Drove up from Tuscaloosa for sushi and throughly enjoyed it this evening. The toro, sea urchin and yellowtail were delicious and very fresh. And all the nigiri slices were sliced properly and perhaps slightly larger than normal. Which is certainly a plus for the customer. Also, we were very pleased with the friendly and helpful staff. After reading favorabe reviews on Yelp and Urbanspoon, I decided to give this a try. Unfortunately, I was mistaken. To say this place has good or excellent sushi, is like saying McDonald's has the best cheeseburger you've ever tasted. I ordered several dishes and only favored one, and even that one wasn't spectacular. Ika Maruyaki: Horribly overcooked, and the Squid was not cleaned. No orignally with way too much teriyaki sauce. Tried to let our server know that it was not very good and she became irritated and started yelling in the kitchen. Did not say I'm sorry or if she could offer something better for us. That was the last time we saw her. Rainbow Naruto: Fresh and clean, but too much cucumer. Decent dish Miso soup: Tasted like it was from a can Hot girl: No flavor, warm, disgusting Thai: Could have been a decent roll, but should have had the sauce, which you can buy at a grocery store, left off Roll Tide Roll: Spicy tuna was not freshly made, Tuna on top was frozen. Hamachi and Otoro Sashimi: Cut wrong and could tell they were frozen then thawed out. Tasted like water. All the Rolls were messy and unoriginal. The atmosphere was stericle and very unwelcoming. Service was terrible and once I expressed I didn't like a dish I was then ignored and did not see my server for the rest of the time. Someone else brought my food out too me. I also had to pay for what I did not eat! You can find much better sushi at a grocery store and if you want amazing sushi in Bham or Alabama, you should try Jinsei. Service was well below acceptable.  What seemed like a new employee could not remember drink orders and lost our order. My party waited for 45 minutes before being informed that 'the kitchen' lost our order. The manager continually pointed to our table to have us waited on but was never waited on, outside the initial drinks being served. We had asked for a refill, that never came while she assisted tables that just walked in. We witnessed her playing with the curtain and back area items before serving drinks to another table. When we were approached about the lost order, we said we were leaving and to pay for the drinks. It is appalling that after this experience we had to pay for drinks and was not asked to make it right. If employees are new, there should be someone watching over to ensure service does not fall below standards. Especially when you are the first ones that enter the restaurant and everyone after you is being serviced first. I do not recommend this location without proper staff who care for their patrons. read more

This place is FRESH. Sushi bars in Japan do not stink fish. This restaurant has same characteristics but with westernized menu system. With Auburn Tiger and Roll Tide rolls being my most favorite. Not only you can order one of the freshest fish in town. There is a bunch of varieties of cooked sushi plates to enjoy for those who can't take it raw. For instance you can share a Crunchy Shrimp roll with someone who doesn't eat raw fish. That way y'all are gonna be happy - you'll have your sashimi and she'll be able to enjoy the evening with you with a plate of cooked sushi. Tuesday nights are the half price sake and 8 bucks for any specialty rolls, which are the fancier ones. Too bad it's only for dine in. There are also lunch specials which are pretty reasonably (if not cheap) priced, it includes the miso soup, of course. The area itself , "The Preserve" has grown a lot, since i moved to Birmingham 3 years ago. The brand new Sprouts market (love it) and Starbucks make this place a growing Galleria. Yeah...no. The sushi I had at O Sushi was comparable to grocery store sushi. To begin, my husband and I both had miso soup which was obviously from a mix and super salty. I know it's a pretty salty soup to begin with, but this one tasted extra salty. We both ordered water and went through our first glass pretty quick because of the soup, but our waitress didn't come around very often so we were left with nothing to quench our thirst. My husband and I shared the california roll, rainbow roll, and the dragon roll. The california roll seemed slimy - I think it was the crab that was the slimy part. Not typical in my california roll experiences. The rainbow roll was okay but once again, the inside was an odd texture unlike other sushi. The dragon roll was probably the best sushi we got, but it still wasn't good enough to return to O Sushi. First time trying this place. Terrible food and customer service. Ordered fried rice, calamari, and Dynamite roll(fried). The rice was burnt, the calamari was too chewy to eat, and the sushi was soggy and just not good. Called to see what could be done and was told "that's the way it's supposed to be" and that I could "bring the food back to get a gift card". Refused to give me any or all of my money back under any circumstance. Won't be eating here ever again. read more

We ordered an appetizer that was priced around $9 but you only received enough for 3-4 bites. Visiting O Sushi for the first time, the service was excellent and the food not only visually appealing but very good. The sashimi was fresh & delicious, and the maki and steamed dumplings my daughter ordered were also very good. The decor was nice, with light wood, calm and quiet space, and other small touches that made dinner relaxing, such as a divider in the dining space and attractive ceiling lanterns. Everything here was spectacular! From the decor to the speed to the flavor to the waitress. It was very clean here! The food was amazing. I don't eat seafood in my sushi so the waitress was very accommodating with me. The bento box was huge for the price ! $12 for rice, chicken, sushi roll, fruit, veggies, soup, and salad! And then as we were checking out she brought a complementary fruit plate with 3 different fruits on it! It was such a great experience. I would have given this place a 5 star for the food, but the service by a young female was questionable. I notice that she gave excellent service to a certain group of customers (not white or black). I was with a party of 3 and I also noticed another table not of my ethic background receiving poor and extremely slow customer service. However, there was 2 other tables of a similar ethic hertiage. My glass was empty and I was sitting just waiting. However, the young lady went by our table maybe 10 plus times to service the other table with customers that looked closed to her hertiage. The other table I noticed received no service either, but the 2 table of likeness were given continuous service and their glasses where kept full. She keep going back saying "is there anything else". I couldn't even receive "can I refill you glasses". Who knows...maybe the other customers had money and the waitresses wanted a good tip. But for me, I love the food but the service is little to no service. Maybe its in my mind...who knows. But I know what I saw and experienced. read more

This was the most bizarre dining experience that I've ever had. I was given a list of local sushi restaurants in the area near my hotel that the front desk employee had suggested. Upon checking Yelp, I came across O Sushi which had the most stars and best reviews. I was excited to try this place out. The atmosphere was traditional of a small sushi restaurant and I was the first person in for dinner around 5:30pm on Wednesday. I started out with the Summer Roll. It had shrimp tempura and cream cheese on the inside, topped with crab, shrimp and avocado. The seafood tasted very fresh and the sauces on top were a perfect compliment and it was one of the top 3 best rolls that I have ever eaten. I couldn't wait for my next roll (Dynamite Roll) to come to the table. When it arrived, I noticed that the roll had been flash fried in what appeared to be a panko crust. The roll had a fishy odor but I was willing to give it a taste. First bite, gross. A blend of warm and cold gooey mush that I nearly spit out. I asked the waitress for some eel sauce in an attempt to rid the bad fish taste. The second bite was just as bad. I attempted one more time to coat the roll in eel sauce and after chewing it for 3-4 seconds I had to spit it out. The waitress asked if everything was okay and I told her that I didn't like the taste of the roll and that it had a strong odor to it. She asked if I would like another roll and I said that I would like another Summer Roll to go, assuming that she would take the Dynamite Roll off of the bill, but she didn't. The good news is that the second Summer Roll was as good as the first. I was going to give O Sushi the benefit of the doubt and give them 3 stars since I had one of the best and probably the worst roll that I've ever had. But then 3am rolled by. Went to the bathroom and felt awful. The next day at work, every 2 hours I had to pull over and find a bathroom. The following day, same thing. On top of that, I had to catch 2 planes to get back home and it wasn't pleasant. I was dripping in sweat most of the days and couldn't stop running to the restroom and medicine would not help. It's been 72 hours as of now and I just had my first meal that I could stomach and the sweats and nausea have finally gone away. I read that the owner uses the freshest fish and ingredients, but I saw the chef making my rolls checking labeling on a few bags before using the products. I sure hope that he wasn't misreading the expiration date because I'm pretty sure that was what went into my Dynamite Roll. Unfortunately, I won't be eating sushi for a long time now and I will not return to O Sushi. read more
