This a great gym. Prior to going into the gym I had been emailing with Julia about questions about classes and my Insurance and she was so responsive and helpful and I was very encouraged about joining this gym. Upon entering the gym I was greeted at the front by a nice helpful staff member that signed me up. It was effortless and smooth with my insurance plan. He then took me around and showed me all the various areas and walked me back to the studio where classes are held. I tried the Silver Sneaker class and don't let the name fool you. It was a fabulous workout and the instructor was great. The people waiting and in the class were so friendly and nice. I felt welcomed right away. I look forward to the next class.

First of all, this gym does NOT deserve a two star rating. If you look at the other reviews, they are mostly based on (negative reviews of) the condition of the gym and its equipment. While there were a few pieces of equipment that were not functioning when I visited (a few more than average, but not so many that I couldn't work around them), I am guessing that most of the negative reviewers here prioritize aesthetics over functionality. If you are one of those people who expect your gym to have the ambiance of a high-end country club, you won't be happy here. However, if you don't really care about a few dents and cracks in the walls, and can work around a few broken machines, this is actually a pretty good gym with a ton of equipment. Also, the a/c worked just fine. I really appreciated all of the powerlifting, olympic lifting, and crossfit equipment. They have squat racks, benches, tons of free weights, rowers, a rig for pullups and muscle-ups, plyo boxes, a GHD, and lots of other equipment you probably won't find in a "country club" style gym. They also have a ton of weight and cardio machines (most of the broken machines were cardio machines, including 5 out of 12 ellipticals that were not working). Basically, if you can't find a piece of equipment here that you need for your workout, it might not actually exist. The staff is friendly and a drop-in is only $15. The locker rooms/bathrooms aren't necessarily the cleanest in the world, but (again) this is a gym, not a five-star hotel. I have definitely showered and changed in worse. While I wouldn't say that this gym earns 5 stars, it's way better than the 1 and 2 star reviews that it's been getting, and is a great place to get in a workout near Chapel Hill, especially if you are into powerlifting, olympic lifting, or crossfit.

Everything is broken. Everything is dirty. Good luck finding cardio equipment since 90% of them are "out of order" on any given day. Management has nothing to say when asked about these concerns. "Actually, the treadmills aren't broken, it's an electrical issue. I can go reset the breaker if you want?" Your job is to run a gym, so maybe YES reset the breaker since 75% of your cardio machines aren't functioning? I have made multiple complaints. I pray for another gym to open in Carrboro. Carrboro is the worst O2 in the area. I will continue to complain until this gym steps up or it is bought out by a better fitness center.

I had a great experience, as a moderately serious runner who has not given enough attention to strength and stability training in the past. Long story short, the program really helped support my running and I don't think it was a coincidence that in the half-marathon that the program was helping me build toward, I ran a PR. Some might be skeptical of a program that is not in-person. However, I found it convenient to be able to complete the workouts at a time and place that worked for me, and also found that I still got a lot of benefits that I wouldn't have gotten just working out without the support of a trainer. Cody designs and structures all the workouts to gradually build in difficulty level, and records great videos himself to explain them. Most importantly he is super available to answer questions via the messaging function of the app - I had a few questions over the course of the program and he always provided illuminating, detailed answers and thoughtful suggestions. It's also possible to come into the studio to work on specific things or with questions, and Cody offered this option to me - in the end it turned out not to be necessary, but was good to have as an option. Additionally, the check-in function on the app, so that Cody can see your progress, provides accountability for those who, like me, don't have the discipline to stick to a training schedule completely on their own. Overall the program is perfect for those who, like me, want a program that is more flexible and affordable than in-person training, but provides more support and accountability than doing it all yourself.

I absolutely can't stand having children on these machines messing around when I just wanna get my workout done. And then after finishing my workout and finally being able to relax in the massage chairs, I realize I have to wait 10 full minutes because they only have two massage chairs and two Hydro massage chairs for the literal hundreds of people that come to this location. There's really no excuse. Please get more massage chairs, and Hydro massages for the people that are paying 20+ dollars a month. Every other location I've been to has at least four regular massage chairs. I don't understand why this location only has two especially for the level of foot traffic they get. You could relax and really focus on the workout. This new joint is a DUMP. Basically a micro-sized prison yard. PF didn't even bother to tell us it was moving, either - all the emails in the world, but nothing about this. CH has a ton of members in comparison to spots out in Western NC with far fewer people and far less traffic (Lenoir, Hickory, Newton, Wilkesboro, etc.). This place is just as small as those locations, but way more compressed and far less inviting. It feels "cheap," and while PF has always been affordable, it's never felt cheap, nor uninviting. The space doesn't make sense, either. Every machine ever built is stacked out front, crammed in on top of one another, with very little room for movement. It was chaotic, even though people were behaving and trying to do their thing. While I long ago copped out of "prime time" hours at PF, this place is so small that you'd think it was a clown car built for people who own multiple leggings. In the back there's not only an odd mezzanine with little in it (and stairs, for those of you with mobility issues), but also a huge "functional fitness" space that is wide open in comparison. Did PF not hire a planner and just "whooshed" over to a competitor's former spot? Parking isn't just more difficult than it used to be, but also uncomfortable. This location is in an obnoxiously busy area. The lot is poorly-designed, cramped, and **DARK.** Have your flashlight out... and you'll need one if you don't want to exercise with every high school student in Orange county next to you at 4 pm. (Nothing against them, btw, but it's been a thing at CHPF, and it's gonna be much more noticeable here.) Honestly, I delayed going because I suspected it would be awful. When I finally went in though? I actually felt depressed, like I was working out on a movie set designer's idea of a gym in a 1980's comedy. The vibes of the actual place -- not the staff or anybody else -- read "finish and leave, ASAP." I cannot overstate my disappointment.

There are free classes at my school, but I feel like you need a certain level of understanding of the poses before going to those classes. I'm the kind of person that would feel VERY uncomfortable mimicking the poses in class without learning the ABCs first, just for the sake of feeling sore afterwards. I'm also uncomfortable when the teachers talk way too much about their spiritual journey. I respect other people's spirituality, but when it's hovering over the ENTIRE CLASS, it can be very distracting. Paul Sobin solves both of my problem. In the class we would move from pose to pose, but he'd always mention the mistakes easily made. So when I'm doing the pose, even when he's not nearby to correct me, I could still keep in mind what to avoid. He offers a sweet mix of the physical and spiritual practice. For example when we start the slow breathing at the beginning of class, he'd mention how life is always busy and stressful, and it's good to take just a couple minutes to breathe slow and deep to give yourself a bit peace of mind. I really appreciate this. The series are pretty flexible - if you can't make it to the class you signed up for, you can do a make-up with any other series class Paul/ Sommer teach. Whatever leftover classes you haven't used in this series can be carried over to the next one. Students get a discount, which comes to $10 per class. This is quite an investment compared to the free gym, but I'd be happy to skip a weekend drink for this. People seem very nice, chill, and friendly as well. They also offer a week of classes free before the start of the series. The only con I can think of so far: The class can be crowded, to the point that the distance between you and the next mat is half a mat's width. Come 10 mins early to secure a good spot.
