O'Gallerie is one of the last few solid family businesses out there. They are very clear and upfront about their policies - no surprises. I have been buying and selling with them for 20 years, as had my grandmother since they opened in the 1970s' until she passed in 2006. Temper your expectations, folks. I just purchased a box of crystal glasses from their Day Auction. With premium fees, I paid $100. Now minimally, an auction house that wants any reputation at all would not accept cracked, chipped and dirty items. You would think that those would be reserved for a garage sale. I noticed immediately that one glass was chipped and left it there for them to throw away. Once I got home and sorted and cleaned...ugh...the glasses, I tossed another 5 glasses with chips and cracks and saw that others had scouring pad lines and flea bites and were in less than fair condition. I wouldn't use these glasses for a family function. Do better O'Gallerie. If you can't represent the items condition to online bidders, then you shouldn't be holding online bidding. read more

I called first. Talked to Tom the owner, told him what I had. told him I was nursing a broken leg and that I had to drive over from the coast for our appointment. He said he was looking forward to appraising what I had. I got up early and drove over. got there early just to let him know i was in town and see if he wanted to get started early. I told him i would come back at appointed time. I walked him out to the car and after he saw what I had and how much. The all the sudden he didn't want to take the time to appraise , I was told, OH THAT WILL TAKE HOURS!!! 2 HOURS TO DRIVE IN... AND WITH IN 5 MIN. my time was up. Be aware if you choose to have O'Gallerie auction your items that not only will they charge an exorbitant percentage of the final value fee for your items but they will also hang on to the money that they owe you for five weeks after the auction is completed. Well, I was shocked that this wonderful auction house did not have any Yelp reviews! Have to remedy that with this: In my work and personal life I frequent auction houses, country sales, estate sales, thrift stores and anywhere you can find interesting old stuff. Some of it I keep, a vast majority of it I sell. BUYERS: To me it's a testament to the quality of the items they take in for auction that everything I have bought I still have! We have a 1960s Honda Dream motorcycle (mega cool vintage bike), a great Smith & Wesson handgun, over 1 carat diamond earrings (what a buy), some vintage American pottery, and a fantastic Italian marble bust all of which we purchased over the last year from O'Gallerie. Their auctions are widely varied and sometimes are by theme or a particular persons estate or type,( i.e. dolls or art) but most often are a catchall with a lot of different kinds of valuable and interesting items. SELLERS: I should also mention that I have sold items through their auctions before and I have been more than pleased with my return. If you are interested in having them auction things for you you need to call & talk with them and see if they are interested . If so, you make an appointment and bring the item(s) down to their location for them to look at in person so they may determine an estimated auction value. And you leave the items with them until sold. They will give you an idea of when the item will be up for auction and when to expect a check. Please keep in mind that this is NOT a weekly auction house, so be prepared that it may take some time to get your items on the auction block and a good bit more time for them to reconcile and generate your check - minus the commission paid to the house. GENERAL: Auctions occur both in the daytime and the evenings. The day auctions are much more casual and (sometimes) have lower prices than the evening auctions, but in either case they move hella fast at both. HELPFUL INFO: In order to bid you need to provide I.D. and a credit card/debit card and you will be issued a bidder number. For day auctions, midway they have pizza for the crowd which is extra cool when the auctions sometimes go on for 5 hours, perhaps more. Today was a day auction and the place was reasonably full of serious buyers with pockets full of money. There were over 700 lots which means they are doing over a 100 an hour - like I said, things move fast around here! The auctioneers & staff are professional and fall on the no frills side of the game due to the sheer quantity of their catalogs (the list of what is being auctioned). If you aren't too sure what you are doing, you should try & go with someone who is familiar with auction protocols. Or just go a few times alone to watch and you'll soon get the hang of it. Day auctions are not open to online bidders, though the night auctions always are. Like all good auction houses, you can preview the items in person prior to the auction - check when the preview(s) are and get there so you can inspect the item prior to the frenzy of bidding. If you live in Portland you are lucky to have this awesome resource available to you. I have found some amazing items over the years. Many at a very good value. There are a broad range of things, of different quality, and a range of conditions- I think an in-person review is always best. The online bidding is an awesome convenience feature, I can do it from my couch instead of heading down Couch. Always remember that there is a commission on top of the sale price, and don't overbid. Wait until you really want something. I find that I do every 4-6 months, but I don't really need anything so that is pretty often for me. Over the years I have missed some auctions and then discovered things I really regret not getting. I now have a rule not to look a expired auctions. There is not reason to make myself sad. Be patient. They get interesting things. Taxidermy collections, Rugs, Native American art and artifacts, Asian art and furnishings, Northwest art, western art, a lot of ugly furniture that usually goes for cheap, some really nice furniture, bad art, good art, a lot of jewelry, some coins, guns, and anything else you can think of- I'm pretty sure I've even seen a car. The people working have always been nice to me. It is an auction house. They are honest, and seem decent, not sure what else to want from them. I've never sold anything but I imagine they are straightforward in that area too. I'm not sure why there are so few ratings for this business. I do NOT recommend anyone buying anything there. They are dealing dishonestly (if, technically, within the law). I bought an item at auction that had a "critical" defect (i.e. the item we bought was defective enough to be rendered completely unusable). It wasn't just cosmetic or even a major defect (but still usable) - the item I bought was listed and implied as a functioning item when - in fact - it just wasn't. I only knew this when I received the item AFTER PAYING SHIPPING MYSELF. I disputed the purchase and shipping with O'Gallerie to no avail. They kept on saying that all items sold "as is" (as if this is a magical excuse for anything). I turned to my credit card and disputed the charges there. I eventually got my money back. However, I just got a collections note from Capital Credit via O'Gallerie for the charges. (Where is the customer protection if the merchant can still charge the customer?? That aside...) I plan on continuing to contest these charges. I would not recommend buying anything from O'Gallerie. read more

Purchased a "curio" revolver from these people. Contacted the owner regarding shipping. He indicated that they held an FFL, so I advised him to send the firearm via USPS Priority Flat Rate 2-3 day ($16.85 Medium Box with insurance). Hell, the post office even provides FREE boxes. I then got a bill for more than $42for UPS GROUND (6 days!). I contacted the owner again. Not ONLY did he apologize profusely and accept complete responsibility for the error, he also, without prompting, comped the ENTIRE cost of shipping that they had billed to demonstrate his sincerity! My reply to all the whiners who thought they had a pot of gold and consigned it for auction and didn't get what they expected: Your property is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it, if you don't want to take that risk you can pay extra for a reserve to be set, or take what you get. Not happy with what you bought? It's clearly stated that all items are sold as is, as found, and caveat emptor is the way to go. (This cuts both ways, if you find a stash of valuables in the dresser you bought, they're yours to keep.) read more

BUYERS AND SELLERS BEWARE! It is an absolute joke how incompetent this business is. I submitted an absentee bid for a lot in a recent auction which was received and confirmed by O'Gallerie. I check the results the next day and see the lot ended for 40% less than my max bid. Thinking I've won the lot I email asking for my invoice... A few days go by with no response and I call. I am then told that "Yeah we goofed" and no one even bothered to record my bid. No apology, no explanation. So not only did they screw me over by completely disregarding my CONFIRMED BID, but they also screwed over their seller who would have made more money had they just done their job. I place absentee bids on about 20-30 auction items per year from houses ranging from Sotheby's to tiny auctioneers that do 1 sale a year out of a local VFW. NEVER have I had this happen and there is absolutely no excuse. This place is an embarrassment. read more

My husband and I have been both sellers and buyers with O'Gallerie for over 25 years and have been nothing but extremely pleased with our experiences on both ends. We typically purchase and sell original art and fine jewelry. We have worked with Dale, Tom, Peter and Katie. They have each been very personable and demonstrated fairness and honesty. I read a couple of negative comments. That's unfortunate and, quite likely, unwarranted. One posting sounds as though the author doesn't understand how auctions work. Auctions are, by nature, a gamble. The prices listed in catalogs for each item up for auction are a best-estimate range of possible selling prices. Any possession you decide to sell via the auction is NOT worth what you want or hope to get for it; it is worth ONLY the amount the buyer is willing to pay. The top bidder determines its worth--not the seller and not O'Gallerie. Who happens to be at any particular auction is also a factor. Maybe you luck out and someone who adores Rookwood pottery is in the audience and is bidding against a phone bidder and an on-line bidder who are both huge collectors. You'll probably sell your Rookwood vase for lot more than O'Gallerie's estimated price range. Likewise, your dining room furniture may fall flat and go to the first and only bidder for a much lower price than the estimated range because (just by random chance) the other bidders simply weren't in the market for dining room furniture. Sometimes you win; sometimes you lose. I highly recommend experiencing O'Gallerie's auctions. A huge part of the fun at any auction is not knowing what things will sell for. If you don't want to take a chance selling something for anything less than YOU believe it's worth--no problem--either pay to have a reserve price on it or just don't put it on the auction block. O'Gallerie is a Portland and Northwest treasure. The business provides our community a valuable service and an enjoyable experiences. Wow, a 16% fee for a buyer according to the previous reviewer. They are really taking it to the sellers too. I no longer have any trust in this organization. I used them 4-5 times over the past few years and usually had good results. I usually dealt with Tom O' Grady. He provided me with an estimated auction value and a schedule of commission rates before I consigned so there are no surprises. About a year ago I consigned a Rosewood Dining Table and 6 matching solid rosewood chairs; all in showroom condition. He gave me an estimate but ended up selling the entire set for $687 less a $200 commission for a net of $487- way below his estimate!! I realize that used furniture goes for a steep discount but this was a $2500 table and the chairs were $2600 with all pieces in showroom condition. I even included a custom made wood shipping crate that cost me $350-$375 to have built. I was aghast when I heard about the auction results. IF TOM HAD NO BIDS THAT NIGHT, HE SHOULD NEVER HAVE GIVEN AWAY MY TABLE AND CHAIRS!!! I will never forgive them or forget this dreadful experience. If you absolutely feel you want to deal with O'Gallerie, insist on a reserve at a minimum. They immediately from first to worst in my book. MY ADVICE IS TO STAY AWAY FROM THESE GUYS. read more

As a company, O'Gallerie would seem to occupy a favorable business niche. In principle, it should be a valuable platform for matching both buyers and sellers of estate property, art, jewelry, furniture, firearms, antiques and unusual items of all types and kinds. After all, most major metropolitan areas feature one or more premier auction houses of just this sort. That said, I cannot recommend O'Gallerie. I reach this conclusion based on multiple personal observations, which I will detail below. Not wishing to be seen as promoting any alternative auction house or platform in particular, the reader should be aware that there are superior venues available in Seattle, the SF Bay Area, and even locally here in Portland. Over the course of about 18-months, I consigned several various estate items with O'Gallerie. Primarily, I met with the owner, Tom O'Grady. Tom is a rather unpleasant man, but I'll comment more on that below. During those months and multiple transactions, O'Gallerie managed to lose one entire consigned lot of property (Day Auction item . . . no explanation was ever given, nor any apology offered, or any compensation proffered); significantly damage an antique I left with them; and once they even mailed me an account statement belonging to another customer! All of this speaks to sloppy or slipshod business practices and management. Other reviewers have written about their similar experiences. That said, I've met and interacted with several other O'Gallerie employees (aside from Tom O.), and most of them seem like decent, pleasant, and knowledgeable people. That is the only reason I'm giving this review 2-stars instead of 1-star. Tom, himself, by personality and demeanor, is terribly unsuited to a sales and marketing role. In short, he really should not be involved in customer service in any way. He was always cold and impolite with me; but I can accept that. What really made me cringe was an incident where I personally observed him bringing an elderly woman to tears on the sidewalk outside his main storefront. From what I could gather (and what I overheard) she was recently widowed, and was bringing a few items of furniture down to the O'Gallerie for Tom to inspect. Without further unsavory details, one phrase that I clearly heard Tom literally shout aloud was "Why are you wasting my time? . . . I'M TRYING TO RUN A BUSINESS HERE!" And while I cannot speak to the quality or nature of the furniture that was at issue there, this doesn't seem like any decent way to treat a fellow human being -- especially someone so obviously going through a period of personal grief. From what I understand, the O'Gallerie business itself was founded by Tom's father, who by most accounts was a fair and honest businessman by reputation. In contrast, Tom seems to be in charge of the O'Gallerie only because he inherited the role. In any case, he certainly doesn't deserve to be running a business like this based on personal merit, education, or his management capabilities. Thus, while I'm sorry that I cannot recommend this company under the current management, if Tom were no longer involved with it, my opinion could change. There are some good employees here; they just have a poor leader. Oh yes, and this place is quite dirty too, bordering on the filthy. For instance, the carpet in the lobby must date from the Reagan Administration years, and I doubt it has encountered more than a cursory floor cleaning since. read more

I agree with the previous dissatisfied customer. this Owner is a Liar and cheat, totally dishonest. they lost 10 boxes with fur coats Faberge eggs and other very expensive items from my wife's Grandparents home. They seem to be in cahoots with the company they use to pickup the items. At first one of the workers remembered getting the boxes but lost them. Then the owner said that they never got them. I don't wish evil upon anyone, but I know that they will get their just deserts. You are better off having your own Estate Sale. No matter what you earn, there will be a lot less anxiety. read more

I needed to sell some unusual items from my mother's estate, and the O'Gallerie staff were extremely helpful. I took everything to them, they logged it, and everything sold. I probably could have gotten more money through ebay or craigslist, but I'm not from Portland and I didn't have the time to deal with selling everything and clearing out the condo for sale at the same time. Online buyers beware!!! Photos are deceiving...The conditions are not well described at all. It's a no money back policy but that is even more reason to provide clear and untouched photos. I bought a coin that was dipped, shined and polished. Pretty much worth less than half of what I paid. To make matters worse, I didn't realize I won it and they charged my credit card over $350 in late fees, restocking charges and lost commission. The coin was only $650. If they could charge my credit card the $350, they could have just taken the payment on the coin. That's the idea of leaving my credit card...duh! They know and obviously do a nice business selling coins over and over again. Stay far, far away!!! read more

I have been buying from them for about 4-5 years. During that time I have gotten some excellent deals, some very good deals and, because I control how much I bid, have never been disappointed. There are some things that go so high, it makes me wonder. But then I am not a true collector of a lot of things. But I do know jewelry and there are lots of deals there. I have sold only once in conjunction with an estate. The staff is knowledgeable, helpful and make consigning easy. The terms are written out and clear as a bell to anyone who takes the time to read them. People can judge for themselves as to condition and can't whine if they failed to see something in the photos, which are usually very good. I have mostly bid online but that also is exciting. But we also usually go to the previews. Anyway you do it adds up to a lot of fun. read more

Over the years I have had multiple transactions with O'Gallerie. I only had one slip up where I was auto-registered online, then I accidentally registered in person and wound up buying under 2 different auction numbers. Regardless of my single error, they have been wonderful folks to work with: 5 stars all the way around -honorable and honest. They describe things accurately and fully, and I love the new online bidding. They do charge 20 percent buyers premium currently which seems high, but it is clearly posted and you know it when you are bidding so it doesn't come as a shock. read more

I heard about them through a friend so decided to take in a couple item to have appraised. I was thrilled that they offer free evaluations and there's no pressure at all to consign. My items were valued a lot higher than I expected which was really exciting. They did really well at the last auction as well. I was worried about having items up for auction during this pandemic but I'm so glad they proceeded with the auction. If you have items that you're looking to sell, don't hesitate. Great auction house full of fabulous items, and you'll probably find something that you can't live without! The curators are super knowledgeable, scholarly and friendly, which is a rare combination. The span of styles and eras they specialize in, throughout their auctions, is expansive and eclectic. Best auction house in the region, hands down. And if you ever have collectibles, antiques that you need to sell, you will NOT be disappointed in what happens with this team. Two seasons ago, I had to sell my brother-in-law's collection of strange memorabilia and out of fashion Victorian antiques. I chose O'Gallerie because I had worked with them years before. And even though they did not sell all of his collection in the first possible auction, they exercised knowledge and patience, and they ran everything through, eventually, according to plans which proved superior for maximum profits. A month ago, I received what I thought was my last check, their payment to me after taking their percentage. But today, I received yet another payment from them for some old books and a chair they recently sold! Believe me, I could have NEVER sold all of that weird stuff the way they did, with their timing. We used to go to O'Gallerie frequently, and often purchased some nice items at reasonable prices. We stopped going when they began taking phone bids and online bids. It seemed unfair, to be polite about it, that we were being outbid by unseen and unknown bidders. To those who complain because they bought something without actually seeing it (online or phone bidders), and feel you were cheated, I want to remind you that that is a risk you take at an auction, not just bidding online, but even if you inspect the actual item. Auctions in general are a lesson in caveat emptor. Always best to go to the previews. On a positve note, they provide some of the most interesting sales we've ever attended, and we've done auctions for over 50 years. read more

Use Craigslist instead. O'Gallerie does not disclose their fees online. You receive these buried in your service contract once you are already considering their services. I made multiple calls to understand them, both before the auction and after I received the payment. They would not take all of my antiques, so will have to use Craigslist anyway. There are so many fees and their impact to the payment is not made clear up front. They amounted to half of the sale price. By the way, they charge the buyer fees also! The hassle of doing business with them and the payment is not worth it. read more

First I notice, interesting the only response to other reviews was that of some other issue they could point a finger at and have no control over. (postal costs) No answer to reviews that were directly related to the company. This may have been a great place, but the second generation takeover has totally destroyed the integrity it may have been able to boast, once upon a time. We- I being a P.R. of an estate and a co-worker (that had dealt with the honest 1st generation) put about nine (9) art works, EACH valued around $200.00 in their possession to sell. They ended up putting them in a day auction. The whooping value we got.....$20.00 TOTAL. I met with Peter, the V.P. He seemed clueless and totally unable to comprehend the situation. I mentioned the low ratings they had, he actually thought they were decent reviews- that being 3, I corrected him it was less. In my mind, 3 is nothing to shine about. Upon talking with him the next day, he had every excuse in the book as to why he couldn't "share" much information, as my co-worker took the art works (in good faith) to be sold in an honest situation. I have been bidding and consigning with O'galerie for over 6 years, My brother furnished his whole house with O'gallerie antiques.They have wonderful items, a great staff, and very good deals on jewelry and furniture. i purchased two beautiful ruby rings from them and many decorative antique items, including my nicest brilliant cut glass vase. It is a lot of fun to go with friends to the live auction and bid from the gallery. It is tricky bidding on line so i would suggest going in person and looking at what you want to bid on. If you cant go to the auction you can can put an absentee bid for the item you want. I bid every month with O'gallerie and will continue to do so. read more

Just attended a rug auction this evening and they had quite a large crowd. I was surprised by the number of items sold to online or telephone bidders. While that does not mean they didn't stop in yesterday to view the items, it also might be true that they were buying based on description and photos. I have done that for auctions in London for books, but I never have felt comfortable without doing a personal inspection. I first attended an auction at O'Gallerie a good 20 years ago and everything just keeps staying as it was, which is fine. You have viewing the day before and a couple of hours before the sale as well. As with anything purchased in this fashion, you better know your stuff or in a moment of insanity you might end up with an over-priced curiosity piece you thought was really neat. I've attended auctions for more than 40 years and have never used the rules everyone says you should. As in the case of this auction, I've been around Persian rugs quite a bit and have developed a good eye for what collectors will like, what average homeowners will like, and what I like. If I find myself bidding against a collector I always assume I am going to pay more than I would like, but as the discomfort grows with the rising price I simply bow out when it no longer feels right. That happened once tonight and was at the point of doubling the expected price for the rug, but that rug warranted the higher price. Of the two I did buy, one was over the estimate, which was too low in the first place, and the second was below the estimate, which was a reasonable estimate and I was lucky it was near the end of the sale. Auctions are fun even if you do not buy anything or don't get a bidder's card for the sale. During the previews you get to see a whole variety things you might otherwise never come in contact with, and you get to develop an eye for quality (tonight I saw a painting on the wall that was, or will be, for sale, and I could swear it was an old paint-by-numbers, but was by a fairly well-known artist that someone with far loftier tastes than mine would pay many hundreds of dollars for). A fun place to visit, a good place to buy (if you know what you are doing), but as I observed this evening, probably not the best place to have kids running around or squirming in their chairs sitting through a long auction. There is a 16% buyers fee added to the winning bid amount. read more

I just received my statement for the furniture I consigned for auction. My share of the proceeds? ZERO. In fact, I still owe pickup fees. I'm so disappointed in this organization. I could have given the stuff away and got better results. It's really hurtful to think that items I carefully selected and cared for over the years would bring absolutely no return.
