington. TL;DR Poor customer service and long wait times (2-hour oil change with appointment) Earlier this year I bought a Honda at the dealership in Peoria that came with a partial customer care "warranty." The warranty includes two free oil changes at any Honda dealership. Recently, I needed an oil change and scheduled an appointment (via the phone system) in Bloomington since this is where I live. I arrived for my appointment on time, pulled in and all was well. The customer service agent told me how much it would cost. I let him know about the plan and that it should be free. He said he'd look it up (while rolling his eyes) and seemed (to me) put out. He asked for my cell phone number and when I asked how long it'd be he said it'd be an hour. While suprised it would take that long for an oil change only, I still happily went to their (very nice and well-equipped) waiting room to work. As each car was done, a customer service rep would walk in the waiting room and call the person's name to go get their car. (As a reminder, I'm working on my laptop.) After an hour and-a-half and no update (and others coming and going), I stopped an employee who was getting someone else, to ask if he could check on the progress of my car. He said of course and took my name. He came back after 15 minutes to get my name again (because he got busy with phone calls and forgot my name). After a few minutes he came back to get me and said my car was done and had been for a while. I asked why no one came to get me as it seemed that was their protocol. He said, "Oh, we texted you." Wait, WHAT!? Why would you text me when you knew I was waiting? Why would everyone else get in-person notifications and I alone only got a text? IF I would have been told I'd receive a text, I probably would have paid attention to my phone. Not everyone is glued to their phone 24/7. Super disappointed, as I love Hondas and had a good experience in Peoria. I will NOT be back to this dealership for anything and will drive the extra distance to Peoria or another city to get work done. I would recommend others do the same, especially if you have a service that is "covered" and you're not paying, as the impression I got was that they work on commission. Or at least that is why I'm assuming I got poor customer service. read more

I've been working with this crew to buy a car 3.5 hours from my house. I found a sales person, Matt Couch to be rude, jumps to inaccurate conclusions and treats potential customers poorly. Poorly to the point that if I would go to their dealership, I couldn't be nice. As a mechanical engineer designing engines professionally for 33 years and building race cars on the side, I don't appreciate being talked down to by a sales person, Matt Couch, at a car dealership about a $20,000 car. HORRIBLE COMPANY, TRIES TO BAIT AND SWITCH. I would go lower, but it is not possible. I set up an appointment, on Sunday (03/10), to see a car on Monday (03/11) after noon. I was called at 7:45 am to confirm the appointment and was sent a text shortly afterwards. My wife and I drove 45 minutes ONE WAY to see the car, and it wasn't there. I had to push to get some information about it. The person I talked with about it (not the one I had an appointment with, since they were unavailable) informed me that the car sold on Sunday. I simply stated that I thought they were closed on Sunday. I did not take my frustration out on the young woman they sent to talk with me. I did send a strongly worded text stating my disappointment that they tried to bait and switch me. I only used one cuss word (which was remarkable). I asked "SO WHY THE TRUCK DIDN'T YOU TELL ME". On Tuesday (03/12) he called 4 different times leaving messages. I refused to engage. Finally around 10:00pm he sent a text, to which I replied (in a condensed nutshell). Not buying the story, you had 8 hours to let me know, instead you wasted my time, and my money (gas), since it was a 90 miles round trip. Actions speak louder than words and having an appointment set up to see a car that was already sold, speaks volumes. I'm done, do not want your calls, and nothing will change my mind. You think that would of settled it right then and there? Nope, the GM tried calling me today (03/13). Left a long voice mail, and I read just enough of the transcript to see who it was. Essentially sent the same response, and added that it is now borderline harassment and to stop contacting me. read more

Called to inquire and the car cannot be located. Further, salesman could have suggested he would check on and call back ... or see what else was available. They tried to charge me $459 (was quoted $169) for a key and possibly have to have a new ignition because they said they couldn't cut the key to fit, because of the wear to the ignition. Went to local locksmith; they sprayed the ignition with WD40, the key fit fine. Locksmith charged me $135 for two keys. Furious that they tried to take advantage of me. Will never go back. read more

I'm not typically one put a business on blast, but I have NEVER been so disgusted with a car dealership as I am now. I've been a customer of Brad Barker Honda for a really long time. Well, as we all know, he sold out to the O'Brien group. My CRV is 16 months old and has about 15k miles on it. I recently had some issues with my tire pressure light coming on, so naturally I go the dealership to find out if I had a nail or something in it. It was due for an oil change anyway, so the next day, I dropped it off to get serviced. I get a call 3 hours later telling me that there's no way to fix the tire because there were several spots that were causing the tire to lose air. Next, I'm told that I need 4 new tires. Keep in mind that my Honda is a 2021...I've only had it for 16 months. Needless to say, it didn't go over well with me. Having owned Honda's for the last 16 years and have never heard something so ridiculous. After talking to the GM, he tells me that he will use his gauge to see if they need replaced..sure enough he said they did. I was already quoted almost $800 for 4 new tires, alignment and whatever else they do. No way in hell was I ok with any of this. Mr GM then tells me that he will do some sort of calculation with the mileage and the wear on the tires. He comes back with around $400ish. Clearly I have no choice at this point, so they put 4 new tires on and did the oil change and sent me on my way. The very next day, my tire light comes on again. I was hot at this point. I pull back into O'Brien Honda and the guy checks the air pressure and I guess the right front had way more air in it than the others. So...your guys just put BRAND NEW TIRES ON and don't know how much air goes in them...wtf!! Fast forward to 2 weeks later to today. I'm out working my second job and while driving...I hear this terrible noise coming from under my car. I pull over to see what was going on, and there was a large piece of metal that is supposed to be securely attached to the underneath of my car, hanging down. To say I was pissed is an under statement. I call one of my friends that used to worked for Brad Barker to ask what it could be. I send him a picture of it and he said that when they changed the oil, they forgot to put the clips on said metal pieces and it was now dragging under my car. I had to drive to Downs to deliver the order and back going only 14 mph. I was scared that it was going to fall of. So I lost out on making money because I needed to park my car. Tomorrow is not going to be a good day!! I will NEVER buy another vehicle from O'Brien!! They have destroyed what used to be a great dealership. I have never been more impressed by a car buying experience than at O'Brien's Honda! Cannot recommend them enough. In my long lifetime we (hubby and I)I have purchased many different cars: a Lexus, a Toyota, a Chevy, Oldsmobile, Cadillac, Lincoln MKZ. So it's saying a lot that O'Brien Honda impressed me from the moment I walked in. The person at reception desk greeted us immediately pointing out the lounge, offering a bottle of water or coke, and the free popcorn! More importantly they called a "sales consultant and educator" (my phrase) to help us. Terrance Harrell. with his calm demeanor and expert answers to our questions, was our guy! He built a sense of trust with us that has never changed. I KNEW he was giving me TRUTHFUL answers, even if they were NOT always the answers I wanted. Terrance spent a lot of time making sure that I was getting they type of car I wanted and needed. Honda cars are high-quality anyway, so I appreciated even more that he was not hyping but educating. Even AFTER we committed to buy our car (which I love!), he continued to educate (not sell). So when I drove the car off the lot, I was happier and even more committed to this purchase, because I knew how to drive it and HOW TO take advantages of the neat features the Honda 2019 Accord offers!! (PS. my two fav are: 1. the heads-up display that even tells me the street I am on!! (look under the compass display). 2) how the car slowly applies the brakes automatically on the highway, to warn me if I get too close to the car in front of me (and I SET THE DISTANCE!). (ps. I had just totaled my car because I braked to late for the other car). I was also impressed by Karen Kastronova, the business manager who handled the final paperwork. She is friendly, ethical and caring. Ryan O'Brien happened to be in the office during my last visit and Karen introduced him to me. Have you seen his commercials? They are attention-getting commercials! By contrast, Ryan is a modest man. Yes, he is high energy, but rather than taking credit for all his successes, he credits others for his success. I contacted the dealership this week inquiring about a 2014 Honda Oddyssey. I had visited several dealerships in the area and I was trying to shop for the best deal. I contacted this dealership via e-mail and when I was contacted by a salesperson, he immediately told me that he would not make any kind of deal on a 2014, until they had sold the remaining stock of 2013 Oddyssey's. Needless to say I was shocked, I had never had a salesperson talk to me in such a tone and basically tell me that they did not need my business. Ted and Patrick in particular are amazing to deal with and never, ever try to upsell or B.S. you about anything. I wish all garages were run as honestly as these guys run this one! Sales: the few times I have gone to look at cars at Honda I have found the typical sales schmooze. I wish car salespeople would learn to stop talking when a person is trying to test drive a vehicle. I'm sure they are very nice people, but I am not looking for a new best friend; I'm trying to listen to the engine, get a feel for the steering and braking and otherwise get an impression about the car. I do not want the back story on their entire family while I'm test driving on GE Road. Took my 2016 crv that would not start and I had it jumped. The service guy replaced my battery and said it had a bad battery cell. 2016 crv next day it would not start so something clearly is running down the battery. Googled this problem and it is the parking brake that Honda does not have a computer fix for. I told the service manager this and showed him the statement made on the internet and he could have cared less. Got my crv fixed in Chicago as they knew about this problem and actually listened to me. Check out other reviews and I agree head to Chicago where the Honda dealers want to deal and sell a lot more cars then in Bloomington Normal which means a much better deal read more

My back is injured and I have trouble doing things. My daughter wanted to do something helpful, so she purchased a voucher for a free oil change at Brad Barker Honda. She has problems getting a straight quote, and was told different things by different service persons regarding the cost and the scope of a voucher for an oil change. She ended up buying from a manager. I called to schedule an appointment for synthetic oil change. The person I spoke with told me that the voucher covered a $50.00 change involving partial synthetic oil. A full synthetic change was $70.00 and I would have to pay the difference ($20.00). I also needed a screw removed from a tire and a tire plug. As I waited, a person found me in the waiting room to advise that a diagnostic on my battery showed a low charge, and recommended a replacement. The replacement -Honda (???)- battery would cost $170.00 and come with a 3 year limited warranty. I declined. My battery is fine and takes a full charge with no indication of weakness. Finally I was presented with a bill for $61.49. No details on what the charges meant (oil change vs tire repair). When I requested an explanation, I was told that a synthetic oil change costs over $100.00 because of oil and extra labor charges .... I had to argue and request the bill quoted when I made the appointment. After some delay and a bit of attitude I was given a bill of $40.00, $20.00 for the tire repair. Come on. Why do you have to cheat everyone? Honda makes a good product. Crooked Dealers and service ruin the product for me. Customer # 75064 read more

Had a recalled passenger side Takata air bag replaced on my 2010 Honda Accord. I wish I taken it to another dealer to be replaced. When I got my car back there is grease, dirt and other marks where they took out and replaced the air bag. The dash where the air bag resides has a separation in the middle and my glove box is no longer aligned. I have emailed Julie with attached pictures to show the poor quality of the work performed. It will be interesting to hear her response. For the service department to release a vehicle back to the customer with OBVIOUS poor quality is a reflection on management and the culture of the service department. Imagine the "quality" of the work performed in other parts of the engine etc that cannot be easily seen by the customer. read more

I'm happy to say today was my last visit at this Honda dealership. The service department could not be more rude and difficult to work with! I went in for an oil change and when they told me my car was done they mentioned that I needed my tires rotated which is fine but they required I set another appointment to rotate the tires. This visit for an oil change I mentioned that my check engine light came on and I wanted them to check it out. Their response was to set another appointment to get the work done. I would rather drive to another city than ever step foot in this place again. As I was leaving today I asked them to put an oil change sticker on my windshield. You would have thought I asked for a free set of tires based on the look I got from the service dept! You can tell they are the only game in town for Honda service! I would recommend driving to Peoria or anywhere but the bloomington Honda! read more

Took my car in for warranty work. Got the car back with grease on the upholstery. Steering wheel cover, which covers the airbag that was being replaced under warranty, was not put back on straight. The bottom cover of the steering column was left off. When I took it back in to have it fixed the steering column cover was still not put on properly. At least they cleaned my upholstery on the revisit. read more

Contacted yesterday that they had a EX-L available. Call up the salesperson (Jeff) and made a reasonable offer as I had done with many other Honda dealers in Chicagoland area. Previously, all other dealers came back with no deal (and no counter). Within 20 minutes Jeff called back with a reasonable counteroffer. Left deposit and make the 130 mile drive. Dealership was small, but experience was great and very straight forward. Did not get any push from them to buy any "extras" and the process was smooth. Had I not had a trade-in could have been in and out in 15 minutes. Finance person was great to and didn't try to upsale the warranty as I found many other dealers try. Trade-in quote came in under quote from Carmax (which I felt was low), but dealership was willing to meet me halfway which meant a lot to me. Great experience, friendly folks, would not hesitate to recommend the dealership and especially the salesperson (Jeff). Could probably made a better deal for another $500 less or maybe I could have gotten another $500 on the trade-in, but the great service and feeling I left with was worth whatever I could have saved (or made) if I had waited for another dealership. read more

Good sales consultant (Terrance Halwell) .. Horrible General Manager (Mike Woolsey) I came to USA a little more than two months back. I was planning to buy a used car (Honda Accord) in the range of $10,000-$14,000. The sales person Terrance was a really nice guy with a lot of patience and genuine advice.I decided on a V4 pearl blue Honda Accord EX(2011 43,294 miles )which was costing me $15,900 (including the taxes). I had to stretch my budget because I liked the car pretty much. So I blocked the car after paying a refundable deposit of $500. It took me about 3 days for knowing the process of applying loan from DCU and in that time, I found another couple of deals in Chicago which were costing me less. I again went to the Brad Barker's dealership to see if they could match up the prices. This time I wanted to discuss with the Terrance's manager itself to avoid the delay in negotiations. This time I also saw another V4 Silver Accord EX (2009 82,180 miles) which had a price tag of $13,995. I was willing to pay $10,400 for it and was trying to negotiate. Here was the RUDEST of people I met !! Maybe he was having a bad mood or I wasn't sure but he wasn't ready to negotiate. I expected a polite NO if he was not ready to sell it at that price. But he started blaming me specifying that I had put the blue Accord of the sales for more than 7 days since I blocked it. I told him I came across a few better deals and was looking if there was a possibility of price matching. He said I sounded ridiculous and shouted at me in front of everyone saying I was being over ambitious and that I cannot buy any vehicle in Brad Barker with my attitude. I told him I was just looking at the possibility of price matching and that I didn't do anything wrong in searching for deals even though I paid the $500 as refundable deposit. He said STRAIGHT on my face "I DO NOT WANT TO DEAL WITH YOU AND YOU MAY LEAVE RIGHT AWAY". I didn't know what to say and took back my $500 and just left .. disgusted with the manager's attitude and the way he spoke to me. He could have just said it's not possible and I would have left. But it was NOT a pleasant experience with the manager shouting like that and saying that I'm "ridiculous". I am NOT pleased with the experience and would definitely not buy any car even if offerred lesser than the price I was asking. Thank you very much Brad Barker !! You keep your cars and I will keep my self-respect.
